Live Blogging Sprint Cup Series From Homestead (ESPN - 2PM)

Here we go! The big finale is on the TV from Homestead. ESPN has 72 cameras, 16 in-cars and tons of announcers. The script is written, but the big question is will reality let it happen?

Nicole Briscoe has Rusty Wallace and Brad Daugherty in the Infield Pit Studio. Upstairs it's Allen Bestwick with Dale Jarrett and Andy Petree. On pit road is Dr. Jerry Punch, Jamie Little, Dave Burns and Vince Welch.

This is ESPN's biggest NASCAR telecast in years. The nation is watching two veteran drivers, teams and manufacturers end the season in a head-to-head battle.

We have discussed all year long the issues with "hyper-tight" coverage. The challenge today for ESPN is to maintain the integrity of the race telecast while keeping viewers updated on the Chase.

There is little more to say. This is the ultimate pressure cooker for a sports TV telecast.

This post will serve to host your comments on the final NASCAR race of 2011. To add your TV-related opinions, just click on the comments button below. Thanks you so much for taking the time once again to join us.

Anon, it was made pretty clear by the reporters at the track that it was a piece of Kurt Busch's transmission.

They only reason the pit reporter would not show it to use is if it came and went. Did not hang up in the grill.

Media said it was a big hole. Thought originally it took out the radiator too.

Sally said...

Things starting to get strung out...time for a caution?

Anonymous said...

it looks like espn has taken down the sports score crawl from the bottom of the screen.

Anonymous said...

ESPN does so well at this racing thing, they can report the news before it happens!

GinaV24 said...

Wow, full screen for football during green flag

Just perfect! what a bunch of idiots.

Buschseries61 said...

FULL SCREEN PROMOS!

Daly Planet Editor said...

Those promo's were soo ill-timed under green.

KudzuCarl said...

I hope that Jamie Little finds another job before next season.

RaceBuddy has been flaky for me so far, either hangs or crashes.

GinaV24 said...

JD, ill timed is a really polite way of saying what I was thinking.

I don't understand the Jimmy Johnson obsession.

So, 2 Rousch/Yates engines gone. Wonder if Carl is sweating yet?

No. 6 - Oil Pan Failure

So, 2 Roush-Yates engines gone. Let's see how ESPN chases this one.

Anonymous said...

The Roushers are having engine woes.

Anonymous said...

David Ragan just installed a window in his engine block.

red said...

hmmm. was telling the chef on the way home after lunch that the fords will either be very good or they'll blow up. looks as if "blow up" was the choice!

GinaV24 said...

Homestead always seems to be a Ford track for whatever reason, it will be interesting if an engine failure takes Edwards out, won't it?

Zetona said...

Well, when I said that the coverage was better than I expected, it really was. Now it's back to normal. Hopefully the restart will spice things up.

They will, of course, use this to generate some drama

Is it just me-J Little just grates on me.

GinaV24 said...

do you realize that this is one of the few 10 race trophy deals that the contenders have actually HAD to race, they can't just sit back and ride around in say 20th to get the trophy?

GinaV24 said...

Anon, nope it's not just you. Every time she speaks, it makes me grit my teeth waiting for whatever silly comment will come out of her mouth.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Not just you. She is a square peg in a round hole with NASCAR.

GinaV24 said...

and a stupid peg to boot. Much prefer Wendy V or Krista for any NASCAR coverage.

Sally said...

She might do well somewhere else, but Nascar is really not her niche. She's had enough time to improve is she was going to.

Sally said...

Like the way, say Nicole Briscoe has done. A world of difference from when she started.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Kenseth in the wall, pancakes the side of his car. No mention.

ChrisKRacing said...

Come on RB, I want to see who Tony is chasing, not his face and hands.

huh. they're recapping, using old audio from the 99, & my twitter feed says the 17 slapped the wall during the commercial.

guess since he's not the 99 or 14, it's not important.

sbaker17 said...

Does the 48 problem mean the 24 & 88 will have problems too?

GinaV24 said...

72 cameras and we see the 48 on pit road and the 99.

gordon says it's raining now.

JD,
Carl Edwards told Claire B yesterday after the NW race that he wasn't sure yet how many NW races he was going to run next year. Maybe he was just being coy.

