Live Blogging Sprint Cup Series From Phoenix (ESPN 2PM ET)

It was a rough Saturday for ESPN in Phoenix. College football ran 35 minutes longer than scheduled, covering the entire Nationwide Series pre-race show. As this was the next to last race, you would think ESPN would have some plans in place, but nothing happened. ESPN2 joined shortly before the National Anthem and the race was on.

After Sam Hornish won, ESPN2 switched immediately to a college football game without any interviews, including the winner. Announcer Marty Reid told viewers that the entire post-race would be done on ESPNEWS. Eventually, the Hornish interview and one other was shown. It was not a stellar day for the only NNS TV partner.

Today, ESPN faces another challenge. It rained hard during the night and the weather forecast continues to call for an 80% chance of rain through 4PM. PIR has lights, so it could be a very long day on the air. There are no live program conflicts on ESPN tonight, so the race window can continue until NASCAR postpones until Monday.

Nicole Briscoe lost her pre-race show yesterday, but hosts an hour today with Rusty Wallace and Brad Daugherty. Rusty's son Steven had quite a moment in the NNS race on Saturday. It should be interesting to see if that race is recapped.

Allen Bestwick is once again teamed with Dale Jarrett and Andy Petree. The single-groove track widened out in the Nationwide Series race to allow for passing and strategy. After the rain Saturday night, the newly-repaved track should be the topic of conversation.

Jamie Little, Dr. Jerry Punch, Dave Burns and Vince Welch are on pit road. Tim Brewer is in the Tech Garage. Little had a rough outing Saturday, including a memorable interview with Jason Leffler. Punch has changed gears and tries to work his own agenda into interviews. Joe Gibbs and Elliott Sadler come to mind.

ESPN's producer and director made a decision to shrink the PIR Nationwide Series pictures sent to fans to a single car at a time. If there were two cars in the picture, it was tolerated. ESPN missed every incident but one and used replays to explain the happenings on the track.

If this approach is taken to the longer Cup race today, it may simply prove to be a reason for sports fans to switch to NFL games. Instead of selling the racing action, ESPN has followed the "storytelling" script where announcers talk overtop of the action as if they are watching a movie. It's very strange.

The new dogleg on the backstretch has given drivers the option of cutting low and then sliding up in front of those still on the track. This angle will have to be covered on every lap and it will be tough to do. Even getting the right replay angles recorded will be a challenge.

Once again ESPN has to cover the Chase, the race and Kyle Busch. In his first race back, Busch is racing without the M&M's sponsorship. The Chase now features only two participants and the race is absolutely anyone's to take.

Throw in the rain delays and this is going to be a very interesting race telecast. This post will serve to host your comments on the ESPN coverage from PIR today. To add your TV-related opinion, just click the comments button. Thanks for stopping by.

Caution. I've said it before, but it makes no sense to have the commercial in such a large box and the race in such a small box. The idea is that we continue to watch the race and listen to the commercial. Why won't they acknowledge the way the feature is actually used and adjust the box sizes accordingly?

With the way the Hendrick cars have been running, is Chad still the 'wonderboy' of the garage, of is he losing it with other teams catching up?

Tony looks/sounds completely annoyed with these interviews.

Roland said...

@Diane They switched pit crews with David Ragan's team. Ragan got wrecked early in the race. Allmendinger's team dropped a lug nut a couple of stops ago so they swapped them out.

What the heck was wrong with the track in its previous configuration?I thought the racing was just fine before.

and they actually pay these guys
to do this....

Cut away from the racing to show the leading. Awful.

Charlie said...

I switched to Football a second ago and the Lions and Bears are on.
There is no bar on the screen that tell me that If The Game Ended Now the Bears would win.
Get with it FOX - we need to know.

Steve O'Donnell from NASCAR says "We saw incident differently."

Meaning, Vickers and Kenseth can handle it on their own.

This should make for an interesting final payback.

Kenseth back on track.

Diane, the regular 43 pit crew had a problem with a lug nut on a pit stop, so they pulled a Knaus and switched out the pit crew.

Sally and JD, yes, I think karma, the engine shop or payback just being a you know what, is coming to visit KyBu.

Revenge of the green M&M's maybe?

Anonymous said...

It seems Jimmy Johnson would do anything to win.

diane said...

Wow, I didn't like it when they did the Johnson/Gordon crew swap and this one seems way over the line, not even the same team.

Who in there right mind is going to hire Vickers next year?

Vicky D said...

Anon at 5:29 - I think BV would say anything to justify taking another racer out of a race!

Jimm57 said...

The dinger replay a sec ago...

So they don't even put a locator key saying its a replay?

Oy.

PammH said...

I would say after this yr, Vickers Cup career is toast.

Jimm57 said...

Vickers has nothing to lose as far as cars go w/ Red Bull.

NMaybe Vickers has intrests in other Red Bull stuff? Not Nascar?

KudzuCarl...large box makes sense if you're one of the advertisers...and maybe you wouldn't have agreed to it otherwise.

RWar24 said...

Please ESPN, replace Jaime Little on these broadcast. Horrendous!

Charlie said...

Just think one more race and 3 more seasons of this kind of coverage.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Not even a lap between Nonstop breaks.

Charlie said...

So why do they go to the infield studio under green.
I haven't figured that one out yet.

Jimm57 said...

Gee Thanks Charlie.

Note to self, get more beer

Theodore said...

Did the good racing stop happening, or did ESPN stop showing it? They just can't seem to put together a complete race - things start out well but drops off as the race progresses. Fade to blah.

Zetona said...

