In-Progress From Auto Club Speedway: Sprint Cup Series On Fox

The second race of the season for the NASCAR on Fox TV crew comes along from the Auto Club Speedway of Southern California.

Interesting to note is that there is a thirty minute overlap between the SPEED RaceDay show and the pre-race programming from the Hollywood Hotel on Fox. RaceDay airs from 3:30 to 5:30PM, while Fox takes to the air at 5PM for an hour pre-race show.

Chris Myers will start the Fox coverage by hosting Darrell Waltrip and Jeff Hammond from the infield. Waltrip will present an interview with Dale Earnhardt Jr. talking about the accident with Brian Vickers at Daytona.

Mike Joy, Larry McReynolds and Waltrip will call the action. Dick Berggren, Steve Byrnes, Matt Yocum and Krista Voda will cover pit road and the medical center.

Fox presented the Camping World Truck Series race on Saturday and featured Digger throughout the telecast. Expect Digger to play a major role during this California race, the event closest to the Fox Sports headquarters in downtown Los Angeles. Once again, Digger will be featured in a cartoon episode during the pre-race show.

This is a long and grinding race that is often won on fuel mileage. When there is an incident, it is often spectacular and potentially dangerous. Watch for the manner in which the TV team handles this type of accident.

One developing story is that five cars have moved to the back of the pack including the two that tangled in Daytona, Brian Vickers and Dale Earnhardt Jr.

This post will serve to host your TV-related comments during the race. Just click the comments button to post and refresh your screen often. This is a family-friendly website, no foul language or hateful speech please. Comments may be moderated before they are posted. A full column about the race will be posted shortly after it is over.

Thanks again and happy posting.

@bevo--I love Winston. I miss him from when he was part of NA$CAR This Morning. I loved it when they teased him when Sprint was taking over and how he'd have to change his name. His mama had a thing or two to say about that one *giggle*

@Tracy--the Dinger is 32nd 2 laps down

nrf-

I was just joking with her, the Old Spice is just funny to me because he goes from a total dork to having a beauty queen in a commercial with him and thinks it's cool she's Russian - he's still a dork :)

I would think the Allstate ads with the "chicks" stalking Kasey and not being able to drive would be worse.

And I'm joking using "chicks" :)

I wonder what ABC is going to think of FOX giving out Oscar winner names as they are announced on its race broadcast (obviously to try to keep people from switching channels). Methinks there are going to be some excutive phone calls going back and forth very soon as soon as ABC gets wind of that.

Smacks of quiet desperation on FOX's part - it's not willing to let the race stand on its own. Not surprising...

60 laps to go, folks in my house are talking about going to bed and watching the rest in the morning.

I do miss the earlier start times, even on the West Coast races.

Acutally I like the Oscar updates since I will never watch and show

Oscar Updates: I'll vote thumbs up.

I'm mildly interested in the Oscars (and that's putting it generously). I wouldn't take the time to watch it, but I am a little curious to see who won.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Good point with the Oscars, seems they planned it in advance but did not promote it before the race.

deffiately. he was able to man up and release guys he hired himself. credit due. take advantage of what you got like tony has as well!

just feel like if folks pulled the hype back some the pressure would be off him and he could get back to business. he does his best when he is loose, and he hasnt looked loose in a long time. the end at dei he actually looked loose since he knew he was out and honestly that year aside from 7 nuked engines they ran good enough to be a top 5 team every single week.

back to business. fox has been solid tonight...good replays, surprised they havent interviewed mark since mrn has already talked to him

NASCAR on FOX putting Oscar updates on screen? Good idea or bad?"

well, certainly curious.

(wonder if tony and jamie mac will end of wreckin' each other anytime soon . . .)

Anonymous said...

"If I wanted to watch I know the channel."

No no no, thats the thing. They dont want you to change the channel, but they know some of you might want that information. So what's the best way to keep you watching NASCAR? updates on screen I suppose.

By the way, the updates look like they are coming from FOX headquarters, and probably have nothing to do with the NASCAR on FOX crew at Fontana.

bevo said...

Don't like the Oscar updates, but other than that and of course Digger I'd say Fox has done a good job with the cards they're dealt at California.

Vicky D said...

You know I think there is still 38 or so cars left in the race but they are only showing the top 5.

JD, did you folks at your place also miss Sunday Night Football on NBC? that sometimes went until 11:30 on the east.

I think Smoke's commercial for Old Spice is hilarious...I don't like escalators and panicked stepping on one as a kid *but nothing like the commercial* and it still takes me a moment..and I hand onto handrails very well. (if escalator breaks they can do serious damage to bodys as under neath is a see saw of teeth...I don't wanna post what can happen, but it's gruesome)

And the girl from Russia doesn't bother me...but I have friends from all over, one's Puerto Rican and a couple are black, we play sometimes with each others' background if it comes up in conversation..they explain words mean different things to their culture than mine for instance. :) But I find humor in most everything (contrary to how I come off griping about NA$CA$ and BSPN)

We have gotten too PC in this world imho...much like NASCAR
(to tie this comment back to the blog!)
I can't get used to JPM in red...I miss that Texaco Star on black car.

P.S. While editing I saw Bevo use the words "chicks". I agree those women in those ALLSTATE ads were creepy.

