Live Blogging NASCAR's Saturday Night Doubleheader

First up on Saturday are the Camping World Trucks from Kentucky Speedway. As usual, it will be Krista Voda and The Set-Up that begins the coverage. This week, the pre-race show is at 6:30PM and the race begins shortly after 7PM ET.

Play by play veteran Rick Allen will be joined by analysts Phil Parsons and Michael Waltrip. On pit road will be Adam Alexander and Ray Dunlap. This is SPEED's experienced truck series team and the race should be exciting.

The Nationwide Series is the nightcap of the doubleheader and is racing this week at Gateway near St. Louis, MO. The announcing switch has happened and Marty Reid will be calling the remaining Nationwide Series races on ESPN for the rest of the season.

This may be exactly what the series needs to get some momentum going down the stretch. Rusty Wallace and Andy Petree are working with Reid this week and they should be fired-up for this stand-alone Nationwide Series race.

On pit road are Jamie Little, Dave Burns and Mike Massaro. Most of the heavy hitters are on vacation for this last weekend before the big grind to the finish begins for the NASCAR on ESPN team.

Once again, it will be fun to watch two networks take a very different approach to the same sport. The informality and good humor of SPEED will be an interesting contrast to the suits and ties of the ESPN gang.

This post will serve to host your comments on the two races tonight. To add your TV-related opinion, just click on the comments button below. This is a family-friendly website, please keep that in mind when posting.

Thanks for stopping by to watch these two races with us on the weekend.

They knew better though. He was that close and they were past the window where they knew he had to come in...

Great they broke out from commercial but not great they went away when they did.

AGAIN KENNY?! What in the world is wrong with Jay Robinson Racing?! Like 8 engines this year...

Dot said...

@ David 11:50, cute.

Nice breaking out of commercial. Reid is directing TV traffic like a madman.

" Reid is directing TV traffic like a madman."

And doing a great job.

Dot said...

@ Jo 11:50, talk about optimism.

BSPN has to notice the difference.

This has been both a good race and a model for how ESPN ought to cover ALL their races.

I can't help but think that when we go back to Cup, it'll be just like before, however.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Tell me this US Fidelis commercial is not hilarious right now.

kbaskins said...

I like the way Marty seems to have put his stamp on the directing too. The differences in the race seem to be not only from the booth. Maybe it's a different director, or maybe I'm just seeing things that aren't really there because I want the Marty Reid Experiment™ to be a resounding success.

So does US Fidelis cover Rusty's repair bills?

Does ExtenZe pop that rear clip back out for Conway?

Im gonna call false advertising here soon!

If the timing of the Harvick commercial break is the worst thing anyone has to say about this broadcast, then score a big W for ESPN tonight.

Anonymous said...

What's happening here?

Kenny was STILL on the track when they came out of the break. But he was black-flagged like three laps ago.

Dot said...

I hate that Extenze comml, caution's out, caution's out. When they're not really under caution, it makes me look at the TV.

@ David, you're killing me. Redeem yourself with humor.

The Loose Wheel said...

Yup, small glitch in an otherwise extremely solid broadcast

Dot said...

Go Reed go.

MikeC said...

This goes back to the adage....sometimes of the call of an event is only as good as the event itself. The racing on the track has been very entertaining. Gateway might be one of the most unsung tracks run by the 3 top series.

The Loose Wheel said...

I would actually be very happy if Reed pulls this off

MikeC said...

With Edwards in 3rd on those 4 tires, if there were a caution before the 5 lap to go mark, we could have a wild finish.

Dot said...

@ MikeC, good point. We'll see how the rest of the NW season goes.

MikeC said...

Edwards needs more than GWC laps to make a run at this, if a caution were to come out.

Ever notice Rusty never comments on Kenny & Mike? I'ts like he's embarassed that they are also rans....

Anonymous said...

I don't think Carl can win w/o caution

Dot said...

Think Weed will share the trophy with his crew since he hasn't won here before?

