Here We Go: Sprint Cup Series In Richmond On ESPN

What a weekend! After all the shuffling, the sport has emerged with a doubleheader on one day and lots of TV shows making big changes.

UPDATE: ESPN2 is on-the-air now with an unannounced version of NASCAR Countdown before the Cup race on ESPN. This last-minute addition might be a result of ESPN realizing that SPEED and RaceDay are enjoying a two-hour live program that is serving to preview the ESPN race.

Race coverage will start on ESPN at 1PM. The green flag will be shortly after that because of the doubleheader schedule. It will be Dr. Jerry Punch, Dale Jarrett and Andy Petree in the announce booth for ESPN.

Handling the duties from the Infield Pit Studio will be host Allen Bestwick and analysts Rusty Wallace and Brad Daugherty. ESPN will have four pit road reporters in Jamie Little, Shannon Spake, Dave Burns and Mike Massaro. Tim Brewer will be on-site in the Tech Center.

After all the changes from ABC to ESPN and the weather issues, it should be interesting to see how the TV crew reacts. The entire TV crew has been on-scene for days. Setting-up with bad weather, coming back to the track in the storm to keep things in one piece and now putting in an incredibly long day today should be a challenge that will either bond the team or make for short tempers quickly.

Once things get back on track, we will all be watching ESPN try to walk the fine line of The Chase vs. the race. This choice will be constant in both the race commentary and the pit road interviews. By the time the race is over, the pit road reporters might play a big role in determining what kind of information gets to the fans.

Short laps and green flag racing makes it tough to sneak-in Tim Brewer and his updates unless two video boxes are used on the screen. It also makes it tough to put the infield crew on-camera unless the field is under caution. These should be two elements to keep an eye on as the race progresses.

The final lap should also be interesting. One group of cars will be trying to win the race and another group will be trying to make The Chase. How this final lap is covered will be interesting. This season ESPN has been doing an outstanding job of showing the field race to the line and this track has a great camera angle that can provide fans a good view of the action.

This post will serve to host your comments about the ESPN coverage of the Sprint Cup Series from Richmond. To add your TV-related comment, just click on the COMMENTS button below and follow the easy instructions. The rules for posting are located on the right side of the main page. Thanks for taking the time to stop by The Daly Planet.

I bet it kills them when they have to say that Reut is the race leader, and not a chosen one.

What was the update on MW? I Mised it...prepping marinade for dinner and doing stuff.

YOU GUYS inform me better than the race.

PUNCH needds to "LISTEN" to the SPEED guys on F1 today..last 5 laps alone those guys are a BLAST with their simultaneous "Oh, no's! Woooooooo". And they are calling the race from across the ocean?

What is the deal with Punch :(

Thank you New Race Fan but the link did not work. Wish we had PM's to send complete links..oh, well...I don't have the patience for this today anyway.

after the guys so excited for F1 race, Punch and the pit road folks are hard to take aren't they?

Oh, I loved whoever called Shrub "WEED" earlier....

My new nikname for him...as weeds in the garden are on irritant...thus.... :)

wouldn't it be nice to see Reut win?

Absolutely.

Newracefan said...

You think those pit reporters even know what the scanner numbers are for some of these cars up in the front right now?

Illpolo said...

JD, one thing that Raceview has allowed me to see is how much racing is going on all over the track. It's dramatic to see 7-8 cars all going around the turn at the same time and to see how each driver gains or loses a position just based on how much/little they brake or what line they took on each lap.

And then there is ESPN. Real close camera shots that zoom in when they hit the corner and barely show any racing.

Just about any avenue other than ESPN seems to know how to follow the race except for them.

Anonymous said...

...the "curvature" of the pits doesn't allow triple pit stops? I'm sorry, but what are you smoking?

Anonymous said...

hey jd, if things are getting tense now, wonder how the n'wide race broadcast will go later tonight?

(also, can you follow-up on your earlier comment about the home depot commercial? please see my question at 2:50. thanks.)

