Live Blogging Monday at LMS

Note: If your Fox local station leaves the NASCAR coverage, please go to our comments section and tell us your city.

Things change in a hurry in TV land, so this Monday is going to feature two TV networks scrambling all day long. SPEED is first with a one hour edition of RaceDay at 11AM ET. This will serve as the pre-race show, since NASCAR starts all rain delayed races as close to the top of the hour as possible.

That means when the NASCAR on Fox gang comes on the air at 12PM, they will be able to say hello and then the cars will hit the track. The full Fox crew returns led by Mike Joy in the announce booth with Darrell Waltrip and Larry McReynolds.

The Hollywood Hotel may or may not be back, but my guess is Chris Myers and Jeff Hammond should be on-board as usual. Myers dropped his comedy act on Sunday and led the TV team through some great discussions of NASCAR topics in the news. It was an eye-opener for those fans who argue that he is most effective in his assigned role as the class clown.

LMS has taken a lot of water and that normally means that the grassy area inside the frontstretch dogleg will be very damaging to the COT cars should they spin into it. We may well see careful racing because NASCAR is obligated to run the full 600 mile distance unless weather shortens the event after halfway.

No doubt there are some tired TV crew members on both the SPEED and Fox teams. Once the race is over, SPEED has some decisions to make. Originally scheduled for 8PM but taped in the early afternoon is This Week in NASCAR. Fox pit reporter Steve Byrnes is the host, with drivers Michael Waltrip and Marcos Ambrose as the panelists this week.

Also on tap is the Victory Lane show where host John Roberts interviews the winning driver and crew chief with Jimmy Spencer and Kenny Wallace. That program was scheduled for 11PM on Sunday and is not TBA in terms of air times. Perhaps, SPEED may be forced to put Victory Lane into the TWIN spot this week and just move on.

Fox is a broadcast TV network, not a cable outfit like SPEED. Most probably, the decision to show cartoons as standby programming during the rain delay and not NASCAR programming was driven by that issue. Some wonderful programs like Behind the Headsets and the SPEED broadcast of the All-Star race would have fit the bill, but the Fox local stations are used to cartoons in that timeslot. As previously mentioned, some West Cost viewers got to watch infomercials for two hours.

Monday is a new day and optimism is high that the race will be run. This post will serve to host your comments on the Fox broadcast of the rain-delayed Coca-Cola 600 and the RaceDay pre-race show. To add your TV-related opinion, just click on the comments button below.

TDP is a family-friendly website, please keep that in mind when posting. Thank you once again for taking the time to drop by.

ok, so this has been annoying me for a while but that taco bell commercial for the 88 cent whatever? i get what they're implying but stealing money from people -- even pennies! -- is wrong.

reminds of of the guy who presented a whole handful of very wet coins to me many years ago: a mall donation fountain was right in front of my store. the guy couldn't understand why i wouldn't accept his money.

sometimes, i just shake my head and wonder at what some ad folks think is "funny" or "clever" or "hip."

Reason it took me so long to get on... slow loading for my connection. Only just now back to 'normal loading speed'.

Pass me one of those Cokes on the table there! :)

Ken-Michigan said...

The story is the WEATHER !!

Daly Planet Editor said...

I am starting to think that SPEED might be the location that this race migrates, especially if it starts again after 3PM. That would push it into the news and possibly primetime on Fox.

Anonymous said...

Playing with the telestrator? In case anyone has forgotten, this actually is network television

Sophia said...

I'd rather listen to these guys than ANYTHING on tv today.

Coke and a Smile makes me think of Diggy Wiggy. A hilarious character a lady I know has made out of the blue.Long story.

Hey, it's looking better behind Chris and Jeff unless somebody photoCHOPPED a different scene? Parade of Jets!

didn't somebody mention SHAMWOW yesterday here on TDP..Chris just mentioned it in the booth. lol

Anonymous said...

So if they have to run the race tomorrow, does that mean all those important meetings are called off?

Hotaru1787 said...

