Live Blogging Monday at LMS

Note: If your Fox local station leaves the NASCAR coverage, please go to our comments section and tell us your city.

Things change in a hurry in TV land, so this Monday is going to feature two TV networks scrambling all day long. SPEED is first with a one hour edition of RaceDay at 11AM ET. This will serve as the pre-race show, since NASCAR starts all rain delayed races as close to the top of the hour as possible.

That means when the NASCAR on Fox gang comes on the air at 12PM, they will be able to say hello and then the cars will hit the track. The full Fox crew returns led by Mike Joy in the announce booth with Darrell Waltrip and Larry McReynolds.

The Hollywood Hotel may or may not be back, but my guess is Chris Myers and Jeff Hammond should be on-board as usual. Myers dropped his comedy act on Sunday and led the TV team through some great discussions of NASCAR topics in the news. It was an eye-opener for those fans who argue that he is most effective in his assigned role as the class clown.

LMS has taken a lot of water and that normally means that the grassy area inside the frontstretch dogleg will be very damaging to the COT cars should they spin into it. We may well see careful racing because NASCAR is obligated to run the full 600 mile distance unless weather shortens the event after halfway.

No doubt there are some tired TV crew members on both the SPEED and Fox teams. Once the race is over, SPEED has some decisions to make. Originally scheduled for 8PM but taped in the early afternoon is This Week in NASCAR. Fox pit reporter Steve Byrnes is the host, with drivers Michael Waltrip and Marcos Ambrose as the panelists this week.

Also on tap is the Victory Lane show where host John Roberts interviews the winning driver and crew chief with Jimmy Spencer and Kenny Wallace. That program was scheduled for 11PM on Sunday and is not TBA in terms of air times. Perhaps, SPEED may be forced to put Victory Lane into the TWIN spot this week and just move on.

Fox is a broadcast TV network, not a cable outfit like SPEED. Most probably, the decision to show cartoons as standby programming during the rain delay and not NASCAR programming was driven by that issue. Some wonderful programs like Behind the Headsets and the SPEED broadcast of the All-Star race would have fit the bill, but the Fox local stations are used to cartoons in that timeslot. As previously mentioned, some West Cost viewers got to watch infomercials for two hours.

Monday is a new day and optimism is high that the race will be run. This post will serve to host your comments on the Fox broadcast of the rain-delayed Coca-Cola 600 and the RaceDay pre-race show. To add your TV-related opinion, just click on the comments button below.

TDP is a family-friendly website, please keep that in mind when posting. Thank you once again for taking the time to drop by.

Just to set things straight again, TV and radio do not play any role in when a race is delayed or ended.

Certainly, Fox has been involved in pushing the Sunday start times back and that has been an issue.

But, in terms of when a race like this is called, the TV and radio guys are not involved.

Jrs best years, pops was on the box, tony jr was doing sets.

Jr had someone he respected making the calls and dared not challenge it like he does with Tony Jr.

Honestly I loved when Steve Hmeil was calling the shots for Jr....

red said...

@karen: just to clarify: i'm not blaming it on the jrs. for me, it seems evident some kind of change is called for and it may be in the shop personnel or, as you note, engineers and/or car chief. but something's way off today and i haven't seen a car this bad under dale for a very long time.

@ken-michigan: understandable that folks want to have a mic in dale's face but i'd just as soon they treat it like any other 40th place team and focus on the teams which produced thru this endless "race."

Don't knock the southern people, if not for us, there would be no NASCAR. Addington is from South Carolina,so am I.

Some old posts as I was getting caught up--

@red--LOL! That's hilarious that someone had the nerve to steal change out of the fountain and then get mad that you wouldn't take it. If you're going to do that, at least dry them off. But of course you can still "feel" the wet for a bit.

@dot--you wouldn't want me to be your roomie, I love Digger too

5 pm might be the threshold to bump to SPEED but I feel they will give it up to an 8 pm resume time so maybe 5, 5:30 if it is still raining or looks like it will keep coming before its dried. They've been able to get the track dried very fast today fortunately.

Agreed. Any idea what ESPN2 is planning to do if the race is not called by the time Bestwick's roundtable starts at 5 p.m.?

Anonymous said...

It always scares me during situations like this when the hotel takes over, because it always seems like chris is the bearer of bad news (as in the one who FOX lets make the annoucment)

Mike, yes, Berggren gave Krista the hat yesterday. Kinda cool.

How about TWiN? The entire show is still at the track.

I give the fans that came back to the track today a lot of credit. To be rained on at least 5 times, find a place to camp out overnight, and the constant stop and go feel of this race. I would sure be cranky if I was there.

Jack from PA said...

I wish some of the drivers would venture over to the grandstand and sign a few autographs for the diehards that still remain through all of this. I feel like I've been through a lot on the couch today, I can't imagine how these fans must feel!

Daly Planet Editor said...

Isn't it weird how Fox puts a wall between reality and TV viewers?

SPEED just tells it straight and so does Bestwick. You just get the feeling Myers and Hammond are not really being upfront with us.

