Friday Night Under The Lights on ESPN2

The rain is gone and the racing is about to begin. Friday night brings the NASCAR on ESPN team to the Lowe's Motor Speedway for the Nationwide Series race.

Allen Bestwick and the NASCAR Countdown crew will start the night at 7:30PM. Bestwick will have his regular crew of Brad Daugherty and Rusty Wallace alongside for this thirty minute pre-race show.

At 8PM it will be Dr. Jerry Punch, Dale Jarrett and Andy Petree who will call the Nationwide Series action. Tim Brewer will be along in the Tech Center and Bestwick and company will remain in the Infield Pit Center. Down on pit road will be Jamie Little, Shannon Spake, Dave Burns and Mike Massaro.

There are lots of stories in the Nationwide Series event and several of them cross-over into the Cup Series. Both Kevin Harvick and Carl Edwards will be in the field on Friday night. There will also be the normal storyline of the Nationwide "regulars" led by Brad Keselowski going up against the Cup drivers racing in the event.

This is a fast and tough track for TV. The only pause is on the backstretch and it only lasts a couple of seconds. Talladega, this is not.

This post will serve to host your comments on the Nationwide Series race on ESPN2. To add your TV-related comments, just click on the COMMENTS button below. The rules for posting are located on the right side of the main page. Thanks for taking the time to stop-by.

JD, I just had to comment about the final practice of the cup cars tonight and JP is almost falling asleep. How will he make it through the NW race????

Anonymous said...

JD, we have known for a couple of days that Hamlin decided not the run the Nationwide race tonight. When the car he was supposed to race qualified today, ESPN showed a Denny intro and Dr P (kind of apologizing for the Hamlin intro)explained that Denny was supposed to be in the car, but now Dave Blaney is driving. How could ESPN not have time to change their pre-programmed stuff to be broadcast during qualifying? Just curious whether several days notice is not enough to change up all their pre-programmed pieces or, if not, maybe they just didn't care???

Daly Planet Editor said...

vicky,

As I said in my column, this is a key moment for several TV personalities. At 8PM, there will be lots of primetime eyes on this group and they all better get up on the wheel and bring it home.

JD

Thank you, ESPN, for actually showing the Happy Hour practice!

It was great to watch the cars and to hear the guys in the booth talk about what was happening on the track.

Keep it up!

Daly Planet Editor said...

Anon 7:29PM,

All of that should have been taken care of well in advance by the Producer of the Nationwide Series for ESPN.

Great comment.

JD

Anonymous said...

if not, maybe they just didn't care???

There was plenty of "lead time." It was just sloppy producing.

Vicky D said...

Ok, but how can JP change during this one race. He'd have to drink 10 cups of coffee first!! I'm getting tired of all these sip takes and ESPN interviewing the cup drivers first (so far) however it's only several minutes in so maybe I'm making a mountain of a molehill. I don't give the NW drivers much of a chance tonight either.

majorshouse said...

I do wonder some times if ESPN really does care about NASCAR at all. I still think that NASCAR should find a way to void that contract and go back to either totally TNT or let them share it with FOX like they did several yearsa go because it actually worked.

PammH said...

okay, I'm sorry, but showing some inane shot while they're leaving the air & throwing it to Brad so he can say something absolutely pointless-HAS GOT TO STOP!!! It really brings focus to the fact that Brad has no purpose on this channel, except for diveristy. JMO.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Old Brad has been working it hard tonight.

Dot said...

@ Pammh, I agree with you.

Anonymous said...

still haven't seen a starting lineup for the race

Anonymous said...

Did JP just say Mike Bliss was leading the Nationwide regulars in the point standings? What about Brad?

Nan S said...

Its silly for DJ to talk about Johnson's "commitment" to his sponsor and that's why he is going the extra mile to run this race. Clearly Johnson is contractually obligated to run this race, so quit pretending its something other than a business deal. Why try and turn these guys into Mother Teresa? Its insulting to anyone with a functioning brain.

Anonymous said...

other than the thirty seconds on the kid in the 12 car all other info pretty useless

Dot said...

