Live Blogging Sprint Cup Series From Kentucky (TNT - 6:30PM ET)

The good news is that the track is a sellout tonight. The bad news is that for those of us watching on TV, full-screen commercials are back.

Kentucky Speedway is an odd duck. Located where few wanted a major speedway, Bruton Smith wound-up buying the place and leveraging one of his own race dates to bring a Sprint Cup Series date to a track that had hosted Nationwide and Truck Series races for over ten years.

Tonight, TNT plays to a packed house. Lindsay Czarniak is up first hosting the Countdown to Green pre-race show. Kyle Petty and Larry McReynolds will be on the TNT Infield Rig with her for the hour show.

Adam Alexander will then pair with Petty and Wally Dallenbach Jr. for the call of the race. Chris Neville, Matt Yocum, Marty Snider and Ralph Sheheen will be handling pit road.

This is a track known for a narrow groove, little passing and fuel mileage races. That makes it a big challenge for TV. Pit strategy, including tires will be a key to the race. Passes for the lead may well happen off pit road.

The number of cautions will feed into the number of double-file restarts. Long green flag periods will make it tough for TV. The producer is going to have to chase the best racing on the track and go after the stories unfolding on pit road.

Kentucky makes good pictures under the lights as ESPN and SPEED have shown over the years of producing NNS and truck races. The challenge is for TNT to make this telecast as memorable as possible by continuing to frame it as a first time opportunity for drivers in the field.

This post will serve to host your comments on the TNT coverage of the Sprint Cup Series race from Kentucky Speedway. To add your TV-related comments, just click on the comments button below. Thanks for stopping by.

Doing the Inside Traxx during pit stops is frankly stupid. You're missing the golden opportunity to update the fans about the drivers and cars that we want to know. This is ranking right up there with the draft tracker toy. Two thumbs down.

Charlie, some called in this afternoon a little before 2pm to Ken Broo on WLW radio & got to track in 90 minutes to 2.5 hrs from Cincinnati & other cities east which was good time since on drive was 45 minutes normally & other 1.15 min.

Some folks knew the sneak around ways in that GPS would not show. Still, it seems unforeseen.

And if a car owner got there 86 laps late? That can't be regular deal.

Still the talk radio guys heard 85% HORROR stories for those who left "normal early" for NASCAR traffic :)

Course some tweeps spell traffic that bad "Differently" but I can't use on this site.

Wonder if TNT will promo the new DALLAS w Larry Hagman...not sure when it starts...

Apparently a helicopter crash about 30 miles from the track - dunno if it was headed to the track or not.

Anonymous said...

Mr. Daly, didn't ESPN experiment with this kind of coverage in the pre-Dolby Digital 1990's?

GinaV24 said...

Palmetto -- that's so awesomely funny!

Jonathan, LOL, yeah I see your point. I am trapped in an office all day so i tend to get my sun on the weekends, too.

OMG FINALLY CAUTION.

Anonymous said...

It seems long green flags will lead to the fuel mileage scenario, get passed halfway and start saving fuel

Anonymous said...

My prayers have been answered! Not much from Petty or Wally

Buschseries61 said...

This is what I hate about covering pit stops after the actual stops. There is no organization to these reports. We jumped from 9th to 2nd to 3rd to 1st. Only 4 cars were covered out of 30+.

Anonymous said...

Two laps - Kudzu.

KudzuCarl said...

Hold your applause. It wasn't hard to predict this caution.

Anonymous said...

I was typing when the Caution came out. Did they show the debris?

TheBleacherCreature said...

How could you ever say?:
"Some folks like it because they know the actual race is kinda boring and some folks hate it and want the info as it happens."

Competition caution #2

Roadgeek Adam said...

Again dead silence by Snider and the Gang, its boring to listen to them do this.

Palmetto said...

Buschseries61, that's a great point. With this format, they stick with a car through it's entire stop to get the braking and acceleration sounds. Normally we'd hear enough details from a pit road reporter to know what was going on, then skip to another car. That way dedicates les time to an individual car, but we get more cars and more information about each of them.

This is just 'Crank It Up' on Cialis.

