In-Progress At Indy: Sprint Cup Race On ESPN

After six months of rehearsing with the Nationwide Series, Sunday at 1PM brings the debut of ESPN's transition to the Sprint Cup.

Allen Bestwick will lead the panel of Rusty Wallace, Brad Daugherty and Ray Evernham from the Infield Pit Center through a one-hour version of NASCAR Countdown. This pre-race show is going to be talking about the critical Goodyear tire issue which will dominate this telecast.

This pressing issue is sure to change the scripted nature of what ESPN had planned for this hour and continues to change as showtime approaches. The pit reporters are going to be put to the test in this show.

It will be Dave Burns, Jamie Little, Shannon Spake and Mike Massaro who will be charged with keeping the viewers up to date from pit road, the garage area and the Infield Medical Center. Spake was a fill-in last season and is still coming up to speed with live TV, the other three are veterans from last season's coverage.

Upstairs will be Dr. Jerry Punch, Dale Jarrett and Andy Petree. Punch will be handling the play-by-play duties for this second season with the very bright spotlight shining on this high-profile position. He struggled last year on these longer races and often appeared to be very tired only halfway through the event.

The big new fish in the ESPN pond is Dale Jarrett. He has been the savior of ESPN this season with his calm demeanor and his strong knowledge of the sport. Coupled with Andy Petree, this duo has all the bases covered for ESPN and should be the strongest part of the Indy coverage.

ESPN has been challenged to abandon the "scripted" approach to these races that drove fans crazy last year, and the Indy tire problems may be just what the doctor ordered. The network is going to be forced to deal with the reality of this problem rather than stick with the stories it chose to highlight in the pre-race show.

Look for solid triple splits on the caution flag pit stops with ESPN trying to do everything possible to cover the most important part of this event, the race off pit road. It is entirely possible that the order leaving the pits will be the order finishing the race with all the COT issues.

Bestwick is very different from former infield host Suzy Kolber, so TV viewers should not be subjected to celebrity interviews and ESPN promos during green flag racing. The network also has to choose when to insert SportsCenter updates and other non-racing content.

The HD cameras at Indy are always outstanding, and this season the ESPN crew produced a memorable Indy 500 IRL telecast. Hopefully, the outstanding pictures and sound will continue with the ESPN TV crew on this broadcast. Look for moving boom and jig cameras in the telecast, especially on pit road.

The final laps of this race call for the big decision on the part of the Producer. Show the drama of the winner alone crossing the finish-line or keep the bigger perspective and show the lead-lap cars all racing to the stripe. It should be interesting to see what ESPN decides this season. In 2007, they chose to show only the winning car and no others cross the line.

This post will serve to host your TV-related comments about the Brickyard 400 telecast on ESPN. To add your comments, simply click on the COMMENTS button below and follow the easy instructions. The rules for posting are located on the right side of the main page. Thanks for joining us for our second Brickyard race.

So much for a favorite race being run today.

What a mess!!

The fans should get a partial refund if they don't get this fixed soon.

Lap 55..how many cautions have their been...I lost count?

hey booth guys? lowe's was pretty nasty as well and i believe dj was driving that night? what's so weird about this is that the tire testing in april didn't give any indication of this problem. hmmmm.

Anonymous said...

I don't understand the outrage here. this had made the race more interesting. and ESPN is doing a good job doing it. Also, there is SO MUCH passing going on!

alex said...

Anon 3:34,
I heard somewhere (maybe Nascar Now, can't remember), that the teams had 10 sets of tires (average 16 laps), in addition to the Pocono tires. I'm not sure how many total sets they have, but I think it would be enough. Also some of the cars out of the race might be able to loan tires to some of their teammates.

DJ and Andy are doing great today. Nice explanation of the lucky dog by DJ.

Sophia said...

I can't believe the guys in the booth said they have never seen anything like this??? Guess they don't remember the night at Lowes...after the levigation there.

I wonder how many people switched over to Arena Football.

Matt said...

Anon 3:37

I agree.. I think this is one of the most interesting races this season. You literally have no idea what will happen next.

It's just unfortunate that this is happening at one of the biggest races of the season.

Daly Planet Editor said...

To me, this is one time that AB would be good in the booth. He always speaks in authoritative terms and handles problems like this.

Punch is relying on Jarrett and Petree to do everything. He keeps calling the race like he always does. Thank goodness for DJ and Andy.

Maybe if the red comes out AB will take it over from the infield.

I don't understand the outrage here. this had made the race more interesting.

i can't imagine what is "interesting" about the drivers being at risk b/c of tire wear. for the casual fan, perhaps. but for me, it's downright frightening and it's not the first time that nascar and goodyear have placed drivers at risk b/c of tires. of course, after lowe's they stated they wouldn't let it happen again. apparently, they meant not again that season.

today is flat out scary.

but i do agree that espn is doing a terrific job and i stand corrected in my pre-race fears that they'd make a hot mess out of this. this is a tough race to cover b/c stuff is happening all over the track and they are doing a great job.

bevo said...

A race isn't interesting when tires explode, that's how you get serious injuries.

