In-Progress At Richmond: Sprint Cup Series On Fox

Update: Here we go again! The Major League Baseball game on Fox is now overlapping the pre-race show. The green flag is at 7:45PM Eastern Time. The East Coast and West Coast (portions) are seeing the Mets vs. Diamondbacks game. Other areas in the Central time zone are seeing the NASCAR pre-race. This is called regional broadcasting and Fox is finishing the Mets game on the stations that started it.

The Sprint Cup Series is under the lights at the Richmond International Raceway for what should be an interesting night of TV coverage.

Chris Myers will start the evening off for Fox from the Hollywood Hotel with a forty-five minute pre-race show at 7PM Eastern Time. Darrell Waltrip and Jeff Hammond will be alongside.

Mike Joy will anchor the race coverage, with Waltrip and Larry McReynolds in the booth. Down on pit road will be Dick Berggren, Matt Yocum, Steve Byrnes and Krista Voda.

The dynamics of this short "bull ring" are very different than Talladega, and proved to be trouble for the ESPN crew on Friday night. It was tough to keep-up with all the action on the track, and several replays of accidents were not available.

This is a "tension" race. The first couple runs are about feeling out the track, the car and the tire wear. Then, the jockeying for position begins and the end result is often hot tempers and bent cars. It should be interesting to watch the NASCAR on Fox crew make this transition after the Talladega race of team tactics and drafting.

Fox has calmed down on the "Digger" cam and instead emphasized the in-car cameras at Talladega throughout the event. It should be interesting to see what TV approach they take in Richmond, where laps of under 22 seconds should make it tough to use the "TV toys" available unless the race is under caution.

Update: I have been reminded that a live baseball game on Fox started at 3:30PM. With the pre-race show starting at 7PM, this allows the normal amount of time for the game. Should things go into extra innings or rain delay the game, Fox will once again find itself shifting baseball to FX or collapsing the NASCAR pre-race show.

Obviously we can all see with our own two eyes that Fox DOES NOT have a lower third ticker, and never has, so therefore we all know (except one)that JD was referencing ESPN. Please use some common sense.

Has anybody flat-out said that this race is boring? Because it is. No two ways about it. Broadcast and race, though I guess the guys in the both don't have much to work with.

Last night was boring too, except for the post-race incident. Richmond used to to be incredibly exciting, this is sad.

though time for mickey, I would have been pissed off too at Casey. the 5 just pushed the 55 into the wall and that is the truth.

I hear you. My room mate and I have said for years the graphics craze has ruined all sports. I don't care how groundbreaking something is...it can be over done and take up too much space. all the sponsorships and stuff...goodness.

I would have on MRN but the station appears to have lowered it's FM signal or the change of weather has affected it. Wah.

If only we would've seen THIS MUCH of the track at Dega last week (one of my fave tracks to see on tv, aside from it being RP)

Have they done many bumper cams tonight? If only we would've had this last week.

DANG..Michael having more problems...He was so close last week...before his engine blew up...one lap away from the white flag and 'still the same old Mike.'

He had a couple good Mikeyisms last week, I must say. :=)

another missed restart

Anonymous said...

another missed restart by Fox tonight - why can't they get it right?

Sophia said...

Mikey got parked! Rats...I may have to break down and tape that lame show he's on now. Watch it backwards for 9 minutes of 'talk'.??

What a couple of weeks he has had....sheesh.

Vicky D said...

I hate when they say - the green flag just comes out and of course we missed just a bit of it. Like after the red flag too. Am happy with the broadcast tonight and with the pitroad reporters. Did I miss they say what happened to Jerry Punch?

Anonymous said...

funny - mikey gets parked and not a word from Jarry or DW. How? Why? Fair? NASCAR's Reason?

NOTHING!!

Anonymous said...

anon this race is NOT boring. are you watching it???

bevo said...

Sorry, didn't mean to upset you so much.

Anonymous said...

anon, I dont think a word has to be said! its self explanatory! why do you have to turn it into a "bad nascar" or "bad fox" kind of thing?

bevo said...

In defense of Fox, missed restarts are just a part of short track racing on tv

bevo said...

Not boring at all. Lot's of different strategies playing out, plenty of wrecks if you're into that, and it looks like a close finish coming.

bevo said...

Now that's a pass for the lead!

Anonymous said...

well said bevo.

Anonymous said...

Poor Denny :(.

Anonymous said...

here we go....closing laps caution. a great race about to happen, televised well by FOX.

bevo said...

Boy, Hamlin staying out to bring the yellow. Needs to get a big fine.

Sophia said...

yea, short tracks are tough for restarts.

What I want to know is I OPEN MY MOUTH about lack of bumper cams (which made me happy!) and suddenly a flood of bumper cams.

I think this race has been VERY exciting!!!

bevo said...

oh no he didn't!

CRUD! Poor Jr.

