Live Blogging The Wide Open TNT Coverage From Daytona

There are few NASCAR TV telecasts more anticipated than the summer Sprint Cup Series Daytona race on TNT. That is the rock group Buckcherry above, who will be performing a number during the TNT pre-race show.

This is the only time of the entire year where NASCAR TV coverage takes on the format used in the IRL for years. While TNT calls it Wide Open, what they are doing is blending the TV commercials into the telecast while continuing to show the racing action. In return for agreeing to this format, the sponsors get additional logos on the screen and some additional mentions by the announcers.

Last year was perhaps the best telecast, where fans missed almost no laps on the track during the entire race. The only commercials aired full-screen are the ones inserted by the local cable TV companies. All of the national ads from TNT are presented with the action continuing on the screen.

TNT has ninety minutes of pre-race programming. Marc Fein will host with Kyle Petty and Larry McReynolds opening the telecast from the TNT infield stage. Tony Stewart is the guest and TNT is taking your questions for Stewart at the NASCAR.com website.

Wally Dallenbach will join Fein for the Countdown to Green show and focus on setting up the race. Once the race coverage gets underway, Dallenbach will be joined by Petty and Ralph Sheheen. This is the second TNT race for Sheheen in the play-by-play position. He will also call the final TNT event in Chicago.

Down on pit road will be Marty Snider, Lindsay Czarniak, Matt Yocum and SPEED's Adam Alexander. This is a big opportunity for Alexander, but many NASCAR fans thought that TNT would bring in veteran Wendy Venturini for that open slot.

With the double-file restarts, look for TV director Mike Wells to keep the cameras wide and watch for the racing action throughout the field. This has become a TNT trademark for the TV coverage and the reaction from fans has been very positive.

TNT also originates great triple-splits on the caution flag pit stops and has been super at tracking the cars as they race off pit road. That is certainly going to be an interesting part of the telecast as strategies unfold with the new restart rules.

RaceBuddy is again in operation for broadband computer users through the NASCAR.com website free of charge. This feature has four additional cameras, team scanner audio and even a designated pit reporter. It also allows for messaging across several different services like Facebook and Twitter.

Speaking of Twitter, both Petty and Fein will continue to use this service during the race to interact with fans. TNT has really been pushing the new media technology this season and it has been working well.

This post will serve to host your comments about the TNT coverage of the Sprint Cup Series race from Daytona. To add your TV-related opinion, just click on the comments button below. This is a family-friendly website, please keep that in mind when posting. Thanks for taking the time to stop by on this holiday weekend.

@darbar--this time it was just that they didn't sell tickets there possibly due to damage from the flooding

@PammmmmmmmmH--they have people tweeting for them when they're racing. They tweet things they're saying on the radio and such.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Man, is that sweet or what?

Lou said...

I like the position scrool on the left during the comm being shown on the right.

kbaskins said...

@ Martin

You're right. This is better than TSN previous method of dealing with wide-open coverage.

red said...

nice vertical of the running order during the side by side commercial break just then.

Daly Planet Editor said...

And cutting the race with wideshots only during that commercial. Worked for me. Pay the bills and let me see the race.

Dot said...

Once BSPN takes over, my race viewing days may end. I am loving this. They even have the vertical ticker. Does it get any better than this?

red said...

hey lou! great minds thinking alike, eh?

Anonymous said...

36 to the garage as well.

Anonymous said...

This commercial deal is great. And the commercials are good enough to where I watch the things. The Army-Ryan Newman one was great.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Mark Martin interview? Did I miss it getting a drink?

Haus14 said...

kudos to ralph for mentioning the S&P's

Lou said...

red, enjoying this broadcast very much so far.

Brad Ford said...

Watching JPM try to dodge Martin's crash, I was reminded how much he has improved. Runs up front most of the time.

It is amazing how much the "Open Wheel Guys" have improved.
AJ - needs a good sponsor/car and he can drive.
Hornish - I thought he was toast. While not ready to contend for the Cup, he seems to improve every week.

BTW - could someone get Carpentier a sponsor. That guy is a riot.

red said...

@jd: if so, i missed it as well.

Newracefan said...

JD ummm No

Dot said...

No MM interview, JD. Didn't even notice it. Having too much fun. They'll get to him I'm sure.

jane said...

I don't have a large tv and I'm not getting the broadcast in HD, so the ticker numbers aren't really clear. Did anyone notice Harvick's number become illegible? something about the color overlaps.