@ Nan, he's just following the script.

Vicky D said...

In-Race Reporter for a Nationwide race is a chaser! Go figure. I wonder who will get any tv time - maybe Joey & Brad.

Anonymous said...

geez....is there any driver other than a start and parker thats not hungry for a win

Matt said...

I just noticed the huge antennas on the pit reporters' headsets. They kinda look like space creatures.

Anonymous said...

I believe a clear indication of where NASCAR pecks as far as SpoutsCenter is concerned was shown one night earlier this week when introduction of the new, in-house hockey expert took up more time than coverage of Cup races get the night after the race - and the replacement was no where near as entertaining as Barry Melrose.

Dot said...

Wasn't that crash on lap 2? JP is a lap behind.

Anonymous said...

at least stremme got a mention (my wife loves him) good thing for her rusty works for espn

Anonymous said...

Is there a reason ESPN never goes through the lineup like the old days? Instead we get an interview with the in-race reporter with information we already know.

Another thing that annoys me is tonight's pace lap pit reports were all about Cup drivers (Vickers (starts 42nd), Blaney (1st start of season), Bowyer, Kahne (starts 33rd)) What about the Nationwide regulars that are running well? There is a reason the field is getting more start & parks, and it is because of the lack of coverage the Nationwide regulars get. Sponsors go for the people that get on, the Cup drivers. (Sorry for the long post)

Haus14 said...

Well at least DJ is looking out the window

Dot said...

Yea!!!DJ looking out the window.

Karen said...

I could have sworn Jeff Green didn't make the cut for tonight. What did I miss between quals and 8:00 p.m.?

Dot said...

@ Anon 8:25, just wait until they keep talking about the car Hamlin was supposed to drive tonight. Poor Blaney.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Oh Boy...this should be fun.

Anonymous said...

Where did this rain come from? Even the booth is clueless.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Scramble mode....

Dot said...

@ Karen, it was Mark Green who dnq'd.

Dot said...

Mike M, ask Bryan how he's feels?

Anonymous said...

DRAT RAIN!!!!!!

Dot said...

Sorry for the typo, no 's.

Karen said...

Thanks, Dot. I'm easily confused obviously.

Daly Planet Editor said...

It should be Allen Bestwick time shortly...

Dot said...

@ Karen, you're welcome. I looked it up so you wouldn't have too. :)

Vicky D said...

JP the rain is coming from the clouds. I'm glad they are interviewing Bryan Clauson I like that kid. But the story will be where are the chasers running. We could use a field summary, guys.

stricklinfan82 said...

I'm definitely thankful that rain interrupting a Nationwide race is happening on a Friday night race and not on a college football Saturday afternoon. It looks like nothing but re-airs on ESPN2 the rest of the night so I would hope we're okay on the TV side.... if the race finishes tonight anyway. Concluding this race tomorrow morning/afternoon (which I would assume is the backup plan based on past precedence) will definitely be a disaster on the TV side so let's hope it doesn't come to that.

PammH said...

I already had to mute the TV & listen the RCN's broadcast over the web. I've had more info from them in 3 mins than I've had from PU in 37 mins...sad.

Daly Planet Editor said...

pammmmmh,

You mean they did a starting line-up?

JD

Anonymous said...

stricklin there are lights at charlotte. they could wait it out all night!

Anonymous said...

Quick, follow the script & talk about Vickers again. Does ESPN know that he wasn't the only car that wrecked in qualifying? John Wes Townley and DJ Kennington both crashed, but they aren't Cup drivers and can't fit on the script.

Anonymous said...

I thought they did the starting lineup on the top of the screen like 3 times.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Anyone remember when Humpy Wheeler had Bruton Smith throw the switch on the lights for the first time?

That was a good one...

Vicky D said...

Broadcast guys, attention broadcast guys, have the full time Nationwide drivers gone into the garage????

Anon 8:41PM,

What the announcers used to do was go through the field and tell viewers a little bit about how and why each car/team was in the position on the grid.