AND YOU SAID THIS RACE WAS BORING!!!!!!!!!

bevo said...

Someone is going to need an armed escort to his helicopter tonight. After that watch out for ground-to-air missiles out there in the hills :)

Yes I'm joking!

Sophia said...

Somebody needs a blown engine right now.

Newracefan said...

JJ says he's never seen so many middle fingers from the fans in his life and I think some fans threw stuff on the track but not sure about that part

Anonymous said...

Drama in the last 20 laps of a 400 lap race, plus one big wreck does not make an exciting race. The first half barely had a lead change.

I'm not drinking the Kool-aid, sorry.

bevo said...

Glad DW can read Shrubs mind.

Sophia said...

OH PUHLEASE!!! if that was somebody else wrecking JR...DW would be singing a different tune.

I'm gonna be sick. he really has KB fever.

If we have another 10 car pile up, Jr, sweetie, you still have a chance!

i think the guys on tv are trying to stop a riot.

Anonymous said...

anon if you think this is a boring race you are not a true NASCAR fan. this is classic Saturday night racing.

nice wide shot at the finish!

Thanks for the WIDE SHOT FINISH.

I have a sore throat from yelling..glad my cats were in the other end of the house. I went ballistic..like I did when Vickers took out JJ and Jr at Dega.

:(

NO POST RACE TONIGHT?? Wah...DADDY!!

The only good news, KB did not win...I bet Jr was ready to cry...

I sure was.

Anonymous said...

ALL AROUND GREAT RACE!! I want to see Jr. confront Kyle.

Sophia said...

Bevo

what are you hearing about Jr!! I am stunned at what took place..I so wanted the drought to be over so the media would shut up.

Spring Rubber said...

IMO, that wasn't the way to cover the finish. With the tight battle for second going on, the director shouldn't have even thought about using the close up on Bowyer as he crossed the line; they should've gone straight to the wide shot of the line from the turn 1 camera.

Anonymous said...

JD this is exactly WHY we need post race on saturday from SPEED!!! AND SPEED WANTS ME TO WAIT 24 HOURS TO GET REACTION AFTER THIS????

Sure makes SPEED's decision maybe not so smart right now.

What was that snarky comment KB made?? It's not about Jr all the time?

WTF?????????????

Anonymous said...

Drama in the last 20 laps of a 400 lap race, plus one big wreck does not make an exciting race.

Agreed. Hamlin led for 380!! laps. That's not a race...that's a parade. I AM a true NASCAR fan and I know that much. It's getting ridiculous that some kind of last laps controversy overshadows the fact that no racing had taken place in the previous laps.

bevo said...

Jr was speeding up and Eury told him to calm down, told him they will return the favor down the road. He kept talking about the points.

Sophia said...

Oh, Junior.He is really depressed.

darn...Oh, please, Krista you did not need to say that "going to Darlington hungrier than ever"

PUT SOME MORE PRESSURE on the boy. *#&!()#&!()#&!)(#&!()#&!(^#!&*&!%

Anonymous said...

I hope Krista gave Jr. a hug after the interview - he needs one.

Anonymous said...

I didn't like the incident happened between Kyle and Dale Jr, but I loved DW's emotion when it happened "NO NO NO NO NO NO". You could tell he didn't want it to happen to either guy.

Newracefan said...

NO top 35 Fox did you forget

Anonymous said...

anon, just look at everything that is going on in your TV. all the emotion is real. all the stories are real. It does not matter that Denny lead many laps. that's how it goes sometimes. Richard Petty won races 1 lap or more ahead of the field and led the whole race. DID you complain back then??? I don't think so.

A great race today. this is why I am a NASCAR fan.

Anonymous said...

I didn't sign on to watch a soap opera and see who is mad at who. I signed on to watch racing. The racing wasn't good.

The FOX team did their job well, but the racing wasn't good. Goodnight.

Anonymous said...

Horrible decision by SPEED not to have post race today...I don't want to wait until tomorrow! SPEED are you listening? You could have had the highest rated NASCAR Victory Lane tonight, but you decided not to air it!! maybe a change is in order for next Saturday night???

ESPNEWS does not have a dedicated show for post race. SPEED would have done a much better job.

Anonymous said...

JD, do you know if ESPNEWS, will break in for at least some post race interviews?

Glenn said...

I give FOX an "A" for todays coverage. Very good overall
Goodnight to all!

bevo said...

Great job to interview Hamlin and not even ask him about running on a flat to bring out the caution for your teammate.

Anonymous said...

newracefan, they ran about 40 minutes late, they didn't have time for all the post-race they wanted

Anonymous said...

KB on ESPNEWS right now.

bevo said...

Solid job by Fox. Like the changed ticker, good camera work for the most part. Still need to cover the top 35.

WTF?????????????

No. KB was talking about the crew member on the 88, Rick(?) Pidgeon, who used to be his friend.

