In-Progress At Texas: NASCAR RaceDay And Victory Lane
Sunday at Texas features a two hour NASCAR RaceDay show that is back in its normal timeslot of two hours before the race coverage. Beginning at 1:30PM Eastern Time, this means once again that the second hour of RaceDay will be competing head-to-head with ABC's NASCAR Countdown pre-race show.
John Roberts, Jimmy Spencer, and Kenny Wallace make up the RaceDay panel, with Wendy Venturini reporting from the garage and pit areas. Hermie Sadler provides the track description and pilots SPEED-1, the network's camera car. Ricki Rachtman continues to participate in the season-long contest for picking race winners.
Following the race itself, SPEED will present the one hour Victory Lane show at 8PM. Hosted again by John Roberts, this program is on a slight delay to allow for a race running long. Jimmy Spencer and Kenny Wallace also provide commentary. This program interviews the race winner, his crew chief, his owner, and offers Bob Dillner interviewing other drivers and crew chiefs after the event.
This page will host your comments about these two programs on SPEED. To add your opinion, simply click on the COMMENTS button below and follow the instructions. I like this show better when it's only an hour, less filler and quicker pace.
I don't mind the length of the show... it allows for more content.
Sometimes I wish they had formatted a couple more pre-produced features like Wendy V's Real Deal that could be produced during the week.
There are so many things from business items to charity events that surround the sport, it seems strange that for two hours all we get is the "at-track" activity mixed with one or two features.
If this show ever decided to harness its power, it could get millions donated to charity, focus the sport on real news issues, and put viewers in touch with the NASCAR types who really run the series on a day-in and day-out basis. Some of them are fascinating.
JD Race Day has shown their power at least once. Kenny Wallace made the All Star Race as the fan's choice directly as a result of Speed and Race Day. I agree that there should be a few more canned pieces (I love Real Deal) as long as they are like RD and not the goofy ones with Spencer or Rutledge. That said I still like all the interviews with driver, CC, etc there are more of them on this show than anything on ESPN. The drivers etc also definately enjoy the Speed interviews prob because they are asked questions by people that understand the sport.
When RaceDay was NASCAR This Morning, it used to have a lot more taped features about drivers and their off track events like charity. When it became RaceDay, those went away. maybe a management change decision?
Also may be that NASCAR Nation was still in production at that time and NASCAR this Morning either used their existing features from the week or used their staff of reporters/hosts/producers to create new features for Sundays.
Carl Edwards interview! Because we just haven't seen enough of him the past two weeks.
That was one of the few good things about NASCAR Nation - they showed drivers making charity appearances.
But that show was all fluff. Nobody can seem to get the right mix of news and fluff.
Nice segment on pit road danger on today's RaceDay. That's the kind of thing that the TV shows should be showing to educate the non hard-core fan. It teaches the newbie about an aspect of the sport but it's still interesting to the long-time fan.
Yeah, I knew about each of the pit road injuries that they covered from the past. But the interviews with those involved were interesting and even the explanation from Knauss about keeping track of a pit stop was cool to listen to.
Another example of someone at Speed getting it right.

"Redemption Tour 2007" has Texas and two more stops to go. ;-)
On a serious note, that was a pretty big cheer from the crowd for Wendy when they went to her in the garage area. She's getting really popular.
Then again, as soon as Ricki Rachtman shows up on the screen, it makes me want to switch to football. That guy is a complete tool. Thankfully, as JD has pointed out, they just seem to be keeping him around for the "pick the race winner" comp.
I really wish that TV sports would stop thinking that they can pull in different fans by hiring a metalhead, or a latino, or a skateboarder, or a geeky white guy, or a basketball player, or whatever the current "flavor" is. I don't need to watch someone who looks like me, I just need to watch someone who is good at their job.
Come on...Edwards just won a NASCAR Championship!!! You guys on here will be screaming bloody murder if the Truck champion only gets a couple of interviews like Edwards. Every show and network will be interviewing Edwards, since he is the Champ, not everyone parks their dumper in front of the TV and watches every minute of all the Nascar shows!
Great Bruton interview. "they'll like some of the things we do" when talking about New Hampshire fans..can you say losing a race. Now JR and the boys now how to ask the questions. Ryan take notes for next time. As usual Wendy's real deal was fantastic I may never look at pit road the same. Putting a face on those guys makes me more aware of the danger they are in.

Funny, I didn't hear him give any real answers to anything.
opening ceremonies are occurring early. this could mean a long commercial break on speed.
spell check:
Interesting...SPEED aired the command to start the engines then left abruptly. They usually don't do that. I think something weird is going on. NASCAR wants to start the race early.
A tape delayed Victory Lane will start in 1 minute.
what are the cars running in the back ground on VL?? That is annoying.
The race is over..what gives
Legends cars race. Thanks JR I was wondering

for a racing fan, you seem to get really annoyed by loud noises.
I was out of the room and missed JR saying it was the Legends race.
THANK YOU NR Fan!! it was oddd to hear cars AFTER the cup race, LOL.
I wouldn't mind seeing more features such as coverage of driver's charity events on RaceDay, but Wendy would probably need someone else to help her -she can only do so much. I'm not a fan of Rutledge, so he'd be out for me.
The NASCAR Nation person I liked a lot was Courtney George, who was like Wendy in many ways. But from a quick google, she went to CNN Headline News sports after SPEED, so don't know if she's still there or is availalbe.
I didn't mind Vicki Johnson all that much either and I think she's still covering racing in some fashion.