Especially after yesterday.

Just got home, so if I repeat anything, please forgive.

Jr is in a world of trouble. They said they were still using set ups that worked for them early in '08, but for some reason, it's not working now. They were supposedly told to use set ups from the 24 and 48, but it looks to me that IF they are using new set ups, those aren't working either. So it begs the question, is Jr just a mediocre driver?

Anonymous said...

I would think if they waited this long it's game on. reports are about 20-30mins more of rain, then clear skies till close to midnight

can't wait for friday: am spending all day at the track and will get to see cars from cup and n'wide on the track and close it off with the trucks. can not wait!

darbar said...

Sophia, I can't agree with you more about points racing. Seems the only driver out there who wants to win is Shrubbie. All the rest are just points racing, going hard enough not to screw up and drop out of the Chase. I hate the Chase, the Top 35 welfare system and the Lucky Dog.

Anon 4:58, Yes, Jr used to win, but in the past 3 or 4 seasons, he's really performed poorly. I just think his heart isn't in it anymore. Or else, too many distractions. You don't see guys like Jimmie, Jeff or other contenders off playing around like Jr does, with all his commercials, appearances and to be honest, hard drinking and partying. True champions focus on nothing but winning, but Jr's focus is everywhere else but racing.

Nascar can probably have more patience with this race at Charlotte rather than say, Las Vegas or Fontana, and with Dover next week since the tractor trailer trucks don't have too far to go.

The Loose Wheel said...

Bill H.

This doesnt affect the big teams at all. They have totally separate groups, and cars for Dover. That stuff should be either finished up or just about and all it needs is to be put on the truck and sent to Dover. This may affect a PRISM, TBR or TRG quite a bit but with all those teams located in the area, and PRISM running a car out of MWR today, shouldnt affect those teams that bad either.

Guys at the shop were probably off like you said.

red said...

@darbar with all due respect:
the appearance and commercials have scaled way back for dale since he left dei. you'll notice there's only been new go-daddy and nationwide insurance commercials this year from him. in fact, jimmie's done more new commercials than dale (aside from the championship ones that are obligatory.) and dale's recent commercial shoots generally occur on his own property and don't require long hours and travel, as was the case with dei.

as for hard partying and drinking: again, that may be an outdated version of the man. like all of us: he's grown out of his 20's and into his 30's and has scaled it back. even he says as much.

he is taking his position in the sport seriously, using it to leverage his popularity to earn him money for the rest of his life after racing. hence the whisky river project in charlotte, the real estate company and, of course jrm: all intended to give him income when he climbs out for the last time. he has learned the lesson of some of his heroes and what happened to them when they stopped racing.

short version: he's not the stupid kid he was years ago. that started to change with his dad's death and was, i believe, cemented with the sonoma wreck that drove home the point of his personal vulnerability as a racer.

whatever it is that's slapped the team down is not the responsibility of one person or one team relationship. and the team and organization needs to keep working on it.

Brian said...

I hope we get this underway again. The fans at the track have spent way to much time and probably money to call it this early. The "hollywood hotel" wants to go home so they want to call the race. This race reminds me of the other 600 mile race NASCAR attempted. Back in '69 they tried to run the Yankee 600 at Michigan. Anyone remember that one? I was there, rain delayed the start several hours. Twice the race was red flagged for rain it ended being called for darkness after 330 miles. During one of the delays they had a helicopter hovering up and down the backstretch to help dry the track. On one of his trips as he turned around. He hit a wrecker with the tail rotor and crash landed right in front of where I was parked. They didn't try for 600 miles after that at MIS.

Red, good points, but something is very, very wrong with that team. How long will this go on before Rick steps in? I think the combo of Jr and his cousin isn't working. Jr needs someone on the pit box to kick his butt---someone who commands Jr's respect.

And I do agree, Jr needs to kick the buddies/hangers on and all the ones living on his property for free, and grow up a little more. He does a lot of his partying on is property. And, he is now involved building the Earnhardt Jr mansion, on the spot of his old house. Saw a video on how he ran the bulldozer when wrecking the original house.

Next decade when Sean McManus buys back in he can work the booth for Nascar on CBS

@alex - NHIS is now NHMS, since Bruton bought it from the Bahres.

Isn't that the way most couples operate?

No, and who are you to suggest Junior change his standards anyway?

Unknown said...

I always suggest this and people think I work for NASCAR when I do, but they just Showed the underfunded Gillilands's CompUSA.com car on TV.

If you want small teams to be able to get sponsors, it helps to at least visit a new sponsor's site when you see it on a car....

If NASCAR fans got together and started doing this perhaps we could show the power of funding a small team.

Karen said...

bozo, I can't do that any more with this super duper DVR. Only thing I don't like about it.

Been tried.

