Live Blogging Camping World Trucks in Texas (SPEED - 7:30PM ET)

Austin Dillon said goodbye to the truck series today with a press conference announcing he would be running the #3 Chevy in the Nationwide Series next season. That certainly leaves the stage wide-open next year for a new young driver to emerge.

Tonight, Krista Voda starts things off with The Set-up at 7:30PM. Rick Allen, Phil Parsons and an owner in the news these days named Michael Waltrip will call the race. Ray Dunlap and Hermie Sadler are the pit road reporters.

SPEED has been excellent this season, but had a rough outing with the trucks in Martinsville. It looked a lot like FOX with ill-timed tight shots and lots of leader coverage. It should be interesting to see how things are framed tonight on the big Texas track.

This post will serve to host your TV-related comments on the coverage of the Camping World Series Trucks from the Texas Motor Speedway. To add your opinion, just click the comments button below. Thanks for stopping by.

Nice to see Jim Smith get honored.

Always wondered why Jim Smith quit. Nice interview.

That anthem is contender for worst of the season.

COMMAND WAS WIN-ING

Buschseries61 said...

WHY IS EVERYONE SCREAMING TONIGHT?!?

The National Anthem, the command, just please no boogity boogity.

Daly Planet Editor said...

John, not that I know about in advance.

Anonymous said...

What is the deal with the blazers all around on Speed. New rule?

Daly Planet Editor said...

New boss in the house, David Hill. Remember him from NASCAR on FOX?

Sally said...

I'm not expecting much from this race tonight...big, wide track, probably start lapping trucks at lap 20. May be hard to stay awake!

Jimm57 said...

Full screen replays. C'mon guys! Please show that stuff side by side so we can still see live racing. Pretty please??

Roadgeek Adam said...

WOW PAYBACK FAIL

Buschseries61 said...

And this is why Cup drivers are bad.

Sally said...

That was as cheap a shot as I've seen in a long time...even for Kyle.

Jimm57 said...

a little early to be gettin snotty

Roland said...

A perfect example of why Cup drivers should not be in the Truck or Nationwide series.

Sally said...

If they don't park him...and maybe for the entire weekend, Nascar has NO balls at all.

RWar24 said...

When will Nascar park Cry baby Busch for a while.. Unreal

Daly Planet Editor said...

That was awful for the sport.

Sally said...

I wonder what sort of 'conversation' Kevin Harvick will have with KyBu.

Roadgeek Adam said...

Trip to the Oval Office go

Sally said...

That was so incredibly low class...even for a Busch brother...

Ann_Ominous said...

Kyle Bush should be parked for the entire weekend! He deliberately wrecked a championship contender under caution!

Jimm57 said...

Gotta give speed Kudos for waiting so long for the first commercial break. I was waiting for it and then we had the wreck.

Buschseries61 said...

He should be parked for the weekend and Homestead Truck race.

Robby Gordon's Montreal shenanigans resulted in a weekend suspension a few years ago. PJ Jones had to drive for Robby at Pocono. But that isn't as bad as Busch deliberately trying to kill Hornaday tonight.

Roland said...

I hope they do something big to him. Like a suspension. Most of the time NASCAR just looks the other way with Rowdy.

ChrisK said...

That new Aaron's commercial with the blonde singer -- last week it had a quick shot of MW and Reutimann. This week it just has MW.

Roadgeek Adam said...

I can't see an entire weekend parking. Why? Chase contender. For ratings sake it'd never be allowed.

Anonymous said...

Wow! Never heard Phil be so adamant about something being so wrong, but I have to totally agree!

Buschseries61 said...

They've done it before Adam. Kyle Busch should be no different than Robby Gordon or Kevin Harvick.

Roadgeek Adam said...

Robby and Harvick's were before the chase...

glenc1 said...

He'd not really a contender in Cup after last week. Fat Lady is taking a deep breath to start her song. I'd park him the weekend, at least.

Wonder if Harvick will pull an RC? Hand his watch to Delana and....

Buschseries61 said...

@ Anon - I was also happily surprised to see Phil so outspoken about the issue.

Roland said...

In 2002, Harvick wrecked a dude intentionally at Martinsville in a truck race. He was parked from the Cup race the next day. Yeah.

Ann_Ominous said...

Big Bro Kurt Busch got parked during the chase for off track antics of speeding and mouthin' off to Sherriff Joe. Parking a chaser has been done before, just by an owner.

Buschseries61 said...

Who cares if he is in the chase or not Adam? The Chase does not put him and his wreckless actions on a pedestal above the others.

jerry said...

I could do without twitter commentary. Just use it for breaking news please.

Buschseries61 said...

What an arrogant interview!

jerry said...

