Live Blogging Camping World Trucks From Talladega (SPEED - 3PM ET)

This is going to be a tough day for the Camping World Truck Series TV team. On one hand, they get to have fun with Halloween costumes during a pre-recorded one hour Setup show. On the other hand, they must deal with the passing of NASCAR legend Jim Hunter who was a friend of that network and those in the TV compound.

Krista Voda anchors The Setup with Ray Dunlap and Adam Alexander as the pit reporters. Once the race starts, Voda will remain and cover pit road as a third reporter. Rick Allen will call the action with Phil Parsons and Michael Waltrip.

Trucks are very different at Talladega from the Cup Series race. There are only a handful of trucks and drivers capable of running in the lead pack for the duration of the event. In the past, the trucks have run in small packs grouped according to speed.

The TV coverage on SPEED is focused on the lead pack at Talladega. Keep an eye on the scoring ticker to see just how many trucks exit the race early as it is Allen's practice to ignore passing this information along to viewers. As I was told, the focus of SPEED is the racing and the rest is not important.

Hopefully, Kyle Busch will not run away with this event and leave the pack battling for second place. The trucks are a much better show when there is a handful with the same speed at this track. Busch is always a threat to make it his own event.

SPEED's coverage is old school as we have said many times. The focus is on the racing, all the stories of pit road are updated and the announcing is exciting and high energy.

This post will serve to host your comments on the SPEED coverage of the Camping World Series trucks at Talladega. To add your TV-related comments, just click the comments button below. This is a family-friendly website, please keep that in mind when posting. Thanks for taking the time to stop by The Daly Planet.

Wrong post, this is for the trucks. The Dega qual post is the one before.

I think it's funny.

Jennifer Jo was doing a pretty good job with the powder puff. Maybe she can get a big time cosmetics sponsor.

some folks on twitter need to go to ebay & buy a sense of humor...geez. lighten up. I'm glad Speed has fun w/Halloween.

SPEED does a great job with Halloween. I'm glad they have the courage to do that. Something to look foward to every year. I love it.

Nice to get a little humor on what certainly started as a sad day.

Hope everyone enjoys the race! :)

Jennifer Jo looked fetching even in her paracute out fit!

Mikey as Mrs. what's her face is HILARIOUS!!! :)

My 8 year old thought it was funny.

I could do without it.

Now I am going to watch Michigan State vs Iowa Football

Love the costumes. But Mikey carrying a suitcase with a big Napa decal on it was too much. Come on, draw the line already. It's that kind of stuff that turns fans off to Nascar.

And Roland, those of you not familiar, Jim Hunter wore #22 when he was a Gamecock running back. Classy move by Todd Ellis on the radio today to reference his letters won and that he was a Gamecock football player. A few years ago, the Gamecocks even gave Hunter a then-era jersey with his number and name.

GinaV24 said...

Hi everyone, I'll be watching the truck race once it starts.

I had just read the sad news about Jim Hunter. I want to offer my condolences to his family. It's never easy.

Loving the aerial shots!

boyd said...

The wide and aerial shots are making this a great tv show.

RWar24 said...

I hope ESPN is taking notes. Great pictures and genuine excitement. Speed is putting on a clinic on how to televise Talladega.

uncredentialed said...

I know they want to make it look good on TV. But given the vast amount of seating available and the history of vehicles getting into the fence and parts into the stands, it seems ridiculous to let people sit in the lower rows today.

Anonymous said...

yes sir! Love the shots! Can actually see the racing and let it play out. <3

GinaV24 said...

go, Ron!

TexasRaceLady said...

I've died and gone to Heaven!
THIS is how to televise a race.
Just loving the high, wide shots.

Keep it up, SPEED.

And I LOVED the Gilligan's Island fun during pre-race. I do agree with RWar24 about Mikey's suitcase with NAPA on it. Just a downer.

GinaV24 said...

Boy the field sure has spread out. Like the rest of you, I love the aerial shots. Hope they do this tomorrow, it sure makes it easier to see the racing action

Charlie said...

The in-car cam was first seen on lap 2 and 4 and both times used for just a bit. Showed 12 laps before going to commercial.

Love the aerial shots.

I would guess that we will see in-car cam tomorrow with Espn on lap one, two, three, four, etc. Every lap. The aerial shot will be used less then what we have seen it used so far in this race.

Charlie said...

Race in big box. Pit road shot in little box. How nice is that.

boyd said...

To TRL
I bet Mikey thanks his sponsors when he uses the potty.
Great pictures and genuine excitement set Speed apart.

GinaV24 said...

Wow, the booth jinxed Jeffrey by talking about how well they were runnning.

Roland said...

little too zoomed out for me. Probably cause the field was so strung out. Hope we finally see some 3 wide in the next segment

boyd said...

I think Lofton mentioned his sponsors, but it was too mumbled to understand. Gotta slow down and speak clearer.

RWar24 said...

Nascar needs to do a better job with cautions. Way too many laps for just a 2 car wreck. I know there was a lot of fluid dropped, but it still seems like a long one to me.

Sally said...

Hi Planteers, just got home in time to see Jeffrey wreck. That's a shame. I thought the Gilligan's Island was cute, and I like the fact that they can have some fun. Very sorry to hear about Jim Hunter. Thoughts to his family

Gluck said they had to put the Speedy Dry down 6 times that's why it took forever

GinaV24 said...