Sophia said...

re: the Helicopter crash, he has been ID'd but nobody knew where he was heading. I'm guessing it wasn't the race or somebody would've known. Must have flight pattern around that kind of traffic unless you are some cowboy pilot type & those do exist.

Actually a good pilot of any plane or copter always phones in where he/she is going.

Horrible tragedy for the pilot though...so far no connection to the race.

Are all of you still glad Fox is done for the year.......8 laps racing, 5 laps commercials. this pattern got old real quick. My wife caught me going over to the Cubs game. the whole run of pitstops without comments or cuts to the :racing: was a total waste.

I feel sorry for those fans Anon 913.

WOW ! Marty Smith of ESPN reporting on Twitter that after hours & HOURS of waiting to get into race, fans being turned AWAY makes him sick.

How's Bruton Smith gonna spin this mess? Sadder we will NEVER hear of if on SPEED :(

Anonymous said...

TNT just copped one of Tim Brewer's ESPN scripts.

GinaV24 said...

Mortongrovedon -- yes, for my part I am still glad that Fox is done for the year. TNT has the worst tracks to cover - although they apparently are taking the hyperclose coverage tactic that fox likes for their own use - maybe because they have RB.

I am not looking forward to ESPN taking over either.

Who's spotter am I hearing? Identification, please.

Jonathan said...

Well JD were past half way... Only thing that I remember you saying about this "Enhanced Audio" is that its different. I know you dont like to comment on the broadcast till its over but if you could comment on your thoughts so far if not at least give me a thumbs up or down?? Im done commenting about it after this post but Adam said before the race started that were going to be able to hear what the fans hear aka being there live.... I say then maybe put a few camera guys in the crowd and for a few laps lets actually see and hear what its like to be there live... Sorry but unless you rent or have a scanner you dont hear the spotters and unless your lucky enough to be able to be on pit road you dont hear/see the stops up close for that long (overkill on tv in my book)... maybe have one round of green flag pit stops from the stands as I said before... Fox did a great job of bringing the feel of being there live and up close w some of the "Crank it up" segments this year... new camera angles were added start finish line (they used that in 2010) If I want the broadcast to feel like im there thats why I want... I took some videos w my digital cam at Phoenix and it reminded me of crank it... thats the one segment that makes me think im for a split secound there lol ok im done :)

Comment from my 8-year-old when she walked into the room -- "Are there only 3 cars in this race?" --

GinaV24 said...

Mortongrove - I would say that is a good assessment. I don't really enjoy any of the coverage by any of them. It's only because I still follow the sport that I bother to watch it and that is only possible with computer assistance.

Adam -- from what I can gather on the scanner about the 234, the car is not too loose in traffic and too tight into the corners with the splitter hitting. He's not running that bad lap times but they just can't pass, but I've heard that before about this track.

Roadgeek Adam said...

Back to boring racing. This makes the Truck and Nationwide Series races look like wreckfest. Let's hope we get closer to the finish (101 to go now) that we can have a more bunched up field.

Buschseries61 said...

So far this run is a much better effort from TNT.

Anonymous said...

People leaving the track at halftime to beat the traffic, already jammed. what a mess. good chance fuel mileage may determine this if nascar quits throwing the debris cautions

Anonymous said...

tunein.com is perfect - I have no prn or mrn radio stations nearby (SF Bay area) and RaceBuddy isn't working for me (didn't work last week either). The radio I'm now listening to is half a beat behind the tv picture but they ae covring the entire field - omg - what a concept. Thanks Roland for the info.

RWar24 said...

If people are leaving early, then the fans coming in can have a parking spot.

Daly Planet Editor said...

NASCAR wants me to make it clear they have nothing to do with traffic for the tracks.

The track wants me to make it clear they cannot build public roads but continue to work with the local and state GOV to make changes for the future.

In other words, both parties involved tonight say it is not their fault.

Sweet.

Roadgeek Adam said...

Gina - Thank you. You would be the person to find out about it.

It's nice to see someone not Kyle Busch in front for a short distance.

OSBORNK said...

Has any consideration been given for returning the fuel capacity back to what it used to be so the snoozefest fuel mileage races could return to actual racing?

