Live Blogging Monday at LMS

Note: If your Fox local station leaves the NASCAR coverage, please go to our comments section and tell us your city.

Things change in a hurry in TV land, so this Monday is going to feature two TV networks scrambling all day long. SPEED is first with a one hour edition of RaceDay at 11AM ET. This will serve as the pre-race show, since NASCAR starts all rain delayed races as close to the top of the hour as possible.

That means when the NASCAR on Fox gang comes on the air at 12PM, they will be able to say hello and then the cars will hit the track. The full Fox crew returns led by Mike Joy in the announce booth with Darrell Waltrip and Larry McReynolds.

The Hollywood Hotel may or may not be back, but my guess is Chris Myers and Jeff Hammond should be on-board as usual. Myers dropped his comedy act on Sunday and led the TV team through some great discussions of NASCAR topics in the news. It was an eye-opener for those fans who argue that he is most effective in his assigned role as the class clown.

LMS has taken a lot of water and that normally means that the grassy area inside the frontstretch dogleg will be very damaging to the COT cars should they spin into it. We may well see careful racing because NASCAR is obligated to run the full 600 mile distance unless weather shortens the event after halfway.

No doubt there are some tired TV crew members on both the SPEED and Fox teams. Once the race is over, SPEED has some decisions to make. Originally scheduled for 8PM but taped in the early afternoon is This Week in NASCAR. Fox pit reporter Steve Byrnes is the host, with drivers Michael Waltrip and Marcos Ambrose as the panelists this week.

Also on tap is the Victory Lane show where host John Roberts interviews the winning driver and crew chief with Jimmy Spencer and Kenny Wallace. That program was scheduled for 11PM on Sunday and is not TBA in terms of air times. Perhaps, SPEED may be forced to put Victory Lane into the TWIN spot this week and just move on.

Fox is a broadcast TV network, not a cable outfit like SPEED. Most probably, the decision to show cartoons as standby programming during the rain delay and not NASCAR programming was driven by that issue. Some wonderful programs like Behind the Headsets and the SPEED broadcast of the All-Star race would have fit the bill, but the Fox local stations are used to cartoons in that timeslot. As previously mentioned, some West Cost viewers got to watch infomercials for two hours.

Monday is a new day and optimism is high that the race will be run. This post will serve to host your comments on the Fox broadcast of the rain-delayed Coca-Cola 600 and the RaceDay pre-race show. To add your TV-related opinion, just click on the comments button below.

TDP is a family-friendly website, please keep that in mind when posting. Thank you once again for taking the time to drop by.

I am surprised the guys in the booth aren't getting coffee by I.V.

I love racing but I am so out of the mood. :)

They prolly are giving meyers and hammond red bull to get them back up to speed

with or without the 0.4 micrograms of cocaine per liter?!?

PammH said...

I am shocked my local station has stuck w/the race (Detroit)

Newracefan said...

Red, Is there a redbull connection to Mayfields Allsport sponser? I thought I heard that somewhere

Anonymous said...

KPTM FOX 42 Omaha NE just pulled the plug on the NASCAR coverage. The bottom of the screen says they will return to NASCAR coverage only if the race is restarted. Otherwise is appears that race updates are done for the day unless they are told the race will restart.

Unknown said...

lol red - i had to search for that story and read it - very interesting.

Someone said if it was anyone but reutiman they would have called it, hate to say it but your prolly right

Hotaru1787 said...

Lighting here in Orlando... gonna unplug my computer if it gets too bad.

HMcP said...

Color me impressed - local Fox news in Minneapolis is doing PIP with the rainy race in order to cover a major local story and its live press conference (runaway mother and cancer stricken son return to the state or somesuch) -- in this market it seems a no brainer to completely dump-- oh, nevermind, someone was watching me type and now i get PIP of the sheriff and video of the family. Whee.

Anonymous said...

The sun goes down in about two+ hours in Charlotte, and if the storms do clear, then the track might take longer to dry, which would make it VERY difficult to continue.

Anonymous said...

I am beyond shocked they're waiting this long!!!!
any theories?

red said...

nrf: haven't herd that one but it would be just too beautiful a coincidence, doncha think? will see what i can track down.

so, now that they're showing all these great memorial day film packages, i have to wonder when -- if ever -- we would have seen them without the red flag delays.

or are they showing on the military broadcasts overseas only?

