Live Blogging Sprint Cup Series From Kansas (ESPN - 1PM ET)
If the Saturday Nationwide Series race was any indication, this could be the best race of the year. With a lot on the line, the Sprint Cup Series races at Kansas up against the afternoon NFL games on TV once again.
Nicole Briscoe will open the telecast with Rusty Wallace and Brad Daugherty from the Infield Pit Studio. The choice is to tell the story of the race or concentrate on the Chase. It should be interesting to see what topics are selected to discuss.
Allen Bestwick will call the race with Dale Jarrett and Andy Petree alongside. This trio is having a good Chase, with Jarrett fading into the background. Petree is much more opinionated and often the telecast finds Jarrett agreeing with his points over and over again.
Dr. Jerry Punch, Jamie Little, Vince Welch and Dave Burns will be on pit road. These four will probably being saying the words "fuel mileage" a lot today. Tim Brewer will be in the Tech Garage.
ESPN made a wholesale change in the Saturday race. The network focused on the Nationwide Series regulars and did not interview big names like Carl Edwards and Danica Patrick until the end of the pre-race show. The actual telecast was also different.
The coverage looked like a Camping World Truck Series race on SPEED for the first half of the event. Cameras stayed wide, aerial shots were uses and the director chased the best racing on the track instead of staying with the leaders.
In the second half of the race, the "Hyper-tight" coverage returned and immediately missed a key incident on the track. While the finish line coverage was outstanding, ESPN still cannot resist continually zooming-in on one or two cars at a time. It's a curse.
The weather is great, the stories are good and ESPN has all the bells and whistles to make this an outstanding telecast. Media types have picked Carl Edwards as the car to beat.

«Oldest ‹Older 201 – 277 of 277Is it time for me to say "the cars should look more like cars" yet?
Sun outages will affect both cable systems and home dish users this time of year.
Outages are caused by solar interference and the signal will return after a few minutes.
You do not have to reboot or do anything about it.
And I'm back now.
Neil DeGrasse-Tyson, the astronomer, said the other day that he did not care what anyone said, the sun is white and not yellow because if it were yellow all snow would look like it does near a fire hydrant.
That is just about all I know about the sun today. :)
That's one way to force tv to recognize you.
Thank goodness it's not going to be a fuel mileage finish!
Our Time Warner service had severe pixelization for 3-4 minutes. All set now
Look! Austin Dillon also found a way on tv!
Bill, no offense, but really as a long time Gordon fan, I do seriously get tired of everyone blaming all the ills of the sport on Rick Hendrick.
I got mine right at the restart back. I've listened to a majority of this race on 95.1 WZZO (which broadcasts MRN for Cup races only). They did a pretty good job
Gina: It's insane the flack Gordon still gets. People still calling him gay and stuff. It really pisses me off.
Radio classic: "In case anyone wondered why there's a 5th Richard Childress car out there, there ya go." - Kyle Busch
Sally, I was thinking the same thing. A fuel mileage ending on top of an already boring race would have been murder.
I have switched over to the pats/jets game though since the tv coverage is boring the bejabbers out of me.
This non stop is as much a joke as this race telecast is.
Adam, I did a lot of work with Jeff when he was running the Busch Series for Ford.
He always got the prettiest girl in the place. Had that little boy charm and the race driver background.
We had a lot of names for him that had nothing to do with being gay! LOL.
I got so bored I went to the grocery store. I could tell the radio folks are as bored as the rest of us. It's only three miles to the store and both going to the store and coming back they went to the points as they are racing now crap.
#24 team taking themselves out of another championship. At least ESPN covered that well.
I agree, Adam. Of course, that restart just totally screwed everything up for the day.
Jeff may be a lot of things, but one thing he's not, and that's gay. And he likes tall women. I met Jeff and Brookie (remember her?), and she was taller than him as well. Or she was wearing some serious high heels.
I blame Stewart, and Alan Gustafson. Stewart made the move to do that.
Busch, yeah, of course they cover the part I'd rather NOT see.
Oh well, I've been disappointed at the end of the season for the last 10 years - why should 2011 be any different?
Thank god for a caution. Jeff get some tires on it.
...
It would be hard to do this telecast any worse.
Tight shots, chit chat that doesn't amount to much.
DEBRIS CAUTION: postit note on the track.
Dear ESPN: Thank you for showing that debris and making my week a lot easier.
My impression from the comments on the social side of Mr Gordon: Just think what might have been if, when Jeff was young, we had had TMZ.
