Live Blogging The Dover Nationwide Series Race On ABC

This is one of the rare ABC broadcasts for the Nationwide Series. The exposure on an over-the-air TV network should be good for the series and perhaps let some new fans see the Dover action.

Allen Bestwick will kick things off at 2PM ET with the NASCAR Countdown pre-race show. Joining Bestwick this week are Dale Jarrett and Brad Daugherty. Rusty Wallace has the weekend off. Joey Logano is on the pole and he should be a topic. Whether or not Bestwick brings-up the Sprint Cup Series news of the crew chief change for Junior and the Mayfield legal challenge will be interesting to see.

Dr. Jerry Punch returns to call the action with Jarrett and Andy Petree in the booth. Vince Welch has the weekend off, so Jamie Little, Shannon Spake and Dave Burns will handle the action on the newly-renovated pit road.

Rain washed out the truck series race on Friday night and left the track pretty green. The Nationwide guys are going to face a track without a lot of rubber down. Dover is treacherous and the concrete surface is a challenge to the newer drivers.

The weather is clear and the pictures should be good. Dover is narrow on the backstretch and it has been a challenge over the years to follow the action in that area. But the biggest challenges at Dover can only be seen on the in-car cameras.

This track has two bridges over the speedway at the entrance and the exit of the backstretch. They are usually described as being between turns two and three. The cameramen use practice to perfect their moves that allow coverage of the racing action but never show the bridges during the race.

Look for this element during the telecast today. When the Director uses an aerial shot or stays with an in-car camera you can see the exact location of both of these bridges. This veteran ESPN crew uses the best triple-split on TV during caution flag pit stops. Also on-target is the wideshot of the finish with all the lead lap cars clearly racing to the line on-camera.

This post will serve to host your comments about the ABC coverage of the Nationwide Series race from Dover. To add your TV-related comment, just click on the comments button below. This is a family-friendly website, please keep that in mind when posting.

Thanks for taking the time to stop by The Daly Planet.

Hey folks, this should be a good race and the weather is holding.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Due to tire issues in practice, there will be a competition caution at lap 35 in this race.

Let's see when the ABC team mentions this fact.

hey gang! well, we're trying the truck race again today so we're headed out right now for dover!

I cannot believe we are having the same issue in WA. I thought they had cleared that up.

"Hannah Montana" on KOMO SD and HD in Seattle. Fortunately I have access to the Detroit HD station. Looks like they'll join the race at 11:30.

I"m sooooooo tired of this. It's 11 a.m.! Surely kid's programming could be finished by now. Then again, Hannah Montana is Disney's gravy train...

No dice, JD ...

They do it for the 4 Nationwide races on ABC ... This is the 3rd straight year ...

What they do is ... If the actual racecast starts at 11:30am pacific, they'll move one show to like 4:30pm ...

But, they won't do that to air the pre-race show (NASCAR Countdown) ...

There's 90 minutes of infomercials and an ep of "NASCAR Angels" after the time block for the race ...

Charlie said...

It will interesting to see the comparison between the two races today and the crew that broadcast them.

Prerace is on ABC in LV.

This is a rather unique TV opportunity for sure. The buttoned-up style of ESPN and the laid-back style of SPEED.

snlfan3 said...

The affiliates are required to show a certain amount of children's programing each week during daytime hours.

That does not mean that they can not prempt the children s programming until after the race

Daly Planet Editor said...

snlfan, we have been going at it with this one company for years.

All the other West Coast ABC stations just move the block up an hour, but Fisher runs their local news in a multi-hour block and refuses to lose an hour.

There are tons of other ABC affiliates on the West Coast who have no problem. It all comes down to losing the ad revenue from one hour of weekend morning local news.

Got to love TV!

Dot said...

Why do they always talk about the CUP drivers on the NW prerace? Oh wait, they just talked about Keller and Wimmer for about 5 seconds.

The NW Series needs a sit down with the TV partners demanding equal time for their drivers.

Dot said...

Uh oh, Kevin Conway has the Extenze sponsorship. Here we go again.

Commercial for "Wipeout" - proof that the movie "Idiocracy" was indeed a documentary.

Newracefan said...

Dot If Jeffery Earnhardt had made the race they would have been all over him.

bevo said...

Wonder were I might see this "truck" race you speak of? :)

kbaskins said...

I wondered the same thing bevo. ;-)

Jeez, why do these people always sing your anthem like it's a dirge?

TSN is supposed to be showing the race. There's tennis crap on right now. TSN has learned well from their ABC/ESPN affiliation.

--KarenB

Dot said...