MrtonGroveDon said...

The traffic mess sounds like when I had tickets to Las Vegas the first few years. The cutting in and out from shots every 5 seconds is very annoying.Im not enjoying the single car shots either but no one is running close enough to do any overtaking.

Daly Planet Editor said...

This from Ralph Sheheen during the race:

"90 laps to go and there are still cars lines up trying to get into the Kentucky Speedway...WOW!!!"

Palmetto said...

Thanks, Kyle. That cockpit shot of Tony makes more sense when you tell me what I'm looking at.

Buschseries61 said...

OSBORNK - I've noticed the same thing & thought they were pitting way more than usual.

glenc1 said...

lol...that's priceless JD. I could say 'how stupid do they think we are' but it would be pointless.

RWar24 said...

Traffic for this year's Indy 500 was the worse I have ever experience in the 8 years I've gone. But it sounds like it wasn't squat compared to what has been experienced @ KY Speedway. Not good..

Sophia said...

Yes the turn away is TRUE.

I feel so badly for the fans I could almost cry. The EGO of Bruton Smith will spin BS on this. BUT he can't blame LACK of PARKING on roads/local police help.

Has this ever happened before? I've only been around NASCAR since 2004 & not much this year as far as WATCHING races but do try to keep up on news. But are we allowed to GET real news of REAL problems with NASCAR.

Brian France said everything is JUST GREAT! In this economy to screw over fans?

My house mate said even FREE tickets & HOTEL rooms paid by Bruton would NOT make him want to return.

Wow, Cincinnati has been singing the praise of this race all week. Tomorrow morning on SPORTSTALK radio should be crazy!!

Anonymous said...

does this give bruton more leverage with the local and state govt to get new roads?

Sally said...

Didn't it occur to anyone that traffic is always a consideration for a race? Part of a track being able to handle a Cup race should be an ability to move traffic in and out of the track in a reasonable time. I can't imagine how angry I would be if I paid for tickets and never got into the track!

Palmetto said...

"In other words, both parties involved tonight say it is not their fault."

JD, there's at least one other party involved: the Kentucky Highway Patrol.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Palmetto, they got no dog in this fight. A two-lane road is a two-lane road.

Roadgeek Adam said...

I remember the last race I went to at my home track, Pocono. Route 115 was backed up about 45 minutes longer than normal.

Has any consideration been given for returning the fuel capacity back to what it used to be so the snoozefest fuel mileage races could return to actual racing?

July 9, 2011 9:39 PM

Remember also that the green fuel they use now gets less mileage than the 'real' stuff they used previously

GinaV24 said...

JD, Marty Smith just tweeted the "official statement" from the track pres. LOL

If I had paid money for a ticket, sat in traffic for hrs and then been turned away when i got there, there would be no NEXT year for me.

Adam, always glad to help out a fellow fan. Jeff just said on the radio, "this has to be the most frustrating place I've ever raced".

Palmetto said...

Sophia, yes, this has happened before, and at another Bruton Smith track hosting its first Cup race - Texas in '97 or '98. Until this weekend, it was the standard for how to NOT control race traffic.

Apparently everyone involved is denying culpability, and obviously there's plenty of blame to go around.

Buschseries61 said...

NASCAR & Good Year need to talk about this tire.

KoHoSo said...

The State Patrol probably did all they could. I saw tweets reporting that they were letting a lot of stuff slide as people were doing whatever they could to either get to the track or turn around to go home (of course, tweets are not an official news source so take that with the appropriate amount of salt grains).

Palmetto said...

While we're listening to Shrub's stop, we're not being told who else is on pit road this lap.

Buschseries61 said...

With different strategies, their pit road silence just won't work. Smart decision to drop it after Busch's stop.

Sophia said...

so is it just ONE fan turned away via Marty Smith? He seems ballistic over just 1 being one too many & I SEE his point.

If you sell out x amount of tickets don't ESTIMATE parking places & traffic. But how can just ONE CAR be turned away if others are leaving already. SOmething is not adding up.

Turning on the tv to see if there are more than 3 cars in the race :) via Kudzu Carl !?

RWar24 said...

