Live Blogging The Sprint Cup Series Race From Pocono On TNT

There were over five hours of pre-race programming on ESPN2, SPEED and TNT. Now, it is time to race at Pocono. Bill Weber, Kyle Petty and Wally Dallenbach take center stage for the next six races.

TNT is throwing a ton or resources at these broadcasts. In addition to Larry McReynolds holding court in the infield with his trendy stage and cutway car, TNT is once again offering RaceBuddy.

This season, the Internet application will have new features. They include PRN's Jim Noble as a designated online reporter, embedded messaging from sources like Twitter and text messages directly to RaceBuddy users from pit road about the teams.

On the TV side, ESPN's original NASCAR Director Mike Wells returns this season for all six races. His directing style is evident right from the start of the first race. Wells uses wideshots and follows the best racing on the track regardless of where it is happening.

Petty has changed the tone of these telecasts with his good sense of humor and his ability to poke fun at himself. Down on pit road, local TV station sports reporter Lindsay Czarniak surfaces for these six races with her enthusiasm and nose for news. Veterans Ralph Sheheen, Marty Snider and Matt Yocum round-out the pit reporter corps.

Weber has come a very long way since his NBC days and seemed to gel with Petty right from the start. He hosts a thirty minute pre-race show and then calls the race in his new role. Since fans have not seen him on NASCAR TV since last season, Weber is the wild card in this mix.

This post will serve to host your comments about the TNT coverage of the Sprint Cup Series race from Pocono. To add your TV-related opinion, just click on the comments button below. This is a family-friendly website, please keep that in mind when posting.

Thanks for taking some time out of your weekend to stop by The Daly Planet.

The thru the field is cool -- if you have info about the teams, beyond their brand.

bevo said...

It's real simple. This from earlier-

Robin Pemberton -

“When the caution comes out, the field will be frozen as it is today. The free-pass car will be identified as it is today and it will be the same format. As the cars are gathered behind the pace car, the pit road is opened for leaders, the second time by it will be open for the lap-down cars, and that is how it is today. And when we come to the one [lap]-to-go [until the green drops], the cars that have elected not to pit that are lap-down cars that will be in front of the lead-lap cars that have pitted, will be waved around to join the field at the tail end. The lineup will be on the double-file restart, lead-lap cars to the front, lap-down cars, … then it will be the free-pass car, then it will be the cars that have been waved around and then it will be the penalty cars."

my battery has an X! Nice to watch the race with you all as usual! Go Tony!!

Martin Vincent said...

@Dot - The waved-around cars rejoin the lead lap if they were only 1 lap down. All others gain one lap and can eventually rejoin the lead lap if there are enough cautions.

Just got home but watched the race at my sister's house. I think TNT has done a pretty good job and I've enjoyed the race. Double file restarts have really improved the racing. And, I'm wondering if TNT has read this blog all season because they've done a nice job with showing pit stops and running the field.

Hey FOX, take a hint for next year OK?

Dot said...

Thanks Martin V, someday I'll get it.

Martin Vincent said...

You guys think Jeff Gordon's gamble is going to work. He's 7th now.

darbar said...

I cannot believe how Jr messed up another pit stop. What's with that guy. Well, at least this last stop was ok and he didn't miss his pit stall. But, doesn't seem this new crew chief can make the car comfortable for Jr to drive either. So, maybe now everyone will know that Jr can't drive the COT.

The Loose Wheel said...

tony letting off WAYYY early, cutting the car off too

Dot said...

I'm a Nervous Nellie right now with Marcos in the top 10. I want Tony to win though.

The Loose Wheel said...

look...a graphic saying who the incar is and where they are running

Sophia said...

@Dot

I still don't get the simple explanation either if that was what you were referring to..the lap stuff with the restart.

swiss cheese brain.

or old dames! J/Kidding :)

Jack from PA said...

Now this is drama on TNT! Good stuff. I used to not care for fuel mileage racing but it's better than someone winning by 10 seconds.

The Loose Wheel said...

i love listening to tony cut that car off and save fuel

Jimbacca said...

Trying to catch up on the DVR of the race. For the first time this year I haven't caught up. No in race commercials or race breaks from commercials. Excellent coverage.

The coverage looks like they took all of the fox complaints and did something about it. Maybe the head of fox should take notes. Better yet... maybe someone should send him the notes.

And the shots at Race Buddy vs digger.... Digger serves zero purpose. Race buddy is a free highly useful item that shows you all different parts of the race, leaderboard, update panel and even a 'chat' area. Beyond cool even if it does lock up occasionally. But its free NO HUGE BANNER OR PROMOS OF BUY RACE BUDDY STUFF on ..store.com.

Just awesome so far. No overcomplicated infield studio to go with your booth. Petty is great. Dallenbach is an excellent analyst.

Dot said...

@ dear Sophia, old dames it is. lol

Martin Vincent said...

Fuel mileage could give the win to 00, 39, 24 or (Dot, get ready) 47!

Sophia said...

ok enough tony!! I love TOny but other cars!!

Dot said...

@ Martin V, from your keyboard....XOXO

Lou said...

Also enjoying more of the radio chatter. gives us more information as to what the teams are thinking.

The Loose Wheel said...

48 will make it, 14 and 99 idk about.

tony clutching it, not killing it like i thought. he did speed up tho

Newracefan said...

Oh Lord I think my heart rate is higher than Tony's this is the longest 10 laps ever

Sophia said...

Newracefan said...