As Rusty would say, that was a classic case of focus on the drivers' stories missing the racing on the track.

NascarNut said...

Almost looking forward to the off season to see if the TV guys can review this season and make changes to how they show the race. Or am I dreaming? LOL The K&N race last night on Speed was awesome.

jerry said...

Kurt Busch was our points leader?

NascarNut said...

We were listening to the race on the radio on the way home from a birthday party and when we got home and turned the TV on it was like a different race compared to the radio broadcast. Radio much more exciting to listen to.

Anonymous said...

Pardn, but dd she say "Kurt Busch still stuck in the $hit box?

sbaker17 said...

Quick.
Someone send Dr. Punch down to Jamie Little. I think she just passed out

NascarNut said...

Sounded like she said that. LOL

GinaV24 said...

Anon - well whatever may have been wrong with this track, this sure isn't an improvement.

jerry said...

Reuttiman was top ten all day?

NascarNut said...

I just wish the camera guys could find the ZOOM OUT button.

Jimm57 said...

Don't remember seeing the 00

GinaV24 said...

NascarNut - don't hold your breath. JD has been providing this blog for comments for a long time - apparently the TV people read it but in the immortal words of David Hill -- "tough".

If the tv partners don't care about making improvements, I would think that NASCAR would but I guess when they sold their soul with the "new" tv contracts, the didn't have lawyers smart enough to write language into the contracts saying they had rights to ask for modifications to coverage of the races. This season in particular has been a massive failure to launch.

jerry said...

I like this PHO much better than the old one. Lots of action, cant go by the four letter Gina.

Daly Planet Editor said...

They did good until halfway, then totally caved. No good racing, no wideshots for perspective.

Charlie said...

15 Laps to go.

NascarNut said...

Its like two totally different races are running between the radio and TV broadcasts.

GinaV24 said...

Charlie, thank goodness. My favorite has barely any brakes so they are just riding around to finish the race.

Made for a long day.

Jerry, the only way I can judge the racing is by what I see on TV -- if the 4 letters or even the 3 letter broadcasts don't show it to me, they can't expect me as a fan to think it's great.

Anonymous said...

It's like two different races in comparing the start and where we are now. Abject apathy and laziness abound.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Not only are the cars out of gas, so are the TV peeps.

w17scott said...

ESPN missing another good race ...to our great regret

Jimm57 said...

Yeah Kasey!

Anonymous said...

If the race ended now: I would be livid.

Anonymous said...

If everyone at ESPN worked as hard as Bob Dilner, they would hit the ball out of the park every weekend.

GinaV24 said...

I'm out of gas and patience with this, too, JD.

Charlie said...

How in the world does Espn think they are showing a race when they just follow a single car.

OSBORNK said...

A good race we never saw!

Daly Planet Editor said...

Nice little present for Red Bull on the way out the door.

Anonymous said...

ESPN is NOT broadcasting a NASCAR race. They are making a television show tangentially related to NASCAR racing. That is our problem.

Jimm57 said...

Wow!

Happy for Kasey

Sally said...

Wow. Highest finishing Hendrick car was 16th? Something's wrong in paradise! Good for Kasey and that team with an uncertain future!

ChrisK said...

We got to see all of five cars finish.

Anonymous said...

I'm sure it's a bittersweet win, but Red Bull has kept a lot of guys employed these last couple of years in a tough economy.

OSBORNK said...

Hendrick must be already working on next year. Kinda like when Football teams play the rookies or freshmen.

Anonymous said...

TiVo technology in the production truck is primarily responsible for breaking the show we see. No longer does the personnel need to be vigilant.

Sally said...

JD, do you think that part of the reason the races seem so anticlimactic is because of the multiple teams? Now it's not every driver for himself, but help 'the team effort'. It just isn't the same that way to me.

Anonymous said...

Nonstop commercials while celebrations are ongoing in victory lane. This is tivo'd.

ChrisK said...

Wow, my TV just got a lot bigger. No graphics cluttering it up!

Daly Planet Editor said...

Don't leave until you give us a Race Wrap comment please!

Next to last race of the season. Make it count!

Dennis said...

You know, if it wasn't for this blog, twitter and the live leaderboard, I'd have no clue what happened in today's race. As other have already said, I watched the whole telecast and don't feel like they showed me the race.

This is getting really old, really quick.

Sally said...

Does anyone else find 'Miss Sprint' nodding mindlessly in the background stupid? It used to be the winning driver at least kissed the trophy girl. Now whe's just...useless. Standing there, looking as if whe has a purpose.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Sally, the Chase is fake. It does not work and never has. It has impacted the sport from top to bottom.

If you were a sponsor of a non-Chaser today who did not lead the race, how would you feel?

ESPN has never figured out that the only way to cover the Chase is to just cover the race and then assign the points after.

Daly Planet Editor said...

I am sooooo going to miss Monica Palumbo next season.

ChrisK said...

So everybody thought this race would be a wildcard and it turns out it was a wash. No change in the point difference for the top two.

GinaV24 said...

Sally, yes, Miss Sprint Cup annoys me a lot more than the trophy girls of the Winston era did.

they are bobble head pointless people.

Daly Planet Editor said...

We getting a Vickers interview?

Sally said...

GinaV24...you nailed it! Bobbleheads! Perfect description. Annoying, and serving no purporse whatsoever.

Sally said...

JD, why in the world would they interview Vickers? He isn't in the script. He isn't in the 'chase'. He doesn't exsist for ESPN.

Sally said...

Boy, Carl is really piling up the Brownie points, isn't he? Making sure he congratulates the winner of each race.