It was Ron Hornaday, he is one fo the dirtiest in the bussiness. It's that karma coming back around for Ronnie.

Sally said...

You expected anything different from him? His theme song must be 'When Will I Be Loved?'. Not anytime soon based on tonight!

Ann_Ominous said...

What an arrogant bleep! Blames it on Ron for not letting him have the position.

Anonymous said...

Be nice to se Kyle with a black eye tomorow. Ron's a big boy...wouldn't wanna tangle.

Buschseries61 said...

Of the start and parks, #0 Bell, #38 Garvey, & #87 Jones have called it a night so far.

Roadgeek Adam said...

I damn well agree with DeLana, a rarity in itself. If NASCAR doesn't park him on Sunday, then they're coming up short.

(Now just because I expect they won't, doesn't mean I agree they shouldn't.)

ChrisK said...

Twitter quotes don't belong on the TV coverage, particularly since they are selecting them for their own agenda.

Anonymous said...

They should pull Kyle from the car Sunday and put Ron in it!

RWar24 said...

If Nascar doesn't do anything major to Ky. Busch, then they have lost what little integrity they have left.

Buschseries61 said...

Is the twitter stuff a FOX experiment?

Anonymous said...

The drivers that pick and chose what truck races they Want to race should always give space to the ones racing full time truck for points. These guys are trying to make a living while Kyle is mainly there for fun. Kyle proves over and over what kind of person he is. LS

ChrisK said...

I have to agree with this tweet from Jim Utter.

PLEASE don't start with the "this stuff is uncalled for in this sport." It has been encouraged for over two seasons.

Buschseries61 said...

It would be nice if SPEED put the intervals up on the ticker by now.

Sally said...

I guess Mr. Utter forgets that many fans were just as upset when Carl put Kez onto his roof at Atlanta? At tracks with this sort of speed, it is too dangerous to have a temper tantrum like that! Not a problem at martinsville...but not here.

ChrisK said...

Another good tweet from Denny Hamlin.

ok my 1 voice of reason during this time of chaos.. what just happened is not much different then what happened last week 20 times..

Anonymous said...

Parking Kyle Sunday would be great for ratings.

Anonymous said...

ChrisK, that's probably true... but Nascar has also had limitations....guys running for championships should be left alone when possible...they have told the drivers things like that in driver's meetings.

Sally said...

Again...the 100 mph diffference at the respective tracks makes it an entirely different thing.

Jimm57 said...

Lets not forget that Hornaday got into Kyle first, and then again.

just sayin'

Daly Planet Editor said...

Wonder if "have at it boys" will be toast for 2012?

ChrisK said...

I wonder what Jimmy Spencer will have to say about that incident.

Jimm57 said...

and racing chase contenders differently is not racin

Respectivly submitted

Anonymous said...

so Sally....was it different when Kez put Carl in the fence (and spectators) at 'dega? Just saying...I like them both, but this is racing.

Jimm57 said...

Respectfully Submitted

ChrisK said...

SPEED is loving this. How many times will they run the replays?

Roland said...

I am enjoying the twitter interaction tonight. Nice change of pace. Very 21st century-ish. Like it!

Daly Planet Editor said...

Man, we got tons of drivers from Jeff Gordon to Danica Patrick talking about the truck race tonight on Twitter.

Lots of opinions all over the place!

P said...

Yeah, I could do without the tweets. They're obviously chosen to oppose Kyle. I disagree with what he did, but on a site as big as Twitter there has to be some pro-Busch comments.

Buschseries61 said...

Jimm, he was out of control because Kyle did not give him room to get around the #07. The truck was loose and out of control at over 130 mph, so the truck went up the track and into the #18. Nothing was intentional until Busch shoved the #33 down the backstretch, through turn three and right hooked the #33 so hard into the wall the rear wheels lifted off the ground.

P-almetto said...

Oops, that last one was mine.

glenc1 said...

Jimm57, I get what you're saying...but this is what *Nascar* has told them. I was slightly surprised at how Jimmie raced Tony last week. Shows this is in their minds.

RichyJ said...

What Kyle did was was no worse than Edwards flipping kesolowski at Atlanta.
Should have no place in the sport but Nascar seems to encourage it with no meaningful penalties

Daly Planet Editor said...

This is a pretty strong statement from a well respected motorsports writer.

Terry Blount (ESPN) "KyBu's action tonight is one of the most blantantly dangerous acts...ever seen on a race track. NASCAR must take a stand."

Jimm57 said...

Im not defending Kyle, and what he did to Hornaday was definitly wrong. Not a safe move at all. It was wrong to take out a championship contender. I like Hornaday - he's a great guy and good racer, Harvick and the goil in the fire suit, not so much.

Buschseries61 said...

