Live Blogging The Sprint Cup Series Race From Texas On Fox

There is an unexpected twist that has been thrown into the mix for the live Sprint Cup race today. The Texas wind has kicked-up and gusts of 40 mph have been blowing everything around at the speedway.

This should affect the race in several ways. First, the COT's at speed are bothered by cross-winds. Secondly, the big bump on the track where the tunnel is located should now upset the cars even more with the wind blowing. Finally, the trash from the fans will be blowing onto the track and the COT is notorious for overheating when the grill is blocked.

Fox is going to have to adapt from the scripted opening to deal with these issues. All the other stories concerning Kyle Busch, Carl Edwards and the potential closure of the 8 team have already been discussed on NASCAR Now and Raceday.

Speaking of NASCAR Now on ESPN2, who from NASCAR is going to make the phone call to get things straightened out for the rest of the season? This Sunday morning, once again NASCAR Now refused to promote the start time and TV network of the very race they were on the air to promote. Instead, the network again promoted the NHRA races...simply because they were on ESPN2.

Chris Myers and Jeff Hammond start the day at 1:30PM from the Hollywood Hotel. Darrell Waltrip will appear on the show and then move upstairs for the 2:16PM green flag to call the race. Mike Joy and Larry McReynolds will once again be alongside Waltrip.

Down on pit road will be the best group of reporters in the business. Dick Berggren, Steve Byrnes, Matt Yocum and Krista Voda will hopefully be used a lot more often to recap the field and follow the stories of the day.

This race features a tough pit road entrance, a dogleg on the frontstretch and a big bump over the tunnel. The challenge for the production team is to track the progress of the teams as pit strategy and gas mileage scenarios play out. Accidents at this track take a while to clean-up, so expect to see the Hollywood Hotel during extended cautions.

This post will serve to host your comments about the TV coverage of the Sprint Cup Series race from Texas on Fox. To add your opinion, just click on the comments button below. This is a family-friendly website, please keep that in mind when posting.

Thank you for taking the time to stop by The Daly Planet.

I think JJ will be story for the rest of the race. Especially since KyB is out of contention.

you know I'm probably beating a dead horse here, but I wish the nascar advertisers would realize I'm not seeing one nascar commercial today, with the indycar race on versues, I know I can always swap over during nascar commercials and see live racing thanks to their side by side coverage.
So though I'm getitng the indycar commercials subliminally while watching the race, I'm getting zero nascar commercials other than the in race ads.... when will the powers that be wake up and stop fighting the side by side concept for commercial breaks?
while they do I'll continue to watch other things during commercials... the only way they can get me to watch a nascar commercial is if there is racing alongside of it!

Daly Planet Editor said...

How about all the Bud ads even as the new owners dismantle all the American sports marketing sponsorships in the US and try to sell everything else the company owns? Love those Belgians.

NHRA starting on ESPN2.

I thought the wind would be a problem coming out of turn 2 but I was way off

inkthatpaints said...

With you JD about the ESPN comparison. I had enough about 100 laps ago and turned the radio up and the tv volume down. This is the first time I've ever done that with Fox. What a complete difference - I'm loving it.

Vicky D said...

JD, I would even know that high winds would create headaches for the cars and I've never raced a car before. That wasn't much of an update from Hammond I don't think.

The Loose Wheel said...

Not a word said about Ragan today...he's 5th

bevo said...

Re : commercials.

Tivo on IRL race but switching over during commercial break and have the NHRA on ESPN360 in another window on my laptop.

Having said that did see a bit of that last Bud ad... make a note to start going to that bar. My bartenders never look like that.

Dot said...

A little late on this. Booth was saying the caution helped KyB from going 3 laps down. There are only 18 cars on the lead lap. Is there a difference between 2-3 laps when you're 3X? They can be lame up there sometimes.

Anonymous said...

Ratings will be down yet again this week, This is yet another boring race. What is it = COT racing?

bevo said...

@David-

They just did 5 minutes ago

The Loose Wheel said...

Trying to make 2 laps up is still possible because of how fast his car is. Had he went 3 down he would have to race to get 2 of them back. Now he only has to race hard enough to get 1 back then he can put himself in a position for the lucky dog. Theres enough time left to make the laps up if he can get a caution like...oh...say...now! lol

The Loose Wheel said...

oh, thanks bevo. I was doing some laundry so I didnt hear a word about it lol

The Loose Wheel said...

okay, let me try this. Hornish 14th. have they mentioned that?!

bevo said...

Why not do a through the field instead of these useless race breaks?

Daly Planet Editor said...

Hammond and Myers are talking, but it is all random conversation. They need a format that rundowns the 15th on back using the pit reporters. Hammond and Myers lend nothing when they do it like this.

reutimann's 3 cars away from being in the lucky dog

Oh Dot I'm sorry that sucks.

Vicky D said...

Sorry Dot.

Newracefan said...

JD you following Mike Mulhern on Twitter. Too funny and Too true

Daly Planet Editor said...