Dear Buffalo Wild Wings,
Thanks for pressing the debris button.
>:-)
JD, LOL and Jeff has gotten better looking as he's grown up!
I think it was Stewart who said Ingrid was one smokin hot wife!
lol KoHoSo!
ESPN did their job and found the debris.
So how hard will Krashemallski race against Denny? Let the stupidity begin!
I have a 1:64 size car with tony's # on it that I use a hammer on every time he messes with Jeff.
It makes me feels better!
In the back of my mind I was thinking Jeff Gordon would leave Nascar this season and take over Regis place in the Regis and Kelly show.
The ON switch has been activated.
Lets not go there GinaV24. I have 1/24 scale of Johnson. Lets just say its unsanitary
Well, given what appears to be about to happen I am glad the season finale of "Breaking Bad" is on tonight.
15 Laps to go.
A la JG/Ray Evernham, is it me or does it seem JJ/Chad Knaus spend 26 races testing to race better in 10 races?
No way it's going green till the end, Oh no way,
Notice that Andy and DJ aren't mentioning the lap times to understand which cars are fast and which of the leaders aren't. They never do it. If Larry Mac was in the booth, you'd know
LOL, jimm57. My brother cheers for the 48, so I have to be nice when we talk -- otherwise believe me, there'd be a lot of messed up 48 diecast.
Hope Jeff's motor stays together, I sure don't want that to be the yellow flag,, this thing might go green till the end...
yes, it frustrates the heck of me that every year since the chase was implemented that the 24 team seems to fall off the cliff and find a way NOT to run well.
well no reason to watch the 48 take the flag. I'll go cry in my beer now.
If a friend of mine was an NFL fan and I talked him into watching this race, telling him how neat Nascar is, I am afraid I would be laughed out of the house and he would go back to the NFL.
Barring an act of god, Voldemort and Weasley have this won while the 24 is now smoking.
I can't stand it. I am going to start cooking and put football on.
It ia all to much to bear. Boring race with a bad end.
The Horror. The Horror.
;)
DAMN IT
BOOM! There goes Jeff!
Wow. That was big. Don't suppose that JJ's could go right now, do you?
Dash for the cash. Tony time?
Dumb question Vince Welch. I'd love more of what than when
Come on Vince, how weak was that?
ha, well, maybe that's a little bit of karma there since Stewart is in his pit box sideways!
Hollywood win
lol that was great!
This should be crazy.
here's hoping that someone else can take the restart from Weasley.
and yes, that was a really stupid question from Welch.
Here we go,
Well, I could not leave. Maybe there is yet a chance to stop this outrage.
May as well be like Butch and Sundance and just try to make a run for it. Never know. Could work
I thought they would of gone to Tim B. to explain green white checker.
Ahhhh the 48 you love to hate,
Now I AM leaving. I CANNOT look at Voldemort's smirk.
See y'all
AB had a Martysim at the finish
Wow! They showed the finish. Wasn't crazy about the finish, but they showed it.
IMPOUND THAT 48! Gotsa be illegal!
Well, crap. See ya next week!
Nice shot of the finish
Ending right on time for TV. JJ is back and it should be interesting.
well, i expected a little more than that from Kahne, but then again, he'll be a "teammate" next year, so he probably decided to play nice.
Glad I did my yard work, if I had wasted the entire day watching that poor excuse for a race, I'd be even more disappointed than I am.
Well, I wonder how big a boost this will give for interest in the chase?
Jamie Little to Chad Knaus after the race..."are you excited about this win?" They should take the mic away from her when the checkered flag drops.
Keselowski has another good finish. This team is a real surprise. Good for the Michigan boy!
Seems to me that during the side-by-side 2nd half, the commercials were louder than during the first half.
And 2 commercials, one for DirecTV and another I don't remember, were in full 5.1 surround sound. Never heard that before!
They muted Jamie's mic! LOL
48 team a little disfunctional in victory lane? Slammin? Really?
Too bad they got the audio back. MORE GATORADE!
Every time Jamie does an interview, I cringe.
Make sure you leave us a comment on the race wrap post before you go.
Some interesting TV presented today and we had a very good group talking about it.
Thank you for hanging with us today.
The service outage and/or pixellation at 4:28 was most likely due to the Draconid Meteor Shower http://spaceweather.com/ It affected several channels for me, not just ESPN. Yesterday it occured at 4:11pm EDT. Those kind of events get later each day. Meteor showers normally last 2 to 3 days.