Sophia said...

omg!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

he did it!!!!!!!!!!!!!

sad they went to the crew...sheesh..just like Fox

Dot said...

Tony wins & Marcos gets 6th. I'm a happy girl/old hag.

Tracy D said...

Wow, what an ending. Sam Hornish with a top 10, too!

Andrew said...

Fantastic job by Smoke! And TNT!

Sophia said...

I hope they show the OTHER CARS crossing on replay please

Anonymous said...

YEAH BAY BEE! Congratulations Team Smoke

Anonymous said...

Smooth Mr. Director dude.... top 10 car spinning out of 4 on the last lap... and we get to see the pit crew1

Anonymous said...

Not that was the icing on the TNT cake. Don't show the cars and a lead lap car trying to crash on the final lap to show a victory celebration.

PROFESSIONAL.

Anonymous said...

What exactly just happened there. Did Kahne spin?

Lou said...

yea Tony

TexasRaceLady said...

I thought we were watching FOX just then.

A great race all day and TNT ruins the finish.

Anonymous said...

We apparently missed a lot of action watching Tony drive around and wave.

Jack from PA said...

I don't know about you guys but that was great incorporation between the guys in the booth with the pit reporters and Larry Mac. Great job by Tony to go 41 laps on a full tank, that was some good stuff. Another lap and he would have gotten passed.

Anonymous said...

TNT director, you are the weakest link.

Goodbye.

diane said...

Yeah Ambrose!!!

The Loose Wheel said...

Tony has a ton of extra fuel lol

Anonymous said...

When Wally yells "Trouble," I don't want to see the pit crew celebrating.

Sophia said...

Well all that GREAT CAMERA WORK

WTH happened at the end.

FOX ALL OVER AGAIN or ABC. NO other cars finished????????????????????

Anonymous said...

Congrats Dot and Marcos on 6th!

YAY Sammy!

Jack from PA said...

Not too happy about the lack of showing Kahne, but man one hiccup beats the entire NASCAR on FOX hiccup of a season any day.

Sophia said...

RB tony was in VL a few seconds ago

Anonymous said...

Stewart wins, and good race coverage !!!

Now I can watch VL happy!

Burnouts from inside car were cool

Thanks TNT & RaceBuddy

Anonymous said...

Do I need to watch SPEED to see what happened at the end of the race?

Daly Planet Editor said...

Bummed we did not see the lead lap cars finish. Missed JJ running out of gas and Kasey's spin.

Other than that, what a show!

Dot said...

Thank you Gymmie.

Martin Vincent said...

@Sophia - Click on my name and bookmark, the results will be up in about 10 minutes.

If you thought I was helpful earlier, this'll complement any information you're getting elsewhere.

Good night everybody, gotta get to work!

Newracefan said...

Reut 3rd and back in the top 12

Anonymous said...

What a dumb question. What were you doing inside the racecar to save fuel?

I'm not telling.

Sorry but we know. Bizarre question.

Dot said...

A little karma for SDDD?

Anonymous said...

What happened to the other 42 cars? There were 42 other races occuring simultaneously. What channel were they on? This is exactly why television ratings have taken a nosedive here lately.
What did TNT do, hire a soap opera crew to broadcast this race. I know these races aren't boring, I have been to a lifetime's worth of Cup racing over the last 23 years.
But this broadcast of a race certainly was. TNT, you guys must be proud of your efforts but I see a lot to be desired and I'll wager I'm not the only viewer to believe so. I am disappointed with especially the last lap coverage. I should have mowed the yard. I wouldn't have been nearly as disappointed at the finish of the broadcast-because I wouldn't have seen it! Oh, well. I saw good racing at the local 3/8 last night. I can't say that today.

Dot said...

Bye Martin V. Thanks for reporting. Good site BTW.

Jack from PA said...

@ dot,

I think karma would be a guitar coming out and smashing his car once he got out of it.... all this while he runs to the golf kart :)

Sophia said...

JoJaye

I am such a dunce! I never thought to watch RB at the end. Wonder if we watched all 4 if we would've seen other cars finish?? hmmm.

Just thrilled tony won.

I have on a black T shirt of his a friend bought for me from Cintas! :)

Daly Planet Editor said...

Thanks to everyone who took the time to stop by today. There will be a new column up for your comments minutes after TNT goes off the air.

Thanks again for all your support.

Good race, well-covered...until the last lap, when we missed critical action.

Please, TNT, show us what's actually happening, not what the rundown says.

Anonymous said...

@Sophia - you should see the looks I get in Tampa wearing a Eldora hoodie! LOL

Dot said...

@ Jack, funny.

@ dear Sophia, I tuned to RB when the commls started at the CF. Remember that next Sunday.

bevo said...

Why is it so hard to show cars crossing the finish line? Or cars running out of fuel on the last two laps? Or top 10 cars spinning out?

Sophia said...

Jack

I like your thinking on shrub!!! :)

Jack from PA said...

Guys, just stating facts on him. He seems to be having a series of temper tantrums lately so I'm figuring he had one today. He must hate Pocono and he had a top 10 early in the race, but he slipped at the end. Didn't realize how bad he finished until I saw the rundown, though.

darbar said...

What a race !! My guy wins, my other favorites like Marcos do real well also.

Other than the end, pretty darn good job by TNT.

Sophia said...

going off the air 15 minutes EARLY??

Why?

who is that dreadful band> ugh

Daly Planet Editor said...

There is a new post up for your comments on the first TNT race of 2009.

Thanks!