Nice picture of the rainbow, heard that the 14 is getting the "best" HMS equipment.

Be nice if ESPN took some fan questions during the red flag.

Zetona said...

Clearly, the wider shots and focus on drivers other than Edwards and Stewart we saw in the first 50 laps gave me false hope.

Daly Planet Editor said...

NorCal,

Jack Roush said Carl is not involved with the NNS program he runs for next season because he is working full time for ESPN on the NNS races.

red said...

this little segment typifies the difference between edwards & stewart: one is conferencing w/his crew chief, car chief, etc. the other is walking down pit road, smiling, talking to a reporter, messing with his crew.

just an observation.

KudzuCarl said...

JD - Since we've got a break here, I wanted to thank you for running this site again this year. Much appreciated, and enjoyed.

I would like to thank you for running this site and devoting all your time and efforts to this project.

You are always the shining light in a dark period for NASCAR

KudzuCarl said...

I wonder how CAT, Home Depot, and some of those other big dollar sponsors feel about the total lack of coverage for their drivers. Even if NASCAR doesn't care about their fans, they are eventually going to have to address sponsor dissatisfaction in the sport.

Dennis said...

"Buschseries61 said...

Not completely true. They did show Tony putting the bumper to him. LOL.

Anonymous said...

Ny word on how bad "black Monday" and the layoffs will be this upcoming week? Roush down a team, no Red Bull, Childress down a team and generally no better on the economic front.

Could be a bad week.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Carl, it's a huge issue. ESPN is squarely to blame for doing it.

Covering the Chase as if the other cars do not exist unless they lead the race has been a hot topic since 2007.

Andy D said...

A really great broadcast today. Lots of wide shots, good updates on Stewart's condition despite their initial mis-handling. They seem to be covering a lot of other competitors as well. I also appreciate that there's no football ticker at the bottomn. Disappointing that the rainstorm broke the rhythm.

My only complaint is that we don't need that bar showing the ponts difference. Maybe just show it every 50 laps, or when they close to within 10.

PammH said...

I too want to thank JD for this spot to join together w/Nascar fans on Sunday. We have lost a few due to the poor coverage-they just couldn't take it anymore. I never turned on the TV until 3 myself today. Couldn't see where anyone would have anything diff to say that they haven't said all wk.

Daly Planet Editor said...

As I mentioned earlier, told over 100 from Roush. Red Bull still said to be totally closing. If RCR keeps their folks, then the former KHI guys are all out.

It's a bad time up that way.

saltsburgtrojanfan said...

Speakin of rain delays I amwatching the 1991 Champion Spark Plug 500. That race had a 95+ minute rain delay. The race was restarted and ran the full distance. ESPN telecasted the race with Bob Jenkins and Ned Jarrett. Benny Parsons was not at the race due to BP being at the bedside of his very ill wife Connie ( she died during the race). ESPN even gave instuctions on how to send letters of condolences to BP during the rain delay. Darrell Waltrip won the race BTW.

Covering the Pits: Dr. Jerry Punch and John Kernan.

What a differnce 20 years make for a TV channel

Daly Planet Editor said...

Pammmmm,

You missed 5.5 hours of Massaro, Craven, Smith, Spake, Alexander, Evernham, Roberts, K. Petty, K. Wallace, Joy, DW, Wood, Larry Mac, Hermie and Wendy all saying the same thing over and over again.

saltsburgtrojanfan said...

The Team sponsors may have to respond to ESPN's incompetence.

ESPN may have to respond to the non chasers backlash

GinaV24 said...

JD, let me add my thank you to the rest. This site is so much fun for us and I know it's a lot of work for you, but I do firmly believe that it has saved my sanity relative to NASCAR.

Until I found you, I thought I was the only one who was frustrated.

Dennis said...

GinaV24 Exactly. I thought maybe there was something wrong with me as I was so frustrated by the coverage. JD's twitter led me to this site. Nice to know you're not alone. :)

And, JD, I'd like to thank you for all your hard work. It makes a difference. Believe me.

Anonymous said...

I bet some sponsors have a "chase clause" in their contract.

More money if a driver makes the chase and they get more exposure.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Just express yourself without all the name calling and weird words.

No one here understands why you scream about the announcers when they are not screaming themselves.

Makes no sense at all.