Did they really say 'ShamWOW'? Good lord...

Anonymous said...

gee I have to say the announcers look uncomfortable today, especially Hammond. but they are doing what they can to get through this.

Sophia said...

@Dot

No Chocolate chip cookies today, no cc in the house. just brownies and we had company last night so down to one. May have to make another batch. :)

For those concerned with calories..they were diet brownies..no walnuts and no frosting :)

Hotaru1787 said...

No, nobody I know wants ANY digger merchandise...

Ridiculous!

Anonymous said...

Putting the Coca Cola 600 on SPEED would be almost like putting the Indy 500 on ESPN2. Oh wait, I think they have done that too.

Sophia said...

Uncovered the cars!! WOW.

JD that would stink if they move it to SPEED..I have it but not everybody does.

Daly Planet Editor said...

There are a lot of very big Fox local stations on the East Coast that would lose a ton of money if their afernoon local shows, local news and local 7PM shows were bumped.

Should be interesting.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Notice that both the video and audio together is taking hits. Probably the transmission pathway out of the speedway.

Hotaru1787 said...

And they're STILL giving out 'grades'.

Dot said...

My FOX has junk on until 5pm (8pm) the news. Then more junk until 8pm (11pm) when House is on.

Anonymous said...

If they gave Chidress a C wonder what they will say about Earnhard Gnassi or Petty. Maybe they will be saved by the green flag

Anonymous said...

I haven't seen any hits watching WNYW out of NY in HD via Direct TV....

JD said . . .

---

Pretty much all those big east coast affiliates, the ones that go by "Fox 5", owned and operated by News Corp. under the Fox Stations Group. Which thickens the plot even further . . .

Vince said...

Grand Rapids MI Fox station (WXMI) just switched to local programming. Judge Alex, who ever that is. Also went from HD to SD.

Charlie said...

Red are you talking about the taco commercial where they guy takes a penny out of a cup?
Here in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan 99% of all stores have a cup by the register with pennies in them. If you need a penny to complete your purchase you can take a penny. If you make a purchase and you get a few pennies in change you can drop the pennies in the cup. It all works out in the long run.

snlfan3 said...

bad thing about a small market, is that we are stuck with junk until 8:00 ET

e said...

Anon I wasn't referring to grade the teams, they don't need us to grade them, the championship and points system does that quite well. What I mean is if FOX really cared about fans they'd be wanting us to grade how well we enjoyed their coverage and their stupid cartoons.

Sophia said...

Charlie

We have the same penny container in MANY stores here in Ohio, too.

WOW love this OLD video of the 600..I am a sucker for all these old racing clips..never watched back then..course I was only 4 in 1960

Daly Planet Editor said...

If your Fox local TV station leaves NASCAR, please let us know.

Dot said...

Could they move it to FX? Reruns are on that channel.

bozo said...

do you think nascar will change the length of the race now? if they make it halfway and it rains again, what hour would they want to finish by?

Daly Planet Editor said...

Dot, they have already used SPEED when baseball ran long this season. I think that is the network of choice if things go sideways.

Daly Planet Editor said...

bozo, they cannot change the length. The only thing possible is that it rains out after halfway.

You cannot alter the length of a Sprint Cup Series race.

Newracefan said...

They are back in the cars

Daly Planet Editor said...

We are not going green with pit road like that...

Dot said...

Thanks JD.

We have the penny cup too in LV.

red said...

@charlie: the penny commercial, indeed. i get the concept and all but the penny cup is for those times when you're over/under by a penny -- not to walk all over town and snatch them up so you can buy something. b/c that behavior and commercial violates the intent and goodwill of said penny cup, it annoys me.

(plus, my loss prevention personality dislkes having any loose change or little bits of papers, etc., around a register. dishonest employees can and do keep track of the money they're taking from the till by using those devices. it's not as complicated or unlikely as it may seem at first blush. as i used to train: "ALL the money belongs IN the register at ALL times!")

bozo said...

this is their major race, how long will they wait, if the rain starts again at 3:00 and the radar shows 2 hours until is stops and it takes 2 hours to dry the track..will they wait and restart at 7:00 or is that too late? what is the latest time you think they will restart if they are past halfway already?

