Live Blogging Sprint Cup Series from Watkins Glen (ESPN - 10AM)

Update: Here we go again. The rain delayed race is now set for 10AM on Monday. Click to the comments section and join us for live chat.

There is rain in the area and Watkins Glen is a big road course that takes a long time to dry. The good news is that the race itself has the potential to really make some good TV.

Nicole Briscoe hosts the Infield Pit Studio with Rusty Wallace and Brad Daugherty. No doubt these three will be talking about rivalries and the points leading up to the Chase. ESPN has an hour to fill, so keep an eye on the mix of pre-produced features vs. live interviews.

Jamie Little is off working the IndyCar race today from Loudon, NH for ABC. Shannon Spake is working pit road at the Glen with Dr. Jerry Punch, Vince Welch and Dave Burns.

Allen Bestwick, Dale Jarrett and Andy Petree worked the Nationwide Series race on Saturday which produced very little excitement. Luckily, the handful of Sprint Cup Series drivers who dominated the Saturday event cannot do the same today.

Tim Brewer is in the Tech Garage. The normal road course issues include fueling the cars on the passenger side, pitting with driver's side away from pit wall and stopping early to get a break late. It's a road course.

ESPN had a tough time on Saturday telling the stories of anyone except the cars in the front of the pack. Sometimes, the current leader means nothing as fuel will not allow that car to finish. The stories are who can go the distance and what strategies are unfolding for teams throughout the race.

The network has a wonderful aerial shot mixed with all the normal angles we see at the Glen. Saturday's finish was shown from the camera at the far end of the frontstretch. While viewers did see the lead lap cars finish, it was tough to tell who was who at that distance.

While the Nationwide Series has rain tires and wipers, the Sprint Cup Series does not. Rain at this track could well delay the race until Monday. There is no information yet, but ESPN2 would probably be the destination. NASCAR would likely not make that decision until late afternoon. There are no lights at the Glen.

Wow, that looks awful. Glad he's OK.

Roadgeek Adam said...

Wicked lick for Hamlin, of course now all this strategy has gone to hell.

Don said...

They've got a shutoff switch, wonder why he didn't use it?

Bill said...

Looks like Denny's throttle stuck. Not good to see, especially being a fellow Richmonder.

Steve L. said...

That's why we need Tim Brewer at the track, to tell us about the cut-off switch!

Roadgeek Adam said...

In fairness to the cut-off switch, it was likely too late, he was headed for the wall, engine or no engine running.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Wonder if Denny will have a little something to say about JGR engines?

Sally said...

It seems the only time amyone hits the cutoff switch is by accident. I don't recall anyone ever hitting it when their throttle sticks.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Think that is really what happened?

Looked at it again. Front tires locked, rear tires driving.

Hey, at least he is OK.

Don said...

Hope Ambrose can get closer. I'd really like a race in the last 5 laps. Doesn't look like Busch will be toppled at this point.

Steve L. said...

It's about caution time!

Roadgeek Adam said...

Lap 79, Marcos beat Kyle by .37 of a second. If kept consistently, he will get there.

KudzuCarl said...

Listening to MRN at work. I love the excitement in their voices and the word pictures.

Anonymous said...

Really a commercial?

Anonymous said...

Brewer is there - or somewhere. He showed us how to clean the grill earlier!

Anonymous said...

Seeing Ambrose catch Busch would have been fun to see. Too bad ESPN runs commercials every five minutes and we don't see any of this race.

Don said...

I don't want a green-white-checker. I want an actual, unmolested race.

Having said that, I sense a debris caution is in the cards. Just give me five good laps to the finish.

saltsburgtrojanfan said...

The AT&T commercial with the guy dancing in public gets the ward for most obnoxious commercial. That ad just grates on my nerves

Don said...

The grill-cam would be much more useful here than the chest-cam

Don said...

That was a BIG mistake by Kyle. Ambrose should have gotten him if he was ever going to.

Roadgeek Adam said...

There's your caution, but it was unexpected.

KudzuCarl said...

If Kyle is really having brake problems, Ambrose may be able to take him on the restart. Here's hoping.

Anonymous said...

Caution.....only thing that makes the race interesting.

Steve L. said...

The way Busch re-starts races just gave him the win. He'll jump out ahead of Ambrose and be gone.

Don said...

From my point of view this is the most interesting race we've had all year. But I'm a road course fan.

Anonymous said...

Tired of these fuel races.

OSBORNK said...

KyBu is the best at restarts of anyone on the track. He has the edge if he has the gas.

Don said...

I don't believe that Ambrose can get him on the start. Kyle's got a better engine. The only way to get past him would be to worry him for 5 to 10 and wait for a mistake.

Ambrose had his chance, he wasn't ready or able. If we only have 1 or 2 laps I don't see that Kyle will lose unless he runs out of gas.