Congrats to KB & fans

And SDDD wins again...*ahem best Gomer Pyle voice* Surprise, Surprise, Surprise

The Loose Wheel said...

Kyle drove a great race tonight though. Didn't knock anyone out of the way, kept composed, gave a good pre-race interview...and hey...they won!

Woohooo!!

If only this were next week at IMS...

Dot said...

Oh well.

Daly Planet Editor said...

ESPN really needs the drop-down graphic on the finish. The slide across headshots are just not working.

Sophia said...

@Dot

What's the trophy?

Steinway Grand Piano?

Jigsaw puzzle?

or to fit his temperament, E-Z Bake Oven. :)

The Loose Wheel said...

Im happier for Reed than Kyle though. Confidence. Hope he does well next week in Indy.

Tell Danica to pack her lunch & get the heck outta here...

Sophia said...

Those slide head shots have never worked have they?

Again, another cool thing somebody must've thought up at a baseball game or a bowling alley.

DROP DOWN STATIONARY GRIDS are the way to go. :)

JD

Why did somebody Tweet that Paula Abdul got caught doing Meth and is leaving AIdol? It wasn't true which is why I asked.

Her new manager simply said she has not been asked back for next season and apparently it's odd. She's a trending topic.

Spitfire88 said...

There is something wrong with a broadcast when you can call how many laps to the next commercial and how many we miss during said commercials.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Absolutely horrible winner interview with Busch by Dave Burns.

Stop telling him what to ask and let him do his job. That was embarrassing.

The Loose Wheel said...

Yeah that was a weak winners interview

bevo said...

Best job by ESPN in eons. Marty was great, Andy solid as always and Rusty...

Dot said...

What's it mean? AKA, how do you feel?

Dot said...

Kevin wouldn't talk? Shades of Weed? I don't blame him for being mad. Whose idea was it for him not to pit?

Good night all - I really need to get some sleep! Old folks need lots of sleep ;)

The Loose Wheel said...

"Brad, does this top 5 validate your return to JGR, and can you carry this into ORP?"

But hey, I'm just a crazy fan...

Sophia said...

G Night Jo!:)

Sophia said...

Is it the NW crew HARVICK went ballistic on in radio a few weeks ago or a CUP race...I know he's had some horrible luck..so I might cut him some slack for one race.

Kyle makes it a habit to hide and run if he doesn't win

The Loose Wheel said...

JD, I think we have a formula that works finally with ESPN

Jimbacca said...

From what I saw (watched an excellent arca race) Great coverage.
Why is it the 'second string' pxp SMOKE the first string. Marty was great. Whenever people were drifting off he pulled them back in. Marty and Ralph for pxp.
Coverage was good. Covered pretty much everyone. Even pointed out S&P etc. And how about that johnny chapman he got beat by 4 other cars for s&p winner.
Nice to see they let Mike run the 0 on his home track instead of sp. Shame about Brendan. Sad if he did take someone out. I've been a fan since Walker Evans days.

kbaskins said...

I have to agree with the young whipper-snapper. Tonight's broadcast was pretty solid from top to bottom.

I can't wait to see what the Marty Reid Experiment™ looks like when Dale Jarrett is back in the booth.

Thanks, ESPN. I guess baby steps are better than no steps at all.

@ David
I would prefer DJ over Crusty but it was Reid who made the difference IMHO.

JD, Since you know Marty, I think you should let him know how much we all enjoyed him in the booth. A great call of the race.

Enjoy your Sunday everyone and thanks for stopping by.

There is a new post up about Darrell Waltrip appearing on Wind Tunnel this Sunday.

In just a short while, there will be a race telecast wrap up for your comments as well.

Have a great night!

bryan,

I think you just did. Those guys cruise your TDP comments every day.

Dot said...

@ NorCalFan, ditto.

@ Jim, the Brendan crash was just a racing deal. It's ironic to me that it had to be him and Scott, of all drivers.
