SPEED And ESPN2 Split Friday TV

John Roberts is back in the TV booth this weekend for SPEED but Darrell Waltrip is not. Waltrip is getting ready for next Wednesday, when the network will cover the selection of the new nominees for the NASCAR Hall of Fame.

Roberts will be joined by Jeff Hammond and Larry McReynolds in the booth at the Auto Club Speedway. This crew starts with Nationwide Series practice at 2PM ET. They take a break for ESPN2 coverage, then resume with the second round of practice at 4:30PM.

Throughout the day Wendy Venturini, Bob Dillner, Randy Pemberton and Hermie Sadler will rotate on the different SPEED shows as reporters.

Marty Reid, Dale Jarrett and Andy Petree are doing double duty again this week, calling the Nationwide and Sprint Cup Series races. Friday they begin with Sprint Cup Series practice at 3PM ET. They return at 6:30PM with Sprint Cup Series qualifying.

ESPN has Dr. Jerry Punch, Dave Burns, Jamie Little and Vince Welch as reporters this weekend. Tim Brewer is also in the Tech Garage. Allen Bestwick will be working from the Infield Pit Studio with Rusty Wallace and Brad Daugherty.

The day ends with Trackside on SPEED going up against NASCAR Now on ESPN2 at 8:30PM. Krista Voda hosts on SPEED with guests Jeff Gordon and Ryan Newman. Nicole Briscoe is in the ESPN2 studios hosting with analyst Ricky Craven.

Espn needs to wake up! For whatever reason, be it tiredness, information overload, fighting with the production crew, etc., having Reid, Jarrett, and Petree do double duty does not work. They are just not up to par by the time Sunday’s cup race comes around. MC

Too bad ESPN can't show practices on Sat, what a waste

ESPN has a lot of work to do this weekend. Lackluster Fontana racing has a history of dragging down tv coverage.

Anon 6:54am: I agree with you about the booth. I have felt there is a spark missing in the booth and they just seem dull.

I think JR,Hammond and Larry are doing a good job with NW Practice today. Hammond is goofy though.

We are getting a Danica in-car shot. She is 25th on the speed chart and not happy with the handling on her car. Danica is finishing out the season in NW running all the races. Hammond calls 25th on the speed chart respectable. Whatever.

Larry Mac comparing apples to green beans. Now it's getting silly.

Any word on when the Tim Richmond episode of 30 for 30 airs? I've been waiting for it for over a year already.

Marty Reid was on shaky ground when he brought up the fact that Jaun Pablo should communicate in spanish so other teams wouldnt understand him. Very delicate thing to discuss. He needs to remember Bob Griese. Another instance of Marty not thinking before he talks. Found it inappropriate, not offending

I had to go to NASCAR.com to
see the positions past 20. The
idiot director will not show
the higher positions on the ticker.

@51 year fan--the positions higher than 20 are NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS! :p That's the answer to anything that you want to know that they won't tell you. They feel it's none of your business so they won't tell you and tell you only what they think you need to know.:(

The booth with Marty Reid, DJ and Petree is DULL.
Overall...
When ratings are down ESPN thinks it could be the start times. When ratings are down BF isn't worried about it. When we watch the coverage and get frustrated, we don't matter!

I want ESPN to keep up the great work! Keep doing what are doing guys! It's working! DUH