@ bevo, too funny. MXC (the Japanese original) is much better. The trucks are on about 2:30 (PDT).

stricklinfan82 said...

bevo,

I think I can excuse this particular lack of cross-promotion for Speed Channel. ESPN might not be sure when the Truck race will actually air on Speed. They might be thinking that the powers-that-be at Speed will deem a Behind the Headsets re-air and a Truck qualifying re-air more important than the live coverage of the Truck race... again.

Anonymous said...

JD - Mark your calendar ... No airing of "NASCAR Countdown" for Seattle (& prolly Portland) on June 27th ... ;-)

KOMO-tv's Saturday morning newscasts are a snooze fest ...

Daly Planet Editor said...

I heard through the grapevine that the ABC Wipeout thing was a bunch of wanna-be-actors and they "act" their way through it with personalities assigned to them by the TV producer.

I may have to pass on that one.

Which was more over-hyped...Wrecked, Wipeout or Jon and Kate Plus Eight?

JD

Daly Planet Editor said...

Karen, the race is not on TSN2?

bevo said...

JD,

Wouldn't surprise me at all, very little "reality" in reality tv.

Daly Planet Editor said...

bevo, I considered opening a TV blog featuring "reality" shows.

If most viewers knew what went on behind the scenes, it may be a very different story in the ratings.

The genesis of this blog was SPEED starting PINKS and dropping tons of real racing. Seems like long ago.

JD

kbaskins said...

No JD, for once it's on TSN, which is nice 'cause I don't get TSN2. And what do they do? They broadcast tennis stuff for the pre-race and about 10 minutes into the regular coverage.

Shaw bought out my local not-for-profit cable company earlier this year. Hopefully, starting next month, they'll re-align the channels so I can get TSN2.

However, that doesn't matter if they pre-empt programming. TSN is an ESPN affiliate, and they have the same problem as ESPN: too much programming, too little broadcast time.

--KarenB

Dot said...

Really? We're still under caution?

They need to address this issue.

"I heard through the grapevine that the ABC Wipeout thing was a bunch of wanna-be-actors and they "act" their way through it with personalities assigned to them by the TV producer."

like I heard through the grapevine the final 10 in American Idol were known before the "auditions".

Gotta love tv

Little 'reality' in reality tv...

Exactly my thoughts ever since the dumb trend begin.

bevo said...

The only one of those shows I ever watched was the John Force one.

A few friends went out to the Texas Motorplex a couple of years ago for the taping of Pinks. They couldn't believe how contrived it was before the tape started rolling.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Bad break for the Biff, got a replay?

Dot said...

Alot of cars off and/or out already.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Hotaru1787 said...

bevo said...

Kind of weird statement by AP about Biffle there

bevo said...

MRN says Bif had two 2 inch cuts right down the middle of both the right side tires

Newracefan said...

I'm behind but had a thought. what happens if the NW race runs really late (red flags for wrecks or what ever), would they still run the truck race since there are no lights?

Hotaru1787 said...

Tire issues... uh oh, could be a problem.

Please happen to SDDD...

Hotaru1787 said...

NFR-I thought the same thing.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Do you guys remember if JP or AB told us that there would be a comp caution on lap 35?

bevo said...

Very good replays of that wreck

Daly Planet Editor said...

nrf, they would start it, run it past halfway and then call it for darkness like they used to in the old days.

bevo said...

AB mentioned it just before they went to the booth

stricklinfan82 said...

It sure would have been a nice story to see 4th generation driver Jeffrey Earnhardt make his Nationwide Series debut today. It's just a shame that NASCAR thinks it's healthier for the sport to have 5 start-and-park cars who pulled off the track in fewer than 20 laps taking the place of a driver like that who actually would have tried to finish the race. The sad thing is I have a feeling the starting and parking isn't finished yet.

If NASCAR's not going to stop the start-and-park maybe it's time to break qualifying into 3 parts - the top 30/35, then the other cars that actually plan on racing, and then IF there are any spots left let the start-and-park cars fight amongst themselves to be the "field fillers" and take those final few paychecks.

Hotaru1787 said...

Please note that (once again) I am not actually watching/listening to the rae and relying on you guys again.

(knowing me, I'll come in later)

Dot said...

@ JD, the caution @ lap 35 was mentioned. Did they just abruptly go to comml during the pit stop?

Daly Planet Editor said...

Jeffrey looks and sounds so much like Dale Sr. it still freaks me out.

Daly Planet Editor said...

hotaru, what's the issue? technical or financial?

stricklinfan82 said...

I like the triple-pit split but what in the world is the point of switching away from the 6-18-20 split to show the 18's pit stop on the full screen, followed by the 20's on the full screen?

Just keep that triple-split the whole time and let us see all 3 stops in their entirety, please.

Hotaru1787 said...

JD- ESPN 'script' issue!

Charlie said...