Anonymous said...

From AP story earlier today:

If the situation doesn’t improve, there is some concern teams could burn through their entire tire inventory, though Pemberton said when the entire field is on the track Sunday afternoon getting rubber down should be easier.

There was also concern that the decision by NASCAR and Goodyear to not reclaim tires from teams that drop out of the race could create a free-for-all on pit road with teams frantically trying to purchase the extras from other crews.

If the tire allotment runs out, or the Indy tires begin to fail, NASCAR could order the teams to switch to the Pocono tires.

true. what i do remember the 88 team saying after that test is that, when they ran it down to the cords during the test, dale could feel the tire starting to go. apparently, that helped him today b/c he saved his fenders -- and maybe his C-post!

This goes to my earlier point. You don't really need competition yellows to keep tires from blowing out if you know 15 laps is the max they can run. They don't throw competition cautions at the end of fuel runs to keep guys from running out of gas.

Anonymous said...

As mentioned earlier, Dr. Punch truly doesn't seem to have a grasp of what is actually happening out there... and he seems to be getting a little more senile with each lap. He just called Brian Vickers "Brioyers" and confused mark martin with Truex Jr. earlier.

All things considered, this is much more of an interesting race than I've seen at Indy in a while... albeit for all the wrong reasons.

As I type this, my espn channel has frozen with the 31 car in it.

Also, at the test, not enough cars were there to lay rubber so they expected the tires to go quickly. Now that all the cars are there and the rubber is still not sticking it has caught them off guard.

#20 tires much better this time. Maybe rubber is finally sticking!

bevo said...

The thing to remember after the Lowe's race was everyone complained that the tires were way too hard - no passing, no feel. Since then every driver has bitched and moaned that they needed softer, racier tires. Goodyear went to the harder compounds as a direct result of Lowe's. Not good advertising when your tires get destroyed.

Why isn't anybody challenging NASCAR in how they are changing the laps they are going to have competition cautions - after they've already announced it?

And:
What a joke - and ESPN should tell NASCAR they shouldn't have the booth announce the lap for the caution if they're going to change their minds.

July 27, 2008 3:25 PM

My kids noticed this! They thought it was cheating, especially after NASCAR told the crew chiefs AND the network the lap number.

Yeah, changing judgment calls like that looks bad and honestly makes NASCAR look somewhat incompetent. I hope not a whole lot of new fans or open wheel fans are watching today.

Sault Boat Watcher and Red,

Thanks for clearing that up. i still have an answer though. this has happened to F1 and other majors forms of racing. It can happen to anyone. one miscalculation with the tires and you get this. Again, it can happen to anyone.

Daly Planet Editor said...

One time during the winter back in the 1980's we lost power at ESPN and used a guy's new Subaru to jump-start the network.

Needless to say, it blew up the car but the basketball game was back.

Good to know things have not changed too much. One good thunderstorm can mess up any TV facility.

Now they have a generator that is the size of a railroad boxcar. Bet that baby is humming.

Back to the race, we really need to hear from Mike Helton or Robin Pemberton. Something official needs to be said.

I finally saw the video of Tony roughing up that USAC official the other night, in his capacity as owner. Looks worse than it sounded when reading about it unfortunately - Tony came off really badly and will probably get a hefty fine and possibly worse. If that's the way he acts when he's an NASCAR owner, we're in for a ride for sure.

Anonymous said...

JD - Can you help explain why I have not experienced any outages on Dish Network and everyone else has? I am fairly new viewer to your site. I enjoy the insight.

Anonymous said...

Problem is NASCAR changing the lap numbers on a whim messes with a team's tire management strategy. If a driver is expecting to come in at a certain time, they might change the way they drive for a few laps.

Then NASCAR adds 10 more laps onto it?

Not good.

Karen said...

nope: just the usual pocono racing. but then again, i didn't expect today's mess, either. i mean, the testing went ok in april. but this problem became apparent in practice. and i have to give an "attaboy" to nascar for getting those pocono tires to indy last night: they reacted to what they were seeing and being told and came up with an action that might -- just might -- save this race.

i say: switch 'em all to the pocono tires now. that'll give the crew chiefs time to mess with the set-up and still get a finish out of this.

yeah, that surprised me as well. there is a distinct difference between marbles and powder. i've not seen tires in nascar powder out like that.

and my! isn't tony being careful in his remarks in-car? did he really just say "nascar's doing a great job today . . ."?

Aven, that is the most ridiculous comment i have ever heard. GOODYEAR has a proven formula for consumer cars. Racing is where they test new formulas. if it doesn't work in racing THEY ARE NOT GOING TO PUT IT IN YOUR PERSONAL CAR. you have NOTHING to worry about on your personal car.

And where is Brian France today? Maybe he's taking in a Broadway matinee since he just bought a new NYC apartment.

June 24: CEO Brian France is set to be the newest resident of 15 Central Park West: He's buying a 3,100-square-foot apartment on the building's 34th floor for $10.6 million. France won't be the only racing enthusiast in the building, NASCAR driver Jeff Gordon was one of the first known buyers in the building last year.

