Live Blogging NASCAR's Saturday Night Doubleheader

First up on Saturday are the Camping World Trucks from Kentucky Speedway. As usual, it will be Krista Voda and The Set-Up that begins the coverage. This week, the pre-race show is at 6:30PM and the race begins shortly after 7PM ET.

Play by play veteran Rick Allen will be joined by analysts Phil Parsons and Michael Waltrip. On pit road will be Adam Alexander and Ray Dunlap. This is SPEED's experienced truck series team and the race should be exciting.

The Nationwide Series is the nightcap of the doubleheader and is racing this week at Gateway near St. Louis, MO. The announcing switch has happened and Marty Reid will be calling the remaining Nationwide Series races on ESPN for the rest of the season.

This may be exactly what the series needs to get some momentum going down the stretch. Rusty Wallace and Andy Petree are working with Reid this week and they should be fired-up for this stand-alone Nationwide Series race.

On pit road are Jamie Little, Dave Burns and Mike Massaro. Most of the heavy hitters are on vacation for this last weekend before the big grind to the finish begins for the NASCAR on ESPN team.

Once again, it will be fun to watch two networks take a very different approach to the same sport. The informality and good humor of SPEED will be an interesting contrast to the suits and ties of the ESPN gang.

This post will serve to host your comments on the two races tonight. To add your TV-related opinion, just click on the comments button below. This is a family-friendly website, please keep that in mind when posting.

Thanks for stopping by to watch these two races with us on the weekend.

Wow, Marty really sets the tone. You can feel it here at home.

Already mentioned the S&Ps. Not keeping it a secret.

kbaskins said...

So JD, do you think these races are an audition?

I find the Extenze ads...disturbing..

JD- I was just thinking the same thing. Marty's gonna be his own man. So far, so good.

The Loose Wheel said...

that kid in the 77 impresses the heck out of me. I really hope they get a sponsor.

Parker still leading the points?

red said...

and another mention of S&P's by reid.

bevo said...

@red- Thanks, hadn't heard about the surgery.

Marty has had more enthusiasm in the first 10 laps than JP has in two seasons.

kbaskins said...

Marty is my new hero, if for nothing else than mentioning S&Pers. How refreshing! Not only that, he knows the driver names that match the car numbers.

Sweeeeeeeet.

--KarenB

Marty says "two more start and parks". I love it.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Anon 9:53PM,

It might be time to get some classic great videos of folks singing the anthem and just play them back on the Sprint Vision screens and TV.

This has been a brutal year for live anthem performances.

Karen said...

David, unlike my Benson comment being wrong (think I read it at Jayski), I definitely heard a pit reporter (Dave Burns, I think) say no Q'ing at ORP.

red said...

noooo! race = big screen; anything else = smaller screen. exactly how tough is this?

kbaskins said...

Brad really needs to lose that rodent that's made a home on his chin.

--KarenB

red said...

that is one very big opening in the outside wall at gateway. makes me nervous . . .

The Loose Wheel said...

Karen I think they may let the GOGH cars qualify, something was said about the top 30 not being able to do something, i thought it was that they wouldnt have time to get them all together to select pit stalls but perhaps qualify may be the case. Hopefully at the very least the GOGH cars will get to qualify. Thats bogus in my eyes though. Totally inexcusible.

I echo the Marty Reid comments. Maybe he stops by here and sees our love for him and gives us the extra effort lol. Least we can hope thats the case.

Dave in OKC said...

Watching NW race but have ARCA timing and scoring in another window. 24 laps into the ARCA race and only 17 cars on lead lap. Is that correct?

Dot said...

I would rather forego the pole and have my car run well during the race.

Speaking of Kez. I know siblings don't always look alike but, are he and Brian 1/2 brothers?

red said...

after having just watched the trucks and flipping between arca and n'wide, i have realized that one of the things that espn does that i dislike intensely is too much junk on the screen. i don't need to see the in-car camera when the booth is talking about the car; i don't need the crew chief on the pit box -- i just want to see the racing.
lose the bells and reduce the whistles, please.

Sophia said...

did Marty just say 12th S&P???????????????

red said...

and marty says: another S&P behind the wall, that brings the total to 12. thanks for the honesty, marty!

Sophia said...

everytime I turn on NW race bumper cam or in car cam...or tight shot

sigh...

The Loose Wheel said...

