Race On Hold Due To Rain: Live Blogging The Sprint Cup Series From LMS On Fox

7PM - The race is on hold due to rain and Fox has returned to regular programming. TDP will update you on the progress of drying the track.

This is a huge telecast for the NASCAR on Fox gang. There is only one more race for this TV team after today. It has been a very long season for Fox filled with all kinds of issues both on and off the track.

At 5PM it will be Chris Myers leading Fox onto the air from the Hollywood Hotel. He will be joined by Darrell Waltrip and Jeff Hammond. These two will have an hour to fill before the green flag comes at 6:05PM. That may be delayed even further if the pesky rain showers that have been falling on LMS all day continue.

Mike Joy is the leader of the Fox team and he should be in all his glory at LMS. Larry McReynolds and Waltrip will join him in the booth for the call of this very long race. Down on pit road will be Steve Byrnes, Dick Berggren, Matt Yocum and Krista Voda.

This race has a ton of great story lines and there will be plenty to talk about even if the rain delays the start. From Mark Martin and his resurgence to the success of Tony Stewart the on-track stories are good. Away from the track, Jeremy Mayfield's drug suspension and the Tuesday driver meeting called by NASCAR are certainly interesting.

Look for Digger to make his presence known as Fox only has two more race days to sell merchandise. How much of the animation and graphics will be used should be interesting to watch. No word on whether another cartoon will be inserted in the pre-race show.

Fox continues to struggle in the pits and has used all different kinds of triple and quad splits. LMS pit road is straight, so we may see the old quad box back again. At least the graphics for the race off have been good recently.

One new wrinkle in the Fox coverage has been side-by-side video boxes at the finish. One shows the winner slowing down while the other shows a wideshot of the rest of the field finishing. It was an improvement over not showing any car but the winner finishing the race, but does not work very well. Both ESPN and SPEED simply use a wideshot and let the lead lap cars or trucks race to the stripe.

No doubt Kyle Busch will be on Waltrip's mind at this track. It should be fun to listen to the commentary as things sort-out on the track. Busch is often spectacular at this track, but this race is the longest on the circuit.

This post will serve to host your comments on the Sprint Cup Series race from LMS on Fox. To add your TV-related comments, just click on the comments button below. This is a family-friendly website, please keep that in mind when posting.

Thanks for taking the time to stop by on this holiday weekend.

Why was the start moved back to 6 p.m.?

SonicAD said...

Weather radar looks horrible. I don't see them racing tonight. And with a 60% chance of rain all day on Monday and Tuesday as well, I wouldn't be surprised if they end up running this on the next off-weekend.

Daly Planet Editor said...

It was originally listed as 5:45PM. Now it is posted as 6PM. No clue.

I'm guessing the 6pm start is for track-drying?? considering I gather it's been drizzling/showering throughout the day

Daly Planet Editor said...

No clue on the wetness yet. Anyone have an update from the track?

Anonymous said...

hmm based on raceday track looked wet, but they have people/stages on front straight instead of jet dryers?!?

Haus14 said...

from a purely selfish perspective, i am hoping for a delayed start tonight. i have to travel to the in-laws this evening which is about two hrs away. if the delay continues, i will get to seen the end of the race.

Dot said...

According to CNN weather, mostly cloudy as of 1:30ish (4:30ish) to you on the right.

Anonymous said...

Right now they are doing the military demonstration so there are people on the frontstretch. But I would have the dryers on the backstretch so that all we hae to dry is the frontstretch.

Haus14 said...

too bad they can't just fly the helicopters around the track a few times to dry it.

On again off again showers all day at LMS. Per Carl Edwards' facebook page which was given to me by a friend lol.

Its been raining though all day which is what I heard from folks that live out there

Thunderstorms training through here (about 25 miles sw of the track), heading Northeast. Exect a lot of delays. I suspect they held the Shawn Johnson feature to use as rain filler tonight. They'll need it. Weather radar: http://www.weather.com/outlook/events/sports/map/interactive/USNC0299?from=36hr_topnav_sports

NRF,
I caught that too even saw JR look at kenny with a puzzled look as if to say "where the heck are you going with this?"

stricklinfan82 said...

One can only wonder how many of the curious casual sports fans that switched over to Fox after watching the end of the Indy 500 just rolled their eyes at the cartoon, said something like 'Are You Serious?', and went channel surfing elsewhere, never come to back to Fox the rest of the night.

Not exactly the best way to build interest in the upcoming event and keep the casual fans tuned in, in my personal opinion anyway.

Green/yellow #2 of the weekend

Daly Planet Editor said...

Nrf, I really think Jimmy wants to speak his mind on the meeting. Just don't know where he will have a chance to do that.

I was hoping he might be the special guest on TWIN. Instead, it will be Marcos Ambrose.

NASCAR has this whole going green thing in progress.

Tough to find one of those rear wheel drive Camrys at the dealership.

Just watched the Indy 500 and was impressed all the way through by the professionalism till the end and then I put on FOX and saw the Digger cartoon, DW, Meyers, and HEY Hammond, the worst broadcaster in any sport on TV. This clown act FOX gives us needs to be changed and very soon.Hopefully they will see this approach is turning off way too many viewers and retool for next year. I do not look forward to writing this type of comment but my enjoyment is determined by the race coverage and this is brutal.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Anon 5:24PM,

Waltrip and Hammond have been on SPEED this week covering practice and qualifying.