Anonymous said...

Bozo-

This the part on the back side of the ticket stub about how "Every effort will be made to complete the race to its advertised distance."

If they don't attempt to go 600 miles, Nascar and Bruton can wind up on the wrong side of a federal trade complaint about false advertsing.

stricklinfan82 said...

It was nice to see Fox let Chris Myers shed the comedy act for a minute and have a very intelligent argument with the booth regarding their team grades. We need a lot more of that in the future, in my opinion.

Vince said...

The rest of you still getting the race coverage? My local Fox affiliate (WXMI in Grand Rapids MI) switched to local programming at 1:53pm. Just in time for the last 5 min of Judge Alex. Now they are showing regularly scheduled programming, reruns of MASH. WTF!!

red said...

@bozo: i think if they get past halfway and the rain comes, they'll call it a day.
but this is nascar -- and tv: anything can happen, no matter how illiogical.

bozo said...

jd, wasn't there a race at a track with no lights that they said ok, this will now end at certain lap due to darkness and let eveyone know?

Ken-Michigan said...

Any sunshine is only going to make the area more unstable.

I'd expect more pop up showers at Lowes, therefore a LONG green flag run is coming up.....try to get to half way.

red said...

so, we had a competition yellow at lap 40, theoretically b/c the track was green. now we've had another storm and that track is green again. so do we get another competition yellow at about lap 120 or so?

Vince said...

Local affiliate just switched back to the race. Geez! You can tell the "subs" are maning the station today.

Dot said...

Re: pit road. Why wouldn't they put some kind of drainage just under the put wall? That way they could just sweep the water down the drain.

@ Vince, poor you. I'd say come over, but you're too far away.

Dot said...

Cooter's is known for some spicy hot Buffalo turds. I thought that was funny. Anybody ever have them?

Sophia said...

Vince

Is there a phone number to call your local tv station? Sometimes the news dept, if they have one, answers the phone but will pass on the message if there is just a skeleton crew working!!! Good luck!

I once got a guy in MASTER CONTROL on a sunday night..he was shocked how I got there but we ended up chatting 45 minutes about tv and issues with technology and digital upgrade! :)

having sense of humor and apologizing up front for being upset at the station can do wonders for garnering information.

The Loose Wheel said...

Ugh. Digger.

Lets get these next 320 laps in!!!

Vicky D said...

Here in Houston our local Fox station stayed with the Fox broadcast but it was so painful to watch that grading. Now Digger!

Sophia said...

The Loose Wheel said...

Daly Planet Editor said...

So, if we stay green what time do you think this puppy is going to be over? Come on, math types.

Dot said...

@ David, were you in LV or at Cooters?

Looks like JJ is having a good run now.

Daly Planet Editor said...

boyd, under a dollar...don't ask me how I know that.

Newracefan said...

Chad swears SDDD on 7 cylinders, we can only hope

Anonymous said...

5:30pm ET is my guess, assuming no more rain

The Loose Wheel said...

I was in Vegas. Best friend and I were on the strip for the day.

JD, my best guess at this pace...without rain we're looking at probably 3 hours 30 to 45 minutes. So just before 6 est.

Daly Planet Editor said...

If Vitor's car had spun the other way, he would have bigger problems than some smushed bones. The guy that caused that should be suspended for sure.

The Loose Wheel said...

NRF if thats the case then that 18 is BAD FAST!

Charlie said...

Just saw that taco bell commercial all the way through and never noticed how he got the pennies. I always just saw the last part where he took one penny.
I agree with you Red. That is a bad commercial.

The Loose Wheel said...

Also...under a dollar here they still tax it JD...

Dot said...

JR/Jr needs 4 hands. Or, maybe Clint can loan him the Hamburger Helper hand.

Vicky D said...

JD - you got that right about Vitor.

