Live Blogging Sprint Cup Series From Dover (FOX - 12:30PM ET)

It's overcast at Dover with a 50% chance of rain. After a hard crash shook-up teams and crews on Saturday, the Sprint Cup Series races on one of the fastest mile tracks on the circuit.

Clint Bowyer got turned on his side and almost rolled it into the inside wall on the final laps. A rear spring from his car struck one of his pit crew members. It gashed his leg, chipped a bone and put him in the hospital overnight. Dover is one of the most dangerous tracks on the circuit.

The NASCAR on FOX trio of Darrell Waltrip, Chris Myers and Jeff Hammond appeared live during SPEED's RaceDay show. They were inside the Hollywood Hotel, so it looks like there will be no outdoor pre-race set this week. Rain is the likely reason.

Two items. First, veteran NASCAR reporter Mike Mulhern passed along that he heard Waltrip was pushing FOX to bring Micheal Waltrip into the FOX booth and move Larry McReynolds out. Secondly, Jeff Hammond joined Twitter and it should be interesting to see how he interacts with fans during the live race.

The new SPEED and FOX executives have fully enabled Waltrip as the star of NASCAR TV. Love him or hate him, Waltrip has four more seasons at FOX and SPEED and the contract is signed. After his failure to describe Kyle Busch's actions last week vs. Kevin Harvick, it should be interesting to hear Waltrip's comments in the pre-race.

Mike Joy sat back last week and the long periods of silence were a commentary on just how awkward these FOX telecasts have become. Despite his best efforts to communicate what is going on in the race, Joy is constantly trampled in the booth by Waltrip. This happened again on the final lap last week.

It's been a long fall for Larry McReynolds. Removed from his Trackside program. NASCAR Performance became a show taped during the week. FOX ended his "Reach up and pull the belts tight" catchphrase. Now, the rumor that he may be out at FOX in the booth.

The corps of pit reporters are waiting in the wings to step-up and get more involved in the telecasts. Steve Byrnes, Krista Voda, Matt Yocum and Dick Berggren are experienced and incredibly underused. With all the potential for mayhem at Dover, this crew may finally get some quality air time.

Say it with me: Tight shots, single car views, in-car cameras, lack of field recaps and no aerial views. FOX made a decision of how to produce these races and they are sticking with it to the bitter end this season. So, here we go again.

This post will serve to host your comments on the NASCAR on FOX coverage of the Sprint Cup Series race from Dover. To add your TV-related opinion, just click on the comments button below. Overcast with rain pending at Dover. No hurry-up start due to TV.

Let's hope we get it in.

Roland said...

Not surprised to hear about Larry Mac possible being forced out. I think we can all see that coming. For who knows what reason FOX/SPEED have turned their back on ol' Larry Mac. More Waltrip wouldnt do anybody any good. You always hear DW say "dont beat yourself", thats good advice for FOX.

Anonymous said...

If Michael joins Darrell in the FOX booth, I'm done with FOX. Don't know why they are unhappy with Larry.

Daly Planet Editor said...

If you watched NASCAR Now and RaceDay, you are now in hour #3 of Harvick vs. Busch hype.

It's awful.

adamtw1010 said...

Too bad Larry Mac might be gone. Liked his role. Perhaps he'll get promoted at TNT.

Anonymous said...

Larry Mac is one of the few announcers I like in NASCAR.

Roland said...

Dare I say Larry Mac in the ESPN Tech Garage? haha

Gene said...

Larry Mac is still the tech guy on TNT this year, right?

Daly Planet Editor said...

I'll try for more info on Larry Mac, but the FOX guys are not real happy with me right now.

Told TV crew members anyone coming to my site and leaving a comment would be fired.

Stay classy, FOX Sports.

Roland said...

Kyle Busch says he's moved on, he's focused on today. Would be nice if FOX did the same.

Anonymous said...

I like Larry Mac! How could a network get ride of a Larry Mac before a Rusty Wallace?

Daly Planet Editor said...