Looks to me like Car 0 Mark Green is out along with car 90 Johnny Chapman, car 91 Terry Cook, car 96 Dennis Setzer and car 05 Casey Atwood. Car 77 Peyton Sellers is also out but was in a wreck on the first lap.

Hotaru1787 said...

Plus, I tend to not watch the whole race if SDDD is too far ahead.

Unknown said...

I now it is very early - but they seem to be showing more of the racing. Doubt it will last

Daly Planet Editor said...

They keep jumping from story to story without letting it payoff and us see what happened.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Thank you Charlie, the usual suspects.

Hotaru1787 said...

Not using the 'script'....

Maybe I'll turn on MRN (but if certain 'Yota driver leading... OUT)

Bill, illegal streaming of sports TV is one of the biggest problems on the Internet.

I don't know who Justin is, but when the lawsuit comes down it is going to be huge.

The technology is easy and cheap. This has been a huge issue for international sports TV shows.

The results show isn't for another hour or so. Over there, since its a single timezone, they can have the competition, and results on the same day.

The music industry finally got the message and allowed digital downloads at a very low cost in part to combat piracy giving people a legal way to get what they want.

Hopefully, we'll see the same thing with TV broadcasts. There is obviously a huge market for it.

Vicky D said...

Missed the begining of the race, but have caught up nos. I hate also hearing the cup drivers complain about the Nationwide drivers being in their way this is a race not move over and stop for them. We watched just the other day Allen Parsons do the East West race in Iowa and they did a terrific job so much more exciting than this group here. How did Biffle get down several laps missed that.

If you're interested in drivers who use Twitter (or any other race-related tweets, including every racing series, owners, tracks, and reporters), check out this awesome reference http://twittermotorsports.com/wiki/Main_Page .

They go to the trouble of verifying if it's really the driver. For instance, Ryan Newman has a Twitter account, but he has someone tweet on his behalf. Yes, it's really McDowell's account, but I don't think he's tweeting during the race.

Some driver favourites: Max Papis, BLabonte, Kyle Petty.

The Loose Wheel said...

Wow. Shannon's report on Brad added nothing.

Anonymous said...

@Bill H & JD--they do that on Justin too that's how I'm able to watch until I get a TV/cable again. You just hook up your TV to the computer (or can do a webcam, that's what Ben did until he got the TV tuner) and set up a channel to broadcast and you're in business! If you want to show F1 or IRL you have to password protect the channel, but people can contact you to get the password. My friend lost his channel again (he lost it once for showing F1 and lost it a few weeks ago for showing IRL pole day. Funny he showed other IRL stuff the weeks before and nothing happened). Then again I watched the 500 on an unprotected Justin channel and the owner hasn't lost his channel over it. But if someone tips off some of these folks and they contact Justin then you lose your channel like that. No time for "oopsie I didn't know won't happen again". So far SPEED/FOX/ESPN/NA$CAR has not had an issue with this. We get a lot of folks outside the US who while they have to watch at a ridiculous hour at least are able to watch via the site. We even have a couple of folks serving our country who tune in when they can :)

There are tons of streaming sites, I'm only familiar with Justin because of folks I've chatted with in there and everyone shares with one another so that we can always have back up if one person's stream goes down (not due to it being pulled but due to internet/cable issues) we have another place that'll welcome us. But I've watched AI on another streaming site and it's been no issue (on Justin you have to password protect the channel to show it otherwise once someone rats you out, the AI folks will contact Justin and you're shut down). I don't know if the difference is that he has his own website and then embeds the video to his site or what.

Hotaru1787 said...

BTW- I have now turned on MRN. Told ya I'd tune in late.

Again, I ask what is there to gain by switching out of the 29-18-20 triple pit split to show the 20's pit stop on the full-screen?

Keeping the triple pit up the full time would have let us see both Kyle and Joey's pit stop in their entirety. Instead we saw the first 4 seconds of Kyle's and no more (and were only spared Clint's full stop because he had pit stall 43 and his stop was done before Joey reached his stall).

Starting with a triple-pit and then switching to a full-screen pit stop midway through is just about as inadequate as Fox's laughable approach to yellow flag stops, in my personal opinion.

The Loose Wheel said...

Go Kyle.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Shannon got caught short on that one.

Ned Jarrett tells a story about doing the pit reporting for MRN and they send it down to him for an unexpected pit stop by one of his assigned drivers.

He was um..standing in the men's room and and just listened to the stop and called it live with one hand holding the microphone.

As the car left he sent it back up to the booth and Barney Hall.

One guy washing his hands looked at him and said "so that's how you do it."

Too funnny.

The Loose Wheel said...

Stricklin, I think they were expecting someone to pull the fender out on Joey from when Biff knocked it in a couple restarts ago

cvt said...

@ hotaru, my wish is that SDDD leads the most laps and then.....disaster strikes.