Hotaru1787 said...

Bad fast? SDDD? *shudders*

The Loose Wheel said...

No excuse for not having a Bliss interview tho

red said...

as much as he's my driver and i'd love to see that car do well . . . i could almost wish the 88 would blow and engine so dale can climb out and just go home.

that beast is running seriously ugly and wicked bad!

boyd said...

After the success Kesolowski had at Talladega, and the fact that Bliss won the Busch race they would talk with him

Daly Planet Editor said...

halfway to halfway....

Dot said...

Bet you a Taco Bell burrito we miss the lead change.

Daly Planet Editor said...

David, maybe that driveline vibration was caused by having no tires to put on the car.....

The Loose Wheel said...

Nah Dot, he isnt catching him that fast. About a tenth a lap

boyd said...

@ Dot
lol, you can deliver that burrito to DFW.

bozo said...

hendrick has to be looking at a switch this season, i guess he might wait until they have no chance for the chase, but should do it next week

The Loose Wheel said...

Maybe that driveline vibration was caused by putting the car in gear and driving it a few laps...

I knew on thursday they werent going to run though.

Aven said...

I think the 88 driver has "helped" the engine blow in the past when things weren't going well for him.

Sophia said...

Darn it. got a snack and spoke with room mate (who does NOT LIKE DIGGER but only watches NASCAR sometimes) and missed the 88 cent commercial.

Vicky D said...

Dot - you have me laughing about the burrito. They sure had plenty of time to interview Bliss unless he went home with his NW trophy tucked under his arm.

Dot said...

Oops, I was wrong. Place your orders.

The Loose Wheel said...

Phoenix, AZ Dot.

eaglesoars said...

Oh No Jr a lap down!

West Coast Diane said...

Jr...being lapped by SDDD. So glad we didn't stop to watch this race. I'm depressed.

Dot said...

@ David, thanks for the clarification.

Has anybody been to Cooters?

Caution any lap now. JR/Jr a lap down.

Vicky D said...

Lots of cars moving up - who is moving backwards besides JR?

red said...

so, is chad right: is the 18 down a cylinder or not? if so, the tires might not be the issue -- he might be "bad fast", in preparation for blowing up.

Sophia said...

I forget what it is but blogger has made changes. I went to add photos to a blog last night and some preview things looked different. Can't remember now.

but I noticed. :)

What did they say about the weather

boyd said...

Time for the JR. caution.

The Loose Wheel said...

#00 moving back, lots of faders just stabilized after losing 3 or 4 spots

The Loose Wheel said...

Chad has a history of lying to JJ to motivate him. The 18 is fine and turning excellent laps. No possible way he would be able to run that fast on 7 cylinders. Also if it were blowing up Kyle would be blowing up on the radio. Remember the All-Star last year when he was on 7. Got killed down the straight, was great in the corners. this car is great everywhere

Hotaru1787 said...

Any good news for SDDD is bad news to me.

Just like Saturday night, let's hope something happens to the car.

boyd said...

Not a Busch fan, (can someone clue me in on the SDDD) but he's the modern day Waltrip.
Remember when he was Jaws?

Dot said...

Vickers in the lead????

Vicky D said...

I guess we missed the pass for the lead plus JPM has really moved up.

Dot said...

OK, I was just late about missing the lead change. And, the wrong driver.

Hotaru1787 said...

boyd- SDDD stands for Shrubba-Dubba-Ding-Dong. (give me credit for coming up with that one!)

The Loose Wheel said...

John Paul Montana...

red said...

@david: thanks for the clarification. chad is a master motivator and young mr busch has proven that he will "exaggerate" to mess with his competitors' heads from time to time.

i was hoping someone at the track was with us and could tell us what they hear/don't hear as the 18 passes by 'cause a blown cylinder makes one ugly sound. but sometimes, it just does run faster right before it blows up in a mess of steam, fluids and parts.

The Loose Wheel said...

Red...we wouldnt need it because DW would have a panic attack if that car even sounded a single octive off...

boyd said...

