Afternoon NASCAR TV On SPEED

There is going to be quite an interesting mix of TV programs on SPEED Saturday afternoon. It begins with one of the most controversial TV guests in the network's history.

Bob Pockrass of scenedaily.com is the absolute opposite of Kyle Petty. As these two face-off on Tradin' Paint at 3:30PM the network puts host John Roberts in between them. Last season, Petty said Pockrass spends his time "blowing smoke up people's butts" and at a recent Stewart-Haas news conference, Stewart said to Pockrass "what have you been smoking?"

Like the kid in high school that annoys you until you blow-up, Pockrass has the ability on TV to push Kyle Petty's buttons. This week the topics on the menu may do just that. The JGR cheating, the Toyota horsepower, the 2009 schedules and Kyle's recent comments about NASCAR radio broadcasts might be up for discussion.

Petty gets a lot of credit for hanging-in on this show once he replaced Michael Waltrip last season. It is the only NASCAR TV show that takes on substantive topics and uses members of the NASCAR Media who are not regularly seen on TV as panelists.

Following next at 4PM is NASCAR Performance with Larry McReynolds hosting. Chad Knaus and Bootie Barker, two crew chiefs who have been known to push the limits of the rule book, are his regular panelists. McReynolds has made this program into a nice little franchise that is often more informative than many other NASCAR TV shows. From JGR's magnets to the best Bristol set-up to potential tire troubles, it should be a good show.

TV veteran Randy Pemberton has taken over NASCAR in a Hurry and added his own personality to the show. At 4:30PM he recaps the Bristol action from the arrival of the teams to the present moment using footage shot during the weekend. It is a nice way to get up-to-speed in well...a hurry.

At 5PM the franchise comes strolling in as NASCAR RaceDay takes to the air for two sold hours of pre-race television. Host John Roberts and panelists Jimmy Spencer and Kenny Wallace are well-known by now for this popular program.

This week, the list of live guests is long. Carl Edwards, Jeff Burton, Clint Bowyer, Aric Almirola, David Reutimann and David Ragan will be on the show. The network will have two stages as they have done in the past. One will be outside the track, and one in the infield. Wendy Venturini's Real Deal will be a profile of the Morgan McClure race team as the #4 has recently been in the news with Tony Stewart.

Kyle says the #18 and #20 Nationwide teams should have been DQ'ed for the rest of the season.

Yes and that would certainly make everyone sit up!

What were those jets going over - was this recorded yesterday?

Daly Planet Editor said...

Rehearsing the fly-over mary. Yes, the show was recorded but this week I do not know exactly when.

Anonymous said...

It was recorded last night, maybe last nights flyover? Or todays flyover practice?

Kyle is insane to think any team would be DQ'd for rest of season, sponsors would leave NA$CAR in droves. Kyle has gently hated on Yotas since their arrival, he was really talking out the side of his head on that one. As a former owner he should know its never gonna happen.

NP is showing the dashboard w/the new gauges. Fascinating!!

Adam in for Randy this week on NASCAR in a Hurry.

Tradin Paint was taped last night right before the Nationwide Race. They had to start the last segment over twice because the planes flew over 5 times.

Anyone hear what those fans said at the start of RaceDay?

Daly Planet Editor said...

Can't even see the fans behind the set...

Like the gauges demo on NP, now I know what JR was talking about when he said his gauge was back to blue. Cool. Couls use one in my car I tend to be a little heavy footed :)

That's not necessarily a bad thing but I wonder why they are so high. Must be a space issue.

I had to do my errands so I didn't get back until the end of NP but I'll check my recordings :). Look forward to seeing the shows and what the boyz had to say :)

I enjoy Randy and am glad he's part of the SPEED family :). Adam is a great addition as well...I think folks liked them from the gate so that's always a good sign :)

JD--If this is OT sorry :(....do you know what is the determining factor for SPEED to hold a news conference? I noticed on the crawler that they're airing Coach's conference during the last hour of the Pick 'em Up replay on Monday but didn't air Mr. Childress' today. If the rumors come true Coach's like Mr. Childress' won't be a surprise. But I'm curious as to what determines that Joe Blow's is worthy of interrupting or pre-empting scheduled shows and John Smith's isn't? 99% of the time none are a "surprise" due to the various rumors out there but I still don't understand why some are covered and some aren't.

Wow Jimmy says that Tylenol cures a temper..guess I'll start using them with my kids!

I think if Speed aired the press conference they have to use the same crew for that and Raceday. Raceday takes a lot to do so I think it is a matter of resources.

I love the fact that an active Cup driver/owner like Kyle Petty isn't afraid to go on television and be very honest about what he thinks, even if it means throwing NASCAR or his fellow Cup drivers and teams under the bus. His comments about Joe Gibbs Racing getting off easy (which I totally agree with by the way) and Denny Hamlin's attitude were hardly "politically correct" that's for sure.