The track is a half mile from the interstate. Sounds to me like a huge fail in organization on how to direct the people into the facility. Yes the access is limited, but once you're there, get them parked and off the road.

OSBORNK said...

It's not one party's fault. It is both of them's fault. The track should not have had a race without being aware and working with the State and local authorities to make sure the traffic issue was addressed but the governing bodies should have not allowed (there is usually a permit required) the race to be held without making sure the traffic issue was addressed. There are no innocent parties in this mess.

Roadgeek Adam said...

Gina: And he is at a major disadvantage, he's never raced here in race form. He's tested here apparently.

glenc1 said...

I think both Las Vegas and Texas had issues, Sophia. Vegas might have been before Bruton bought it. Don't remember it being this bad though.

Certainly we never heard about anything like this at Chicagoland or Kansas, both of which I think are 'out of town' to so speak.

Watkins Glen and Pocono are the smallest areas without a major Interstate really close, I'm guessing. But I also think they have a lot of campers who come early and spend the weekend.

Oy vey, this season is the worst ever.

Roadgeek Adam said...

There's the accursed commercial again...

KudzuCarl said...

I really hate this Samsung Infuze spider commercial.

GinaV24 said...

I hate that stupid commercial about the phone. That woman makes me ashamed to be female!

Wally's on a roll again tonight. When the #14 pitted, he said that "Tony doesn't just sit there. He has to keep the wheel straight and keep his foot on the brake". Thought I was listening to Marty Reid for a second. This race seems to drag on. Not a lot of on-track door to door passing.

Roadgeek Adam said...

Glen - Interstate 80 is in pretty close range to Pocono off Traffic Route 115. However, that short distance between Interstate 80 and Traffic Route 115 was 45 mins - 1 hour before we got to park.

Thank you for your answer. Bruton Smith is the guy that likes to entertain & put on big shows before races right?

how could they over look such a fundamental detail??

And who pays for extra road access or new roads?

On 700wlw radio earlier today Bruton Said Ky needed BETTER Roads and was 'not a slam to KY as it's Fed money'...as if his race should get for FREE it's own road. I am very confused.

My nephew lives in Va Beach & is an engineer. Down there you can't build a subdivision in a new area unless the ROADS are made FIRST!! The opposite happens in OH...just keep building up junk/sprawl & after 15 yrs or more of aggravating...then add new roads.

All the HAPPY TALK on this race & this is egg on the face of Sparta.

Be curious was Jerry Carrol (sp) Original owner is thinking of this major blunder.

Traffic backed up for a couple of years at the old Riverside International Raceway
when “they” decide it was a good idea to hold an air show at March Air Force base which (is) was located about 5 miles south of the racetrack. When it was announced over the loud speakers that the start of the race was going to be delayed to allow the late comers time to get into the track, the boos from the stands “could be heard for miles.” Did get to see the SR-71 do flyovers though

J.w.R. said...

Me and my dad just got back to our home in Kentucky. We left here at 1 p.m. heading to the racetrack, got there by 3 p.m. and sat in traffic for 4 hours till 7 p.m. and decided by the time we made it to the track we could make it back home and watch more of the race. We went a back way into the track, to avoid I71. Completely unbelievable and as for radio keeping those updated in their cars, it was useless until about 6 p.m. when they finally said traffic on I71 was backed up 18 miles.

A traffic officer we saw around 5 p.m. was telling people it was bad all the way up to the track and parking was the issue. Closest we could have parked was 5 miles from the track and that would have meant parking at 6:30, hiking the 5 miles to the track and definitely missing the first part.

Total disaster, just glad to be back in watching what I can on t.v. Sorry for the long post, just had to give some info.

Roadgeek Adam said...

Gina: Well, Jeff and Alan made a good decision there, they are now 12th. Let's hope it sustains.

Pocono is easy to get to, depending what time you get there. I go camping off of 380, not for the race commonly. 380 & 80 get backed up every dang holiday weekend.

So we have had "Wide Open", then "Audio Enhanced", whats next week, Commercial with limited interruption by actual racing? Oh wait thats every week.

TNT obviously recorded the Jamie interview. He was being interviewed by PRN when the TNT interview started rolling.

glenc1 said...