#07 Chapman & #74 Harmon parked, leaving just the #93 on track. The #93 should be parking around halfway.

Sally said...

Wow. Blount doesn't usually tweak Nascar's nose like that.

Roland said...

In the end though, this is good for the series. It got people talking about it that otherwise wouldnt.

Charlie said...

Been watching since the top of the hour and I don't believe I have seen a camera shot with just one truck in a shot.
The zoom on these cameras must not have the Espn approval.

Sophia said...

I totally agree w Blount & just told him so.

I'm still sick over the Indycar mess where Wheldon was killed. That was just crowded track,& too many inexperienced open wheel drivers, high speeds, OW cars touching/too close; set up for a mess. We got a tragedy.

Yes, NASCAR is safer but to let Kyle B go with that stunt in lieu of what happened in Vegas? Outraged.

Plus Kyle's arrogant/who care's demeanor during interview annoyed and did not help his case.

Thankfully, Ron is ok.

But I'm tired of that carpetbagger Kyle racing for 'fun' and ruining trucks of those who do it for a living. Just not right.

Anonymous said...

Just a thought....

I guess Kyle lost his dam* mind, lol. Where's Trace Atkins when you need him. Those promos have been making me laugh.

Palmetto said...

Lap 77 - did they have the graphics up to go to commercial, and then take them down to continue coverage of the lead change? Nice.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Man, Jim Utter from thatsracing.com in response:

"You encourage drivers to "have at it" with no rules to go by, this is what you get. Don't cry when you don't like the results."

ChrisK said...

Anybody think that Waltrip and Parsons never deliberately ran into somebody in their careers? Getting kind of tired of their "outrage" about this incident.

jerry said...

Never been a fan of Allen and the other clowns in the booth. But for the first time I gotta mute them. They are beyond horrible tonight, trying to force their opinion on me like politicians.

glenc1 said...

They haven't 'let him go'. They have said they'll look at it post race.

Roland, I had that same thought. Controversies are always good for the sport & ratings.

Buschseries61 said...

'Boys have at it' implies the drivers have intellect. Utter is grasping thin air.

Anonymous said...

analysts are free to express their own opinions, that's why they're there. Saying what they saw, what they believe. If you don't agree, that's fine, I don't hear them 'forcing' anyone to believe. I don't think they're told what that should be unless it comes to NASCAR as a whole; where they're forced to suck up. No issues with the booth for me.

I have had some second thoughts about Vickers last week. Not all his fault.

Anonymous said...

"Anybody think that Waltrip and Parsons never deliberately ran into somebody in their careers? Getting kind of tired of their "outrage" about this incident."

I can't say that I recall either of them turning someone head on into a wall at 130 mph as the caution is out no.

Daly Planet Editor said...

To me, it's like marketing meets reality. All fun and games until someone gets hurt.

Sally said...

No, Utter forgot that there are drivers like Kyle and Carl that apparently don't care if they endanger the well being of other drivers by retaliating at tracks with this kind of speed.

Buschseries61 said...

Wreck on Truckbuddy

Roland said...

I dont much care for anything Jim Utter has to say.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Utter is working his way to curmudgeon status. Did I spell that right?

Charlie said...

The kyb deal happened on lap 13 and what lap are we on now. The Tv screen just says 44 to go. If the booth references laps they should show the laps completed somewhere on the screen.

Something to think about:

How many people are running this one all the way at their own cost these days?

Mortgages, junk chassis rebuilds, you name it - just on the lowest series. Nevermind NW. Getting to Cup - just as hard!

It's monetized short/local track racing with all the expenses and none of the benefits. Look at your own commentary, JD, or the Insiders, about this.

Much like a Ponzi scheme, you'll always get someone to do your bidding...but this is shameful. Tires are horrifically expensive. Inspection isn't better. To hire someone on your crew, pay at least $300/yr.

This is racing? My arse. This is moneymaking.

Speed's done a pretty solid job of coverage so far - wish they'd maybe throw the cameras on the backmarkers and give them a chance to offer TV time to small-business-sponsors.

I dunno about 2012 though. I'm tired of watching good people get ruined.

Buschseries61 said...

Daly Planet Editor said...

Anon 10:03PM,

SPEED is the only TV network remotely connected with reality.

ESPN chooses a storyline involving a "star" and then exploits it during a race. Nothing about the sport comes first, it's just ESPN's own agenda.

FOX is just as bad. All about the stars and ignoring those not in the spotlight at that moment. DW is all about DW.

TNT comes and goes helping themselves with show promo's for TNT and Turner series. They are like Chinese food, nice for a minute and then gone.

Not a week goes by that I don't get a question from a team about why TV is not fair to the whole field. The answer is they don't have to be.

Roadgeek Adam said...

Yeah vomit please. Harvick wins again.

