Sprint Cup Series On FOX From Talladega

It's been a wet morning at Talladega with a consistent rain. NASCAR has advised the teams in the driver's meeting that an updated schedule will be announced at noon ET. The good news is that the rain has passed and it looks like it's just a matter of drying the track. That effort normally takes about two hours.

The usual cast of characters is along for the ride this week on FOX. Michael Waltrip is driving in the race, but will still be a part of the TV coverage from start to finish. It will be interesting to see just how much FOX uses him and in what type of a roll once the race begins.

Originally, we were told Jeff Hammond would return to his past role of being located in the Hollywood Hotel since Waltrip was racing, but things have a way of changing at FOX these days.

It's been a tough comple of weeks for Darrell Waltrip and the FOX gang. It should be interesting to see if anything changes for the coverage today once things get underway.

We will be on Twiter with the #TDP1 livestream. Just come to Twitter.com and type #TDP1 into the search box to see your conversation. Join Twitter and tag your tweets with #TDP1 to be included. Feel free to post your comments on the coverage here as well. There will be a full post here after the race for your comments.

Thanks for stopping by! Photo from Jeff Gluck via Twitter.

I'll bet he comes in when Mikey heads to the track.

Mr Editor -
Sorry that FOX persists in pushing dumb and dumber in pre-race ...time for a little A&E and Billy the Exterminator ...guess it's too much to hope for dumb and dumber to be trapped and relocated to non-broadcast TV, eh?

This is really painful watching these clowns. So far, no mention of DW's comments about the fans or Fan Council. I get the feeling I'm wasting my time. Oh well, hope you have a great turnout at Twitter today. Should be a lot to talk about.

This is disjointed at best. The Waltrips continue to try and top each other while both offering the driver viewpoint.

It's lacking a crew chief perspective and hard news/interviews.

Rather watch pro wrestling so far. What a load of crap.

I hate to give DW props, but the pretaped segment he did on the prerace show about Talladega racing with a split screen of Carl Edwards' wreck and Bobby Allison's wreck was some of the best stuff he has done. Don't know who the producer was on that but they deserve a pat on the back. Great work!

The return of Pizzi!

Got ESPN3 on the lap top with the NHRA and will add MRN when the clowns are done. Too bad we don't have F-1 this weekend too.

Two Waltrips in the infield studio is two too many!

NASCAR confirming track dry, ready for 2PM start.

Cleared off here in NJ, so I got some of the grass mowed. I never watch the pre-race crap anymore, too much junk, not enough info.

Going to watch the start then go out and do some more yard work. According to the clock on trackpass, there's 15 minutes beore the race starts, but they gave the command, so are they just going to burn fuel and warm up the track for 15 minutes?

Well, in response to your column earlier in the week, they just promoted 'the big one'.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Crashing has been the theme, including a feature done by DW that just replayed all the biggest crashes in the history of the track.

It's been pandering to the lowest common denominator.

Buschseries61 said...

"...a big or exciting crash" - Jeff Hammond

nice start looking good w camera work! Oh and look at that crowd a healthy healthy looking one much better than a year ago!!!!

RPM said...

Nice to know I'm "the lowest common denominator". Wrecks are part of racing. They have changed the way race. I don't watch racing to see the wrecks, but they wreck when I watch racing.

Buschseries61 said...

Pretty good camerawork so far. My only complaint is DW yapping away.

RPM said...

They have changed the way race.

That's supposed to be they have changed the way we race.

Oops.

They could get away with close-up on the tandem stuff, but these big packs just won't allow for it.

Buschseries61 said...

Mike Joy did a great job doing a recap of all the changes/penalties after pit stops.

Larry just shouted four wide, but I can't see it from a camera under the bumper.

Anon your the one that kills it for us. grow up go somewhere else get a hobbie... go sleep with a boy or somthing cause you sure are gay!

Jonathan said...

Fox can you cover every race like this???!!!?!!

Jonathan said...

PLEASE :) cause I love what im seeing so far

Why all of a sudden - the Fox crew
DW Joy etc -- what is it with the
OVERLY LOUD TALKING AND TOO MUCH
TALKING?????
They were the last bastion of
hope and sanity. And Gordo..will
not can not win .. because when
he brings th kid to the race ..
no can do.
Of course he is NO CAN DO for the
last few years Peace Oot

FOX has done a better job taking DW's claim how hard the drivers are working and showing it on tv. I feel very focused into the race rather than feeling disconnected like the past few FOX races.

We've seen more of the side-by-side battles in the back of the pack rather than watching single file drafting in the front.

They have kept the cameras wide and kept a nice perspective of the pack.

What they need to work on:
- They haven't really documented how hot the water temps. are in the cars. They haven't given us an answer what the problem was with the 78 and the 39...now they are doing the 39 as I type

RPM said...

Is it so difficult to put a stopwatch on a pit stop?

Buschseries61 said...

Now is not the time to go to Jeff Hammond!

What drivers are overheating the most? Are there temperature differences between Chevy/Ford/Dodge/Toyota? Pit reporters - where are you?

Jonathan said...

I liked that Jeff Hammond segment. it was quick and unique...

Love the way fox is presenting this race... reminds me of when Fox was king when it came to covering Nascar

Buschseries61 said...

I wish whatever company that pays for the mid-race report mess would rather direct their money towards side-by-side commercials. Show me more of the race, don't take away from it.

Jonathan said...

if Fox covered every race like this I think all the talk of boring green flag racing would be silenced cause when you show us the racing we forget about the wrecks cause id rather see the battles than just 2 cars (cause when you make the coverage boring people want excitment so there mind turns to wanting to see somthing other than just hyper tight coverage!)

Buschseries61 said...

Jeff Hammond would be great if they just made him a pit reporter. He knows the equiptment, the strategies, the people, and the right questions to ask. He belongs on pit road instead of searching around for something to report.

It's a shame he is at FOX because they have the most qualified reporters and no room for him. He could work the TNT pits instead of Turner borrowing the SPEED guy. He also knows more about the pits than ESPN's Jamie Little and Vince Welch combined.

Buschseries61 said...

Kudos to Mike Joy responding to DW's stupidity. Clearly Biffle and Kenseth don't like each other because they aren't drafting together. Earth to DW, there's 8 cars between them.

Gordo could never ever win today.
I have told the team that Gordo
nevahhh wins with the Kid in the
Garage area. Of course he hasnt
won many times anyway.
And DW -- has been singing the
praises of Gordo. all year long.
Get me outa here before I say
something like
THE ANNOUNCERS TALK TO MUCH AND
TOO LOUD AMEN

FOX needs to show the intervals more. I know they are trying to catch the attention of the casual fans with the 200+ mph speeds highlighted in yellow. But that's been well established over 100 laps in, I'd like to see who is on the lead lap and who is a lap down at this point in the race.

Buschseries61 said...

Wow, they loaded all the commercials in the second half of the race. Hopefully this is the last at 18 to go.

Buschseries61 said...

Arghhhh...they missed that wreck.

Buschseries61 said...

Another wreck missed live, ####ing in-car camera with less than 10 to go.