Thanks H R-6.

Glenn said...

Wow, they didn't cover the 88 pit stop. Haven't even mentioned it.

Dot said...

How does the driver know that the black flag is for him? Lord knows they never heed the blue flag.

red said...

Glenn said...
Wow, they didn't cover the 88 pit stop. Haven't even mentioned it.

nor should they: team just isn't competitive so far today.
and again, he's my driver, gang. just calling it as i see it from here.

The Loose Wheel said...

Dot when they black flag you they have a number board that is at the front of the flag stand and it shows your car number. Thus the phrase "The #xx car is being posted for the black flag"

Vicky D said...

Dot I think Nascar flashes the car's number somewhere under the flagstand.

Ken-Michigan said...

JD -

If it stays green or with minimal caution periods, race "could" be over 5:15 - 5:30 eastern.

we'll see how close we are.

The Loose Wheel said...

I love this tracker!!!!

Anonymous said...

Listening to the booth--there's a lot going on.

Watching the picture: we don't see any of it.

This is the problem with how TV covers these races, and why people watching TV claim they're boring.

Dot said...

@ David & VickyD, thank you.

Hotaru1787 said...

Am I the only one bored right now?

boyd said...

Count me as a little bored.

Looking at the radar there's a cell coming from the southeast that could be there in 30-45 minutes if it holds together.

Hotaru1787 said...

Hotaru1787 said...

Hotaru1787 said...

Now Brian. WTH?

The Loose Wheel said...

Tony just stalking his way up through the field...

bozo said...

wouldn't one of the first things you would do if your driver couldn't hear you is to check the other channels?

Hey drunk idiots, 'moment of silence' means NOT chanting "USA" or screaming when you see the flag. That's the whole point of "silence". Way to be respectful.

Interesting move by Nascar though. I like it.

Did Jimmie Johnson's car have to be pushed again?

Sophia said...

I had not had on media so did not know about Pres Obama's 3pm request. That was moving and awesome.

Way to go NASCAR. With all the problems in getting this race on..does put things into perspective.

Noticed somebody needed a push restart with the big truck. who was that?

Newracefan said...

48 had no clue, so I'm betting no one did

Anonymous said...

Tony knew in advance and had a flag in his car that he waved. His crew didn't know though. Tony just said that was one of the coolest things he's ever seen and Darien said he still had chill bumps.

Photojosh said...

I have a feeling that it was something planned for a mid-race caution. They knew one would happen at some point.

If it was pre planned as just a "stop the race" thing, they would have notified the teams like a competition caution.

bevo said...

Hoots came on radio said it was his fault for not warning crew chiefs in advance. Apologized but said some things are more important than racing. Thanked everyone many times for cooperating

Hotaru1787 said...

I was wondering 'bout JJ... the car wasn't moving.

Anonymous said...

it was absolutely the right thing to do. NASCAR just proved (rather surprisingly) that they realize that there are things more important in the world than they are. I think you'll find this tribute was done at just about every sporting event today. Very Classy move.

batchief said...

Yes Matt, the answer is yes.

Dot said...

Yes JJ had to be pushed, Chad is worried that if he stalls on Pit Road they are screwed and no saving fuel by turning it off either.

Photojosh said...

Interesting. I didn't know about the 3pm thing. Perhaps I was wrong.

Still strange if they didn't notify people.

red said...

matt, i understand your point and i know you understand nascar's in this decision. it will inevitably effect the race once we re-start (and the 48 gets another push start!) but bottom line for me?

it was a classy gesture, meant to show honor and respect to our military and i support that. and i know you do as well.

Dot said...

Re; bevo's comment. What was Hoots doing during the rain delay that he couldn't give the teams a heads up?

I had heard about the moment of silence (for the nation) a couple of days ago. I didn't know it would affect the race. Too cool.

@ bevo, I previewed and saw your comment. So he said sorry. No excuse after an hour of red flag.

Good for you hotaru that David got his lap back. I didn't think that caution would count for that.