Daly Planet Editor said...

This should be a winner interview to remember.

Buschseries61 said...

Austin Dillon 2011 Truck Champion.

Jimm57 said...

They showed the whole field crossing the line. Not all that bad a broadcast and a pretty decent race.

Will we get fireworks from Kevin? I think he has too much to lose on Sunday to settle the score w/Kyle Sunday

Charlie said...

I enjoyed the race. It kept my attention. Tv work was good.

Buschseries61 said...

Harvick didn't give SPEED what they wanted.

Sally said...

Sounds like Kyle might have another 'close encounter' at Homestead if Kevin has his way. Could get interesting.

Roland said...

Ahh, little dissapointed in Harv's interview. But then again he did have 100 laps to choose his words wisely.

This is not over. Its going to culminate one day and its not going to be pretty.

Sophia said...

SPEED

one gripe.

that loud sound effect WHOMP WHOMP WHOMP in middle of Harvick's interview going in and out of video replay? You can turn down that stupid sound effect about 90% please. It came off rude in middle of interview, too.

I don't even have surround sound or anything on. It would've blown the kitty cats out of the room.

I missed last few laps w important ph call but will take everybody at their word the cam work was good.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Busch, he did not and Ray was digging hard for it.

Anonymous said...

what do you think jd, kb done racing for the weekend?

oldnewenglander said...

Wrecking someone intentionally under green is one thing. This was different even from that.

Daly Planet Editor said...

No. NASCAR usually would not make a KBM truck incident into a JGR team issue.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Told Kyle is in the NASCAR hauler. Keeping this open if penalties or sanctions are announced.

Buschseries61 said...

Watching Speed Center, TNT has to be pissed Danica has 0 races scheduled in their Summer Six Pack.

Anonymous said...

Anon :03 @ JD - I know. I wholeheartedly agree. Why Nascar signs contracts for so long with what have been flagging networks with absurd coverage isn't beyond me, it just seems silly.

Reason 1: Exposure. Kinda hits TNT in their kick, but I expect they negotiated some VERY favorable terms, and I'm also guessing they had some less than stellar results far as ad-revenue.

Reason 2: Kickbacks. Don't get a paycheck unless you're selling, *selling*, SELLING! - it's a privately owned corporation outsourcing everything and demanding gigantic revenues.

Whether drivers, networks, contracted wage-slaves running cameras - if you want to cover Nascar *now* - you pay the piper.

Which is okay with me from a business standpoint. Hey, if you can, and if you're that ruthless...it's a private corp. and no one can stop you.

Speed got NW quals and particularly the Truck coverage because France (or his employees) totally devalued it years ago when the contract was signed.

As it turns out, there's still some racing involved in these two.

Watching Cup racing is - at best - a cheap excuse to say you're doing something while unintentionally becoming an alcoholic most of the time.

The haves have, the have-nots get to spend a day in obscurity for the rest of us. May as well drink unless you like someone up front. Maybe get one of those Leaf Cyclone things and drag it around the yard by hand. I dunno.

Kudos to Speed. Aside from the crappy, cheap-arse programming they've taken to as of late, they are solid on motorsports coverage, even if you gotta maybe use a DVR.

For the rest, including Nascar, I think maybe I'll go try to recover data from a dead hard drive, mop a floor, or scrub the driveway with kerosene for something to do on my weekends.

Their coverage isn't worth watching, they meddle too much, and it's lost the "racing" type thing the original France had.

Good for them and their millions. Most of us continue to be bored, insulted, and disagree.

Just my opinion. Tail end of a dying series, this Truck racing.

Daly Planet Editor said...

3 min meeting with NASCAR officials and KB. No comment from KB as he left. NASCAR says KB and JGR brass meeting in the AM when Mike Helton is present.

So, stay tuned!

Thanks again for stopping by folks! Back tomorrow for the Nationwide Series telecast.

Anonymous said...

Rhetorical, but lucid question for you, JD: Why is it that Nascar has been around since - what - 1949? - and offers a gigantic Hall of Fame - but will not provide full archival copies of races, despite having the same?

Somethin' to think about. Beats heck out of me aside from the money stuffs. :)

Daly Planet Editor said...

Anon, NASCAR did a TV deal with multiple networks but signed an exclusive online deal for all audio and video with Turner Sports.

Since that time, they are unable to offer online access to anything but DVD's for sale.

The deal still has years to run, so the only real NASCAR footage is what fans and other sources upload to YouTube.

In addition, since SPEED is not owned by NASCAR, that network has its own agenda and currently that does not include any type of new NASCAR themed programming for 2012.

With a true NASCAR TV network or online access, that big NASCAR Media Group building in Charlotte is just one hard drive plugged into nothing.