Adam, I heard some talk of them building a bigger road to Pocono but it hasn't happened. One reason Ive never been. Been in the neighborhood but not during Cup weekends.

The Glen is close to a lot of big state highways and county roads--I'm thinking maybe a half hour from the Interstate. Traffic is really not bad. I compare only because it's small like Sparta.

Adam, that's true, the 24 tested but not actual race conditions. One of the things I thought NASCAR should reinstate was allowing testing at the actual tracks. IMO it would improve the racing.

Palmetto, 220 north of the track is 2 lanes in both directions. It takes 4ever to get out of the parking lots at M'ville but you can make decent time going back to NC once you do.

Been to Bristol, been to Indy and never experienced anything close to this. Even been to 3 Nationwide/Busch series races at Kentucky and never had a problem like this. Bruton can say what he wants, he added 50 K more seats to a place that could only handle, MAYBE, another 10-15 K seats.

KoHoSo said...

Palmetto...no problem here. I think we're all searching for answers and, as humans do, looking for who caused this mess.

I'm just very upset over this whole thing as it could get worse. As a Kentuckian (now living in SoCal), I had hoped this would be a night for my home state to shine. Instead, it's a total debacle. :-(

Sally said...

I really don't understand the logic of giving exclusive coverage to pit stops while ignoring the cars still on the track. Does this make sense to anyone else?

Buschseries61 said...

You would think now is a good time to update cars that were struggling in the first half of the race as they pit. Instead we get silence.

I've gotten more info on Jeff Gordon from Twitter than TNT.

Roadgeek Adam said...

Now this race should get interesting.

glenc1 said...

I hope those folks don't plan on making church in the morning, lol. I must say, though, it sounds like parking was the issue more than the exit. It doesnt take a rocket scientist to realize they only show the top 10 cars. Plenty of Kahne first half when he was 4th, not a word or shot now that he's 20th. But Jr. blows a tire in 22nd and theres a shot!

Also,I think they only show the tight shots because the director in the truck only has a small monitor, and really cant see the field, where we at home have a much larger TV to watch and see a much broader view.

Just my opinion.

The local law enforcement in Las Vegas did a great job with traffic for those races. We've been going for a number of years, and it has not been all that bad. Now, if you want insane, the CART race in Nazareth Pa was the worst, even worse than for the Indy 500 in it's heyday. You're not going to see a sell out next year. Too many really angry people and bad publicity will equal lots less fans in 2012.

For the past four weeks, it's been looking like the Jr of the past 5 years. He's slowly dropping back to non-contender status------again.

Palmetto said...

KoHoSo, it can only get worse tonight. As someone else pointed out, fans were arriving all day. Now they're all going to try to leave at the same time. I hope law enforcement turns a blind eye to people getting out of their cars to make 'pit stops'.

Are you kidding me with this Sprint crap? My God!!

Roadgeek Adam said...

And if Clint hasn't had much luck lately.

Palmetto said...

Five to go and we get an in-car? And miss Bowyer's problem???

Buschseries61 said...

A sprint ad & audio silence at the same time....wow

rich said...

Just no play by play on that restart. Just dead air

KoHoSo said...

Palmetto...again assuming that all of these reports are correct, I hope you are right about the KY State Patrol. I'm starting to wonder if Governor Beshear needs to be headed to the emergency management center at this point to control this mess from the top.

GinaV24 said...

why the heckdid they go to a full screen commercial for sprint with so few laps to go!

Anonymous said...

Geeze, they all shut up and nearly miss the wreck because we HAVE to hear the stupid spotters. These production decisions stink.

Anonymous said...

This TNT coverage is a joke, right? Full screen ads and no commentary inside 10 laps? They are doing this just to see if anybody is paying attention - they have to be.

Anonymous said...

What idiot in the Truck showed that full screen, over the shoulder Sprint commercial with 6-7 laps left?? And they miss Boyer spinning out. Just brilliant!

Anonymous said...

hey sprint WTH was that?

Roland said...

That annoying Sprint crap did not just take over the screen with 6 laps to go did it? Un-freakin-believable. That one takes the cake.