It's FOX, Rusty and Brewer are on ESPN.

Anonymous said...

Junior looks bored during driver intros! Maybe he saw the Fox Pre Race show script!

Daly Planet Editor said...

That was just what Mike passed along from the track today. He seemed to feel strongly that DW was the one lobbying for the change.

Let's see how Larry sounds and looks today on TV. He wears his heart on his sleeve, so we should be able to tell.

Anonymous said...

I think Fox needs to change big time! Get Krista in the Hollywood Hotel!

Gene said...

Krista does a good job for the truck series pre race show.

Anonymous said...

two comments today show dw still in the kyle camp... said one wants to move on, one instigating... and now said on his rev'd up that this makes "happy"... happy. don't think he has yet said that kyle did it on purpose

Anonymous said...

I know Larry is FOX. Im just saying I never thought I would see the day that FOX got rid of LArry before ESPN got rid of Rusty or Brewer.

I do believe if this is the case it would be in ESPNs BEST INTEREST to grab Larry as fast as they can! They could always throw him on pit road or NASCAR Now. (He did pit reporting last season on SPEED)

Daly Planet Editor said...

The whispers were that Krista was going into the HH and Steve Byrnes was replacing Mike Joy, but neither one happened.

FOX has to do something, they can only beat their chests while ratings and reviews go downhill so long.

Ya know, change is not a bad thing, but it's usually a hard thing.

Anonymous said...

Next Feud in the making, ESPN vs FOX for Larry Mac!

Daly Planet Editor said...

Anon 12:54PM,

When DW refused to speak live about the replay of the crash last week I was on Twitter screaming "Speak up DW!"

I had the media messaging me and howling with laughter. He is just so deeply conflicted.

Anonymous said...

I think best idea for FOX is Jeff Hammond, Larry Mac, and Mike Joy in booth. Darrell down to hollywood hotel. Easiest change ever.

RWar24 said...

If Larry is out the door at Fox, it'll be a blessing in disguise. Perhaps he'll have a prominent role in a Comcast/Vs/NBC deal if they get involved. One Waltrip in the booth is bad, two will be horrendous. All you'll hear is Napa blah blah blah, Toyota blah blah blah..

Sally said...

Oy. I guess if they keep sliding up and down the xcale they will eventually find the right note/harmony?

Daly Planet Editor said...

Anon 1:00PM,

On SPEED they have been using the combo of Kyle Petty, Jeff Hammond and Steve Byrnes.

Belive it or not, those guys really click and have lots of energy. Something the FOX guys have been lacking since Daytona.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Sally, after yesterday I started muting it again for the anthems.

Dannyboy said...

What the #&@% was THAT?

Sally said...

I guess I'm a slow learner, JD. Muting the anthem, muting DW...I guess the telecast could have no sound and it wouldn't make a difference to me!

Daly Planet Editor said...

Hearing from folks at the track that the crowd is horrible.

Be interesting to see what FOX shows of the grandstands.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Dannyboy, time to call The Hoff!!

Sally said...

As I recall, John Schneider and Trace Adkins can sing the anthem well. It's a hard song to sing...get someone with the vocal range to do it, or use an instrumental version! Some of these border on 'unAmerican'!

Daly Planet Editor said...

Sally, it's NASCAR. Just get a military band or singer and it's a done deal.

They are next to Dover Air Force base for goodness sake!

Charlie said...

If I had a company that was losing money I would look for suggestions to help me get the company back on track.
Nascar and the Tv people have their own solutions and ignore the fans suggestions and their way is not working.
I guess we will all just watch as Nascar goes down the tube.

Dannyboy said...

Sally said it ALL - twice!

Anonymous said...

It's time to reach up and pull those audio cables loose.

RWar24 said...

Wow that crowd is bad. I'm sure weather played a part, it's definitely not the only factor. Anybody know what ticket prices are for Dover?

Anonymous said...

That was awkward

Anonymous said...

What happened to singing the Anthem at the pace and tune to which it was written? Some Americans like to sing along when they are at a sporting event.