I don't always agree with him (the Randy Pemberton radio vs. TV coverage discussion comes to mind) but I definitely admire the fact that he's not afraid to openly and honestly talk about his fellow competitors while still being an active participant in the sport. I just hope that we never see a Dodge or Wells Fargo PR guy decide to "get in his ear" at some point and try to tone him down. Very enjoyable show today from my perspective.

The amount of time RC was on Trackside yesterday was better than any press conference at 4pm today. What Nascar fan did not know what was going to be announced???!!!!

Daly Planet Editor said...

Did you guys see the fan with the "used magnets for sale" sign!!

Anonymous said...

@5:20--yes as I stated there wasn't anything announced that we didn't know. But I was using Mr. Childress as an example (pretending he wasn't on Trackside yesterday) of the zillions who have had press conferences and never aired. When Smoke did his the other week some were confused because we all knew (short of an 11th hour change) that Ryan was going to be the driver but they didn't have all their sponsor information lined up. Some felt they should have waited until they had the sponsor information lined up. Just wondering what is "news" enough to bring SPEED to air a press conference. I know Mikey has had press conferences and I can't recall one of them airing on SPEED and Mikey's been on every SPEED show since the beginning of time.

@JD--yes I saw that...I did have to giggle over that :)

Used magnets Too funny. Isn't Wendy's husband an engine tuner at JGR?

Daly Planet Editor said...

Yep, he has worked there for a while now and that is a nice combination for her.

Great family all around that young lady, her parents are hilarious.

JD, just so you know: TSN is not showing the ESPN NASCAR Countdown show. They're showing Olympics coverage right up to 8:00. It's not on TSN-AF either, since they have the IRL race on (which starts at 5:30).

At least they're showing the race on the main network. It's too bad though, I hope that there's no breaking news between RaceDay going off the air at 7:00 and TSN starting their coverage at 8:00.

That Ken Squire Bristol piece was cool.

kbaskins said...

Oops, my mistake, the IRL is on Sunday, not today. So I guess TSN is just totally ignoring the Countdown broadcast, just 'cause they can.

I hate TSN.

I love it when Ken Squire does a history piece ... Hope he does one on each of the old tracks that are left.

Geeze said...

newracefan.

I liked that as well. He always does good feature's.

Anonymous said...

wow! 2 historical pieces: bristol and morgan-mcclure. very nice. it's pieces like these being in the pre-race show that make me tune in, keep it on mute, and then only turn it up when the footage comes on.

what an absolutely wonderful tribute to morgan-mcclure! those guys have earned and deserve some sponsors to step up and get them back on the track! all that history, all those great drivers, all that committment to the sport and the place -- amazing.

hope it happens for them and i'm pleased that stewart-haas racing did the right thing when they found out morgan-mcclure still wanted that #4! good luck, gentlemen: let's hope this segment raises your visibility and gets that phone ringing!

Very Good work on the history of MorganMcClure & the history.Good job on the interviews.

I don't usually agree w Jimmy Spencer, but this time I do. Single car teams are in the history of the sport. After hearing Hermie explain how the costs affect performance & vise versa it really helped me understand what happened w/MMM.

stricklinfan82 said...

Very nice piece on Morgan-McClure Motorsports. I think they've suffered a lot from the old saying "out of sight, out of mind". Hopefully this TV exposure will prompt some investor(s) and sponsor(s) to step up and help them, though I fear that Jimmy and Hermie might be right that it might be asking too much at this point.

I enjoyed Tradin' Paint and NASCAR performance. Watching bits and pieces of RaceDay.

Nice change in RaceDay. Last week, they were all hype and even ran onto the stage.

This week, a couple of good features and a lot of interviews.

Bruton is always interesting. Nice shirt.

There is now a new post up for the Sprint Cup Series coverage on ESPN tonight. Thanks.

I really enjoyed watching Race Day. It was nice to see them set up on pit road and without all of the fans yelling and waving their 'hi, mom!' signs all over the place. Plus it was downright fun and that's what it should be.

Sophia said...

Wish I would've watched Race Day...am no fan of them hyping themselves and annoying fan with HUGE WAVING signs making me dizzy and folks waving at tv...or talking on cell phones.

How about a Race Day for mature viewers...well, mostly. Seems I missed a good episode. Figures.

Not watching Raceday in total(just to much prerace stuff). And watched when the audio caught my attention. Two things that I did enjoy were NO SIGNS in the backround which enabled me to enjoy the show with no fans and the silly signs in the backround (I want to watch raceday not the fans). And the wonderful but heart wrenching segment on Morgan-McClure Motorsports(MMM) with Wendy in the Real Deal segment.