The Loose Wheel said...

nemecheck came back out to pass the 36...37 is lapped for some reason and the 78 lost the draft

Anonymous said...

@red youu miss the point, Adderall is an amphetamine

Martin Vincent said...

I think Nemechek came back out on track just to pass Carpentier for position. Raines is a lap down, but looks to be going for a full run so far.

PammH said...

wasn't sure TS wasn't having problems when BK comml started...oops, KP thought so too!!

Anonymous said...

@red

REALLY sorry I brought this up lets just drop it OK?

red said...

ok, enough in-car from tony, thank you.

and does matt have mark martin or not?

man, if mears didn't have BAD luck, he'd have no luck at all.

darbar said...

Mears had one of the fastest cars all weekend. This stinks for him

Dot said...

I LOVE the booth guys. What excitement. Good production truck coverage too.

red said...

@ri88girl: yeppers. no problem.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Great replay selection tonight.

darbar said...

Does anyone know, had Mark Martin ever won the Daytona 500?

Martin Vincent said...

Raines gets back on lead lap, and maybe my prediction of 40-45 laps for Nemechek will come true.

Dot said...

@ dar, no, he hasn't.

Phathead said...

Ya know, I really REALLY like that pit split there. Wish they could do that every week.

Sophia said...

Seems to be more in car cams tonight than usual...not liking that and while the cam was aimed at an in car driver, 07 wrecked.

I saw it on RB first...same with MM wreck..RB is good once you pick your view.

OTHERWISE more commercials EVEN w/Refresh IF you cange views...I know that's how they pay for it but just don't be in a hurry to change views. :)

PammH said...

@darbar-hope on MM..

Martin Vincent said...

@darbar - No, just came close when Harvick won in 2007.

SonicAD said...

Who wants to bet Bill Weber did the voice on that BK ad and it had to be dubbed over late by Ralph.

Jack from PA said...

TNT should consider keeping the ticker on the bottom of the screen all the time, and having the triple pits laid out like it is every week. I like it.

Sophia said...

Thanks to the sponsors INDEED for allowing this wide open/side by side type coverage.

Time your bladders everybody!

ha

The Loose Wheel said...

i dont like the pit split, then again i have a standard def tv and no widescreen so im out of luck i suppose.

12 was wrecking loose, little shocked it took them that long to comment on that rather than just say he came down the track unknowingly

Phathead said...

Jack - They can't do the triple pits like that every week due to the fact they still have to cater to the non widescreen TVs out there

Jack from PA said...

@ Sonic,

That's what I thought when I first heard Ralph's voice.

Haus14 said...

good catch sonic

am19psu said...

man, if mears didn't have BAD luck, he'd have no luck at all.

One might argue that it is something other than luck...

TNT is covering this race about as well as you possibly can, except for the lack of Mark Martin interview.

Martin Vincent said...

Looks like Nemechek made a liar out of me, looks like he's out after 25 laps.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Ready for Mark Martin interview anytime now. Is he still in the Infield Care Center? I was told he was already interviewed on the radio.

Brad Ford said...

Ted on the mower. Thank god topless ted was in the small box during the commercial. Full size, that would have been ugly.

Jack from PA said...

@ Phathead,

Wasn't even thinking of it. Too spoiled with my HD TV here... I really feel for those with SD when they show the small ticker on the bottom left with just the car numbers.

Phathead said...

I'm a stats geek so I am totally diggin' the stats they keep throwin up on the bottom of the screen

Phathead said...

Jack - I agree completely. Hopefully in the coming years we'll push out all those 4:3 TVs so we can enjoy more stuff like this lol

Jack from PA said...

Pretty disappointed with the MM interview, or lack thereof. It sounded like they were setting it up when Mears spun, but nothing.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Imagine being the ESPN guys and watching this....

Phathead said...

Can we please get Ralph to say Mike Eddy just once pleaseeeeeeeeeeeeeeee? For old times sake? lol

Anonymous said...

87 to the garage.

88 just told that rain is 20 miles out. Not a big cell.

Jack from PA said...

@ Phathead,

Agreed. The stats are awesome and give us something to look at. I noticed that when they first rolled out the Wide Open coverage in '07. Really liking the coverage so far.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Too bad they can't sneak the car sounds under the ads...maybe someday.

Did you see Sadler almost lose it? That would have been big.

rich said...

Noticed my RB video is ahead of my TV feed from Directtv

red said...

Daly Planet Editor said...
Imagine being the ESPN guys and watching this....

somehow, jd, i don't think they're watching this at all. i think they do their "thing" and then it all fades until next week -- at least that how it seems during their part of the broadcast schedule.