Cathy said...

Turned the TV on in the middle of the "anthem" (thankfully near the end) - what the hell was that? The look on Mark Martin's face was perfect. And what were they wearing????

Charlie said...

Is Fox told by Nascar not to show the crowd.

Anonymous said...

DW lobbying for a nepotism would be a firing offense at a legitimate company.

Anonymous said...

And the replays begin

julian24 said...

does FOX know how to use split screen anymore????

Daly Planet Editor said...

Charlie, at any sparsely attended sporting event the TV guys try not to show the crowd a lot.

You can see that on lots of indoor baseball games in regular season.

Charlie said...

replay on lap 2 so we missed lap 3 and part of 4 to show the replay.

In-car cam first used on lap 6.

Sally said...

Do I see most of the back stretch seats covered by ads? That means their pre race sales weren't great, doesn't it?

Sally said...

I can't believe DW hasn't given us a lap by lap on Kyle yet.

Roadgeek Adam said...

There ya go. Took 11 laps.

Anonymous said...

These clowns have an agenda that will not let us see this race. We would be better served with four fixed cameras and the PA announcer on the web.

Daly Planet Editor said...

It's just rough to watch the director and producer play with us rather than just show us the race.

We watched SPEED and ESPN produce good telecasts from this same track on Friday and Saturday.

Roland said...

Wow 18 laps before the first commercial. I'm impressed

Roadgeek Adam said...

Marty seemed to be a bit more on game near the end of the race yesterday, which was rather surprising.

Also, why are they surprised about the intermittent sun? I already knew that was going to happen before the race started.

Anonymous said...

They know what good NASCAR TV is and we know they know. Everyone involved knows FOX knows better and we still get this. Horse's a.

Cathy said...

Question - I am missing something here. If qualifying was cancelled due to rain, why did Johnson get the pole? I thought it is set by points if cancelled....

Mike O said...

first yellow and we are in commercial

Dannyboy said...

Only by points if EVERYTHING cxld. By fastest practice speed if they practice.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Cathy, practice times now.

Anonymous said...

Toughluck for Logano, he's been invisible on FOX all season long until now.

MikeC said...

If they're able to do final practice and qualifying gets rained out, they line up by practice speeds to a certain point. New procedure this year.

I know I am in the vast minority here, but if FOX dispenses with Larry Mac, I am quite fine with it. I have never been a fan of his. Over the years I have really disliked the forced "excitement" he puts forth at the beginning and especially at the end of the races. I just have never liked he OR DW as FOX broadcasters...

Sophia said...

JD or others,

Where did the news about Larry Mac being forced out come from? An article online? I'm out of the loop, DVRing the race & listening to Reds on radio.

Even tho I don't watch the races anymore, esp on Fox (Might catch last 10 laps) I am sad Larry is being pushed out! Wow...he is not the reason ratings are bad.

Elephant in the room.

CAMERA WORK STINKS.

Fox said folks commenting here will be fire? Doesn't surprise me. They are screwing up baseball too with split screens & old video clips OVER the game.

Same old, same old. But yes, change is hard.

Will check back here later, Reds just gave up 2 HR back to back 1st inning. Ouch.

p.s. I thought the one girls outfit for the anthem was NOT appropriate unless it was 90 degrees outside. I saw the flyover and last few minutes of bad anthem. NASCAR should be ashamed of their music choices..but they've many issues ahead of that.

Thanks for the place to comment even though it's clear, Fox doesn't care what folks say. The more we complained, the more they gunk up, junk up and Ruin camera work for the home viewers

Peace :(

GinaV24 said...

If they put 2 waltrips in the booth for the Cup races, my mute button will be in use for ALL Fox broadcasts.

We were supposed to go to Dover, but opted not to waste the gas and parking money since Fox may be saying 50% but NOAA.gov says 70%.

so I'm here with all of you today - listening to trackpass and with the TV on mute.

RWar24 said...