Fans cannot afford the kind of money it takes to run even a small team for a season. Just doesn't work.

anon@5:34: i did not know that! astounding.

darbar: something is wrong with this team, to be certain. but the folks who are actually in the shop with the 88 team are confounded as well. if there were an easy (if somewhat psychological) answer, it would have been found and enacted. he's not my brother or friend: he's my driver. i only know of him what he's chosen to put out there. but i don't think he's lost focus or passion. i think he's frustrated and anxious and pressing too hard right now -- as is everyone associated with this team. a change may be needed but mr h needs to make that decision or take it off the table unequivocally.

that being said, as i stated earlier, i believe today may be the tipping point. the car is/was a piece of junk and that needs to be addressed.

chad looks as if he's been borrowing jimmie's rogaine recently. and the names on the car is cool -- altho' done for fans before. nice touch to have it be military personnel. and i didn't even mind that it was actually a commercial!

Newracefan said...

Reut looks even more stressed then when he had to qualify on time, and that's saying something

Glenn said...

oops, Chad spilled the beans.

bozo said...

with reruns on..do they switch it over to speed? Maybe 6:00 will be the switch time

Anonymous said...

@Alex--ah...yes I saw that one here on the feed I'm getting from CO. My favorite is the Bristol divorce commercial they had back in 2K1/2K2 somewhere around there. I wish they'd bring it back, it never gets old.

Chad's piece has caused the Lowes Racing website to crash!

So, it looks like Victory Lane will be in the TWIN timeslot. That is a total guess on my part, but probably makes sense.

So Chad was told that they could restart the race up to 9:00 pm.

I'm nobody. Just making an observation. It calmed his father down when he met a strong woman in Teresa.

It's good they showed the compusa.com markings on the 71. They also did a good job showing extended views of TBR's sponsors as well. That's exactly what they need to do. Show everyone's sponsors so there is a perceived value. Not overboard like tilted kilt and the onion but at least just some good photos.

And the booth has jumped the shark and seems to be pushing hard to call the race even though trucks and jetdryers are deployed. You signed up for the race so get over the delays.

wonder if any of the safety vehichles have crashed drying out the track

bevo said...

Know what Fox needs right about now? Buddy Baker telling old war stories. Be the best programming ever for a rain delay.

Anonymous said...

Did Fox not know about this 9 p.m. target that Chad just brought up with Dr. Bergren?

Seems like someone in the Hollywood Hotel should have reported that hours ago.

Newracefan said...

I really think Chad was talking about last night that they said that they had til 9pm to start the race, I'm hoping it doesn't take till then. Hearing there is more rain coming that may be the straw

Hotaru1787 said...

I hear thunder where I'm at... might have to get off here.

Wow first race I've ever been able to have a holiday picnic, 3 hour road trip, and gone shopping during the course of a race.

I must say this (ouch that shot looks ugly), kudos to nascar, for everything the fans have been through to try to give them a show under the lights, but it looks like it's not in the cards :(

The J said...

with that rain coming, theyll call the race most likely

Mike said...

We're coming upon another top of the hour....might be a chance for them to call it then.

bozo said...

looks like the vehicles are coming off the track

Mike said...

They've asked to bring the jet driers off the track so they can re-fuel them.

Anonymous said...

Did they pack up the hotel, feel like we've not seen Jeff and Chris in a while . . .

Sophia said...

call it already.

it's done!

fans gotta be exhausted!!

Mike Joy really does love his classic cars

if i'm jr. i'tm telling them to find a sub driver..i'm going home

Anonymous said...

CALL THE RACE.
PLEASE.

bozo said...

i think jd went to supper or to sleep

Anonymous said...

if i'm jr. i'tm telling them to find a sub driver..i'm going home

If I'm Rick Hendrick, I'm telling you that for what you're paid, you can sit your butt down and wait.

Anonymous said...

Why do I get the feeling the reluctance to call the race has to do with who's leading? I can't help but think if a more high-profile driver (granted Reutimann drives for Waltrip) was in the lead, that this would've been called by now.

Unknown said...

They prolly are giving meyers and hammond red bull to get them back up to speed

Mike said...

I'm trying to see if I can still see the Hollywood Hotel when they show pit road....it is interesting we're not hearing from them.

Richard in N.C. said...

Kyle P said on PRN that Mikey could have been the inspiration for the Ricky Bobby character.

JD, do you have any idea whether NASCAR keeps an eye on how many fans are leaving the track in deciding whether to call a race?

The Loose Wheel said...

Chad said they would go to 9 pm. That means they are serious about trying to get this entire distance in.

I dont think it matters at all who is leading

The radar is getting worse. The storm is getting more unpredictable by the hour. Started blowing east to west, then west to east, now from south to north.

It started looking like the this would be a quick storm, but its just hung around..now lots of storm cells are popping up from the south.

I'm hopeful they can get it going again, but I don't know. I'm glad they are giving it a good go and not falling into FOX's pressure to end this (which is so unprofessional).

I have to give NASCAR credit for really trying. The FOX crew has to be exhausted. There is nothing new to cover, and they are still on the air. They deserve their time off after Dover (Larry Mac has a few more weeks on TNT).