Hey guys, just got home. I have a few comments about the race and pre-race show. Who told Fox that a Digger cartoon should be a part of the pre-race show? This is the dumbest thing I've ever seen. Who is Fox trying to attract--the Baby Einstein demographic?

Is it just my TV or are the stands pretty empty in spots?

Loved the Kenseth portions with Wendy on RaceDay.

Can't believe Fox is running updates on the Oscars. Do they think that remote controls no longer exist?

Finally, someone called Jr out on his lifestyle. Great interview by DW. I've been saying for a long time that Jr's outside interests may be having an impact on his racing, but of course Jr denies that.

Holy COW !!!! This is OT,but what are the Vegas odds that Sara Jessica Parker's chest will pop out of her gown? Sheesh !!! Did she have the Danica "enhancement" via Go Daddy?

Dot said...

They're getting racy. The 5 fans in the stands are on their feet.

Tracy D said...

This is fun, the race between the 24 and 17!

Charlie said...

If you were recording the Oscars and planned on watching it later they now have shown you who won.

The Loose Wheel said...

18 fastest car on the track, chopping tenths off a lap

Vicky D said...

We're watching Jr's hotpass station so missing out on the oscar updates but see lots of racing in both boxes.

Newracefan said...

88 about to be lapped rain anyone

Dot said...

Caution alert. JR will be the lucky dog.

The Loose Wheel said...

JD you know what i miss that ESPN used to do VERY well and FOX did well at first?

The at the line intervals which showed who was fast per lap. It would spot the top 15-20 cars and show you the fastest, second fastest and third fastest cars

red said...

ok, this might just be the only time i'll ever write this but i have to say this: DW is outstanding at seeing some of the most subtle things about the cars, things that go a long way to explaining why something's happening. put aside all the smoke he blows sometimes: when he's focused on the racing and watching the cars, the lines they run, the way the car handles on the track? he's really great.

perfect example: "watch those cars come off the corner. they are slidin' those cars." damned if he isn't right on with that observbation.

just wish he'd at least take a back seat on the shrub bandwagon. i won't ask him to jump off completely but a bit less adoration would be welcome.

alex said...

Darbar,
Also OT, but I switched channels at the "right" time and caught that. Lots of tape I would assume.

The Loose Wheel said...

Gordon got to the lead and is blowing the field away

Yes:) I flipped over during the commercial just in time to see it (them)

Stands are actually pretty filled on the front stretch

That's the real problem with FOX's approach. If you are on the West Coast- or a night owl on the East Coast- you have plenty of time left tonight to watch a complete DVR replay of the Academy Awards after the race is over before anyone "spoils" the winners for you.

Now FOX isn't giving those people that option. And those were the people who were trying to be loyal to FOX by watching the race in full instead of flipping back and forth like many of us.

Dot said...

David, I just said JG is in his own zip code. JR no longer 1st car a lap down. GF pit stops again.

bevo said...

red-

Agree about DW today, he knows a lot. It's just a matter of him getting rid of the goofy stuff. I much prefer this DW.

Sophia said...

jr lap down...tough night for HMS but Jr didn't like his car yesterday..trans slipping out of gear.

COMMUNICATION folks is what it's about.

darbar

ok, your comment made me switch channels! LOL. I think SJP just had 'push up insert' enhancement. If she got the intrusive surgery kind, she didn't get her money's worth.

tough break for harvick: that was one heck of a record he had going there.

The Loose Wheel said...

Harvick was the only RCR car worth a darn too.

Here we go...business is about to pick up now

nice correction by hammond there: biffle slid that beast almost out of the box all together. hammond the crew chief comes thru for the guys!

JD-

Any way to get the ratings break down for the race and see what happens at 9:30 Eastern when Jr goes out?

Anonymous said...

If things continue to go the way it has for a few drivers, namely Jr, and he's out of the top 35 after the first 5 races, this is going to have a huge impact on qualifying. Since he's not a past champion, there's no provisional for him. The 88 team needs to get their stuff together.

Tracy D said...

Not a word about Ambrose. How's he doing?

Jaws and DW? ROFLOL

Tracy D said...

Darbar, one angle looked very foggy on my HD tv as well. Could it be the dust from the staydri?

Vicky D said...

Dewalt pitbox is almost bigger than my house.

red said...

@ bevo: i knew you weren't being a twit (and i'm uber jealous that you saw those wins!) unfortunately, there's a seriously strong element of truth in your comment. i just felt compelled to defend those of us dale fans who actually watch the race because there's racing happening!

and the boy looked a whole lot happier before they put the mic in his face, didn't he?

bevo said...

Yep, getting foggy. Humidity rising, temperature falling to near dew point level.

Anonymous said...

@red--it really was a great record for Happy! :(

@Tracy--Marcos is 19th 1 lap down

Vicky D said...

Bevo we were also at Jr's first Busch and cup wins at Texas. Good time.

Dot said...

Mid pack, 4th & 5th? Who said earlier about showing only the top ten? I guess if you're a lap down, you're not there.

Not true. Both aired live and simultaneously on the West Coast. The Oscars was on at the same time as the race, which means some people may have taped the Oscars to watch after the race. Or may have put it on the DVR to begin after the race and are watching and catching up to the rest of the live telecast via DVR right now.