I'm trying to figure out why all the Monster Bridge coverage from the networks. They act like they just built the thing. Newsflash: It's been there a while now.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Sophia, I was clear in saying both in my cover post and this thread that it was passed along from Mike Mulhern this AM from the track.

Cathy said...

@ Dannyboy & JD - thanks for the info. I don't pay as much attn as I used to for some unknown reason... (or reasons)

Charlie said...

Fox just shows the top 3 cars during this last restart. I guess the rest of the cars are there for fill in.

Tight shots do NOT show the race.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Kyng,

NASCAR TV has traditionally tried to have a driver and a crew chief as analysts in the booth.

That is what many folks feel TNT is missing with two former drivers.

If Larry Mac moved out and someone like Hammond moved in, so be it. But two former drivers like Darrell and Mikey would lost any crew chief perspective.

Anonymous said...

Larry is speaking more today than he has in previous weeks. So far so good after that restart.

red said...

to answer the question: dover tickets run from $55-85.
i consider this my home track and can tell you that the crowd is always thin if there's a rain threat -- which is almost always the case for the Spring race.

Anonymous said...

Happy Race Day Planeteers :)

Praying for good hard racing but not what happened yesterday! Just glad everyone is OK!

Agree Buschseries--I agree. Would be a shame if he's gone especially if he is replaced by people fans don't like or someone who doesn't do a good job.

If I'm at the track I'd do RaceDay but it's not a must see anymore.

Sally--I've decided that unless it's the MRO kids, Horny Frogs, *certain* Country Singers or Military Bands I'm muting the anthem! Can't take it anymore!

Sally said...

No mention of Regan Smith running in top 10.

Dannyboy said...

If I remember correctly, Dover has failed to sell out even when just about everywhere else WAS selling out.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Did FOX tell us there was a competition caution before it flew? Did I miss it?

Roland said...

shouldn't have complimented them. They spent the whole green flag run in commercial then come back for 2 laps before the caution. clueless

Dannyboy said...

Nevertheless, entire sections covered is new, and SHOCKING.

Anonymous said...

Did they tell us about the lap 21 stops when they happened? I don't remember that happening.

Ken-Michigan said...

One of the many NASCAR problems:

Competition Cautions

Just run the stinkin' race.

If the driver or crew doesnt feel safe with RF tire issues...

PIT !!

Roadgeek Adam said...

One other problem for Dover is this. They attempted to become a mini-ISC with several Nationwide series tracks and now its biting them in the rear end.

Gateway = gone, Memphis = gone. Nashville is in limbo. I think we'd still have Memphis & Gateway had it not been for Dover.

Sally said...

Regan Smith's pit crew helps, too. Is that the 'training crew' for Stewart-Haas?

Dannyboy said...

I heard them say it was coming, a while ago.

Anonymous said...

So true Adam - I wish we had Gateway and Memphis back.

Roadgeek Adam said...

Yes JD, they mentioned it for about the entirety of Lap 40.

GinaV24 said...

Surprise, compettion oaution!

Red, you are right about the rain for this race. I'm thinking about talking to my brother about NOT bothering to renew and just buying walk up tickets next year for the spring race. I think this is the 2nd or 3rd time we have opted NOT to go because honestly sitting through the traditional "long green run" in the middle of this race AND possible 70% rain chances does NOT make me excited to go.

Sophia said...

JD

Sorry, Missed that in your post. I scanned it quickly & came here while multitasking. Sorry for the ignorance. I missed the Mulhern comment...still drinking coffee & in slomo today :)

...stunning news really...I also think Two Waltrips in the booth is too much. Larry Mac could use a grammar coach but his knowledge really helped me understand NASCAR when I started watching in 2004.

Hope he gets another gig. I also keep missing his NASCAR show on SPEED.

Sorry again for missing the M Mulhern source, JD.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Thanks, been a bit busy!

jerry said...

Mike mulhern is reporting the Larry Mac story? I'm defiantly taking a wait and see.

Anonymous said...