Dot said...

Soph, that was me. I stole it from someone else. No plagerism for me.

now THAT is marquee-worthy right there! subtle, assumes a level of knowledge and funny! excellent!!

Anonymous said...

Anyone else notice the fire damage on the right side of the 44? Possible too rich mixture in the engine? Would be nice if they would explain....

Haus14 said...

Another question (hopefully someonwe has an answer to this one) Did they say what happeend to Boyer? He was running in top 10 all day. Now he is 25 and currently out of the chase.

bevo said...

This is absurd. Plenty of racing and drama out there and this is what they come up with? They finally get some action with Shrub and drop the ball. Lots of passing and battling for position but they choose not to show it.

And once again the through the field wastes time with non-race stuff. We don't need essays on each driver.

Dot said...

Reut is too far out. I smell a debris caution.

Sophia said...

Well, I gotta go check some things.

The sound of crickets chirping around Punch are unreal.

Will try Raceview again maybe. Will check the blog soon to "see what happens since ESPU will not" tell us.

Thanks to ALL who multi-task and SHARE other info from other sources. Makes this blog the best!!

If EVER AB was needed to HELP SAVE THE BOOTH, this Chase is it..imo.

Haus14 said...

Thanks AB & Shannon...glad you are reading this.

"Anyone else notice the fire damage on the right side of the 44? Possible too rich mixture in the engine? Would be nice if they would explain..."

yeah, i wondered that, too. i haven't seen him flaming but it may be b/c they aren't getting the camera angle to show it.

Newracefan said...

AB all kinds of info and strategy, pitches it to JP something bland. Sorry AB I know your trying

Dot said...

#83 is the debris. Got the call from the tower.

Anonymous said...

Now Petree has to correct Punch. JP says Schrader trying to avoid going another lap down to Reutimann. Immediately, Petree jumps in to say he's actually on the lead lap.

Pay attention Jerry! I know he's not a "scripted" or "Chase" driver but he's still competing like everyone else.

And why is Vickers hitting the wall such a ho hum thing? How about excitement in calling a race please?

Anonymous said...

AFLAC Trivia Question:

Who was the last NASCAR pit reporter promoted to the booth that fell on his face in his new role?

Daly Planet Editor said...

100 laps left and Punch is done.

Anonymous said...

Doc is back to repeating car numbers and drivers names like we haven't been watching for 300 laps.

He needs to stop talking. His comments are distracting, and put DJ and Andy off thier game. If there is tention in the booth, why don't DJ and Andy just do us a favor and ignore Doc and just call the race letting AB handle stragies.

The reports from the pits are unintellagable or rambeling nothings from Shannon and Jamie.

Oh Andy mentioned the lucky dog wow!

Daly Planet Editor said...

Man, the pit coverage is horrible. We even missed the race off...

Anonymous said...

hey dot? you psychic or somethin'? i am impressed with your "Reut is too far out. I smell a debris caution" at 3:26! and it wasn't even a nascar caution: a car actually tagged the wall! impressive.

Kenn Fong said...

J.D.,

Hate to say it, but Jerry Bonkowski and Bob Margolis are doing a better job of calling this race than Dr. Jerry in their Live Analysis on Yahoo.com. [http://sports.yahoo.com/nascar/sprint/races/18/raceflasharchive?year=2008]

Ditto Phil Parsons on the Junior channel on Hot Pass.

They act like this isn't even a live race where things frequently change. What happened to a play-by-play guy actually calling the action. All they do is focus on one driver by saying "HOW ABOUT so and so..." and then go into a biography of the driver and possibly a pit crew reporter telling us a story.

I'd like to hear how they are driving, the lines they are taking, etc.

Raceview even shows things like Jeff Gordon swiped the wall in Turn 2 before the last caution, but this crew hasn't even mentioned the 24 since early in the race.

WOW glad you're here!

alex said...

JD,

You mean 350 laps left and punch is done? Nationwide race should be interesting...

