ESPN at MIS: Sunday TV Schedule

It will be NASCAR Now that opens the Sunday NASCAR coverage for the ESPN family of networks from Michigan International Speedway. Nicole Manske or Ryan Burr will be hosting this hour on ESPN2 at 10AM ET that will include live reports from MIS and updates on the news stories of the week.

Things shift over to ESPN at 1PM when Allen Bestwick hosts a one hour edition of NASCAR Countdown. This pre-race show has been working very well for the network as Bestwick is joined by Rusty Wallace and Brad Daugherty. Included in this program will be ESPN's Lead NASCAR Analyst Dale Jarrett and his announcing partner Andy Petree.

At 2PM Bestwick will hand-off to Jerry Punch for coverage of the race itself. Down on pit road will be the network's regular corp of reporters. Jamie Little, Shannon Spake, Dave Burns and Mike Massaro have been working pit road all season-long for the Nationwide races and now handle the Sprint Cup duties as well.

This race has often come down to fuel mileage and placed a premium on good pit stops and strategy from the crew chiefs. ESPN should have some good storylines as the COT cars work long green flag periods and try to avoid trouble.

Due to some programming commitments, the outstanding wrap-up version of NASCAR Now will not be on the air until 1AM ET Monday morning. Normally seen Sunday at 10PM, this show was a very nice way to get all the late stories and updates after the live race coverage was off the air. Since the NHRA precedes this show, fans who are going to record it should set some extra time in case the NHRA runs long.

ESPN was not involved in the practice or qualifying coverage for either the Nationwide or Sprint Cup Series at MIS. The network team is strictly there for the pre-race show and the race. Perhaps, this will allow for a greater focus on the actual stories of the entire field and let Punch keep the energy level high for the race itself.

With college football and the NFL right around the corner, it should be interesting to see how many promos sneak into the coverage. Bestwick and company were used very sparingly during the Saturday Nationwide Series race, keep an eye on how this trio is used on Sunday during the longer event. Transitions usually occur after a commercial when Bestwick handles either a recap or just gives the guys in the booth a bit of a break.

ESPN has been making great pictures and the in-car cameras from MIS are often spectacular when combined with the fixed "speed shots" that convey to the viewer the incredible speeds on this big superspeedway. With drivers touching 200mph going into the corners, keeping this "speed perspective" is going to be important.

When the race coverage is done, ESPNEWS will be covering the press conference from the Infield Media Center with the top three drivers, the winning crew chief and owner. This is either done live or on a short delay.

This post will serve to host your comments on the Sunday TV coverage from MIS on ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPNEWS. Oh it took them 2 laps for JG and our thru the field got to one car because of the caution. Perhaps if they started it a long time ago

re the booth out of commerical:

Doc, DJ and Andy were whispering amongst themselves trying to figure out who had passed who for what, I just thought it was funny to hear the confusion live.

Vicky D said...

There's so much chatter in the booth but not about the guys running midpack. Very poor coverage.

ri88girl: boy, do i agree about hmiel! he was very, very good for dale and dale never got mouthy with him! hasn't been a spotter who could handle dale like steve h! unfortumately, a large part of what drives dale is having family and friends around him, even if they're not always the best ones for the position.

(hey! we just heard about tony! i didn't know he was still in the race.)

Daly Planet Editor said...

ri88,

That moment really told the tale. Wonder if they were watching something else on TV? They sure did not know who was where...

JD,

WOW! Thanks...the race is much better than being reported!! surprise

@red--agreed! I miss DJC too :(. And unless I was sleeping I don't think we even saw a pit stop by "Animal" :(. I don't know why they go through the whole thing if they're not going to show the team featured. Yes I understand if they were knocked out before a pit stop but I thought Blaney did at least one pit stop :(

And the award for most overused novelty camera is...

The Helmet-Cam on Kyle Busch's Tire Carrier!

It was interesting the first time. Redundant the second time. Made me sea sick watching the third time.

30 laps to go, I bet they can get it in one more time.

Vicky D said...