I think he meant that was the total number of laps Blunt had run

The Loose Wheel said...

8 S&P's so far, Marty's remark was on the number of laps Blunt had turned.

IPingUPing said...

Why does every driver say, "I think this backup car is better." If it's better, why didn't you start it to begin with?

TexasRaceLady said...

I'm really liking Marty in the booth. If nothing else, he acknowledges the S&Ps.

Sorry I'm late, the anthem had me in shock.

Sophia said...

but they are more than 12 laps into the race..I guess the latest S&P missed part of the beginning of the race?

I am getting dizzy watching two races & readin..need break...need two tvs..but my room mate is in LR

Dot said...

@ IPing, I know, huh?

@ TRL, funny. I would suggest that you make friends with your mute button in the future.

The Loose Wheel said...

Most drivers are product of confidence. Thus drivers you see when they have 2 or 3 bad weeks like KB did to start the Chase last year, carry the negative momentum onto several weeks.

OR when a driver goes to a RC saying "I hate this place" then goes out and runs poorly as a result. Where drivers like Sorenson come to Gateway saying "I love this place" and always run well.

Gotta feel like the backup is better otherwise you doom yourself.

Mike Wallace said as much during his qualifying interview when asked if he felt good about making the race. "I don't have a choice, I have to" was pretty much what he said.

With Keller I think they said they ran an older body style because they felt there was a better chance of getting damage on the car and rathered have run the older car instead of their newer body.

TexasRaceLady said...

@Dot

I was on the other side of the room at the computer --- heard the first 4 notes and everything went black.

Dot said...

Thank you Marty for naming names. So tired of numbers only.

The Loose Wheel said...

Sophia, pull in early, come back out after 3 or 4 more fall out to pick up the spots.

Like what we saw in the Cup race several weeks back with the #66 and #87 before NASCAR said enough.

bevo said...

Dave- 26 on lead lap

kbaskins said...

Well, even Marty Reid can't hide that fact that this is another poopy race. Only the top four are within four seconds of the leader.

Time for NASCAR to throw a fake caution to tighten up the cars. Please. I'm begging.

--KarenB

Dot said...

@ David 10:14, you are wise beyond your years. Good post.

IPingUPing said...

My wife says it's a conflict of interest to have a car owner call a race. (Rusty & 62/66). After watching the recent discussion and how it shifted from Kenny to Brendan, seems like she might have a point.

Dave in OKC said...

@kbaskins -

We're almost to the green flag stop window. It's now or never.

Anonymous said...

My wife says it's a conflict of interest to have a car owner call a race. (Rusty & 62/66). After watching the recent discussion and how it shifted from Kenny to Brendan, seems like she might have a point.

Fans have been complaining about this since ESPN put him nit he booth.

ESPN clearly doesn't care.

Sophia said...

ok..now I have LR and TWO TV's on..only half interested..am tired already.

The Loose Wheel said...

Thanks Dot. I learned in my online race Thursday that I love Kentucky...Got my first win on fuel strategy there 2 years ago. Came into the race happy, ran well all race...overcame problems and got a top 5 on a late restart.

Many other tracks I go to such as Milwaukee, I do not like as much and do not run well as a result. Lol. I've actually tested that theory.

If Lagasse could get some breaks, he really could break through and win one this year

The Loose Wheel said...

Annon, many have debated that and originally ESPN was in a bind as a result but since DW and Hammond had owned teams in Trucks and called those races they eased on the rules. It was supposed to be if you owned a Cup team however, you would have to make a choice between the booth and being an owner, but Brad D. has shown that rule got broken too.

The Loose Wheel said...

I love green flag runs. Kyle has a great stop, Harvick and Edwards do not. Now we got ourselves a race!

Sophia said...

@Texas Race Lady

LOL at your 'everything went black' after 4 notes. I am REALLY sorry I missed the anthem for the NW race. :)

wish that was on youtube

The Loose Wheel said...

Guess the 87 is gonna need an ExtenZe after that...

kbaskins said...

Dang! The front of Conway's car needs some Extenz.

--KarenB

Dot said...

Now Rusty is Crew Chiefing from the booth.

The Loose Wheel said...

Who needs a debris caution when you have guys like Conway on the track!

red said...

there is some joke waiting to be said about how the extenze car shrunk after that wreck . . .
back to arca during commercial break.

TexasRaceLady said...