Vicky D said...

Been out so just checking in with the race and a bunch of my favorites having problems today. Lots of posts. Richmond is a great track.

Anonymous said...

To those asking about the flames out the exhaust on the right side...when they come off the gas, there's usually some fuel left that passes through to the exhaust pipes and that's what you see burning off...has nothing to do with too rich or lean of a fuel mixture. You'll see it from most cars at one time or the other - at night it's pretty cool.

Anonymous said...

Will some one from espn please give Doc his blankie so he can nap?

He sounds tired, has no clue is lifeless unless going to promo - doesnot know what is going on, is not following the race or conversation.

Dot said...

Red,
I wish I were. I'd be a big winner at the roulette wheel.

Anonymous said...

did i actually hear someone say that the 77 car received a "pass thru penalty" after his tire came off the car right there? perhaps they meant he had to go back to his pit -- to get a fourth tire put on his car???? or was that a penalty for taking equipment out of the box?

Anonymous said...

Jerry....there is no way on God's green earth that Kyle Busch can come back from a lap down and win this race...I don't care how good his car is. Give it up, Jerry. No story there. Find something else...like where is Dale, Jr.

Sophia said...

Hey

Is RACEVIEW "ANIMATION" or actual video?

Just tried to load that 10 more times and got to a sample demo...it looks like cartoons????

I thought it was going to be like Race Buddy.

Vickers gets a penalty and we are being told...I am faint...I need chocolate.

But if Raceview is 'animation' never mind.

Oh, by the way, that "CARS" movie was ADORABLE and had a sweet story..nice surprise...I Totally enjoyed it.

Anonymous said...

petree says "we've seen these guys racing alot in this last part of the race . . ." sure wish WE could have seen that.

Anonymous said...

ANOTHER useless ticker the Manufacturer ticker OMG How DUMB!!!!!

Anonymous said...

Too much air time going to who's in the 12th and 13th position...it makes no difference to anyone until the race is over. One more thing Jerry just needs to give up on.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Punch said absolutely NOTHING during that accident! I might just turn down the sound I swear...

Anonymous said...

wait, wait! how is getting the lucky dog "getting it back the old-fashioned way?" did i misunderstand that comment about the #18 getting back on the lead lap just now?

Anonymous said...

We just have a wreck involving three cars, including Edwards and Labonte, and all the booth cares about is Kyle Busch getting the lucky dog.

They just can't get away from the script to root for a guy in 33rd place.

The booth had no clue what happened there. Are they even broadcasting from the racetrack?

Newracefan said...

I think DJ is looking out the window, he knew which cars were in the wreck before the smoke cleared.

Anonymous said...

Red
he was talking about JPM

Sophia said...

You know....I hate to say this..but Jerry Punch reminds me of that old movie "Weekend at Bernies".

If y'all remember that movie, they dragged around a lifeless body and tried to pass him off as alive. I don't say that to be CRUEL but it's a tongue in cheek analogy of the booth.

I want SOMEBODY to explain how this dear man is keeping a job in a position he is OBVIOUSLY ill-suite.

Shame

Anonymous said...

"Newracefan said...

DJ, had better beware, he could lose his job doing that.

Anonymous said...

NRF: SHHHH.. If the producers see this, they'll pull down the window shades to maintain the integrity of the script. :)

Anonymous said...

JD, I think and I know you're thinking that Jerry didn't say anything during that wreck because he was watching the monitor and the camera was behind the wreck, so he had to wait for the smoke to clear before he could say who it was!!!

Dot said...

Soph & Village Idiot,

Welcome to the comedy tour.

Anonymous said...

hey, terri? back to the lean/rich mixture and flaming. altho' we know that most cars flame thru out a race, i had understood that when we see that much scorching on the right side of a car, it indicates that too much unburned fuel is hitting the pipes? what say you?

Anonymous said...