Charlie said...

Just for the heck of it I kept track of how many times they used the Digger cam and this included the one next to the outside wall. This does not include any used during a yellow or red flag. And I may have missed a few but this is close.
63 times from my count.
I know there is nothing to compare this number to but thought it was interesting.

bevo said...

Sincerity just oozes out of the Shurb doesn't it?

Sophia said...

Thanks karen for the explanation....sorry for the snit tonight...I don't like to talk about Jr much because the way the media focuses on him too much but he is one of the drivers I REALLY want to win. To get his now "Danica Patrick" moment over, if you will...regarding his drought.

Sophia said...

Bevo

You stole my sincerity line about that stinking shrub!!

He IS a piece of work, ain't he????

I have decided ESPN News is annoying..you wait and wait and they cut drivers off mid sentence all the time to leave the scene. Too annoying. If they are going to leave they should let a guy finish his point.

course they cut off shrub and I was thrilled. Wish they could've clipped the boy more !!

Sophia said...

Charlie

Thanks for the digger counts.

Did you by any chance count the bumper cams last week? Or more importantly, the times Fox did NOT USE IN CAR CAMS? Still appreciate your patience to count Digger...it's really taken on a life of it's own..mentioned on Trackside, SPEEDs other shows including TWIN...goodness.

Bevo I gotta admit, coming here and seeing somebody else post about that lack of sincerity did make me smile through my disappointment.

I've seen more sincere politicians!!!

Meow ouch.

ok kids, lets not turn this into a "lets bash kyle" session. He is really a good kid and it was not his intention to spin Jr. out.

Ho hum, just another race..... LOL.

JD,

I'm sorry that Northwest Pennsylvania was airing the Cubs-Cardinals game and I missed all the fun. Thankfully for you guys that was only a 9 inning game in Arizona.

On to the race....

First of all major kudos to the Fox production crew.

I absolutely LOVE the new ticker and LOVE the graphical switcharoo of real-time position changes. Much more pleasing to my eye than two names switching places with no graphical transition. Still a lot of lag in updating the intervals but I'm sure they'll get that technology perfected soon enough like ESPN has.

I also appreciate the effort to show all the cars cross the finish line at the end of the race. They still messed it up since we missed the side-by-side battle for 2nd place when the director inexplicably switched to the infield cam that zoomed on Bowyer as he crossed the line. Seeing the winner and 6th place on back is certainly a huge improvement over just the winner so I am very greatful for that. Now if they can just work on keeping one wide shot out of turn 4 and locking that camera on the line like ESPN does, they can clean up that little issue of missing the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th place finishers.

On-air crew, another solid day as always.

Anonymous said...

"director inexplicably switched to the infield cam that zoomed on Bowyer as he crossed the line. "

UM....no he didnt....that camera you saw zoom in on Clint had been following the pack on your TV since the backstretch!!! The Director then cut to the wide shot once he saw that camera's assignment was to zoom in to the winning car.

stricklinfan82 said...

anon @ 12:10,

Just checked the video again. They used a ground level wall cam to show the cars through 3 and 4, then switched to showing Bowyer (and Bowyer only) cross the line on the zoomed cam and then switched to the wide shot camera and saw Truex (5th place) on back cross the line.

What I'm expressing is that I would have preferred to see the director switch from the turn 3/4 ground level cam (whatever you call it) to the wide shot directly, instead of adding that cut to the zoom shot of the winner that caused us to miss the 8, 18, and 20 finish.

I'm happy with the effort, just pointing out how it could have been done better to catch the side-by-side race for second. Pretty much the exact same thing happened at Texas. When they added the extra cut to the winner zoom camera, they missed the third place cars crashing and didn't get to the wide shot of the finish line until the 8th or so place cars crossed the line.

I appreciate you trying to correct a mistake you felt that I made. I am always in favor of people trying to do everything they can to make sure others aren't exaggerating the facts to promote their own agendas. But if you go back and check the tape again you will see that my recap of events was indeed correct.

Sophia said...

I must say though many stations have done lousy finishes or half hearted attempts at the finish line, I love the standard wide angle IN FRONT of the pack as they come forward towards the camera for the finish.

That is great. Big improvement over last weekend...course, short of the power going out, anything would've been an improvement over the cup broadcast..camera wise!!

:)

I bet the left coast ratings for Victory Lane would be much, much higher tonight than they will be Sunday night - especially for the so-called casual fan.

Thanks to all the Richmond crew, great job tonight on both pictures and sound. And no rain!

went to sleep at 10:40 ET and DVR's the last hour and watched it this AM

tv crew didnt get any interviews or any follow-up on M Waltrip being parked nor did C Mears get interviewed. on the replay it looked intentional but perhaps a stuck gas pedal? He has had stranger things found in his fuel and garage and I like MW.