The kid does not bother me but I took steps to deal with the adult.

If I come back in this form next season it will be Wordpress with sign-in to avoid that stuff.

Just stuck with blogspot because it is available to everyone, even those with the most fundamental Internet access.

It's just a little life lesson that confirms that those who cannot participate must disrupt.

Feel kinda sad for both of them.

This is why I tell few people I watch NASCAR :-(

Wonder if they will ever get this race going again. Burton out of firesuit can't be good sign.

I didn't even see the limited sense of humor that Red mentioned. And just think all of us were already IN the airport having been through TSA security.

I'm sure the gas man wasn't thinking about them or the FL and whatever you call the VP's lady one bit.

For a guy who appears to have never met a microphone he didn't like, yes, it's strange. And this is one of the reasons I can't stand Carl. According to drivers and others, he isn't the person he presents himself as.

Him posturing in front of the camera is something like Meryl Streep on screen. You don't believe them. You watch them "act" with all the little things they do.

That being said, I'm surprised Tony agreed to be an in race reporter. If I were in their position, I wouldn't want any more distractions than necessary.

Most of the engine will be the same next year. Just the intake is different.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Dennis,

I talked to ESPN about that. Carl just did not want to get distracted inside the car and be the in-race reporter.

Tony said no problem, remember he is an owner and wants all he can get of sponsor exposure.

I am fascinated that ESPN is going to use Carl on the air next season. As if Rusty and Brad are not enough, Carl is going to be an even stranger conflict of interest announcer.

I have had some horrible problems on a client's site because his readers are mostly older luddites who rely on IE because it's the default for Windows and when I try to diagnose things, I have to explain what a browser is. Fuggedabout asking them to empty the cache or clear the cookies.

Firefox usually is the most stable browser both on Windows and Mac I've seen. IE makes web designers say things you know are not safe for broadcast!

Tony is definitely on a mission tonight!

The mission to win the cup!

LOL, yeah, I also thought the spotter's comment was a Capt. Obvious moment - nah, I think I'll just let it hit the wall. sheesh.

I also agree that the bromance between Chad and Jimmie is probably ending - "keep driving" from the crew chief after the car spins? Yeah, that will work.

Pumped back down?

Wow, that was a big wreck. That doesn't usually happen at homestead.

Cole Witt and Landon Cassill are in this race?

I have no idea who the voice behind Theorangecone is on twitter but he's funny:) "TheOrangeCone -
Told Smoke before the race the brass balls hanging off the rear bumper were probably too much. Apparently he has another set inside the car."

For those of us in the UK, it is on Premier Sports. They were offering a freeview today, so non-subscribers could see it. It ran from race start to 11pm local time (45 minutes ago). The race is still on for those of us that subscribe, but some people not happy.

Hope the changes JD talked about does not involve Nicole disappearing. She has done a great job, considering what she has to work with.

Thanks for this site in 2011.

This is definately the season of inanimate objects on Twitter. Did I spell that right?

Lug nut got stuck on the gun on Tony's pit stop.

Time for Darian to snag Ryan Newman's pit crew.

ya know, Tony's attitude is making me *not* want him to win. Ordinarily I find him amusing, but this is just over the top, even for him. There's still lots of time for stuff to happen. I suppose for some it's a way of pumping themselves up. I'm kind of tired of hearing it though.

Delenn, we got some folks working to try and get the free feed continued since the race is running long.

Shame they were asleep at the switch!

"definitely" not spelled correctly, JD!

Really good racing today. I'd pay to see this live.

GinaV24 said...

holy crap, there is a lot of dirt or whatever on the track.

Jessica said...

well you can't fine an inanimate object. And yes you did spell that right #nascargrammrnazi ;)

JD, it is a shame as Premier Sports have done a great job this season. Good pictures, all the races (including overruns and weekday races) live. Freeview of Trucks and Nationwide races this weekend, only to mess up on the big one.

Post on here is they think they have sorted it, as I subscribe so I still have it on.

Thanks

JD,
It's spelled definitely. :>)

Only reason ESPN showed the four wide was because it was on the back of the shot framed on Stewart.

Awful.

Glen, Tony's always been a sarcastic SOB. I don't like him, but I do root for Chevy and I can't stand Roush and his band of roushketeers so I am cheering for him although I'd rather not.