Sorry, I should have made myself clear.

JD

Anonymous said...

ahhh gottcha on the starting lineup

Anonymous said...

WOW! We got an update on Jeff Green.

PammH said...

JD-they even did a run thru the field, can you imagine?? ;) they mentioned rain about 5 mins before TV.

stricklinfan82 said...

anon@8:39,

I definitely hope NASCAR uses your line of thinking there if rain decides to come back before halfway. I sure would like to see this race on live TV and I just don't see that happening tomorrow on a college football Saturday.

Anyone know if there was another Montreal moment with all the start-and-parks heading to the garage instead of pit road once the red came out?

JD, I do remember the first time they ran Cup cars under the lights at Charlotte (1992, Winston Open). Hut was 2 laps away from victory that night... and I still haven't forgiven Michael Waltrip for taking it away, LOL. Just kidding Michael :)

Dot said...

13 laps in and we get points standings. Good grief.

Anonymous said...

National Weather Service radar shows all clear.Lets Hope.

Haus14 said...

Help in the Draft? Is draft tracker next?

Dot said...

Just caught the end of the ticker, lots of cars already off.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Somebody is reading the comments....lol.

Anonymous said...

Derrike Cope, Terry Cook and Johnny Chapman have all parked.

Karen said...

Am I totally delirious or are they showing racing in the front, the middle of the pack, etc.?

Anonymous said...

JD, I think you're right. Someone must be reading the comments because some Nationwide regulars were on TV and they mentioned who went to the garage!

Daly Planet Editor said...

I know we are on the laptops in the Media Center, but it's nice to sneak into the TV compound office trailer! Got to love freelancers!

Anonymous said...

Well I got home just now & read thru the comments here I'll just start watching from here on - as Hubby said, no need to stress ourselves, they won't mention Brad unless they are forced to.

Dot said...

Hey Jo, there you are.

Haus14 said...

Well if someone is reading this blog, I hope they also have the audio up on the broadcast. Maybe they will realize how boooring the play by play is. Maybe they will also contrast it with the play by play of Rick Allen in the truck races and "see the light." They could also go back and contrast it with AB's calls from yesteryear.

Hopefully this is the beginning of the improvements for the 2009 season.

Daly Planet Editor said...

haus,

As I said in my column, this is crunch time and there are lots of eyes on this group tonight.

Did you know hot Domino's pizza can be delivered during the race both to fans in the stands and to the TV compound?

LMS is a blast.

JD

Dot said...

Am I hearing things? They're really going thru the field?

Anonymous said...

Hi Dot!
Wait is this e$pn doing a thru the field?!? Whoa, whas up here now????

Haus14 said...

We have been given more thorough information about what is going on on the track in the first 50 laps of this race than the last 1,000 laps of ESPN's coverage. ---Even covering a lead change during the through the field. WOW!

BTW...I had the opportunity to be at LMS last May for all-star weekend...My wife and I really enjoyed ourselves.

Anonymous said...

Not only a through the field, but a break for the leader change! Excellent!

Anonymous said...

A through the field from 1-20! What an improvement.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Kick-butt field recap. If only they could go just a little further.

Daly Planet Editor said...

And the lucky dog with a graphic! Nice...

Anonymous said...

E$PN gave us a thru the field & mentioned Chase Miller for Lucky Dog! WOW what a pleasant surprise.

PammH said...

So who actually is in the lucky dog car, Jason Keller or Jason Miller, doc??

Labbie said...

We've seen this before from ESPN, great NW race broadcasst and the same old crap the next day for Cup.

They've got to make it thru tomorrow before I'll be any kind of impressed.

Haus14 said...

Right now I guess I am at the point of "beggars can't be choosy" regarding the through the field. I will take a consistent 1-20 as opposed to Cup Driver only coverage during the NW race.

Dot said...

I hope they are not using themselves up tonight. We need this kind of coverage tomorrow night. Maybe they're getting the hang of it, finally.

stricklinfan82 said...