Mike Joy mentioned the Competition Caution just as it came out. I fully expected a lot of trash talk from Harvick on the Race Day and Fox Pre Race shows and wasn't disappointed. I'm no fan of Kyle Petty, but give him credit for being outspoken about Nascar. Same for Jimmy Spencer. I'm just totally sick and tired of DW,Larry,Joy,Reid, et al

Daly Planet Editor said...

No prob! Mike did not seem amused. SPEED got good feedback from the Mikey and DW Nationwide Series race and the FOX ratings are awful this year again.

Something has to give.

Anonymous said...

The competition caution was mentioned several times.

oldnewenglander said...

Everyone catch that Verizon Indycar commercial?

Would have loved to be a fly on the wall at Fox for those conversations with the Sprint folks.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Jerry, he just passed it along because he knows we do the TV stuff. Said "he heard rumblings" about it.

So, take if for what it is. He's no Captain Thunder, but his track record is a big weak these days.

RWar24 said...

I will always say if you pit on a competition caution, it should be mandatory that you change 4 tires.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Happy to have your comments about the coverage today, positive or negative.

Not happy to have anyone tell anyone else what to think or criticize them for their views.

Same rules since 2007.

Sally said...

Great. We've taken umpteen laps with in cars in the pre race coverage, and we get to miss more of the race doing it again? Oy.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Kind of looking like these guys are trying to run to halfway.

Anonymous said...

Anyone else notice DW using 'man' a lot today? Seems odd, I don't remember him speaking like that before.

GinaV24 said...

well it appears that the 48 team is having their usual great day at dover -- good for them, but from my point of view, it makes this race even less interesting to watch

saltsburgtrojanfan said...

So Fox is not happy with you, JD. Hmmmm.....Interesting. NASCAR on Fox is embarrassing in more ways than one. But hey most of us don't want to hear DW mumble and talk over one of the best in the business and see abysmal producing. What a joke this network has become. It is getting pathetic, like kicking a dead animal

Anonymous said...

How much does Nascrap pay for the flyovers using my tax dollars?

RWar24 said...

That was a bad segment for FOX. Very bland and uninformative.

Roadgeek Adam said...

JD, I have an interesting suggestion for a blog post. An analysis of Mike Joy from 1998 - 2000 working with Ned Jarrett and Buddy Baker vs. Mike Joy working with Darrell and Larry.

Anonymous said...

All of FOX's camera angles bear a sponsor name. I hope FOX sells a sponsor for the "What's Happening At The Speedway" Cam, for I would like to know.

Daly Planet Editor said...

sbtf,

Sometimes, the problem is that the team is locked into a certain type of coverage.

We all have bosses and so do the NASCAR on FOX guys. Change comes from the top, so I understand why they get frustrated.

Just we are the bottom feeders and get the results of the turmoil.

Roland said...

Does the FOX portion of the schedule end at the Coke 600 or at Kansas?

Anonymous said...

DW likes to use the phrase "this joint". Crusty likes the phrase "those cats". Talk about retro!!! They've totally fatigued me....need some new blood!

Daly Planet Editor said...

Adam,

Mike is such a good guy. It's clear he is unhappy. When he did the Modified races on SPEED with Dick Berggren he was like a kid in a candy store.

With DW he just gets trampled.

GinaV24 said...

JD, sorry to hear that the Fox guys are mad at you, but on the other hand, if they did their job better, the fans wouldn't be as unhappy with them and then Fox wouldn't be mad!

bozo said...

In this day of surveys, q ratings, polls, etc.. one would have to think if they are truly thinking about replacing larry that they must have some sort of research behind it, probably demo related... as an over 20 yr watcher of nascar, i take his analysis and knowledge over the other crap that dw and others put out

saltsburgtrojanfan said...

So Fox is just mailing it in and not listening to feedback as well. Continuing to use tight shots and showing only the front. No thank you, I'll pass. I'll join my buddy Vince and not watch at all.

Who's running fox sports because he can't possibly be happy with the coverage.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Kansas is the finale for FOX this season.