RV scanner keeps messing up and giving me random drivers when I have it on 88. Hope this is just a glitch for today. It's happening on regular scanner from Pitcommand too. Very annoying.

Sophia said...

Do we have evidence JP is AT the track?
The comments here are astonishing.

Indy race is on for anybody interesting or channel surfing like some of us. I just remembered.

How many of you are watching NFL?
sigh. Off to make a cake.

Anonymous said...

Punch: "We thought Mark Martin might have a fast car today" (said as if Martin was struggling)

Petree: "Well he's in the Top 5!"

"Red

thanks! i was changing screens and became confused. of course, the fact that i even thought they MIGHT have said something so wrong says something about the broadcast to me. thanks again!

alex said...

I'm watching NFL. Brought 2 more TVs in the room from around the house so I can watch the race and 2 football games at the same time without having to channel surf. (And MRN on the radio)... Yes, I'm a sports nut.

Anonymous said...

ATTN espn booth
OK when was the last time ANY racer " gave up" ???

These guys on the track ain't quitters. Please stop.

Anonymous said...

sophia--it's animation. It's "video" of the actual cars so what you see is their actual positions on the track and what you'd see if you were following them in car, but the view you see is animation similar to a video game

Goodness...going back to finish my dinner prep...

JD--can you ask Rusty to send some of that 5 hour energy stuff over to Jerry :)...maybe that and the suggested nap will make the N'wide race more bearable :(

Dot said...

I really hope that Reut wins. That would really put a wrench in the script.

Anonymous said...

A bunch of action and crucial racing between 6 & 07.....

Split Screen would be very nice for the closing laps.

Anonymous said...

red, I'd say if the car is keeping its position in the race and not falling back - no harm, no foul and don't sweat it!!!!

Anonymous said...

Final transfer spot????

Give Doc some warm milk & let him sleep. Andy DJ let him sleep....

Anonymous said...

terri; sure doesn't seem to be hurting that 44 car any, is it?!? guess "conventional wisdom" just fell flat on its face!

Anonymous said...

...or get some better paint that can take the heat!!!

Newracefan said...

Know I know DJ's looking out the window, he's talking about lines the cars are running on the track.

smoke from Smoke and no one says a word...must not be seeing it on the monitor... I know it's probably just a rub, but it's from the car in 2nd position and mention would be nice.

I would love to see Reut do well.

bevo said...

Any mention of Mears or McDowell? Mears not driving like a lame duck and McDowell way up there after being out of the car for a few races.

Newracefan said...

I wish JP wouldn't call all the walls concrete it's safer barrier or let us know it's where the safer barrier isn't

Vicky D said...

It is beyond ESPN's wildest dreams that a car outside of the chase could possibly win this race. Go Reut!

Haus14 said...

Terri. It has been there all day..they have covered it on hot pass. It doesn't seem to be a big deal. It would be nice for the "crew" to at least mention it to those unfortunate enough to have to listen to them.

Dot said...

Weed is 17th. Unbelieveable. Surprised they're not calling him the potential race winner.

Daly Planet Editor said...

teri,

I was just thinking the same thing. This is exactly the type of race action that Tony is famous for and...nothing from Punch.

Thank GOD for DJ and Andy or were would have no clue what is going-on.

Dot said...

Haus14 said...

Uh oh, another odd wad out front.

Anonymous said...

This is the worst pit coverage of the year.

Vicky D said...

Maybe we need Jimmy Kimmel telling us what is going on on pit road, and he could add - and you didn't see it because ESPN chose not to show those cars!

Anonymous said...

Now this stop is when they needed triple pit stops. They cover Reut and Tony, but forget about Jimmie, and he comes out in front of both of them. Good job, ESPN.

Now don't forget to cover Clint's stop!!!!

Anonymous said...

did the #1 car take only 2 tires?

Yes because I have MRN, & Fox trax.

BTW Tony wants his car fixed back like before & was swearing coming off pit road. So much for his happiness.

Anonymous said...