Solid coverage so far. No pre-taped junk under green, they're looking for racing on the track instead of following a script, and now an Up to Speed on all drivers (not just points contenders). We even got an immediate interview with the only non-points contender that fell out of the race for a reason other than start-and-park disease.

Again though, I'm not going to let tonight get my hopes up for tomorrow. In my opinion the Nationwide broadcasts have been solid for the most part lately. Unfortunately it has never carried over to the Cup broadcasts the next day. I'm certainly hoping this will finally be the weekend when that changes though.

Karen said...

JD,

Why the emphasis on this race in particular or is it from here till the end of the season? Nothing like making us crazy all year just to step it up the last five races?

Anonymous said...

They mentioned pit road the pit road penalty to Kenny Wallace, Bires problem & Stremme's strategy. Maybe they finally figured it out?

Dot said...

@ Karen, Ditto from Dot.

Anonymous said...

They spent nearly 10 laps for that "thru the field" recap.

That was a quarter of the race.

If they are going to spend that much time, please give us a split screen of the leaders or other battles on the track.

I really can't stand the "he said", " he told me", "I spoke to so & so" that we constantly get from these pit reporters.

Spake told us about the potential tire/ vibration troubles on the Leffler car, and then when he finally HAD the trouble, she was never given the chance to follow up on pit road.

If you're going to "tell a story", FINISH IT !!

Daly Planet Editor said...

Karen,

Ever hear the expression "the heat is on?"

With guys like Ray Evernham, Ricky Craven and Randy LaJoie hanging around, it would probably be a good idea for some folks to have a good race weekend.

PammH said...

I agree w/strick. NW race has been okay ~shrug~ but they fall short on the Cup side EVERY time. I just don't understand..

If y'all remember, they improved a bit on the middle series last year but still STUNK up the joint on CUP racing.

Bobby H Jr and others big crash.

BUMMER.

I loathe the focus on the CUP drivers.. It can NOT be helping the series. Who wants to sponsor the little guy when they get NO MENTION, no glory?

Bobby getting out and ok...car still on fire under the hood...bad break for Bobby :(

The rain is back, again.

Anonymous said...

Gosh I thought the southeast was still in a substantial drought

Vicky D said...

It might be awhile to get this restarted.

@ Anon 9:34, there's only a drought when a race isn't scheduled. Someone once said that if you need rain, have a NASCAR race. I forget who. Anybody?

Anonymous said...

not a lot of rain at all on the radar currently.

Dot said...

Can we hear from a NW driver, please?

Anonymous said...

@dot - No seems like someone has re instituted the dang script Sheesh

So much for NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE radar.

Vicky D said...

Segments already shown on tv. We need to see new stories - maybe about a nationwide driver???? Good interview with Justin Algaier he even looks like Kurt Busch to me.

Anonymous said...

They should've run the race in Seattle ...

Oh wait ... We don't have a track because people don't want cash cows like NASCAR in the Pacific Northwest ...

There are some different drivers in the race tonight in different cars than one might see them in ...

Dot said...

Hey, we have Brad K now. That's 3 now.

Anonymous said...

OH yeah ... That 3-shot after they threw the red flag was priceless ... AB and Rusty were talking ... Brad was sitting there staring off into space as if he was trying to remember what was on his grocery list or wondering WHY he was sitting there ...

I think someone is trying to prove our point of Brad Daugherty being useless on the broadcasts ...

Didn't notice the Kurt lookalike, but he's very well spoken for such a young guy.

Sophia said...

I went to eat a piece of cake..have they MENTIONED a full time NW driver?

$^&$^&@^$&@^@

I come back and they are talking to Clint b and now a video on HIM.

And NW wonders why the series is in trouble...um...treating the drivers like their "INVISIBLE" maybe?

Ok, in the middle of CB sentence is a TW commercial...was that just my tv or national?

I think I am going to go watch my last DVD of the "ODD couple" tv show...a fave episode, Felix goes to court and tells folks never to assume because it makes an, well you know.

I am hoping I missed an interview with Bobby H Jr?? or did they even care?

Anonymous said...

Why is Punch even involved in the rain delay coverage.