That's why I have to have nascar.com's live leaderboard up during the race just to know what's going on with the guys in mid to back of the pack. The pit reporters are doing a poor job too. I guess it was convenient for Nascar to have a debris caution so maybe we won't have a fuel strategy race.

Anonymous said...

well, that was really useless audio at the restart. is this their version of "crank it up"?

bevo said...

As much as I like DJ and AP I can't toggle on the ESPN sound anymore. Going to stick with the HotPass commentary for the rest of the ESPN run.

I have been in and out of the kitchen in the last few minutes and reading here to "Find out what is going on since ESPN is USELESS' but I thought I saw the 'animal cam' earlier.

I agree about those cams making one seasick. :)

I have a tape in and not paying close attention at this time.

I can tell you now I am pretty sure I am skipping Bristol next week..and I doubt if I will tape it. Just read here and watch highlights on SR and VL.

NOT the first time I have done this this season.

Last year I would never miss a race ever!!
:(

I am SICK OF THE CHASE and it hasn't even started.

I haven't heard so many bubbles since Lawrence Welk was on !!

Sorry Jeff Gordon done for the day

JJ spotter screaming 3 wide at least 5 times since the 2 spin and we're seeing single file racing

Espn should use this style of Broadcasting during practice and qualifying.

Newracefan said...

Charlie excellent idea and then let someone else do PXP for the race

Vicky D said...

I wonder if the debris is Carl's water bottle?

Anonymous said...

sure hope we see that debris which just bunched it all up again . . . especially since the 18 may be having tire trouble. just saw the truck -- but not what they picked up.

Anonymous said...

What happened to showing us the debris ??

Anonymous said...

look to me like the 99 was speeding

Riggs got the lucky dog

Newracefan said...

9 back on the track, didn't know you could come back from losing a cylinder

Daly Planet Editor said...

That's what Spencer said on RaceDay. He wanted a "debris" caution to bunch up the field and let them race to the finish.

That would take away the gas mileage thing and make the race exciting for TV.

Hmmmm....

2 spin, Good Hands moment.

Anonymous said...

Thanks for the clarification! I might have been changing out laundry at that time but thought I was watching during the pit stops...I'll have to check the DVR recording later :)

Poor Jr. :(

Daly Planet Editor said...

Wonder if it was the camera that ripped the side of the car open?

you are all seem pretty worried about these sales items. who cares? I view them as fluf the production team just needs to get out of the way.

2 spin, Good Hands moment.

nope, sorry, already did that today with more than half the race to run. have to get it out of the way early . . .

Anonymous said...

Karen,
agree 100%! is it just me or should it really BE a good hands kind of call?

Daly Planet Editor said...

Be interesting to see if they show the debris...look like a camera?

bevo said...

This debris is from Jr's car = Harvick channel

Vicky D said...

Lots of shots of Jr's car today. I'm wondering if any of the NON-chasers will finish in the top 10 and ESPN won't show them. Too many debris cautions and them not showing it to us. Maybe JJ will win the race now - they are making such a big deal of him getting back on the lead lap.

Wonder if it was the camera that ripped the side of the car open?

hey, jd, can you explain that? i didn't think the 88 hit the wall hard enough to have the camera come into play. how are the cameras mounted? are they recessed into the wall?

Anonymous said...

Why isn't ESPN showing the debris??

Charlie said...

debris caution. Now if they can keep the cars out and not throw the green flag until 10 to go we will have a single file start.

Newracefan said...

JJ pointing out debris to Nascar guess they found it and agreed with him. WOW lap 188 Mikey got a mention but still none for Reut and he's been running great.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Anon 4:54PM,

Normally, they would put them into the post-race show but that has changed this season.

They just slam them in where ever and often times they make no sense. Like the Edwards left turn around the accident.

Thats simple - it would be too much like reporting, or following the race

I will get a picture. Like a small flashlight.

Today's coverage is, as usual for ESPN, horrible. There's lots of 3 & 4 wide racing further back in the field but the t.v. viewers wouldn't know this. Those of us that are utilizing TrackPass and/or MRN know about it, though.