Well, at least we can see this debris on the track. LOL

Dot said...

@ KBaskins, maybe that was the problem. Time to see his doctor.

kbaskins said...

Drat! David beat me to the obvious pun.

I hope you're happy, Mr. Smart Guy.

:-)

--KarenB

Dave in OKC said...

Re the 87 sponsor - Does NASCAR have a template for that?

Sorry, couldn't resist.

The Loose Wheel said...

Red, i said it right after i saw the car sitting there. Guess that wont make the next commercial...got lucky his first 2 races...not so much tonight

bevo said...

I know one guy that's glad he didn't take any ExtenZe tonight - home plate umpire in the Rangers game has had three "incidents" with the baseball in the game :)

Dot said...

@ bevo, ouch. Funny though.

kbaskins said...

I'm tired of Rusty already. How long is he going to be in the booth?

--KarenB

TexasRaceLady said...

Boy, Jamie was just falling all over her words.

I'm not really sure what she was trying to say.

The Loose Wheel said...

LOL, did i mention I love Marty Reid?

Dave in OKC said...

I guess Marty didn't get the memo on "SS" either.

Attaboy!

The Loose Wheel said...

There goes John Wes....David Green where art thou?

Sophia said...

hard crash in ARCA! driver side against wall and other car mess in back

Dot said...

NASCAR on Twitter referring to start as....DFR SOS.

@ David, you're funny.

Sophia said...

ok..driver against wall leaped out and the other car net was down but rear end was torn up!!

Daly Planet Editor said...

Sorry, was off in Twitter land.

bevo said...

@TRL- Jamie has regressed. She was pretty good on IRL races but she just seems befuddled now.

Nice replays on the crash.

Anonymous said...

What would a NW race be without a JWT wreck?

red said...

ok, so marty reid is making a ton of difference, petree continues to offer solid info but i could live without rusty in the booth.

Dot said...

Is DJ done on the NW races too?

Daly Planet Editor said...

Soph, sounds like ARCA.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Is recorded Brewer better than live Brewer?

Dot said...

Hey, what's with Tim on during a yellow? Don't they save him for green flag racing?

Martin Vincent said...

They reported a flat right rear tire on Jason Leffler's car, but judging by the fender damage, I think right front is more like it.

Sophia said...

Full Throtttle...ugh

ZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Anonymous said...

Congratulations to Grampa :)

@anon 9:54--were you watching back in 2K3 when Wimmer was teammates with Herman? Stacker2 had their version of the "male enhancement" pill and Wimmer had it for their sponsor. Talk about being uncomfortable watching, the poor kid looked uncomfortable talking about it in the commercial. Those were disturbing as well

I'm enjoying Mr. Reid I hope it does lead to a FT role :)

red said...

not gonna lie, i'm not a fan of full throttle either.

Anonymous said...

Full throttle jumbled up mess & KB in lead - back to ARCA

TexasRaceLady said...

@Sophia,
Amen. Full Throttle doesn't do a thing for me.

Anonymous said...

I forgot to give *hugs* to Red and your friend :(

Anonymous said...

"Full Throttle" is still a gimmicky idea that adds nothing to the race coverage.

Doubtless some producer who doesn't know racing thinks it "sounds cool."

Martin Vincent said...

Somebody should have the ESPN producer try to listen to 12 radio stations at the same time, maybe then he'd realize how much sense Full Throttle makes.

The Loose Wheel said...

Gymmie, what was it called? YJStinger?

Thought Stacker 2 was a weight loss pill

Sophia said...

ok from the times I am looking BSPN still way too many in car or bumper cams.

66 in a wreck. surprise

Anonymous said...

What, Steve Wallace in a wreck?

No!

The Rusty says, "Unbelievable."

I don't think that word means what he thinks it means.

kbaskins said...

Black flag Wrecky Wallace!

--KarenB

Martin Vincent said...

@David - It was Stamina-Rx.

Did Rusty just say it was unbelievable that Steve wrecked?... Sure, Rusty!

Dot said...

OK, that should be a penalty regardless if Steve hits Scott or not. Isn't it all about intent?

Rusty defending Scott? Good for him.

red said...

@gymmie: many thanks. she's not had any experience w/this sort of thing and i've had plenty.

i know rusty makes me crazy-nuts but that had to be hard for him to watch his son's wreck from the in-car view.
and i think young mr wallace might be invited to the big truck after the race.

