Live Blogging Monday at LMS

Note: If your Fox local station leaves the NASCAR coverage, please go to our comments section and tell us your city.

Things change in a hurry in TV land, so this Monday is going to feature two TV networks scrambling all day long. SPEED is first with a one hour edition of RaceDay at 11AM ET. This will serve as the pre-race show, since NASCAR starts all rain delayed races as close to the top of the hour as possible.

That means when the NASCAR on Fox gang comes on the air at 12PM, they will be able to say hello and then the cars will hit the track. The full Fox crew returns led by Mike Joy in the announce booth with Darrell Waltrip and Larry McReynolds.

The Hollywood Hotel may or may not be back, but my guess is Chris Myers and Jeff Hammond should be on-board as usual. Myers dropped his comedy act on Sunday and led the TV team through some great discussions of NASCAR topics in the news. It was an eye-opener for those fans who argue that he is most effective in his assigned role as the class clown.

LMS has taken a lot of water and that normally means that the grassy area inside the frontstretch dogleg will be very damaging to the COT cars should they spin into it. We may well see careful racing because NASCAR is obligated to run the full 600 mile distance unless weather shortens the event after halfway.

No doubt there are some tired TV crew members on both the SPEED and Fox teams. Once the race is over, SPEED has some decisions to make. Originally scheduled for 8PM but taped in the early afternoon is This Week in NASCAR. Fox pit reporter Steve Byrnes is the host, with drivers Michael Waltrip and Marcos Ambrose as the panelists this week.

Also on tap is the Victory Lane show where host John Roberts interviews the winning driver and crew chief with Jimmy Spencer and Kenny Wallace. That program was scheduled for 11PM on Sunday and is not TBA in terms of air times. Perhaps, SPEED may be forced to put Victory Lane into the TWIN spot this week and just move on.

Fox is a broadcast TV network, not a cable outfit like SPEED. Most probably, the decision to show cartoons as standby programming during the rain delay and not NASCAR programming was driven by that issue. Some wonderful programs like Behind the Headsets and the SPEED broadcast of the All-Star race would have fit the bill, but the Fox local stations are used to cartoons in that timeslot. As previously mentioned, some West Cost viewers got to watch infomercials for two hours.

Monday is a new day and optimism is high that the race will be run. This post will serve to host your comments on the Fox broadcast of the rain-delayed Coca-Cola 600 and the RaceDay pre-race show. To add your TV-related opinion, just click on the comments button below.

TDP is a family-friendly website, please keep that in mind when posting. Thank you once again for taking the time to drop by.

How is it that Tony knew to have a flag with him but others did not?

Nascar thank you for that caution. Being a 30yr vet it brought tears to me. Thank you for that moment for those who are not here today

Can we get 28 laps of caution before the rain.

Tony didn't say how he knew, but Darien said now I know why you asked for that flag in the car and Tony said yep that was why.

Please pour before they get to 200 so we see the whole race

@Dot- I imagine it just slipped everyone's mind with all of the chaos trying to get the race going. He has a lot of stuff to deal with. It was the proper thing to do and I think we should all cut them some slack for this. Remember what the day is for.

stricklinfan82 said...

Has anyone at Fox even noticed what happened to Brian Vickers on that last stop? It's bad enough that the lack of a triple-pit didn't let us see the leader's entire stop to catch the problem live, but to me that's a major development in this race that has gone virtually unnoticed.

I love all of the wonderful moments of the broadcast honoring our Military members. This is always an emotional weekend.

Was it just me, or were there sprinkles on the lense?

The race coverage has sucked so far. Just end it and put us out of our misery. My radio affiliate doesn't have the race on either.

could be they wanted it so if they win the race..

I expect FOX to throw the race on SPEED, once or IF it restarts.

This rain will last a while

red said...

anon@3:13: word is that nascar handed flags to each car before the race without telling them why. not sure if that's the same as the one tony held up in that in-car shot.