Yes, I had a ticket for the Nationwide race, but RIR sent out a computerized phone call to all ticketholders telling us that if we wanted to be guaranteed to be in our seats at 7pm, we needed to be at the track by 4pm....so with 100K people there for the CUP race, where the heck was I supposed to park at 4pm???

Haus14 said...

Based on what Tony called JJ in the Rollin Stone article, this "could" be very interesting...the obvious factor is that Tony still needs a top 35 or so finish to lock in.

Anonymous said...

Jr cryin' on the radio again?

Daly Planet Editor said...

This is the tough time of the race that I talked about in my column. They have to follow two stories and Punch is not exactly helping.

DJ should get extra pay for this one.

18 laps to go is *not* the time for the sports updates.

Dot said...

I don't think Ragan & Kahne have a shot. Why are they still yellow?

alex said...

It's safe to assume there's a bunch of people with tickets to both races, some maybe even with the same seats. They probably won't be too happy to leave the track.

I remember as a kid baseball doubleheaders for so much fun because we could just hang out in the seats for half an hour between games. Trying to shift over 100,000 people in and out is not going to be fun for anybody.

Anonymous said...

dot - Technically, if Bowyer were to crash...

Actually, it's probably because no-one in the booth cares enough to fix the ticker.

Sophia said...

What was Jr saying about a crybaby? on the scanner.

I was outside for a moment, then a car had a bad fire in IRL but I think the driver is ok..got out on his own but safety gear had him trapped in the car too long.:( All these harness need an immediate release button or something.

Their response time in Indy races is good for fires, THANK GOD.

The tv with NASCAR does not have cc but a great pic.

I did NOT KNOW THIS was the last Indy race of the season.

10 laps to go.

But he was ok on ESPN..guess he got it out of his system....But I am sad if his relationship with ZIPPY is deteriorating...another LOUD ANNOUNCER with Happy...sigh.

Momentum for Harvick? He hasn't won since Daytona 07 right?

All of them are in the chase because they run well all of the time...I would not equate that to momentum.

and before anyone says tony's weaseling out with his post-race interview now: obviously, he's cooled down AND zippy's read him the riot act. given how zippy talked to him at the end there, tony knows he was flat out wrong and he has to suck it up and apologize to his team. a driver should NEVER throw his team under the bus on the radio EVER! his crew chief, certainly but not the team. those guys and gals can't defend themselves on the radio back to them, their voices don't get heard.
i think stewart's an amazing driver but he was wrong in the car big time. so i'm glad he "zipped" it when the post-race interview happened.

(and where is the post-race interviews with busch and earnhardt and edwards?)

oh ,man.... are the the same guys in the booth for NW?

I may skip WEEKEND at Bernie's NASCAR style and watch SR, VL and Wt...and check here.

:)

Thanks for all the information and your work, JD.

Stay dry.

Those grandstands emptied out pretty fast.

They are going in order of CHASE seeds. They started with 14th and have gone down to 5th

Anonymous said...

Junior. Finally.

Anonymous said...

So, they're interviewing all the Chasers. Mark Martin got a fifth place finish, and he doesn't even get a mention from ESPN. Lovely. (Or not.)

Vicky D said...

Yeah no mention of Mark Martin or David Reutimann. Thanks ESPN!

@ Brother,

I noticed the same thing. I wished we could've seen it.

Rats! I MISSED the Jr interview by going outside.

How was he??? Darn, darn, darn

KB took the high road re: Jr wreck.

i apologize to espn: i had assumed we wouldn't hear from the rest of the drivers who made the chase b/c i thought they'd pull away with 15+ minutes left to go. my apologies, espn folks: you got the interviews for us. thank you.

and, even tho' he makes me insane, i have to say that young mr busch did a fine job not shooting his mouth off in his post-race interview. (and i know what earnhardt said but i REALLY thought the #18 came down on the #88 there . . .)

Dr. P. "Everyone believes Jimmy Johnson is the guy to beat."

ahhh did you not just hear DJ say he thinks KB is the guy to beat?