NorCalFan said...

@Dot,
Saw DJ playing golf on TV today in the American Century Celebrity Golf Tournament in Lake Tahoe. Commentators mentioned it was his second time in the tournament (which jives with his NASCAR retirement).

Anonymous said...

More accurate was Marty's "Here we go" during the wreck...as in, "We expected this at some point."

The Loose Wheel said...

Thanks MV. I remember now. I also remember them bailing on Kenny midseason. Shame.

Vicky D said...

Anon and others - I think full throttle sounds interesting.

The Loose Wheel said...

Full throttle has potential. I just dont like it as a restart gimmick.

Dave in OKC said...

Steve and his CC have indeed been issued an invitation to the truck after the race.

So much for that early flight to Maine...

IPingUPing said...

Maybe I shouldn't complain about Rusty being a homer, with his kid racing, he probably needs the money.

Sophia said...

That full throttle has been insipid since the first time I heard it...

Who thinks that is cool?

Same idiots that put LOUD MUSIC over talking/interviews..tho much of the media does that these days.

Honestly...

Ok, I have the BSPN tv musted for the EXTENZE commercial.

What's that other product that has a sultry talking chick with a 'come here big boy' look in her eye promoting some other junk..sheesh...that junk is all over tv.

SPEAKING OF JUNK, I was watching Fox NEWSWATCH I think it was last week and they showed a DIGGER PROMO!!?? Not NASCAR Digger.

TexasRaceLady said...

I was glad to hear Rusty defending Scott.

Dot said...

@ NorCalFan, Duh. I read that earlier today. Thank you.

What was dear Sophia calling it in an earlier post, CRAFT? Can't Remember A F....Thing? That's me.

Love the Planeteers, always filling in the blanks.

Sophia said...

p.s. I meant were not promoting NASCAR series just DIGGER stuff

Daly Planet Editor said...

Kudos to Rusty for being even handed and calling it like he sees it.

red said...

hey dot? you're recording arca, right? it is, as is usual for arca, a wreckfest.

Anonymous said...

Maybe I shouldn't complain about Rusty being a homer, with his kid racing, he probably needs the money.

I don't think it is a coincidence that they're now sponsored by (and pitching for) an auto insurance company.

Dot said...

Kevin going for the lead=cautions. Glad he made it this time.

Anonymous said...

@David--I think that was the drink they did, it was called StaminaRX (couldn't remember the name off hand had to go back to the results page). But yes their main focus was the WL Pills. I loved their commercials I wanted Rusty to come to Herman's rescue and take on Big Show :)

Vicky D said...

And Marty even pronounces Keselowski's name correctly whereas Rusty doesn't.

Martin Vincent said...

@David - I think Stacker 2 bailing on Kenny was due to the FDA coming down on them. If I'm not mistaken, all advertising and sales of Stacker 2 stopped at the time because of a problem with ephedrine.

Sophia said...

@Dot

A FLIPPIN' thing..not another F word. Honest..I have a cartoon on that somewhere on my puter..looking for it..might be on my old laptop with the duct tape and C Clamp holding it together. ..

The Loose Wheel said...

MV, yeah I remember. Its a bummer because they were a good sponsor to the sport. Loyal.

Just felt bad for KW but then AutoZone stepped in so not all was lost.

Late in ARCA race

Dave in OKC said...

66 held another lap - for FLIPPIN' teh 11 car...

Dot said...

@ red, yes, but I haven't seen it yet.

@ Anon 10:55, if US Fidelis was a car insurance company and not a mechanical breakdown policy, they would never be able to afford the premiums.

@ dear Sophia, See can't remember anything.

Anonymous said...

Like the way Rusty changes the subject when Steve gets penalized again?

If you can't discuss the action, you shouldn't be in the booth.

Sophia said...

http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e201/sophiaZ123/CRAFT_tag.jpg

Don't know if you can cut and paste..says I "suffer from a dreadful disease C.R.A.F.T. Can't remember a Flipping thing.

(JD it's not unsavory or anything, promise) Looks like Bill the Cat from that old Cartoon..was it Outland?

Hmmm Steven W made a gesture... :) Rusty pretty quiet

Good broadcast from Rick & Phil especially the last 15 or so laps.

The Loose Wheel said...

Love the way Allen calls a finish. gets ya jacked up even when your already up on the chip!

