In-Progress From Auto Club Speedway: Sprint Cup Series On Fox

The second race of the season for the NASCAR on Fox TV crew comes along from the Auto Club Speedway of Southern California.

Interesting to note is that there is a thirty minute overlap between the SPEED RaceDay show and the pre-race programming from the Hollywood Hotel on Fox. RaceDay airs from 3:30 to 5:30PM, while Fox takes to the air at 5PM for an hour pre-race show.

Chris Myers will start the Fox coverage by hosting Darrell Waltrip and Jeff Hammond from the infield. Waltrip will present an interview with Dale Earnhardt Jr. talking about the accident with Brian Vickers at Daytona.

Mike Joy, Larry McReynolds and Waltrip will call the action. Dick Berggren, Steve Byrnes, Matt Yocum and Krista Voda will cover pit road and the medical center.

Fox presented the Camping World Truck Series race on Saturday and featured Digger throughout the telecast. Expect Digger to play a major role during this California race, the event closest to the Fox Sports headquarters in downtown Los Angeles. Once again, Digger will be featured in a cartoon episode during the pre-race show.

This is a long and grinding race that is often won on fuel mileage. When there is an incident, it is often spectacular and potentially dangerous. Watch for the manner in which the TV team handles this type of accident.

One developing story is that five cars have moved to the back of the pack including the two that tangled in Daytona, Brian Vickers and Dale Earnhardt Jr.

This post will serve to host your TV-related comments during the race. Just click the comments button to post and refresh your screen often. This is a family-friendly website, no foul language or hateful speech please. Comments may be moderated before they are posted. A full column about the race will be posted shortly after it is over.

Thanks again and happy posting.

Let's not mention Kvapil's first time sponsor, Farmers Insurance. I work for an agent. There's my disclosure and shameless plug

The Loose Wheel said...

if that happens JD it will be because they lost this race. Then again I dont see ISC giving this race to SMI which is probably why we are put through this year after year. Maybe the egos will get set aside and NASCAR will do what is best for the fans and give the second date to Vegas. its close enough for the cali crowd to one day it and it makes Bruton happy.

Maybe they'll get a clue and change this race date to Rockingham. (Wishful thinking)

There is a story about Oscar problems on Drudge report..some chick said she is going to be blogging or most likely snarking during the show. Ouch.

Are the cars that spread out or camera work does not want wide shots? lots of one car focus and in car stuff.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Well, it is clear after this entire weekend that things are not working out.

Something has to be done.

Vicky D said...

JD - it's amazing to me that California actually has 2 cup races a year.

"Maybe they'll get a clue and change this race date to Rockingham. (Wishful thinking)"

um...no, as I west coaster, I would like the chance to see a spring race thank you.

alex said...

Sophia,

The cars are a little spread out, but not as much as the NNS race last night. That's one reason I don't mind the Google Earth shots, because you get a sense of car to car intervals on the track, and also I like to watch the drivers' lines through the turns. The closure rate of cars on each other is something that is lost with all the tight shots.

bevo said...

That's one of the reasons for the bad racing there, track is way too wide. Hard to get good camera shots I imagine.

Anonymous said...

Dot, Travis is doing good and I have faith he will get his points this year. I can't quite forgive the Yates decision to give his points to the 98, dirty pool if you ask me

Daly Planet Editor said...

Well, it put the whammy on the in-cars it seems.

Anonymous said...

"JD - it's amazing to me that California actually has 2 cup races a year."

I don't understand....why do you enjoy taking chances to see races nearby away from me?

bevo said...

Oscar ratings are down but I'll bet dollars to donuts they're at least twice the race ratings tonight.

alex said...

Anon 7:23&7:25,

It's nothing personal. There are just fewer tracks out west that have good racing. If we could get a carbon copy of Riverside to run the week after Daytona, I'd be all for it. They can even put it on the site of this track!

Anonymous said...

"Oscar ratings are down but I'll bet dollars to donuts they're at least twice the race ratings tonight."

No offense, but I seriously doubt that.

Sophia said...

Alex, yea I guess i would pick Google earth shots over CLOSE UPS and IN CAR CAMS.

Paging Mr. Wells...how many weeks until TNT??

This in car cam stuff is waaaaaaaaay over used.

oh, now bumper cams...sigh.

The Loose Wheel said...

ri88 if you ran a team and you had no sponsor for travis but a full sponsor for menard, what would you do? Yates has pretty much stated they wont run a blank car this year period and the best decision for the organization was to do what they did. its not dirty pool IMO.

Tracy D said...

Howdy, gang. Sophia, love the recipe variation for Toll House.

I haven't heard DW and Co. slapping their thighs and yucking it up over Digger. Did I miss something? Been cooking dinner.