Newracefan said...

Another red flag, too bad the charger/battery on the drill is shot or we could finish that little project. Bummer (I think)

@ bevo, I concede.

@ lou

I second all Red said re: your service.

just a little bit of dampness. Watch - it'll rain 2 inches.

Anonymous said...

If NASCAR would have just thrown the green flag instead of waiting for rain, they would have gotten to halfway.

Anonymous said...

Carl Edwards on the radio says turns 1-2 are soaked, 3-4 just a little dampness.

Ken-Michigan said...

FOX is really trying to stuff alot of network commercials in before they say good bye.

bevo said...

@Dot- Sorry, just read my comment and it doesn't read the way I meant it to. I didn't mean for it to come across as argumentative, just saying that listening to him on the officials channel he was very apologetic about the last-minute nature of it. He sounded like he lost track of what time it was. He was really hard on himself for it. Kept on mentioning how important stopping, turning off the engines and standing at attention was. He repeatedly thanked everyone for their understanding.

bozo said...

they are 20 laps away, they have to wait this out, they won't reschedule this for another day..

although given that this is a major race for them, they should try to get it to the 600 miles..

Daly Planet Editor said...

It is a must carry, but there has to be a off-time window. I would guess that is either 5 ot 6PM ET.

Hotaru1787 said...

I think red had his Davids confused.

It was Tony and Reut. Tony passed him pretty close earlier and Reut bumped him afterwards. Tony was pissed that it was way too early in the race for bumping, etc... Looks like they talked it out b/c they both had smiles on thier faces when they walked away.

Mike said...

I believe Tony's biggest problem was the crewmember getting his mouth going.

red said...

hey now! finally catching up on the 83.

thanks for joining us, fox. too bad you still haven't told us what happened!?!

Anonymous said...

Reutimann seems to be doing just fine without Tony's advice.

Then again, Tony hasn't always followed it himself.

Daly Planet Editor said...

David, makes no difference. The sports department does not run the network, this is not cable.

That has been the biggest problem with the new contract. You can see that some Fox stations have already left the broadcast.

This event is costing the local stations dearly because they buy and sell their own shows during the local dayparts.

If I had it to do, I would have moved this to SPEED. Especially with the forecast for rain.

Anonymous said...

Billy Badbutt - hilarious!

After that happened on the track earlier, Tony told his spotter to go tell Reut to remind him of the long race and then said he really likes the kid a lot but he needs to just remember the long race - so I think Tony had good intentions by talking to Reut.

Sophia said...

@red
see folks still think you think & write like a man.:)

Ok I muted this annoying commercial earlier..just caught it was BK..man that character is creepy.

bozo said...

have to do some work, now i'll have to sync up the tivo to the tdp blog as i watch it... who would have thought it would come to that

The Loose Wheel said...

Ah. Well they need to make a decision then because if this runs its entire distance its gonna run into east coast prime time. Either get a simulcast on SPEED going now or make a decision across the board.

stricklinfan82 said...

red,

Would you agree that we would have never had the problem with not knowing about the 83's pit stop if the production truck had just made the very elementary decision to show the leader's pit stop in its entirety via the triple-pit split? This one-box with 3-4 second snippets of various pit stops is terribly inadequate and hopefully the 83 incident will finally open their eyes.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Dot, once the starter is broken, it's broken.

Vicky D said...

Lots and lots of empty seats in the corners. Maybe they've already gone home to watch the race on tv.

boyd said...

Vicky
You ever sit in an aluminum seat at a track in the rain? It's miserable when the sun comes out.

The Loose Wheel said...

boyd, they dont have aluminum bleacher type seats at LMS. They are stadium style seating

boyd said...

David,
My bad. At TMS they are aluminum, and hard.

Dot said...

Thanks JD. Not mechanically inclined.