Goodyear can make a tire to go the entire 400 miles but there wouldn't be any actual racing going on :)

These variables like tires and what not, make NASCAR the best and most exciting sport in the world. I mean, you would never see this in football or baseball.

TexasRaceLady said...

Tell me that wasn't "owner" Tony doing that in-car interview. ROTFL

Wonder if "driver" Tony will show up later. hehehe

Larry Mc doing a great job as a play by play guy.

Just heard on the #9 car scanner:

"I feel really sorry for those people at home watching this today, us just riding around under caution".

Anonymous said...

since zippy won't tell us what the #20 has: the #88 car has 2 sets and 1 set of scuffs.

On IMS radio

Jim Hunter just saidSafety is #1
priority, some of the tires seem to be getting better, 10 lap cautions could be stretched out after they check this last tire set that was just taken off.

Vicky D said...

Tony was very careful with what he said about the tires, I'm thinking he's been told not to say anything bad about them. Also, Tim Brewer showed the powder yesterday during the Nationwide race, I believe, so they've known it more than before racing began today.

I wasn't talking about the quality of their tires, I was talking about them telling the truth. Last time (and only) time I had a warranty issue with Goodyear, I discovered an adjustment with 60% tread remaining saved $1 over buying outright.

Aven,

I'm definately not buying any $1,600 per set Goodyear Racing Eagles for my passenger car! Duh. But I AM keeping the Goodyears I have on it now. Maybe what Goodyear learns today at the track will make your tires better a few years from now.

I wonder if speedy dry ground into the track will help.

BIRDS???????

Daly Planet Editor said...

OK, let's get back to TV stuff folks. Should be an interesting finish.

I'm surprised ESPN showed the bird. Didn't they take some guff from the clip of when Randy Johnson absolutely destroyed a bird with a fastball?

Well it can't hurt LOL

Anonymous said...

You could barley see the bird. I'm sure it wont be a problem.

for some reason, that made me laugh!
and espn guys: great catch on that bird murder by jeff burton!

childress says not goodyear's fault, mr. h says nascar doesn't have any choice and "i think it's getting better," coach says we're all working together and nascar's done a great job. i don't look for anyone to say anything different post-race.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Since this is a long yellow, think we will see SC or Bestwick and company?

Red you are right NASCAR gave them the script a few weeks back & everyone is saying their lines perfectly

Vince said...

Oh, I wish I hadn't seen that Amp advertisement!! Creepy!!!

"NASCAR gave them the script"

If you seriously believe that, I...I don't know what to say anymore...

glad I missed the bird...slow typist here.
Sweet kasey Kahne...feeling the pain of fans watching this.

I am still laughing at Zippy's comments!!!:)

Well, it should be interesting post race shows or VL tonight. Also how much of this is the COT issue ..or truly a mix of issues.

Now that AMP commercial was just gross. I would rather get a thru the field. Mikey back on track not one word. Reut has pitted 50 times I guess from "brushing" the wall, Montoya's back.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Nice job of doing the owner "whip-a-round" about the tires.

Pretty tough situation for all concerned. I wonder if a support series will run here next season to help lay down rubber?

Craftsman Trucks at Indy? Hmmm...

Vicky D said...

Now several owners/crew chiefs are saying that they're just waiting for the last 10 to 12 laps to have a shootout to see who comes out ahead. That AMP commercial was pretty bad too.

They had the meeting it was well documented please feel free to go & check it out

bevo said...

What was the reason for coming back from a commercial to show a blimp shot then go back to more commercials?

lacboi said...

I wonder if the ratings are declining as the race goes on compelling story lines not good racing.

Newracefan said...

Trucks at Indy that would be cool.

JD,

Support series or how about an open day of testing for everybody a day before the normal activities start?

Sophia said...

got nervous for a second..tv's went black/silent a few seconds.

Shame all this great camera work wasted on such a difficult race for ALL INVOLVED!!!

Hope the camera man covered in black dust has some moist wipes in his pocket!:)

Anonymous said...

Gymmie, its ok. its just a slow delay coming back from commercials

Bevo,

well, would or rather have the commercials now or during green closer to the finish?

You know someone is going to cause a big pile-up. Patience is not a virtue with this bunch.

Anonymous said...

haha! Tony said he was relaxing in the car and Zippy said he was having a snack. they are hilarious! Going to miss them together next year!

bevo said...

jo-

I knew that part :)

Just odd timing to me.

the track even LOOKS green on that shot right there.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Vince,

If they change the testing for next season to the day before the first practice, it is going to solve a lot of problems.

Other than the ESPN Bristol problem, the TV crew has delivered a nice technical show. The big jib camera over pit road is nice.

Anonymous said...

it truly is a shame that DJ and Mr. Petree sound more excited doing a recap or explaining what's going on that Dr. Jerry does all race :(....well except for commercials and such

the shot i particularly like is head-on down that long straightaway.

#88 says he wants the #20 to move cars out of the way so they can get to the front! glad they're keeping a sense of humor thru all this.