Anonymous said...

"They can even put it on the site of this track!"

you know I was all for Michael Waltrip's idea for a restrictor plate track at this location....but no one else seemed to like that idea.

Anonymous said...

Yeah, the drivers are just "normal guys". I have my own plane and a supermodel wife, too. That ship sailed years ago....although Nascar shills continue to read from the script.

What is wrong for calling the drivers what they are, high priced athletes and entertainers, not Forrest Gumps.

Anonymous said...

David, I agree, and understand the decision from an intillectual perspective, but the 28 is special to me personally and I think Travis is the best driver we have had in it in some time, I ment it in more of an 'old school' sense, not so much literal.

Dot said...

Slumdog Millionaire is going to stink up the Oscars. I think the split will be 50/50.

The Loose Wheel said...

Cali is a good race track, if you were a driver it would be a great place to race because you can move around and make your car work. unfortunately by doing that you get spread out and contact is minimized which means long green runs and spread out packs to which casual fans dont like. this place doesnt bother me its not my favorite track but i wouldnt skip this race for the sake of skipping it. i dont fall asleep during it either.

Anonymous said...

"although Nascar shills continue to read from the script."

You're kidding right? Even last year the Oscars got 32 million viewers - and that is flat-out HORRIBLE for the Oscars.

Last year the rating for the OSCARS was an 18.7 and this Cali race (which ran against part of the Oscars during the rain) got a 6.2 rating.

The year before, when it didn't rain, this race got a 6.7 rating. The Oscars got a 23.6 rating (still really bad for them). In other words, it still crushed NASCAR.

The idea that the race would outrank the OSCARS in the TV ratings is silly. FOX is just hoping to get a bigger rating than 6.2 - but even they know they can't BEAT the Oscars.

Tracy D said...

How can Vickers car be lighter and have all new geometry? I thought all the cars had to weigh the same.

Newracefan said...

Tracy if the car is lighter they can put the weight where they want it ie low and left

The Loose Wheel said...

i think what they mean by lighter is that they can move the weight around more freely then they could before. lol lighter is dangerous termanology to use when you got busted last fall for having a car that was too thin on the sheet metal lol.

Anonymous said...

"but even they know they can't BEAT the Oscars."

Oh but this year is different. the Oscars are in for a big beating.

I like those double video boxes on the green flag pit stops. Nice size.

Dot,

"Slumdog Millionaire" is not going to "stink up the Oscars." It's a sweet story of rags to riches and a romance to boot. It's a typically American story, but it's set in India. The sad thing is because it's set in India, most of America will not see this movie.

Sophia, NIkki Finke is live-snarking the Oscars. She's the best reporter in Hollywood, who regularly scoops Variety, The Hollywood Reporter, and the Los Angeles Times. She's been reporting on Hollywood for decades, and should not be dismissed as "some chick." She's a serious reporter who doesn't take it seriously.

Also I think a BETTER camera director could help out.

Younger drivers who might not have been attatched to their TV's during that few weeks in 2001 did not see for themselves his strength and heart and true racer mentality. Just my take

Nope, Dot, he is wearing a lovely tux. Viola Davis is being singled out right now - does anyone remember her in the Jess Stone mysteries on TV with Tom Selleck? Okay, back to Cali.

red said...

my take on dale's comment about his popularity:
the older drivers have watched him grow up in the sport. they watched the process of him moving from a young, obnoxious punk to a thoughtful racer. he's worked to earn their respect.

the younger guys see the last name and, as he bluntly said, they don't understand why he's so popular. they see it as being a consequence of being his dad's son, not because of who dale is as an individual.

in addition, i could be wrong but i don't recall any other racer in the history of the sport losing his dad during a race in which they were both competing. hell, i don't think we've had a situation where a dad has lost his son during a race in which they were both competing. that accelerated quite a bit of maturity for dale, in my opinion, and has to account for some of the respect with which he's regarded around the garage.

the man is honest to a fault: i loved his line about why he said he couldn't see his pit stall sign!

Tracy D said...

More rain coming? The racing gods must be really ticked off this year.

The Loose Wheel said...

I think the younger drivers, some of who had to earn their rides by winning get upset of the fact that jr has the money and notoriety without the results.

they have performed, all but called jr out in some cases, got backlash for it and dont understand what the situation is...

you can only live on a name for so long before you HAVE to perform. Kyle Petty has gotten ALOT of breaks for being a Petty but you see some true colors in his commentary this past week regarding the 44 and AJ's daytona scheme...

Jr is a skilled Cup driver, but to reference hollywood...is he an A list actor or just an A list ego?