RWar24 said...

I think that's been a big downfall for the TV coverage. It's way over-commercialized. I understand that the sponsors pay the bills, but it's just overkill. That's one of the things that I like about the Trucks broadcast. You don't come back from commercial and more of my time doing and ATT racebreak, or the Sprint Shotgun ride and who has the fast lap crap.

Daly Planet Editor said...

bozo,

Some of the NASCAR Fan Council surveys this season have been pretty brutal on the TV guys.

Asking right up front who you liked, who you did not and why.

Be interesting to find out where that stuff goes.

Anonymous said...

I'm glad they're going through the field. Looks like everyone is just hanging on, don't see any battles.

Ken-Michigan said...

Amazing....

80 laps into the race and I havent even seen the 24 car, 14 car or 29 car.

RWar24 said...

JD - Probably the paper shredder.

Charlie said...

Tight shots do NOT show the race under green.
You have no idea how close other cars are to the car they are zooming in on and you have no feel for the speed these cars are traveling on this track.

Anonymous said...

A car doesn't appear on the tv screen until after the check clears. Facemelter. Sprint has no respect for their customers, either.

Daly Planet Editor said...

It's a 4-G Face Melter!

red said...

it may just be a function of my twitter timeline but there seem to be fewer tweets than normal for a race day. is everyone getting bored simultaneously?!?

saltsburgtrojanfan said...

JD, I hear ya.

So in other words that producer of Fox and all other execs, who i will not say because i will cuss at their names, are aware of the fan backlash and do not care.

Well if they do not care why should I.

I hope this races ratings get no rating, A zip, a 0.000.

It is too late for this year but next year Fox better get their heads out of their hine parts and provide better coverage.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Commercial before pit stops?

bozo said...

JD, that's what i mean, maybe we are all wet here...maybe the surveys are showing that DW is the most loved announcer on the team, maybe the young people love him... these guys are in business to make money, there must be something behind their decisions, right? or is mgmt hooked on dw and are ignoring the surveys? would love to see the data...

Daly Planet Editor said...

red, no one around. Numbers down for all of us on blogs, websites and most media.

Ken-Michigan said...

12 or 13 laps of racing.

6 laps of commercials.

Some real thought and changes need to be made in how these races are broadcast.

I'd rather see a 6 minute commercial break under caution than take away from green flag action.

lets see how they handle green flag stops. lots of 2 video boxes hopefully.

Daly Planet Editor said...

bozo,

That is always the conflict. Serve the fan base or incite them?

We have seen that all the way back to Howard Cosell on MNF.

It should be interesting to see how TNT does with Kyle and Wally this season on what is a pretty weak package of races in the summertime.

Remember, even RaceBuddy is not a race feed. No online race feed of any Cup race this season. Can't grab your iPad or phone and watch.

red said...

jd, it will be interesting to see if "business" picks up when TNT takes over. i'm usually at the track for this race so i can't compare to previous seasons but when even my twitter feed is relatively quiet, the state of the sport is not healthy.

GinaV24 said...

They must be getting ready for green flag stops based on what I'm hearing on the scanner.

Based on past experience AT the track at Dover, what you're seeing on TV is what is happening on the track. The field gets strung out, the leaders are real fast and they start lapping the field. I always wish there was a place at the track I could lay down and take a nap during this segment of the race.

They have been showing the 24 car - believe me - I always know when they don't! It's just they are running mid pack and not making much forward progress even though they have a decent car.

Anonymous said...

FOX is building value for Sprint's facemelter replays by never broadcasting interesting moments live.

There is no way on God's green earth that teens like an old coot like DW or appreciate his history.

larry said...

I'm just checking in on the TV...muted of course.

I get my race info from Twitter and Race Trax.

RE: Larry Mac...I noticed during one of the nascar now roundtables that Rusty corrected some bad (Larry Mac like) grammar and the entire table started murmuring and grinning during the transition to commercial. I wonder if there is any new rule about grammar...