They should talk about that with the cut away car.

red said...

strick: i'm already on that band wagon with you! i detest the 1-box pit stop nonsense. triple-box pit stops are the only intelligent way to handle it and i cannot fathom why fox refuses to use it.

yeah, i know, jd: e --- g --- o. pathetic.

there's no reason to not have used some of the endless time they had in the red flag to explain what happened to the 83 -- none at all. that was a very big miss by the truck. very big.

The Loose Wheel said...

boyd, write Bruton and Gossage a letter...bet they fix it in a hurry lol

I have to comment on stewart's interview. He didn't want reutimann to race hard with him, but he raced hard with reut...Must not race with the great stewart. Why did stewart race so hard at that point if it was wrong? I thought this was called auto racing, not "let the great one through".

Anonymous said...

Any one remember when Kurt was the bad Busch.

Yes, but then he grew up.

Boyd, guess it would definitely be more comfortable going home and watching the race sitting in their own lazyboys.

The Loose Wheel said...

Annon, perhaps thats why the crew guy kissed the ground tony walked on?

boyd said...

It's an official race now!

stricklinfan82 said...

red,

This Fox pit road coverage issue reminds me of Fox's scoring crawl issue last year. We called and called for Fox to dump the 1997 outdated scoring crawl technology and adopt the ESPN real-time GPS scoring crawl. When Fox finally decided the address the issue they couldn't stomach adopting ESPN's method, they had to instead roll out a new 1-10, 1-10, 1-43, 1-10, 1-10, 1-43 outdated information crawl as their attempt to provide "accurate" scoring information.

You just hope they'll come around to convention at some point with pit road and the finish line like they did with the crawl, in the meantime it's just frustrating to watch Fox's production truck's continued pursuit of being inadequate just for the sake of being different from everyone else.

Hotaru1787 said...

Judge Judy and shows like that are big money for local affiliates. Can't blame them for making the decisions they do.

Fox should have picked SPEED for today's race.

red said...

stricklinfan: what i can't get my head wrapped around is the "why" of it all. i wonder if the production team watches full replays of the entire race on mondays. i mean, the best way to learn is to review one's performance and watching the full replay could provide insight, especially if partnered with comments pulled from various blogs from during the race.

then again, if you have david hill saying "tough!" to the fans, why expect there would be a desire to improve or think about new ways to handle a race broadcast? the attitude comes from the top and it is very clearly not an attitude of professionalism, in my opinion.

but, even tho' my head hurts from banging it against this particular wall, i'll keep on b/c someday, someone might just say "hey! i just had a GREAT idea for this week's race . . . "

i can hope, can't i?

Mike said...

Back in the 1990s, Fox made its name and picked up bigtime affiliates buying sports contracts - NFL, baseball, then Nascar and the college football bowl games. There were CBS affiliates that switched to Fox simply because they wanted to keep carrying the NFL.

While they will switch to SPEED or FX when they need to, I think they have a different view of the relative role of sports in their network than the others might.

good thing he can drive himself home and not have a long flight ahead of him.

@dot: i have to (finally) agree. this decision belongs to mr h alone and both jrs have said they'll be fine with whatever he decides to do on their behalf.

@h-rb6: i also agree. he's my driver and they're my team but i wish everyone would just shut the (bleep) up and let them work without all the (figurative) spotlights shining in their faces.

re: Jr. There's engineers, car chief, whoever also on the 88. Why blame it all on Jr. and Tony, Jr.?

Maybe. I hope they do.

i remain optimistic lisa. if we get past lap 300 and it starts getting dark, and we get bumped to SPEED and it rains, they might pull the plug. I think everyone still feels its wayyyy too early to pull the plug on this. The ratings for this are going to suck, NASCAR fully knew that after it washed yesterday...

I've just never liked Justin...Or Kyle Busch.

Or Reutimann.

Or Junior.

What can Mr. H do? Split up a team that has wins like the other 3 cars have?
How putting Kes. in the car?

Don't knock the southern people, if not for us, there would be no NASCAR. Addington is from South Carolina,so am I.