@ bevo, you're killing me about your comment to hotaru.

bevo said...

Doesn't that make something like 14 cars out now? Might be a good time to look at the pit stall situation now and how it might impact the end of the race.

The Loose Wheel said...

cvt, no way they will. In 2 prior tests we are only up to half a fuel run, no way they turned around in a couple weeks and got a tire to last twice as long I dont think.

Hotaru1787 said...

I think I'm the leader of TDP Shrub-Out Crew.

Dmo said...

On the triple-split, I wish they would stay with all three drivers the entirety of the pit stops; but they should loosen up the shot on the cars that get out first so you can see their progress on pit road while the other cars finish their stops. JMHO, of course.

That's a fair thought but I'm not sure about that since they did the same thing on the first set of yellow flag stops, before said fender damage existed.

To me it just makes zero sense to take that approach. The triple-pit allows us to see 3 stops in their entirety. Switching out of that shot to blow up the shot of one of those 3 stops on the full screen is completely counterproductive and defeats the whole purpose of the triple-pit to begin with, in my personal opinion.

Dot said...

@ David, that's what I thought. But why do the 3 series run the same tire? It's apparent that it's not working on the COT.

I'm going outside. Be back for the truck race. Have fun.

Daly Planet Editor said...

bevo, did not know you knew him so well. probably dead on target.

The Loose Wheel said...

Dot, it has alot to do with cost I think.

Thats why the big argument from Ray Evernham since this car came out was that until NASCAR allows Goodyear to design a tire specifically for this car, whether that be a different rim size, sidewall height, or treadwidth, we were going to continue to see problems with the COT. Plus if you design a tire just for the COT its going to probably be wayyyyy too hard for the CWTS or NW cars to run on.

I give the goodyear guys some credit for what they have to work with, but at the same time until the COT gets its own tire to fit that car, the struggles will continue

Did the video get weird there for anyone else just before the break when they zoomed in on Busch?

With such a short track and as many cars still out there you would think there would be some good racing but if there is, I don't see it.

David - and a attaboy to Bobby Jr. too he's had a great race today.

The Loose Wheel said...

Yeah, its a shame he doesnt have a full time ride. Really irks me to see McClure driving that 24...they were a top 10 team last year with Bobby Jr in the car

Something must have broken at my ABC affiliate, KSTP in St. Paul, MN. We've been frozen on a picture of Jeff Burton lecturing people about Holiday Inn Express for like 20 minutes.

DJ talks about Busch the way an analyst should. Specific examples about his talent without creaming all over him. DW should take note of that.

LOL bevo!!!

Anon at 3:46 - maybe Burton's getting a mullett!

Anon, when a video path loses the incoming signal, it holds the final image it received.

You are seeing that final frame.

Might be time for a phone call.

Been a great broadcast for all of the technical stuff, pit reporters have been good with the exception of SS. But if you took JP out of the booth today I don't know if we would have noticed much. AP and DJ could carry the load alone.

Well well well we have a new storyline now don't we kids :)

Really rookie move by Joey, hopefully he learned something from it.

Kyle aint gonna be happy

Anon 4:46, reboot your DVR if you have one.

Oh no, no interview with KB today. Big congrats to BK.

Heard Dan screaming so I came in. My wish came true.

Brad won? Cool!

Cry SDDD, cry!

The Loose Wheel said...

Uhhh, call it crybaby but his teammate screwed him in my eyes. They got in the marbles then the 38 finished Kyle off which is why the RF went down.

Give Brad credit, they were there all day.

Gonna be some hard feelings between the entire 18 and 20 team though

Think Kyle kind of slew-footed it there to borrow a hockey term

The Loose Wheel said...

Proud of Joey, but that last angle might have backed up what Joey was saying. Think Kyle might have been trying to give Joey the bottom as there might have been a problem...

Charlie said...

I think Joey did good. Kyle has the reputation of having excellent restarts and you have to try to stick with him.

Nice pitch for the Cup race thats going on tomorrow...NOT

Daly Planet Editor said...

Wow, nice job. Thanks everyone, we will open the CWTS chat at 5:30PM today. Thanks for stopping by.

Hotaru1787 said...

Did they really have to follow SDDD with their cameras?

Anonymous said...

ESPN can advertise the Goode Family and Wipeout but can't bother to advertise the Cup race tomorrow at the same track? I really hope they leave their ego at the door when TNT comes.

Anonymous said...

@Anon 5:08pm - When was the last time FOX promoted an ESPN broadcast?

Hell, SPEED won't even mention who is doing the Nationwide races when they cover qualifying.

They ALL need to check up their egos and stop acting like they are the only ones doing race coverage.

A new post is up for your comments on the SPEED coverage of the Camping World Truck Series.

Thanks,