Newracefan said...

Hugh post race especially for ESPN, I'm sufficiently impressed but it would have been nice to hear from Reut

same thing last year nrf

A few things I saw that stuck out:

- Dr. Punch really struggled in the booth and was often silent when incidents occurred (18-88 for one). DJ and Andy each called out a wreck before it appeared on camera so that was good. AB did a great job in the pit studio, including when he clarified the points situation with the 9 and 17 after Kenseth's crash. He answered the burning question (what's the scenario now with Kahne vs. Kenseth?) that should have been handled by the play-by-play man at the time.

- I was stunned when I read here that they aired a last-minute NASCAR Countdown on ESPN2. I didn't see it advertised on ESPN TV networks, espn.com, Jayski, this blog, or anywhere else as of this morning so I completely missed it. Nice job ESPN.

- ESPN completely blew that last round of pit stops. Cutting away from the crucial 48-20 race off pit road that the pit reporter was screaming about in excitement to cut to David Ragan limping onto pit road as the last car on the lead lap. OUCH.

- It would have been nice to hear from Reutimann or other non-Chasers during the extended post-race show. I'm just not a fan of the annual fall Richmond tradition of interviewing all the Chasers and almost-Chasers and ignoring everyone else, regardless of their finish.

Maybe just maybe AB will go to the booth tonight for the Nationwide race? One can only dream.

JD any word on media center coverage from ESPN

Red,
I'm with you. Weed did go low. Jr smoked his brakes. Even though I hate Weed, he was pretty nice in his interview.

Watching ARCA on SPEED... Erin MIGHT repeat might be ok in the booth.

Newracefan said...

thanks Sangel how did you find out?

Vicky D said...

Speedangel thanks for the update I'm sure we would have eventually heard that from ESPN - surely we would have!

NRF,

I use another site (Race2Win.net). They usually put up the results and standings as soon as they're released.

i agree: she's a bit nasal but her observations seem right on and she has the right level of emotion for me: not over the top but not dead in the water. i appreciate hering comments like "he doesn't seem to be timing that too well but maybe he's looking for the draft there."

i'm also channel-hopping over to irl. once again, i'm amazed that the difference between the champion for the season and #2 could be as little as ONE POINT! now THAT'S a chase to behold!

Newracefan said...

thanks Sangel I've got it marked for future because heaven forbid ESPN actually tells me and Robby falling out is huge especially with GEM being po'd at him

I was watching the race on DirectTV Trackpass and after the race Hermie Sadler was interviewing Junior. Hermie asked Junior about the wreck with the 18 and Junior said he locked up the tires, didn't mean to get into him. Then he had that cocky Dale Earnhardt Sr smile and said "Ironic, isn't it), and his blue eyes were just twinkling. Great interview

Hey tonight would have a built in "excuse" to put AB in the booth...PLEEEEEASE?

Lou said...

after the Jet/Dolphn game,I just caught the end of the race on Hotpass. The announce team for the 88 channel did a good job announcing the finish as they talked about the 20 and 48.

The interview by Hermie w/JR was priceless. It was "ironic" for those who watched it. It reminded me of SR with that smile at the end.

I'm not gonna read through over 300 posts...I did kinda skim through the first & last page.

But I was thinking they were doing okay until the 18 wreck. I was in the next room and could barely tell what was going on. All I could think was how it was broadcast on the race in May...a little excitement please? I see you guys commented on that and I agree. What I found most annoying about the second half was that they all kept repeating themselves...the same phrases and all...it was very strange. DJ seemed the most together, and even he repeated himself. I don't think I've ever heard a broadcast where they seemed to struggle so much for something to say.

Watched some of the ARCA race. I thought Erin did okay; I wouldn't be surprised if they asked her again. I didn't think she was nasally, I thought it was more...I want to say 'sing-songy', maybe?...a bit on one level. But mostly what she said was pretty useful, especially for a first timer. Didn't hurt that she was with a pro like Ralph.