Hotaru1787 said...

I'm suprised with all this severe weather in Orlando, our station is stiil with NASCAR.

Daly Planet Editor said...

The TV folks have nothing to say about the issue. It is only NASCAR and they are obligated to try and get the race in. This last shower should put the whammy on it because of the standing water.

Vicky D said...

I sure hope they announce Reut as the winner shortly.

Anonymous said...

Denver Fox says it is planning to do local news in one hour.

SonicAD said...

PammH: WJBK is a Fox owned and operated station, so they'll stick with it for certain.

Anonymous said...

They might want Shrub to win since he's led the most laps, or Kahne who won last year.

Anonymous said...

based on the line at Reut's car I'd say it's over

Mike said...

We're starting to get to the time of day when some Fox affiliates would like to be possibly doing some local news.

The J said...

now the credits on the ticker, yep this is gettin called very shortly

snlfan3 said...

Fox doing credits on the crawl may be over

The J said...

that is ironic, 500 AND 600 possibly shortened in same year

Hotaru1787 said...

See ya (lightning)

Newracefan-

AllSport has a rather funny history. It used to be made by Pepsi to compete with Gatorade. But then Pepsi bought Gatorade, so AllSport was sold off and is now an independent.

Anonymous said...

I'm going to disagree on the imminent call, PRN not updating until 6:30 EST

Anonymous said...

I think it was 2003 where both the Daytona 500 and Coca-Cola were both rain shortened as well.

Vicky D said...

Mikey looks like the Cheshire cat.

Anonymous said...

boy kyle will be ticked..he wanted to stay out. still can't believe they all went into the pits.. the rain is falling harder

Anonymous said...

WOW I went to work before the race started - hubby has tried to keep up reading here & watching race - he fell asleep a few times! Now I'm home & the race is still on, in rain delay.

The J said...

c'mon nascar, just call it already

Anonymous said...

I assume Mikey and/or Reut will be making all the TV rounds this week selling rented furniture and auto parts and hotel rooms and whatever else they sell.

Anonymous said...

well the coke 600 lives up to it's name "Nascar's longest race'

The Loose Wheel said...

DW needs to stop calling this over because he will look mighty stupid if it gets going again.

Mike said...

If it's been called, they'll wait until about 6:27 to announce it. However, DW needs to quit acting like it's a foregone conclusion that Reutimann has already won.

J_Fellenbaum said...

They've got realistically until 7 or 7:30 to wait for the rain to stop. That gets your started back up around 9 or 9:30.

That gives you a finish around 11pm.

Anonymous said...

this is amusing, long pauses on the FOX broadcast, they're probably monitoring race control, and jumping at every transmission

Vicky D said...

Oh the agony! C'mon call the race now.

HMcP said...

I should be happy, right? I am a Robby Gordon fan for Christmas' sake.

Still feel a bit cheated after all this. It was a nice day today :(((((

Anonymous said...

I think nascar just doesn't like DW, they want to make him look like a fool, lol

Sophia said...

poor fans....EVERYBODY KNOWS its bogus at this point.

How come some races are called so QUICKLY??

Wasn't the Daytona called quicker than this one??

SHEESH

The J said...

DW wants this called so bad not just because his brothers team would win, but that he also gave Reut his big break in the trucks, it would be a double win for him

bevo said...

If the guys in the booth are so eager to go just let them, I'm sure there are some young tv guys who would love to do the job.

Anonymous said...

Well, you can only get so wet.

Anonymous said...

well Cousin Carl thinks it's over

Anonymous said...

wow nice sigh there by someone in the booth, I'd imagine tensions are getting high between TV crews and NASCAR. I want to see a race as much as the next guy, but I don't understand what they're doing here. Awaiting a rain tire experiment?

red said...

wow, cousin carl's ready to go home. wonder if jack will tell him to suck it up, get his butt back in the seat and do what rousch pays him to do?

Anonymous said...

Drivers, TV crew, pit crew members are all ready to go home.

Anonymous said...

Carl Edwards in street clothes!?! Thats interesting

Sophia said...

Indeed good finish for me. Reut 1st, Newman 2nd, Robby Gordon 3rd :)

Dale Jr 40th..not great.

bevo said...