I will have a column up at 5:30PM for your comments on the race. ESPNEWS will have the post-race press conference.

Bestwick, Massaro, Evernham and Craven on Monday's NASCAR Now.

Byrnes, Waltrip and Knaus on TWIN.

NASCAR Now tonight at 1AM ET/10PM PT.

How frustrating was the camera on the last couple of laps that it was focused only on the top 2 cars when it could have zoomed out a bit and gotten the top 10 racing. It's not like the cars were strung out - they just re-started from a caution. We could have seen some great LIVE racing like the 26 getting around the 20 and 31 at the last minute and the 48 wrecking. It was pretty clear the 18 wasnt going to catch the 99 after the re-start so they should have changed shots so we could see the great last lap racing!

Anonymous said...

15 minutes to kill? thats easy, leave 7 minutes early for sports center!

Daly Planet Editor said...

Six minutes early off the air for SportsCenter.....incredible....

alex said...

How big of a burden is it for them to keep it going until 5:30? Seriously, let's have 6 more minutes of postrace and end at the scheduled time instead of early sportscenter.

Anonymous said...

Are my clocks broken? Mine all say there are 7 minutes in the TV window :(

Anonymous said...

Lazy, lazy, lazy, dumping out with seven minutes to the bottom of the hour.

But, then, that's been ESPN's defining characteristic in coevring NASCAR: Laziness.

Anonymous said...

so, today they seemed to be looking forward to bristol. what will they be looking forward to at bristol?

and here's sports center 5 minutes before the bottom of the hour. guess we couldn't fill those last 5 minutes with nascar, huh?

Newracefan said...

Can you believe it? Time ti kill and no top 35. I quit I will not watch Sports Center for the rest of my post race info. This just sucks

Charlie said...

6 minutes left to go on the scheduled time for the race and we have to rush off early to give Sports Center the extra 6 minutes.
Not sure why.

alex said...

If we didn't have the red flag at Watkins Glen last week, that would have been a lot more than 6 minutes.

Dot said...

I just got here. It is now 2:26pm and we couldn't get the whole 15 mins left after the checkers for post race cov? Good going ESPN.

Vicky D said...

ESPN doesn't give Nascar any respect but I guess you could tell by the broadcast and off to SC early. And I never saw SC guy today either.

Anonymous said...

but here's one good thing about espn cutting out 5 minutes early: jd might get the post-race column up 5 minutes early!!

it is to laugh. . .

yeppers. there's a fine line to be walked when being interviewed immeidately after blowing up but a mature driver wouldn't have done that to his team. it's insulting to the hard work done by everyone on that team, both at the track and back at the shop.

i could hope coach or jd would pull him aside on monday and explain the ramifications of his words. maybe a "come to jesus meeting" between driver and team like they did with tony is in order for young mr hamlin. it ain't all about him -- or any driver. it's about the team and you just don't throw them under the bus on national tv like that. they can't defend themselves or even speak for themselves at all.

tacky, just tacky.

bevo said...

gymmie-

Denny ought to remember the old saw "the people you meet on your way up are the same ones you meet on your way down"

Team owners and sponsors watch post-race interviews

Anonymous said...

agreed red & bevo! It's truly an embarrassment all around! The guys work hard and do their best and they beat themselves up enough if something blows or breaks on the car or a misstep on a pit stop. They don't need their driver on TV adding salt to their wounds.

That article from a few weeks ago of him "complaining" about gas prices for his personal vehicle trying to show how he "understands" how how it is for a race fan just left a bad taste in my mouth. Even after you account for his personal expenses (airplane, drivers, attorney, accountant, etc.) he still has *more* in a month than the average person makes in a year. And that $80 fill up is not hurting him the same as your average American who is lucky to make $24-36K a year.

Anonymous said...

Denny throws his entire team and co-workers under the bus multiple times a year ... It's old hat for him and Joe/JD do NOT seem to give a monkey's red hiney about it ... Had they been smart, they would've seriously nipped it in the bud the first time he did it ...