IRL race winner spoiler below

I can NOT believe the bad ABC coverage or IRL! THey missed many wrecks including Sarah Fisher where we just saw her car lying flat on the ground, wheels all messed up..the apologized for NOT having a camer on 'that part of the track to show a replay:. HELLO! OVAL race..1 mile..she limped on one foot to the truck.

THis happened MORE THAN ONCE.

Then, THEN They kept saying Scot Dixon was the race winner AND the Indy Champ when a replay clearly showed it was Castroneves!! They kept blathering and interviewing Dixon...then they go to another camera, tell Helio HE WON..we was all excited..and they WENT OFF THE AIR 4 minutes early?!?!

The LAST Indy race of the season. WTH?? Cripes we were ticked.

Can't wait to see the SPEED REPORT.

It is EXACTLY the same treatment ESPN has given NASCAR, especially the NW races. UNREAL.

oh, you could clearly hear HELIO CASTRONEVES being announced on the P.A. while interviewing Dixon as the 'race winner'???

A mess. Hope Versus gets ON more stations and more respect.

And we think it's just NASCAR. ABC?ESPN should not cover car racing.

Y'know, I swear that if Punch threw to Shannon Spake by saying, "So, Shannon, you're not very good at your job are you?" she would STILL start her answer with "Yeah, Jerry..."

Anonymous said...

Here's a tip for Dr. Jerry Punch:

We are 26 races in to the season. Carl Edwards has won a half-dozen races. He is the #2 seed in the Chase. When you are 200 laps into a race, you don't need to say to fans: "There is the 99 car, Carl Edwards!"

First of all: We know that already. We have eyes, too.

Second of all: SAY SOMETHING ELSE. I swear, there was at least a 90-minute section of this Richmond race where all Punch did was call out the numbers he saw. It was like he was announcing the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade: "There's the #9, Kasey Kahne. And there's the 48, Jimmie Johnson."

Seriously, Punch, do you think we need to be told 100 times per race that the 48 is Jimmie Johnson?

I don't know if this is the forum to comment on this, but it is TV-related:

Did anyone else see the Home Depot commercial with Tony Stewart and Joey Logano? It was awesome. If more commercials were this good, I wouldn't skip them.

Also - that commercial contained more storyline than three hours of Jerry Punch calling a race.

Anonymous said...

didn't look through all the posts, but anyone notice that Shannon Spake (I think?) had to tell us Jeff Burton was 41 years old? I mean, how is that relevant to his pit stop?

Vicky D said...

Anon at 7:30. Yes that was a pretty cool commercial except now some skeptics are saying - how many 18 year olds go to Home Depot. I know I never see them in mine here in Spring Branch!

"Anon at 7:30. Yes that was a pretty cool commercial except now some skeptics are saying - how many 18 year olds go to Home Depot. I know I never see them in mine here in Spring Branch!"

they have cleverly masked that reality by never actually showing logano IN a home depot! the commercial works for EXACTLY the reasons we said it would a few weeks ago when we were discussing the jgr press conference. at that time, we speculated about doing a commercial w/stewart taking a mentor position with young mr logano, showing him various tools and how to use them. this new commercial sure looks a whole lot like that -- and young mr logano never crosses the threshold of a home depot. they are using the brand loyalty that stewart has built to create legitimacy for logano.

Why does Dr. P. always have to say, "...and Carl Edwards is being scored as the leader." He is scored as the leader because he is the leader. Just say that. He does it many times each race and it drives me crazy.

And it's amazing how quickly Rusty learned to stop saying "I tell you what" last year, and how many times he says it this year. Yes, you tell me what. Please stop telling me what.

to anonymous at 7:33 PM - I caught that "41 year old Jeff Burton" line in the pit stops. I was hoping to hear "Greg Biffle, who wears a size 10 shoe, is in for two right side tires and a can of Sunoco racing fuel".