@David- that is a perfect set up for a comment but I'm going to resist

Newracefan said...

Even if they did try to race it will take at least 2 hrs to dry the track, Carl's suit will be clean a dry by then

Richard in N.C. said...

I figure NASCAR is likely to take longer to call World 600 since it is so much more centrally located in NASCAR territory than Daytona.

Mike said...

I'm convinced they've started to pack up the Hollywood Hotel.

Haus14 said...

carl in street clothes is not a big deal...even if they go back to green, they aren't going back for at least 2 hrs...plenty of time to get changed again.

Daly Planet Editor said...

No doubt NASCAR is hearing it from the TV gang, but they make their own decisions for their own set of reasons.

Mike said...

If you start seeing a Fox pit person and a PRN person getting in position, then it'll be obvious we're only seconds away from an official announcement.

I'll stick with a 6:25p.m. announcement.

BOZO said...

6;30 MUST BE THE CALL TIME

Anonymous said...

LOL Joy commenting on blue sky to south, DW's crack comment about memorial day

why do i keep hearing david hill's "tough!" in my ears?

Jeff Burton in street clothes...

Anonymous said...

Where are you seeing the World 600, on ESPN Classic?

The Coca Cola 600 is on Fox today.

Dot said...

I'm back.

I'm surprised that they're stopping the race since Reut is first and Robby Gordon is 3rd. Didn't think we'd have 2 Odd Wads winning in the same weekend.

Sophia said...

tatipapis just said CONGRATS to the 00 team and time to take care of her babies. on Twitter. Max's wife

WHY are WE NOT BEING TOLD??

red said...

and here's the dale conundrum in the propverbial nutshell: if he appeared in street clothes like cousin carl and the mayor, jeff burton, folks would be screaming all about it. anyone else and it's treated the way it should be: no big deal.

Sophia said...

KPetty tweeting same thing. gonna call it. 00 congrats

Mike said...

A PRN guy is getting in position by Reutimann.

Anonymous said...

How did Dale JR go from 40th (where he was most of the rain delay) to 38th?!

Anonymous said...

why hasn't fox had someone on from NASCAR to tell us what they are thinking?

Vicky D said...

Maybe the delay is Nascar trying to figure out how to get Jr. a win today! LOL

Anonymous said...

how did all those people come into the pits given the radar

Sophia said...

Pretty sad that over hyped/over used/made fun of Twitter gets the news FIRST!

Anonymous said...

Reutimann wins!!

red said...

mike, you are a GENIUS!

The J said...

FINALLY!!!! woohoo REUTI!!!

Anonymous said...

I'm surprised that they're stopping the race since Reut is first and Robby Gordon is 3rd. Didn't think we'd have 2 Odd Wads winning in the same weekend.

Given Reutimann's performance this year, he is hardly an "Odd Wad."

Anonymous said...

finally official. I was checking my fantasy picks and I picked Reuti in a few of them :)

Anonymous said...

FINALLY!
ITS OVER!
Way to go, Reut!

Anonymous said...

Does anyone know how long that red flag was for?

Vicky D said...

Congrats to Reut & Mikey.

ok, the guys sliding in the grass was cute...

So glad for Reut & MWR. No living with these guys this week.

anon@6:24: didn't come in on the last pit stop, same way reut captured the win.

boyd said...

This may be the longest time I've ever watched a NASCAR race.

Anonymous said...

Pretty sad that over hyped/over used/made fun of Twitter gets the news FIRST!

Anyone can write anything on Twitter.

It wasn't called until David Hoots called it at 6:26.

Anonymous said...

How fun ... KPTM FOX Omaha NE come back to action after watching Everybody Loves Raymond when they winning interview is nearly over.

Haus14 said...

There has got to be a better way to do these delays / early race endings

Mike said...

I think they knew at 6:10 that it was over.....but this fits better for television....call it at 6:25, gives them 5 minutes to interview the winner and go off the air at 6:30.

bevo said...

Well good for the Fox guys, now they can go home! I know it's really hard just like roofing in Texas in August or doing road construction for 12 straight hours. Hope they have enough time to recover in time for Dover.

Sophia said...

THE ENDLESS 600

Race that went on forever, in the shortest amount of miles.

WHEW! Congrats David Reutimann and MWR!! :)

Anonymous said...

still an issue for nascar, the only major sport where something like this could happen for a "major" event

Newracefan said...