RWar24 -- I thought that, too. Heck, I had time to go off and do put a load of laundry in.

Charlie said...

Someone new to racing would like watching this.

Daly Planet Editor said...

This is just a blast to watch.

boyd said...

Just can't wait until tomorrow so we can see one car at a time.
Not.
This is how ESPN used to cover racing, when I remember it being covered the right way.

GinaV24 said...

advertising raceday -- I'll pass.

The Loose Wheel said...

Still don't enjoy this racing as much with the tapered spacer but its been good now that the money is on the line.

What happened with the #51 and their sponsor? Did Graceway pull out?

GinaV24 said...

OK, these races always make me nervous, too.

Daly Planet Editor said...

I hope the ESPN boys are watching this!

GinaV24 said...

JD, I hope they are too, but since ESPN apparently thinks they are smarter than everyone -- even though the ratings are tanking, why would they think they have anything to learn?

6 to go!! Now it will get really nuts.

Sally said...

JD, it won't matter if they are. They have no idea why their coverage sucks. and this is better.

GinaV24 said...

Wow, look at Austin go!

GinaV24 said...

Damn, I knew they wouldn't be able to do this without getting wrecked! Geez, what a mess, hope no one was hurt.

Sally said...

I hate this about these races. Thanks goodness he's OK.

terri said...

The truck is flipping on the side of the screen, and they change the camera!!!! How rookie of a mistake!

And BTW, I HATE this racetrack, and that wreck is why.

OSBORNK said...

This is not racing. It's high stakes gambling with both skill and luck involved.

GinaV24 said...

boo hiss! Not what I wanted to see

Charlie said...

That was one of the best broadcasts at a race I have seen in a long time.

Very well done Speed. You should be proud.

Ann_Ominous said...

Kyle went below the yellow line. Yea, he got bumped, but Regan Smith had been bumped by Tony Stewart. Hey NASCAR how about some consistancy???!!!

OSBORNK said...

Whether you like him or not, he gets it done.

Anonymous said...

So glad Grampa is OK! That was a scary wreck! I swear I couldn't move until I knew he was OK!

terri said...

The booth says Kyle was "spinning" across the yellow line? What tape are they watching?

Just keep drinkin' the Nascar kool-aid, booth boys.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Thanks everyone for watching. This was some great TV coverage. Keep that in mind for tomorrow afternoon.

Have a great Saturday night.

Johnny TV is on trackside and no costumes

Daly Planet Editor said...

That was last year Roland. This is just a special added show.

Roland said...

I know they did it last year. I dont think John Roberts has ever hosted trackside I thought Steve did the show last year. Im just surprised there are no costumes, given this is a halloween edition.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Roland,

John Roberts and Krista Voda host the show, depending on Krista's schedule with the trucks.

Steve Byrnes has moved into the role of the "Race Hub" host earlier this year.

Look for a revamp of this program next season.

Ann_Ominous said...

Overall coverage was great. Lots of shots showing lots of cars. In the early part of the race when everybody kinda got in line and was behaving they talked about a wide variety of drivers. ESPN would of only talked about Kyle and maybe the owner's championship. Mikey was restrained most of the time.

Anonymous said...

I will admit, Mikey actually made me laugh a couple of times today. When he actually uses his experience and knowledge to analyze the action, he has proven he can be an asset. However, much of the time he chooses to be a sponsor shilling clown and he detracts from the telecast. It's sad that I actually hope for Mario Gosselin to drop out or run poorly so I don't have to listen to Mikey shill for one of his own personal sponsors.

Still not a fan of the costumes. The pre-race show was painful to watch this year. Yes, JJC added a couple of reasons to watch, and Voda looked great, but there didn't seem to be the same enthusiasm as years past and it was just uncomfortable to watch.

Good pictures, generally good commentary, and good direction. Overall a good telecast. Still think Mikey needs to shut his hole about his sponsors and talk about the sponsors for the teams on the track instead.

Anonymous said...

Who is the attractive lady playing 'Ginger' in the first two pictures?

Daly Planet Editor said...

That would be truck series driver Jennifer Jo Cobb.

NorCalFan said...

Slightly off-topic, but speaking of JJCobb, this morning I was standing outside the restrooms in the Cup garage (I'm at Talladega) and this woman (I later find out it was Jennifer) comes racing out the restroom door headed for pit road in those high heels and that short, low-cut dress. Heads were spinning at the sight of a woman sprinting across the garage area in tht outfit considering Nascar's strict dresscode in the garage. Then I was told by insiders that Ashley Judd refused to adhere to garage dress code when her hubby was in Sprint Cup. She would regularly show up wearing dresses and sandals in the garage.

I watched the race late on the DVR. Great job by Speed. Wonderful wide shots. Let's hope ESPN follows

Vicky D said...

I thought this show was great and I also thought Ray was a riot as Gilligan, and poor AA with his stuffing for the Skipper was so funny. Enjoyed the race telecast and got to see quite a bit of our fav guy.

Michael said...

Just watched on DVR this morning. Great race with typical Talledega scary moment. They play random scanner audio over the top of the announcers at critical times too often, and I love the in cars on a restrictor plate race. Could've used more than they did.
And I love fellow NYer Todd Bodine, but he got the Jimmy Johnson treatment today. No matter where he was in the field, they always mentioned him and neglected other drivers.