Well DW's idea of Jr's car sounds like it may be a little off. Jr's saying loose, loose. Uh oh, he just said, lost a cylinder.

Newracefan said...

Oh good lord

Tracy D said...

Another rain caution? Three Hendrick engines in trouble?

fox now going to update the oscars with graphics during the race. you've got to be kidding me1

Daly Planet Editor said...

I caught Juan on the drums, that was a good one.

Anyone have a weather update?

Dot said...

Boy JD, you wanted something to happen.....

Unknown said...

Just got home to catch the end of the race. Would like to thank Fox for spoiling Oscar winners.

Daly Planet Editor said...

If the track dries, we are going to see some racing now. Maybe even a little close racing...imagine that!

The Loose Wheel said...

Dot, if you saw the showdown a few weeks ago you saw drivers give joey no slack at all and run him into the wall several times late. which was why he did what he did at the end.

Like i said, playing devils advocate...dont wanna get any fires going lol

Anonymous said...

jr just in the pits with hood up. uh oh

bevo said...

No engine problem with the 48, just popped out of 4th gear per Winston Kelly on MRN

Dot said...

Weather update for LV, rain.

Thomas tuned in for a race and the Oscars broke out LOL so sorry!

Tracy D said...

Where is the Dinger running at this moment?

Newracefan said...

Ok you gotta admit that engine is cool, and he took the glove off

Unknown said...

I was hoping to dodge the Oscar winners for the last few laps.

david: i don't tthink dale has any bigger ego than any of the other 42 racers out there tonight. i would be hard-pressed to find another racer who would have spoken as honestly as dale did to DW. i don't see an A-list ego in him.

please be certain we're separating the man from the more fanatical of his fans. sometimes, the man is viewed thru the prism of the most subjective of his fans and they take up for him in a seriously vociferous manner that alienates others.

i respect what he's done in his entire career, including late models and busch series. is he THE best right now? nope. but he's certainly not the worst and he's being slammed by folks who feel he's been unfairly handed what he's worked to achieve. his dad didn't hand him a car, his dad didn't hand him sponsors, his dad didn't create JRM. it's be nice if folks could stop blaming dale for the irrational part of his fanbase and look at him at least as objectively as they do other drivers.

A positive for FOX.(jmho)
At least as soon as, or sooner, you hear something on the scanner Fox is telling the viewers about it. And from what I remember they follow up on the stories. Not something we get with the "Worldwide Leader".
Cool motor cutout, BUT give us a split screen! I don't care if it is under caution.

red-

Well said, it's damned near impossible to have a logical and dispassionate discussion with most fans about Jr.

Love that Stewart/Old Spice ad!

Newracefan said...

Don't really like that Smoke commercial, this female is somewhat insulted and I really don't care if she is from Russia

David:
re your idea about wins and championships. If every racer had that as their attitude, we would never have the journeyman drivers on whom much of these series live.

To win and win a championship is obviously every racers goal, but some also just enjoy the fact that they can make a living having fun. Why do Scott Riggs, Elliot Sadler, Jeramy Mayfield, Mike Wallace, do it; just to name a few. Again, just my take

The Loose Wheel said...

I hear you red. I question his moves at JRM because until Rick came in there the team was only close to winning a single race. The rest of the time the team existed was wrecked cars and problems galore. His fans put him in a tough spot with their views that anything less than a win causes his detractors to slam him which is unfair. I was surprised to see after Daytona alot of people step up for vickers in the press which to me shows that the media has at least come off being on that side of the fanbase which is a huge relief to me. I try to see him as just another driver but it can be hard at times for various reasons. That being said I can recognize he has earned his spot in the Cup series and wish him the best in accomplishing his goals. Aint my favorite driver, just wish his fans would calm down some at times lol

Newracefan said...

Oh Bevo and you were busting on Soph for Chicks too

The Loose Wheel said...

Gotta think Mark is wondering why he let himself get talked into a full season right now...

NASCAR on FOX putting Oscar updates on screen? Good idea or bad?

red said...

david: one last point and then i think we need to let this blog get back to the coverage -- altho' i'm enjoying the discussion! thanks.
the wrecked cars at jrm were one of the reasons that two drivers were released by dale. it was starting to settle down right before the partnership with hms. he's taken full advantage of THAT relationship -- as have several other teams this year!
and, as a dale fan, i also wish that some of his fans could see him more objectively and calm down: it ain't all about the boy, ya' know?!?

Tracy D said...

Yeah, a shout-out for Reut! Lost his brakes, yikes!

Daly Planet Editor said...

Bummer for Reut...

Glenn said...

OK ESPN, I mean FOX. I don't need updates on the Oscars. If I wanted to watch I know the channel.