Sally said...

The advantage TNT has are Kyle and Wally. They have no agenda, have no 'brand' loyalties, and aren't afraid to speak their minds. They keep it entertaining even when the tracks and races they cover are boring!

Cathy said...

Are these guys evenin the same booth (or just not listening to each other)? MJ - "Last fall Johnson & Allmendinger combined to lead 334 laps." LM - " Speaking of green flag stops...." DW - "And another thing I don't like about the pit walls here..."

GinaV24 said...

@racingtheoldway -- I think it's more likely the lack of posters here means that at lot of fans have simply stopped bothering with NASCAR at all.

I LOVE Mike Joy! His voice has always been like comfort food. I just told my house mate about the changes & he only seldom watches now, like me, due to shoddy camera work but he said "I Love Larry Mac!"

Then again, my housemate was let go from his job last week (BIG SHOCK about cutting costs :( )so has some empathy for others losing one. Scary times.

I love all the SPEED & FOX guys on tv (except DW is a bit much at times) but if they made the camera work better, we'd watch.

switched to race just now to see Regan hit the guardrail.

it's overwheleming to tweet about weather, planting flowers, food, Reds, NASCAR, local stuff, read this blog (thus missing the OBVIOUS Mike M reference) listen to Reds on Radio, tv muted, switch to NASCAR during commercials, try to read this blog, talk to housemate, listening for baby birds in nest outside to catch a photo (saw glimpse of babies 2 days ago)

Daly Planet Editor said...

Junior just told his crew he lost his focus and hit the wall.

Seriously!

How many of you have been at the track. You guys know races at Dover are marathons. Even a thunderstorm can delay races there for hours. And in the early days of TV at Dover they just tape delay the event and run cut the telecast to about 45 minutes to an hour.

So Dover is no friend to TV.

RWar24 said...

Unless something pops up, which is possible, radar doesn't look bad around the track.

GinaV24 said...

so that means that Darlington will have to find another sponsor for it's race if Showtime pulls out.

It annoyed me the whole day when they kept announcing over the PA system that it was the 62nd running of the Showtime Southern 500! Agh. No, the Southern 500 was run on Labor Day and Showtime was NOT around 62 years ago. (Maybe it was 52) the PA system was so darned loud with all of the nonsense they spout at the track before the race, I had to put my scanner headset on so I didn't get a major headache.

RAIN!!

Mr Editor -
Interesting that I have to hunt for race streaming live online ...of 5 stations I checked, 3 are not streaming race, 1 cut from race to replay of weekday program ...4th station has 45-sec delay, maybe uplink/downlink? ...WTH ...so much for MRN affiliates toeing the line

When you watch a camera shot and the shot goes to another camera is the guy in the truck telling the people what camera shot to show on Tv.
If so why do we get some camera shots that are only shown for less then a second and then is switched to another camera.
Did the director make a mistake and called out the wrong camera or did the guy flicking the switch to show that shot on Tv hit the wrong switch or did the director think there was a good camera view there but then saw it wasn't a good shot and was able to switch cameras in a millisecond.
I am just wondering why you see some camera shots for less then a millisecond. Is this a mistake.

GinaV24 said...

they were trying to wait to get to halfway! Damn nascar - do we need a major wreck!

Sally said...

Wow. We sure missed a lot during that commercial break. again.

Roland said...

@w17scott - Try WTDR from Talladega. They are pretty close to live for me

Roadgeek Adam said...

Radar: There are some green around Dover and Lebanon to the south. This shouldn't stay long hopefully. The major system Larry was pointing out is still over Martinsburg & Hagerstown.

Daly Planet Editor said...

RWar, big one just popped up and teams are getting ready for rain.

Anonymous said...

There is a whole 'nother race on twitter. Maybe FOX could go there!

w17scott said...

@Roland ...thanks muchly ...will do

Roadgeek Adam said...

Yeah radar is forecasting 4:45 the major storm will be here.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Dinger to the garage!