Sophia said...

Jr's spotter sees lightning...rain about 20 miles away...on twitter

Jack from PA said...

JD,

Can't we enjoy this coverage without a reference to ESPN????

I'm already dreading Indy!

bevo said...

@JD- I think ESPN guys are so full of themselves they don't even realize how bad they suck compared to this. Nor do I think they care one bit.

Phathead said...

I'm getting married the day of Indy. So I won't be subject to watching it lol

Hotaru1787 said...

Lot of tense momements on the track so far.

Jack from PA said...

These cars are all over the place I sense a wreck coming soon.... real soon.

Haus14 said...

Phat, I went to jr. high/ high school with Mike Eddy's nephew, one of my class mates.

Martin Vincent said...

@Phathead - Congratulations, I just got married in Hawaii about 4 months ago. And if you're a stats geek, click on my name and enjoy!

Lou said...

finally a mark martin reference.

Jack from PA said...

Looks like we're not getting our MM interview. Matt just blew Ralph off it seemed haha.

red said...

ok, that's TWICE now: if you're gonna throw it to matt to tell us about mark martin, then matt? tell us about mark martin, not ryan newman!

Anonymous said...

@Phathead--who is Mike Eddy?

bevo said...

@Phathead- Congratulations!

Newracefan said...

Something happened to the 42 he's about to get lapped?

Phathead said...

Haus - That's cool. I used to watch ASA all the time when I was younger. Used to love watching Eddy and Benson duke it out before Benson went to NASCAR. Always wondered what happened to Eddy and Rick Beebe, etc

Martin Vincent said...

@Gymmie - Eddy's an old ASA driver, drove a #88 Goodwrench Pontiac that looked like Earnhardt's.

Phathead said...

Gymmie - Mike Eddy was one of the best drivers on the ASA circuit for many many years. Ralph called the majority of the ASA races on TNN back in the day

bevo said...

Looks like a belt failure on JPM's tire

The Loose Wheel said...

phat...you need to post things like this at the circus too...

lol.

montoya did good by coming in. wow, never seen a tire like that before

red said...

that right tire from the 42 certainly was not debris and it doesn't look like a camber issue to me, either. larry mac seems to be implicating air pressure . . .

Phathead said...

David - Who are you at the Circus?

Martin Vincent said...

TNT not so good at updating who's "off" and who's "out", all the cars not running are shown as "off", even Blaney who parked it 40 laps ago.

Dot said...

Congrats Phat. Missed JPM, I had an unscheduled pit stop myself.

red said...

MV: that's why we love having you here at TDP: you keep us up to speed on this stuff!

Hotaru1787 said...

Dot- too funny! But we race fans all need a 'pit stop'

Lou said...

lol, Dot. TMI, your killing me. just to funny.

Martin Vincent said...

Teammates Andretti and Raines look to be staying out of trouble 10 seconds behind the pack.

The Loose Wheel said...

phat--wolfy.

14 and 11 look like the best 2 cars out there today...77 and 24 are reasonably fast but i wonder if they can get there. time for the cars that can handle to show themselves

Phathead said...

David - Huh... well I'd post there if I hadn't broken it

Anonymous said...

@Phathead and MV--thanks :)

@Phathead--congratulations on your upcoming wedding :)

Martin Vincent said...

@red - Thanks! I have about 22 years as a NASCAR fan and an eye for detail. Unfortunately, I won't be here next weekend (family time) or for Bristol (have tickets).

Jack from PA said...

If Junior's saying he's going to blow a tire from it being too tight, wouldn't he rim ride???

Daly Planet Editor said...

Pretty darn good picture selection tonight. EZ to watch.

Sophia said...

oh boy...Jr problems...sigh..fearing a tire will blow

Hotaru1787 said...

We almost ended up going to Daytona this weekend (not sure exactly to what, as it fell through).

Sophia said...

Isn't this Larry MAc commercial form last year :)

I am hungry and feeling that way about chocolate eclairs...none in the house and don't know how to make them...just came thru my brain.

That commercial is actually from '07. Saw a couple Nextel Cup logos in the commercial.

red said...

Jack from PA said...
If Junior's saying he's going to blow a tire from it being too tight, wouldn't he rim ride???

my guess: it's daytona so unless someone's willing to go up there with him, he'd be running solo at a restrictor plate track -- not good.

and i swear this is the third week that the 17 car is the first car to the pits for a green flag stop. strategy or bad mileage?

Hotaru1787 said...

mmmm...chocolate....