OSBORNK said...

They should have gone back to the larger fuel tanks when they added corn squeezens to real gas.

Don said...

Agreed. They knew that ethanol got worse mileage.

Steve L. said...

This will be wild!!

Hey Saltsberg, dont you get the Whoopie Goldberg commo w/ the "sprits"? EW

AMBROSE GETS IT!!!!!! 5TH FIRST TIME WINNER FINALLY

KudzuCarl said...

Marcos Ambrose!

Sally said...

He earned that one! Another great drive by Kez. Fun race.

Don said...

That was much better racing than I had anticipated. I'm very pleased.

Anonymous said...

are those considered safer barriers?

Sally said...

Wow. Some awful hits at the end there. Hope everyone is OK.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Last lap is always the toughest.

Buschseries61 said...

Uhhhh...I..I...have no words.

OSBORNK said...

I don't normally enjoy watching road courses but this one was different.

Sally said...

Pet peeve....why do they always 'document' things? can't the just have told us? drives me nuts.

Anonymous said...

Anyone want to bet that the blue guardrail on the outside exit of Turn 1 gets moved before Nascar returns to the Glen? This is the second time that I can recall that there's been a nasty accident there where the cars richochet of the left side of the track.

Steve L. said...

KB sounds like he's about to cry...

Bad wreck, hope all is okay.

Michael Stoffel said...

A KyBu fan trying to follow this at work....congratulations to Marcos!
How did the size of the crowd look?

Sally said...

SAFER barriers at least on the high speed turns would be a good idea.

r said...

One of these days Ragan will LEARN NOT to squeeze/pinch off his competition....HE is responsible for what happened with Rooty.....Roush owes Mikey a car, I would think...

Steve L. said...

What crowd? There was a few fans but I'll say one thing, they were vocal!

Rainy2228 said...

r=Rainy2228...DUH......Congrats to the Flyin Aussie!!!!!sell some screwdrivers!!!!!!

Daly Planet Editor said...

That was just huge.

Sally said...

Junior manages a 14th. Should give him some breathing room from Hamlin and Stewart.

saltsburgtrojanfan said...

I don't know why Jerry Punch is not interviewing the winner, ESPN is doing a disservice to fans by not putting him in VL to interview the winner.

Sally said...

And it wasn't Reagan's fault. someone else should have backed off.

Steve L. said...

Since I've had 4 back surgeries, I feel for Brad. He looked like he was in a LOT of back pain! This may stay with him for life.

Anonymous said...

Glad everyone ok

Sally said...

Not a good day to be named David driving a race car.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Weird. Sour taste in my mouth right now despite a solid race.

Don't really know what it is.

Rainy2228 said...

BACKED OFF?????..On the Last Lap????...Ragan came IN on Boris....watch the video....Ragan was in the middle of the track coming off the turn, Boris barely over the outside line...and ragan MOVED OVER....CAUSING the contact....Biffle needs to OPEN his BUGEYES before confronting Boris....and Sally needs glasses..JMO

Daly Planet Editor said...

SBTF,

The pit reporter who does the winner inverview is normally the reporter who had that driver assigned to them that day.

Sally said...

Hmmm. Questions about finishing order. If we had seen the field cross the line, we might have an opinion.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Rainy,

Wish we saw better replay. Never really made it clear from the rear angle what happened.

I would like more info as well.

OSBORNK said...

Sally. The finish line doesn't matter with the yellow. It's where they were when the yellow came out.

Sally said...

So, when exactly did it come out? I think that's what the crew chief's want to know.

Buschseries61 said...

I really hope the lawn-mower blade splitter is removed from the redesigned car.

The small portion of ESPN coverage I saw was great. The camerawork on the last lap could have been better. Also have to say I don't miss the infield. I'll watch the whole thing tonight.

Dave Burns hanging out by the NASCAR hauler is pretty cool. Wait...WTF did he just say?

Sally said...

Watching the replay, Boris' tires were on the paint. If it had been a Cup regulsr, would it just be a matter of hard racing to the flag?

Anonymous said...

I set my Dish network DVR to tape all the "SportCenters" from 10am to 2pm this morning before work. Did ESPN/Dish change the program names before the race? I hope it taped. I wish you could set it for XX amount of time.

OSBORNK said...

Anon. You're in good shape. Dish kept the Sportcenters listed all day.

CaseMoney said...

Seems like everybody , drivers, commentators, are piling on Boris. I don't see how Boris did anything wrong.

Loved DJ's huge grin after Boris' very.. candid comments :)

Sally said...

I'll be interested to watch NN and Hub tonight to hear the latest scuttlebutt.

saltsburgtrojanfan said...

Did the pit reporters have assigned drivers back in the 80s & 90s