Dot said...

Could they have taken any longer to show McDowell in the wall?

Daly Planet Editor said...

Lot different than Jerry Punch tonight. Info and emotion.

TexasRaceLady said...

You're right, JD --- no crickets tonight.

Jimbacca said...

Arca was great. Amazing how rookies can battle it out without taking each other out. Some series should take notes.

Since I'm tardy to the party... From what I have seen. Steven crashed shocker and then someone took out the incredible pizza car a few laps later.

Lagasse was a class act in the interview. Who took him out?

Dot said...

@ JD, really? I didn't notice. ;)

Anonymous said...

Dot you will enjoy the ARCA race it lacks the junk on screen, & all the stuff we love about other races. It is just racin'. Good ending too

Dot said...

@ Jim, racing deal w/Gaughn. Convenient, huh?

Sophia said...

@Jojaye

Isn't it GReAT to watch a race without all the clutter..and WIDE SHOTS!

ESPN is bumper cam/then in car cam/roof cam/wide shot briefly/ lather, rinse, repeat

And still they dont' catch wrecks LIVE.

OUCH

Dave in OKC said...

Caution - just as Kyle was about to run out of fuel.

The Loose Wheel said...

Jim, just dont say who won the ARCA race. Dot recorded and will watch later.

Brendan out...

Jimbacca said...

Thats what I was thinking by the comments but that's weird for Brendan to stoop to doing a Steven. Must be rubbing off.

Sophia said...

I would NEVER be an IN RACE reporter..sheesh

Daly Planet Editor said...

Does this mean we have to start the owner in the TV booth discussion again?

The Loose Wheel said...

That was odd. Least he manned up

I'd watch a Wallace Family reality show---Rusty---the Czar, Kenny the Prankster, Mike...aka Johnny Drama & Steven the freaking spoiled Brat-Brendan Gaughn the crazy rich neighbor--(aka Howard the crazy neighbor pilot guy from the Newhart Show)-That's Racing....

red said...

ok, gang, morning comes early for this camper and i don't see n'wide beating the arca finish. so, as much as i'm enjoying marty reid in the booth, i'm gonna check out for the night.

what a great respite from the zaniness of the past few days in nascar-land! many thanks to the truck gang for a terrific broadcast -- again and as always! -- to the speed arca team because you guys made it even better than i could have hoped.

but the big thanks of the broadcast night has to go to marty reid: PxP done the way it should be! i may just start watching n'wide racing again, solely b/c of marty reid.

'night, all.

Dot said...

So much for Weed pitting under green for gas. Dang it.

You couldn't pay me enough to be the in race reporter. It should be used as a penalty.

Anonymous said...

WOW I'll have to rewind later to see what got saintly Stevie W a invite to hauler

The Loose Wheel said...

Wow. Rookie mistake there Ricky!

Anonymous said...

Somehow, I imagine Marty's, "Wow! What is happening here!" during the missed pit would have been complete silence had Jerry been calling this race.

Sophia said...

I missed latest Rusty comments..was listening to the grateful interviews of folks on ARCA race. I LOVE POST race interviews.

Dave in OKC said...

I wonder if JP is sitting at home watching this telecast and taking notes. We can only hope.

Good night red.

How do you wind up in the wrong pit stall? Better than missing it altogether I guess.

@ Anon 11:20, too funny.

This Full Throttle stuff does absolutely nothing for me.

@Bevo

I am a Jr fan but when that guy missed his pit, I thought of Jooooonyer myself first thing! :)

Ya gotta keep your sense of humor about this stuff.

In between the whining...

bevo said...

Sounds like this booth watched some TNT broadcasts, eh?

Anonymous said...

@Anon 1120 if you can put that show together sell it to SPEED - sounds way better than wrecked!

MikeC said...

Think we'd ever hear Jerry Punch say "I love this stuff!"???

@ bevo, you caught that, did you?

@ DaveOKC, Glad you're the optimist. I'm a realist myself.

Gee ya think a CUP guy might actually win one of these here NW races?

The Loose Wheel said...

im a optimistic realist

Dave in OKC said...

Marty has done an excellent job of covering the action back in the pack, then bringing our attention back to the leaders when necessary. Aside from his enthusiasm, that's a HUGE techical improvement over most of the NW telecasts this year.

The Loose Wheel said...

a, an...thats what i get for changing my wording mid sentence