Typical scenario for Fox this season. In the second half of the race, the coverage of the stories stop and they just show the obvious on the track.

Who is leading, who crashed, who messed up in the pits. But, no point of reference at all.

The Loose Wheel said...

Sorry Dot, he sounded upbeat on PRN tho. They had a great car

Daly Planet Editor said...

nrf,

Yea, he is a wildman. At least he stopped talking about me on his site!

Dot said...

Thanks to you all.

I really think JJs the one today.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Junior is going to have to make some lifestyle changes pretty soon.

The Loose Wheel said...

JD...you guys aren't pals? lol

Dot said...

Oh, that sucks for JR. Wth was the sign guy doing?

Dot said...

What relative holds the sign?

Newracefan said...

Perhaps he needs glasses

The Loose Wheel said...

Yeah, I cant fault Jr there. The crew's effort sucked to say the least

Sophia said...

IRL is more interesting...odd day of crashes which I HATE to see in open wheel...some with impact.

Texas is a snoozefest.

then again, I am tired and sleepy...good news, Kyle ain' t leading.

Other good news, with Artie back on FOX I did not DEVOTE HOURS to the race just to get ripped off at the end with "Winner car only over finish line then flagman, then crew". :( I am still not watching hardly just reading comments and one eye on IRL

Daly Planet Editor said...

Someone could have keyed the radio and told him to turn in. Geez, what a mess.

Dot, too funny.

@ David, I was going to comment when he was 12th but, I didn't want to jinx him. Like he needs help. Sorry. ;)

Daly Planet Editor said...

So I hear Danica went all Jimmy Spencer on some dude in the IRL race. At least they are having some action in that tilt.

Newracefan said...

David I agree quad pits huge waste of time

Vicky D said...

And I hate to beat a dead horse, but Fox needs to put the lap they are running, not how many laps are left in the race.

Dot said...

@ Kenn, thanks. I haven't found them in LV yet. But, I do buy other LD goodies.

The Loose Wheel said...

I still love the old Kenny Schrader LD commercial lol

Newracefan said...

Need quck caution for Reut to get back on the lead lap.

Dot said...

We'll be able to see the IRL hilites on Speed Report. I wish I would've watched that race instead.

Hey, good for Sam, on lead lap.

The Loose Wheel said...

Reuti has to race for his lap back, he cant get the LD

red said...

well, the back yard's cleaned and i believe i have missed almost nothing by not being tuned to fox. so now i'm back to prn on the radio, reading the closed captioning and wondering why, dear lord in heaven, WHY is it so difficult to find out what's going on all around the track and not just at the front or with the top 5 drivers?
i despair.

The Loose Wheel said...

I thought if you lost your lap by penalty you couldnt get the LD.

clarification someone

Newracefan said...

David that's not true remember JR lost a lap pitting outside the box then wrecking Vickers Nascar said he was eligible for the free pass

Vicky D said...

JD, instead of Mike Joy's feel good story about Jeff Gordon winning the race, I'd go for Reut instead.

Newracefan said...

David I think it depends on the penalty. Really bad race for it, really stupid will give it back

The Loose Wheel said...

Yeah....thats true.

But then again they docked someone laps before and said they couldnt get the LD since they were taken by penalty.

So I guess it depends on the infraction lol

The Loose Wheel said...

nrf, i must be channeling ya now lol

I keep losing the HD feed. They'll go to an incar shot and it'll switch to standard and never go back to HD until they go to commerical. Rather annoying.

Kenn Fong said...

J.D.,

Hot Pass has been switching the network feed and driver feed location from bottom left (the biggest and usual location for the driver video) to top right since the beginning of the season. So I guess they have someone handling the channels.

The audio mix is just right, though. They have also used a graphic showing the driver's position in relation to the leader which stays on most of the race, which is excellent.

Junior made some derisive comments about Hornish not being able to hold his line.

so, david, just to clarify: are you saying that young mr busch missed wrecking the 88 but it wasn't for lack of trying?

i'm just sayin' that if you're gonna drive like a kamikaze, you sure better have the car control to bail you out when you overdrive like the #18 car did there.

i agree with you: if the 88 hadn't moved up to avoid the 18, both cars would have been scrap.

The J said...

mr edwards about to take the lead

The Loose Wheel said...

@ red

I dont think he was trying to wreck Jr at all. His plan was simple because he has tried for 100 laps to do it with no success. Get in front of whomever was leading and stay there. They know they can get back on the lead lap but they need to get the 1 lap back first. He saw a hole, went for it and the car stepped out a bit. It happens.

@ Karen
If NASCAR sits you for rough driving, you cannot get a lap back via LD. I thought that applied to any NASCAR issued penalty where you lost a lap but that is not the case.

Jr off the pace

Tracy D said...

I don't think these drivers "put them in the wall" just because they can, as DW just said. DW continues to be a COT cheerleader extraordinaire.
I just found a roll of film I'd forgotten - had it developed, and lo and behold, it's a race before the COT. The cars looked so pretty.