Anonymous said...

What is TNT thinking tonight. Horrible broadcast.

Roadgeek Adam said...

The TV Police will be busy tonight? Anyone have a shoe-phone?

Palmetto said...

Don, a four-door hatchback with a 4-banger. I drive for gas mileage anyway.

glenc, Raceway Ministries will tend to their spiritual needs. They may have to go car to car to do it...

Daly Planet Editor said...

What a way to close it out. Missing Clint due to a Sprint plug after a night of boredom.

Anonymous said...

...as NASCAR chokes itself to death on advertising.

OSBORNK said...

This has to be the worst broadcast ever done by TNT.

Buschseries61 said...

Still amazed at what TNT just did.

Anonymous said...

Dear TNT....NEVER do this ENHANCED RACE TRAX or whatever its called. Horrible Horrible Horrible. If I wanted to hear NAT sound I would subsribe to DIRECTV HotPass.

J.w.R said...

@Palamento People were making pit stops the entire time we sat there in traffic. Going off to the side into the bushes and coming back. Local police were letting plenty go, just glad we made the choice to turn tail and come back after sitting for 4 hours.

Anonymous said...

Who's gonna play taps when NASCAR finally gives up the ghost? This "sport" is nothing but a joke. Two car tandem teams, boring races, terrible TV coverage and now this debacle that will be glossed over by everyone. Bruton will have as many excuses as a pregnant duck and will point fingers at everyone but himself.

Palmetto said...

Good fantasy night; I had four out of five drivers in the top 12.

Anonymous said...

Garbage race. Garbage broadcast.

OSBORNK said...

The best car with the best driver won the race whether you like him or not.

KoHoSo said...

Roadgeek Adam...Maxwell Smart would be appropriate considering ho much TNT used "The Cone of Silence" tonight. :-D

Let's see if we get all 11 minutes of post-race coming up.

Rambo M. said...

Congratulations TNT, coverage so bad that I struggled to give a damn about anything happening in the race until the last 30 laps.

Something has got to give. NASCAR is in a suicidal spiral.

Anonymous said...

Kyle Busch makes look easy like the best in all sports do. Great, clean finish! Thanks JD, for all your hard work.

GinaV24 said...

Adam, Jeff thinks he should have been 10th even though the nascar scoring showed him 11th. I hope he's right.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Make sure before you leave to stop by the TV Police post and leave a nice post-race wrap-up on the TNT coverage today.

We will keep this post live until TNT is off the air.

Another #KBShow :( But happy for Reuti to take 2nd

Sally said...

Every time I watch a 'race' like that with 'coverage' like this, I kick myself for spending an entire evening in front of the TV, it makes me feel stupid. I keep hoping that one of these cookie cutters will produce a race worth watching. The eternal optimist, doomed to disappointment. Sigh.

J.w.R. said...

Brutal day for me, brutal race coverage by TNT. Definitely not a good weekend to follow the 2-car tandem race for Nascar.

Least what appeared to be one of the 3 best cars won the race, I suppose.

Anonymous said...

I'm with Sally. I feel like I just wasted another Saturday night.

I still like the racing, but the coverage is just brutal and it keeps getting worse and worse.

TNT is by far the worst of the there, and that's saying something with the ESPN crew still to come.

Who in the world approves stupid stuff like this "ambient sound" racing coverage.

Anonymous said...

Sally, you nailed it.

Sophia said...

How did jr end up 30th? I thought he was 8th or better?

can't watch Reds, racing, tweet & blog

Anonymous said...

Steve Retarte took 0 tires on a gas-n-go stop and what do you know, Jr blew a left front!

Charlie said...

Sophia - Jr blew a left front tire and had to pit again.

Palmetto said...

Get a good night's sleep Kyle. Maybe by the time you're ready to leave, the traffic will have cleared.

Steve L. said...

Just like all the other NASCAR races for the past few years, the racing starts with 10-20 laps to go. Sure makes for boring racing until then. Just think how boring it would have been if JR. had not blown the tire....Not good racing. Not good TV coverage either.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Please move your comments up to the TV Police post.

Thanks for hanging in there tonight with this telecast.