Watching them on SPEED is totally different. It's like night and day.

That is the only thing that bugs me about all this, it's an act.

Jack from PA said...

Anon, 5:24,

I agree 100%. ABC/ESPN's coverage was darn good I thought, with very professional individuals calling a great race that at times came hard to announce since the whole field was single file. The only thing I didn't like was the overload of the GoDaddy.com commercials and the camera work at the checkered flag. Those are SMALL, minute problems compared to FOX's coverage of the races this year. For a sport that has more fans and viewers, you'd think it would be the other way around. If they want to improve their broadcasts for next year, just compare tonight's Digger-filled comedy fest with ABC/ESPN's professional coverage of the Indy 500.

I see green all over the southeast on weather.com. Rain doesn't even seem like a factor on Fox. What is going on?

Daly Planet Editor said...

Remember when Humpy re-inacted the invasion of Grenada and when they blew up a fake building it broke windows in the hospitality suites?

I sure do miss that guy.

Vicky D said...

JD - yeah, my 10 year old Camry is front wheel drive. Hubby drives a camaro because he wanted a rear-wheel drive car but that thing is so uncomfortable to sit in for more than 2 minutes. I'm not too high on these hybrids here in Houston especially.

Anonymous said...

They just interviewed JR, and man is that guy completely sapped of confidence or what?

The Loose Wheel said...

LOL. Humpy. Always a character.

I'd love to see him on tv maybe with his own show or something. ISC would be wise to use his services at places that need draws like Fontana, Michigan, and some others

The Loose Wheel said...

"We discuss the state of the sport every week" Yet no discussion of Mayfield or Long. Go figure.

At Indy they had a pre-recorded track for Taps -- the bugler didnt even move his fingers. Maybe they should have done that for the 600, as the horn player just botched the notes on the tribute.

Mike said...

Right now I'm wondering how much of this is "hold the audience" taking place.

i know you may not believe this, but the high humidity very well may have been the problem for the bugler

anon - the bugler was playing a trumpet. when you play taps on a trumpet instead of a bugle you don't move your fingers

bugles don't have valves like a trumpet, hence you don't move your fingers to play taps because you can't on an actual bugle

TexasRaceLady said...

haus, I was thinking the same thing about the humidity and the bugle.

Having tootled a bugle in the drill team eons ago, I well remember the difficulty on the hot, humid September nights at the football games.

Jo from SC said...

Rain is less than 2 mi south of the speedway right now. Just talked to a friend on Mallard Creek Church rd and she says it's raining there now.

Sophia said...

Ok I guess it's a BUGLE you don't move your fingers? I missed that.

I saw a cornet, move your fingers.. and sliding trumpet and trombone (Folks think sliding trumpet is a baby trombone) The latter two you slide the distance for the sound of course.

Last night's cajun/dixieland had an original member from Louisiana with his cajun push button accordion and fiddle. so we heard 3 fiddles at times and fabulous 'cordion, but I digress. :)

I forgive bugle for the humidity issue...if indeed that was it

WOW clouds look low and dark behind Mikey just now!!

I thought they were suppose to fire engines??

What's the deal?

Richard in N.C. said...

PRN booth says they can see rain about 1/4 mile from Speedway, and that a full wet would require about 1.5 to 1 3/4 hours to dry track.

Dot said...

Great.

The Loose Wheel said...

If it downpours we'll be in a 2 plus hour delay. Took over 2 after ESPN took the air yesterday and that was after some half hour of drying efforts already in progress.

Gonna race to halfway I think. Front stretch looks soaked. Here we go! Forget Meyers we got our update!

Anonymous said...

Chris Myers says it is raining "a little" there...as the umbrellas and car covers come out.

We can see the people running all over the place and literally hear the rain. Who is Chris trying to lie to?

The Loose Wheel said...

2.5 hours before engines are even fired if it stops now is my best guess.

Martin Vincent said...

Well, Fox can't ignore it now, it's pouring hard now... But Chris Myers says it's dry where he is. Maybe that's the problem, he can't see outside and if it's not raining on his head, it's not raining period. :)

Speaking of weather & racing...the other morning Jim Cantore said it looked like rain for Charlotte and something about 'we hope it holds out for you Humpy...' I guess Jim doesn't know Humpy's gone. Made me sad to think of it.

You gotta give big credit to Chris Myers. For all the knocking of his jokey demeanor, he is really showing why he is one of the top pros in the business tonight. It is really hard to vamp and direct the show from his chair in a rain situation like this, and he is doing a masterful job in a very difficult position for any broadcaster. He's kept the show moving and it never felt like it was flying by the seat of its pants, as it surely was back in the booth. All credit to Myers.

Why are they lying to us on Fox?? CM just talked about an "hour" delay!! Claire B. Lang is saying on Sirius that she's hearing we won't start before 9pm. From what I can see from the weather map, about the time they get the track dryed, they are gonna get dumped on again.

They are lying on FOX because if everyone turns off their TV now it will be a disaster for them. Even with the rain delay, they still are logging the ratings, and it is their job to keep people tuned in as long as possible, even if they end up calling the race off in 2 hours.
