Live Blogging Sprint Cup Series From Talladega (ESPN2/ESPN - 12:00PM)

Here we go with the official "big one" TV coverage. These were the buzzwords repeated endlessly by Dr. Jerry Punch when he was in the play-by-play role for three years at ESPN.

The pre-race show from Talladega will be on ESPN2. Allen Bestwick is hosting from the Infield Pit Studio with Rusty Wallace, Ray Evernham and Brad Daugherty. It should be interesting to see if they use this hour to acknowledge the controversial finish of the truck series race and discuss the danger the yellow line rule poses today with cars now running 200mph once again.

Marty Reid is going to call the race. This might be his biggest challenge yet as he makes his way through the ESPN Sprint Cup Series races for the first time. Reid is going to have to balance the action on the track with the pictures that ESPN chooses to show.

Time and time again since the Chase began, Reid has been caught working only off the monitors in the TV booth. Incidents and key passes on the track have often been acknowledged by Dale Jarrett and then caught after a delay by the ESPN TV truck.

Jarrett and Andy Petree are going to be front and center at a track where NASCAR looks very closely at what the TV personalities say on the air about the racing. Teams dropping to the back, accidents getting to pit road and last lap incidents have been hot buttons for the sanctioning body.

On pit road will be Punch, Jamie Little, Vince Welch and Dave Burns. This is the race where tempers overflow like no other. Short-track beating and banging pales in comparison to the high-speed danger of this superspeedway. It should be interesting to see the pit reporters interact with drivers out of the race and after the event is over. Tim Brewer will be in the Tech Garage.

SPEED televised the truck series race on Saturday and it was a pleasure to watch. Overhead shots and wide angles let viewers see the racing through the pack as it played-out. Pit road reporters updated the key teams and the pit stops in detail.

This race has potential to boost NASCAR TV ratings for the rest of the season. A compelling and exciting telecast will go a long way toward erasing some of the blunders from ESPN this season, including the poor coverage at Martinsville.

This post will serve to host your comments on the ESPN2/ESPN coverage of the Sprint Cup Series race from Talladega. To add your TV-related opinion, just click on the comments button below. This is a family-friendly website, please keep that in mind when posting. Thanks for stopping by.

Agree! EPIC FAIL..finally showing that bad wreck...NO CAMERAS hardly?

They IGNORE the BIG ONE everybody wanted.

Espn STINKS :(

You really shouldn't be excited to say IT'S THE BIG ONE as the 43 car is upside-down and slamming into the wall.

Reid waited all day just to say it with excitement in this cluster of a finish.

What happened with what Chad said I missed it, I'm watching ESPN I don't have a clue

Happy for Clint. I am still of the opinion that NASCAR has been trying to screw them for some reason. I will actually watch VL! Usually I don't.

No interview with AJ?

Man, even at the end the camera work STANK once again.

I would like to know what Happened to Tony & the others.

I can see ONCe again, glad I didn't sit thru the race on tv.

Anon 4:33 -- you are so right! He obviously was waiting to be able to say that line.

Awful ending. Hate the radio chatter. Just gives me a headache

What happened with what Chad said I missed it, I'm watching ESPN I don't have a clue.

He was being interviewed with less than 30 laps to go in a race that could decide the championship. During the interview he mentioned the loss of two Nascar individuals and how it was rough to race but said that's life.

And a few people jumped on it and are saying it made them sick.

Darcie said...

Mike, it was during the debris caution and they asked Chad about his feelings about the death of Jim Hunter and he said it was sad, but that's life and move on. Heartless jerk

All that YAPPING about (seeming happy) to see the big one occur and now they basically IGNORE it but for a brief replay?

Is everybody ok???Geesh.

How can NASCAR question the ratings with rubbish like this? booth stinks. Radio was good to listen to (LOVE MRN) but I have to find it online.

Thankyou anon @ 4:36

Is that really the best camera angle they have? ESPN really let down the fans if the air shot was the only camera shot they had of the teams moving down into Turn 1 to determine the winner. I guess either way ... I'm happy ... big fan of the 33 and the 29!

Dang when did Chad make that comment? Anybody know? I will rewind DVR...can't believe he'd be so cold?????????????

Sophia said...

All these JUNK CAMERAS & no better angle of that wreck. R U kidding me?

Who RUNS the cameras?

cub scouts???????

Tough listening to tv & radio interviews same time. :)

Mike (Detroit) said...

Thanks Darci, You know it's Chad, didn't really think about the family hurting out there.

He wasn't cold. A few people are overreacting. He said it was real tough but "that's life" which I take it to mean "move on".

What do people want him to say in the heat of the race?

OSBORNK said...

JJ finished 8th and said the day went really well. I guess it did but can you imagine hearing that from Dale Sr. or Kyle Busch?

Mike (Detroit) said...

anon @ 4:41 I expected him to say less or nothing at all. I agree it's the heat of the race and all.

Still no interview from AJ.

KoHoSo said...

Sophia, that's an insult to all of us that proudly served in the Cub Scouts. :-D

Sophia said...

How many were in the wreck? Do we know?

No replay?

The pre race & commercials for Dega are FULL OF CRASH VIDEO and it happens at end of race & we see nothing? Damage to cars? Drivers?

No interview with AJ?

Bipolar Coverage.

But in general I hate the hype for the "big one" all the time.

Mike (Detroit) said...

Do we even know if AJ is ok? I'm missing stuff big time now.

Johnson is happy to get out of Talladega without a wreck -- he wouldn't have been up as far as that without his teammate in the 24, but a lot like his crew chief -- its all about him.

I cannot believe that ESPN has only that ONE camera shot of the last wreck? Really? where were all the in car camera shots? What about follow up with the drivers/teams involved?

Roland said...

Come on guys your overeacting what Chad said was ok it wasnt disrespcetful. That is life and people do pass on and if he really didnt have a heart he wouldnt have brought it up anyway.

Terrible post race by espn. How bout lets see the wreck. Talk to AJ not JJ

KoHoso

You are so correct..I almost typed (with apologies to the real Cub Scouts!?)

;-D

Radio wrapping up and I still don't know who's in the wreck.

They are showing the wreck but MISSED HALF OF THE BEGINNING?!^%!^#%!^%#!

Remember when Sadler crashed so badly..it was "off camera as well".

ESPN needs to get lesssons from Mike Wells.

Final results have Johnson in 7th and Hamlin 8th. And why wouldn't Johnson say the day went really well? He was in 7th and didn't have a chance to go for the win or move up more once the wreck happened but he was in a position to contend.

I would think anyone in title contention would be happy to avoid a wreck at Talladega.

Sophia said...

WHAT? Scheduled until 5pm and going off the air EARLY?

THIS is why I haven't watched races this season NASCAR?

Radio off air...

:-(

I see I've missed NOTHING since TNT left.

Mike (Detroit) said...

AJ got his bell rung hard so I can understand not getting an interview with him, but have they said if he's ok yet?

OK gang, before you leave how about a comment on the new post up on the site.

Trying something new this week thanks to Pete Pistone. It's called the "TV Police."

Have fun and thanks for hanging with us for the race.