Let the fancy pit studio handle it.

Anonymous said...

David-You're right. ESPN has this series all year long, times like this would be perfect to talk to people like Kenny or other regulars that aren't well known instead of pre-taped stuff and interviews with all the drivers we will see tomorrow.

The Loose Wheel said...

Glad to see them talking to Allgaier...wondering if this will be their new "young gun" crush though?

Didn't even mention he has a shot to win the ARCA championship this weekend either...

disappointed about that.

Dot said...

Thank you David. It was me. I kept watching the ticker but these old hag eyes have trouble reading it.

Anonymous said...

Sophia they had Brad Keselowski talk about how his car was, and some pre recorded Jr on Keselowski.Odd Couple an old fav.

Oh,I wanted to add, I was trying to get the leaderboard on N.com to see who was who amd where. It's now working.

Sophia said...

Gee interviewing Allgaier...he just won an ARCA race.

Yes, INTERVIEW KW!!

And how about Bobby Hamilton Jr? Sorry he isn't a chase guy...sigh

This young man is well spoken for a guy on camera..I think I like Justin. Let's not turn him into TOAST though...let the actions and behavior bring the boy up...not the hype. Boy at least they are giving an interview to an ARCA racer. YAY!!

Brad D would be ok as long as I can erase that vision of him giggling over the Dega big one last year....that kind of made me laugh then made me feel creepy at the same time....

The Loose Wheel said...

Dot. ESPN hasn't mentioned the guy...I just know they have run a few races here and there from being on their website and watching some CTS and ARCA races.

Its good experience for the kid but that team isn't ready to compete in NW just yet.

Wonder if we'll get a guy like Leffler for Kenny on? Figure with Rusty being in the booth that you'd get to hear from Kenny...but maybe big bro is still PO'ed about Kenny saying Rusty wanted to come back to Cup...

Anonymous said...

Did Brad D just call Rusty old? He really looks like a misfit in the studio. I think he asked about 1 question and that is it. Then he said Rusty was 60 and there was some awkward, uncomfortable laughter.

Vicky D said...

Justin Algaier seems like a nice young man. At least they are interviewing a few more drivers than just the chasers tonight.

Anonymous said...

I think David Ragan Likes Coke Zero about as much as I do. Looked like he would gag there as he took a sip

Dot said...

@ David, I know about JW Townley from the CTS. I just forget what driver is in what car when they run a few times. It's too bad that they don't interview all the up amd coming NW drivers or even the odd wads so we can get to know them.

stricklinfan82 said...

Best utilization of the pointer thing I've ever seen (if it has an actual name someone please correct me). Kyle clearly didn't "brake-check" them based on the speed display, and DJ should know the rules regarding where you can and can't restart a race better than most people so I trust what he said. Based on DJ's comments and the ESPN video I'm not so sure what NASCAR is upset with Kyle about.

Anonymous said...

At least DJ is looking out the window, but the booth sounds very tired. Zzzz....

I'm sure this isn't how Blaney wanted TV time :(

The Loose Wheel said...

if nothing is broken on the suspension of the #20 they should be okay and be able to soldier a decent finish. Sophia said...

Why wasn't Kyle Busch black flagged and did his name come up in the booth or did I space it out? heard it on some radios..is Weed the one that dropped the 'bomb'?

The Loose Wheel said...

sophia, the video shows kyle didn't do anything wrong so there was nothing to black flag him for. no one knows who dropped the bomb but it most certainly wasn't kyle busch.

that restart mess was caused by people trying to anticipate the start...kyle was doing nothing out of his right...everyone else got over-anxious.

stricklinfan82 said...

I don't want to jinx anything so I'm not gonna mention it by name, but am I the only one who's noticed something very obvious has been absent for about 40 or so minutes now? Sophia, I think that was Mike Wallace that dropped the bomb.

That's one way to get to go home.

Sophia I'll just say I had most of the Cheech and Chong 33 1/3 LP'S.

Dot said...

"James" just doesn't drive well in other series does he?

Dot said...