JD how about a live TWIN at 8 following VL at 7

Thanks folks! That was either a day to remember or a day to forget.

There is a new column up for your comments on today's coverage on both SPEED and Fox.

Thanks again and see you next week!

this really is bad, that the 2 most prestigious races go well short of their distances, and indy will probably be another disaster.

Sophia said...

No offense but Max Papis wife on twitter is the real deal. She'd hardly MAKE UP STUFF

I am SURE the drivers knew before we did.

No way I believed this was called at 6.30

Glad it's over. Long weekend for all involved.

ESPECIALLY fans in the stands

am19psu said...

the only major sport where something like this could happen for a "major" event

How quickly we forget the 2008 World Series...

Daly Planet Editor said...

I will update the TV sched when I get it, probably Victory Lane at 8PM but I would suggest tuning to SPEED right now.

Ken said...

2 races this weekend at Charlotte and no real race winners. Meaningless weekend and a waste of time.

Dot said...

@ Anon 6:26, Odd Wad isn't really a bad term. Reut is a driver that doesn't get picked to win. Any driver who isn't covered to death (SDDD, etc) is an Odd Wad.

Anonymous said...

You guys act like rain at races is something new. Its something NASCAR had delt with for years. In fact, over the years it has become better with the invention of jet dryers. YOU CANNOT COMPARE STICK AND BALL SPORTS TO NASCAR! we say this all the time!

Kyle wanted to stay out...shoulda coulda woulda.

Congrats for Reuti, hope he backs it up with another with this year!

Im proud of NASCAR for sticking it out as long as they did. They may not have made many friends today but they sure impressed the heck out of me!

stricklinfan82 said...

Major thanks to NASCAR for hanging in there so long before calling the race.

Major thanks to the on-site TV crew for hanging in there.

And major kudos to the Fox television network for staying with the race through its conclusion. It sure is a stark contrast to compare Fox hanging in there for the race fans through 6:30 PM on a Monday evening to their counterparts at ABC who immediately dump everything NASCAR the second a race runs one minute past their scheduled off time.

Despite some of their previously noted behind-the-scenes shortcomings it is definitely nice to have a network that the NASCAR fans know they can always count on to hang in there through thick and thin. Thanks a lot Fox.

Mike said...

The thing is even though they're big events, the Daytona 500 and Coca-Cola 600 are part of a season. You really can't treat them any differently than other races. Just because they're bigger events, it doesn't mean they HAVE to go the scheduled distance in instances like this.

no 2008 world series they played out after blowing it the previous year on the allstar game tie game - selig said he would never let it happen during their "major" event - playoffs, or world series

Love the site JD. Great work Robby :) great for Operation Homefront as well, I think Robby said on Trackside he giving $25,000 (maybe more now) of his own money to them. This should be a good momentum boost for RGM (hopefully), Congrats to Reutimann on his first win, nice to see him finally get one and big race no less. A pure race car driver for sure. Classy tribute our heroes today that was awesome and we should do it more often. Finally glad it has come to an end have a great memorial day everyone , Thank you to all our brave Men and Women who are serving or who have ever served our country, God Bless America

anon@6:33: since nascar has had to deal with rain issues for years, why does it seem that they still don't have a solid plan in place to implement when weather becomes a factor? this race should have been called at leaast an hour ago.

i don't want the "well, the paying fans want to see the whole race" answer b/c i've been there and sat thru a rain delay, only to have it cancelled. and that ticked me off bigtime. i would have much rather they called it earlier so that i could drive home, get into dry clothes, have an adult beverage or two, get some sleep and be ready to drive back that monday.

sitting at a track, waiting for the rain that you see all around you to mystically stop ain't no fun.

nascar should have called it around 5 or so and been done with it.

Karen said...

Reut missed his time in the winner's circle, I'm assuming. Same thing with no interview and not seeing winner's circle when he won his first NW race.

Sophia said...

thanks Jojaye. I will miss the guys on TWIN but totally understand.

for some reason the 4:3 ratio tv in my room NO LONGER can see much of the crawl/ticker on the bottom. usually don't care but if they are giving messages important, kind of irritating.

HD format I guess as other stations crawls work just FINE *foxnews, cnn, etc*