Daly Planet Editor said...

2010 for Hornish? Anyone...

The Loose Wheel said...

he will have a ride next year. they are committed long term to sam and he's had a great year and was having a great run

Phathead said...

No matter what I try, for some reason I cannot like Hornish

Daly Planet Editor said...

Reboot the cable box Ken. Unplug and reboot.

red said...

did matt say "blading" on the left front? not sure what that might be . . .

Jack from PA said...

@ red,

That's the only thing I could think of. Thing is when they showed his on-board he was attempting to pass Logano and a couple others who were on the outside. Just a random thought.

Hornish is another one who would have no luck at all if he didn't have bad luck.

Hotaru1787 said...

I can't stand Hornish myself.

MikeC said...

This race reminds me of recent Daytona 500s. Everyone's going through the motions, saving their cars, but by about lap 120 or so things will start to brew in terms of intensity.

Dot said...

@ JD, Hornish is running better this year. Last year I thought he'd be gone this year.

Someone clarify. How many sets of tires do the teams have? Isn't it unlimited?

bevo said...

I still say that looks like belt failure on the tires - sounds crazy but that's what it looks like to me with those limited looks at them

Steve L. said...

These tire problems make me nervous with Indy coming up. Even though they said they have a better tire for that track.

Phathead said...

C'mon, foam on the track? That's another ASA reference! We need... nay, we must hear Mike Eddy's name!

diane said...

That's why Ralph is great. He jumped right in to encourage the other guys to explain why having an issue with the left front was unusual.

Anonymous said...

Sophia--emergency eclairs--crescent rolls with vanilla pudding inside, chocolate syrup over? Or pound cake or angel cake if you have anything like that. FWIW

Martin Vincent said...

Can't trust the TNT ticker, but I'm assuming Mark Martin is out for good. Right?

Jack from PA said...

The amount of tires can't be too much, considering a few teams in practice mentioned that they were saving sets for the race in anticipation of this.

Phathead said...

MV - I can't imagine they would be able to fix Martin's car. That thing was trashed.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Did anyone hear Mark Martin on the radio? He is OK right?

Jack from PA said...

Awesome job TNT for showing the 99/12 pit road incident. This 24 hours after ESPN basically ignored two separate incidents on pit road.

Hotaru1787 said...

Gosh, that squeaking is driving me insane (they HAD to start up the fireworks now).

I went out of my room, front door was open and the smoke from outside got in a little bit.

Didn't help my already sniffy nose.

am19psu said...

did matt say "blading" on the left front? not sure what that might be...

When the tire gently rubs against the quarterpanel, it causes wear and a shine to the tire. Speed showed it off J. Gordon's car at practice.

rich said...

Larry Mac said that each team was allowed 6 sets of tires. I thought they were unlimited in Cup

Dot said...

@ MV, yes, MM out.

Daly Planet Editor said...

My neighborhood sounds like a shooting gallery with all the fireworks right now.

Phathead said...

DPE - They did say he was in his hauler earlier, so I would assume he's ok. Probably just PO'd

MikeC said...

Mark was interviewed on MRN....he's ok. Said it was his fault.

Dot said...

@ rich, That's what I thought too. When did that change?

Hotaru1787 said...

At least it wasn't as bad as where I used to live... so many going off it sounded like a 'war zone'.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Jack, I still never found out what happened in that second pit road incident last night.

Anonymous said...

@Sophia--yes they play that same Subway commercial every year they need a new one

red said...

@am19psu: thanks. i'd never heard that expression before. knew the phenomenon but never heard that term.

Sophia said...

LOL thanks for chocolate eclair tip. My nephew emailed asking for my 'chocolate eclair dessert' made with French Vanilla pudding and cool whip, graham crackers and then I make semi sweet chocolate frosting. But it's too much for just me and my room mate.

guess that's what I was hankering for. Haven't had "real eclairs" since my brother dated a girl from NYC 20 years ago who brought some with her on the plane!!

WOnder what's going on with the tires...Kenny W said they sometimes baby Goodyear too much and if TS has problems he will crucify them..glad he's ok so far.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Thanks Mike, wonder why he did not do TV?

The Loose Wheel said...

blading was also mentioned on the 14 radio...someone needs to explain this.

Unless I missed it I haven't seen anyone say it here, but on the SPEED boards folks are saying they're getting FULL commercials during caution and apparently folks have tweeted Kyle about it because he confirmed that it's a local cable issue and not TNT as they're not doing any breakway commercials anywhere.