@ 3Bud, another golden oldie on this site, lol :)

Dot, DJ explained it. Those lines are there to prevent drivers from starting before that point. Ala an Indycar restart. If you restart at the same point, every time, then you run the risk of someone anticipating that point and trying to get to the outside of you or take advantage of it. Thats why Kyle brought them down closer to the line. I don't see what he did wrong because he never slowed down...he maintained his speed.

The telling part that we missed was that little tracker on Bliss...bet that speed would have been all over the board.

Anonymous said...

@dot--the lines just tells you the earliest point you have to be at before you can take the field to green. Most pretty much take the field to green from there and others a bit further down.

Dot said...

@ David, yeah, I know. Are those lines a reference point for the spotters to let the drivers know what's going on way ahead of them? I hope I'm making sense.

Anonymous said...

@3bud-what's an LP? *giggle* Yes I'm old enough to know what it is...I've even seen 8 tracks :).

@dot--no "James" does not do well in other series!

Whoa Nelly! Almost had a flier there! Poor Mr. Alligator :(. At least he'll get some rest for his trip tomorrow.

Jeff Green has to be the most unlucky driver in NASCAR history.

Big air for Jeff Green!

Dot said...

RWI, 2 for 2.

The Loose Wheel said...

Saw that coming. Good job Steven...

The lines are there for the drivers. The spotters cant see them since they are on the towers and can't see the lines.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Well, this should be on SportsCenter tonight.

The Loose Wheel said...

Is Steven ever going to grow up? Seriously?

You would think after enough wrecks he would learn to stop putting himself in these situations. Immature driver that just doesn't seem to "get it."

Sophia said...

gotcha 3bud

we are probably close in age. My friends had the albums...or I would borrow on occassion. :)

I think thats one of the fastest solo spins I have ever seen on JJ car getting loose. I can see how that was impossible to save....great driving by all to avoid him.

Stricklanfan: That pointer deal is called the "Pointer thingie" isn't it? ;-0

Isn't it sad we did not see THIS CAMERA WORK AT DEGA...we sure as hello won't see it tomorrow, either.

WOW! 31 almost flipped over. Jeff green moving around. Hope he is ok....hard likc.. Poor Justin...I bet he is honked off....

This track always seems to have a lot of wrecks..what is the deal.

Dot like they say "just because there's alittle snow on the roof doesn't mean uh...........

Dot said...

At least Green won't be a weapon anymore tonight. Did he forget where the gas pedal was? Looked like he was coasting.

Anonymous said...

is it just me, or are the spotters audio always behind the video we are watching

Daly Planet Editor said...

The theory is that there is supposed to be a delay for profanity. That is why Full Throttle never made sense to me.

Sophia said...

WHERE WAS THIS DIRECTOR LAST WEEK!!!????

Bipolar decision making. Last week I got motion sick from Bumper Cam Express excess.

RUIN one of my fave tracks and good job for NW at Charlotte. Unreal.

SOS tomorrow. But coverage been decent tonight as far as camera work imo.

but I am not stupid enough to hope for the same tomorrow.

been there, done that.

You can't blame Jeff. That car is owned by Curtis Key, the #40 Truck owner. They have made only 2-4 Nationwide starts with no funding, so they make the best with what they have. The car looked bad tonight, but they at least tried to run the distance and didn't park.

Daly Planet Editor said...

I thought they might have to do some welding on the fence after that one.

stricklinfan82 said...

Well I guess it's okay to mention by name now since it's over, but unless I missed something that was almost an hour straight without a commercial break. Kind of like last year when the Kansas Cup race got moved to ESPN2. As I said earlier, give me a rain delay every week if the side-effect will be very limited to no commercial interruption!

Dot said...

@ David 11:17, Boy, do I feel stupid. You'd think I would know that those lines are under the spotters. And to think, I'm not even drinking tonight.

Another pass the buck driver. Boo Jeff Green.

That was a veteran interview by Justin. Wrong place wrong time indeed. Did his job perfectly, caught up in a dumb choice by someone who should know better by now