Fox tells it's people. Don't worry to much about telling what is going on live or worry about showing it live - We Have Replay.

Anonymous said...

New tagline!

NASCAR on FOX...We Have Replay!

Charlie said...

If you rely on the ticker to know where your driver is, it takes 4 laps to have the ticker come back around to your driver.
So every 4 laps you get an update or 25% of the time you know where your driver is. The other 75% of the time you have to guess.

Daly Planet Editor said...

That was pretty funny.

What is Jeff Hammond's twitter account?

Daly Planet Editor said...

He is @hollywoodjeff

@hollywoodjeff

There is a picture of Snooki on it.

@charlie...real time full-page ticker is here http://msn.foxsports.com/nascar/cup/raceTrax

Daly Planet Editor said...

Almost halfway, the excitement is building....right?

Anonymous said...

JD - Sure, says the 5 fans still awake.

GinaV24 said...

thanks, JD for Hammond's twitter name. I'm a big fan of Hammond. He's very underused on Fox. I love his "show and tell" on Racehub.

This tweet just said there is rain.

Charlie said...

Did they mention we are halfway.

Sunshine will only make atmosphere more unstable.

Another shower on radar "should" slide just east of Dover and move north.

Replay under green because we were to zoomed in to show you in real time.

Ben Florance said...

Classic FOX, Mike Joy describes Kyle Busch going up the racetrack and saving his car while we are stuck with the same shot of Truex and Ambrose

I recall the days past when the booth and pit reporters would identify differing strategies the teams were using and keep us informed as to how those strategies were progressing. "Oh, well," he said, as his voice trailed off...

GinaV24 said...

well they officially made it to halfway, so whatever happens now is official.

I think I'm actually glad I'm not there. This is pretty dull stuff

Sally said...

Again, we really have no idea what is happening on the track. It could be the most exciting race ever, but that isn't on the Fox agenda.

Anonymous said...

@ Anon 255 - I wish. The first 70-75 laps were good. But ever since the long green flag run, this broadcast has sputtered and just stalled.

Sophia said...

P.S. I used to enjoy getting caught up on the Races on Speed Center but THEY need a new host. No offense but I can't take ADAM ALEXANDER CONSTANT YELLING!?

Does nobody in the production room notice this??? IT's a real turn off and exhausting to listen to...Need a Bob Varsha in there to calm things down. I hate to call somebody out by name but AA is NOT a good host. Needs a co-host or give the gig to a laid back guy like Varsha.

Still watch Wind Tunnel religiously and DVR the Indycar weekly show on Vs. WT needs to be TWO HOURS on tv but I love the online 30 min!!! :)

now back to the race & trying to read the ticker...glad it wasn't just me about the paint schemes. I miss the familiarity of my driver in photos or video clips. Shame really, but sign of the times...but can't they stay with similar COLORS at least? (No, soph)

Charlie said...

Look at that, they can zoom out and show you half the track. Amazing.

Then back to in-car cam.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Holy cow! I just had two friends from Twitter who are at the track mail me some pics from the stands.

It is empty. I am shocked.

Ken-Michigan said...

The AT&T Race Break breaks up any kind of rhythm the booth has going.

Anonymous said...

That zoom-out button must be about 240F as seldom used as it is.

Anonymous said...

Empty stands. Overzoom television. Ratings falling. Walmouth family overload. Absolutely Orwellian.

GinaV24 said...

well, I know 2 people - me and my brother who had tickets and didn't go today.

Like I said in a previous post, I'm giving a lot of thought to just going with "walk up tickets" next year. Based on the sight of the stands, I could pick my spot without any problem.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Yep, something has to give. It really does.

Sally said...

JD...something IS giving...as in UP. the fans seem to have decided to pretty much give up on Nascar, whether it's at the track or on TV. But no one seems to notice. Or care.

Are we getting the real scoop from pit reporters. On lap 110 pit stop 29 radio said wicked tight, Steve B relates that 29 was wicked loose.

Anonymous said...

Use the pit reporters!!!!
