Live Blogging The Wide Open TNT Coverage From Daytona
There are few NASCAR TV telecasts more anticipated than the summer Sprint Cup Series Daytona race on TNT. That is the rock group Buckcherry above, who will be performing a number during the TNT pre-race show.
This is the only time of the entire year where NASCAR TV coverage takes on the format used in the IRL for years. While TNT calls it Wide Open, what they are doing is blending the TV commercials into the telecast while continuing to show the racing action. In return for agreeing to this format, the sponsors get additional logos on the screen and some additional mentions by the announcers.
Last year was perhaps the best telecast, where fans missed almost no laps on the track during the entire race. The only commercials aired full-screen are the ones inserted by the local cable TV companies. All of the national ads from TNT are presented with the action continuing on the screen.
TNT has ninety minutes of pre-race programming. Marc Fein will host with Kyle Petty and Larry McReynolds opening the telecast from the TNT infield stage. Tony Stewart is the guest and TNT is taking your questions for Stewart at the NASCAR.com website.
Wally Dallenbach will join Fein for the Countdown to Green show and focus on setting up the race. Once the race coverage gets underway, Dallenbach will be joined by Petty and Ralph Sheheen. This is the second TNT race for Sheheen in the play-by-play position. He will also call the final TNT event in Chicago.
Down on pit road will be Marty Snider, Lindsay Czarniak, Matt Yocum and SPEED's Adam Alexander. This is a big opportunity for Alexander, but many NASCAR fans thought that TNT would bring in veteran Wendy Venturini for that open slot.
With the double-file restarts, look for TV director Mike Wells to keep the cameras wide and watch for the racing action throughout the field. This has become a TNT trademark for the TV coverage and the reaction from fans has been very positive.
TNT also originates great triple-splits on the caution flag pit stops and has been super at tracking the cars as they race off pit road. That is certainly going to be an interesting part of the telecast as strategies unfold with the new restart rules.
RaceBuddy is again in operation for broadband computer users through the NASCAR.com website free of charge. This feature has four additional cameras, team scanner audio and even a designated pit reporter. It also allows for messaging across several different services like Facebook and Twitter.
Speaking of Twitter, both Petty and Fein will continue to use this service during the race to interact with fans. TNT has really been pushing the new media technology this season and it has been working well.
This post will serve to host your comments about the TNT coverage of the Sprint Cup Series race from Daytona. To add your TV-related opinion, just click on the comments button below. This is a family-friendly website, please keep that in mind when posting. Thanks for taking the time to stop by on this holiday weekend.

«Oldest ‹Older 401 – 600 of 621 Newer› Newest»That accident is certainly going to make the Chicago race much more important than it usually is...
i think we need an update on those involved in that mess: ya' know -- who's in repairs, who's out, who's where.
Have a great Sunday holiday Pammmmmmmmmm....
Tune into RB during local ads. Did I tell you guys, I LOVE this race and the coverage.
ok, i love tony but i'll bet you big $$ he wasn't the one climbing around in that car to switch places with the bk king!
This is so pleasant. TNT is doing a awesome job. I'm not screaming at the TV or muting the picture and listening to MRN.
Even good old Jenna Fryer is watching on TV and asking where are the driver interviews?
@ MV,
I agree totally, but my point is having this for one race a year is just a tease!
I'm quite pleased with this wide open coverage, the lack of DFRSOS, no rodents or other childish cartoons. I'm just watchin' a really good race on TV. No multi tasking except when I want.... Heaven
I mean sound. Too much wine...lol
5 back 88 OUT
Jojaye, I agree, heaven
That just stinks for Jr. Kenny Wallace has been Twittering that he thought Jr was a lock to win this race. I'm a Jr fan and if it weren't for bad luck, he'd have none at all.
@red,
I was thinking the same thing --- that surely wasn't Tony's rearend in that car.
I'm surprised someone isn't designated as a "care center-garage area" pit reporter to talk to drivers as they fall out of the race.
@Jack - Maybe a tease, but better than nothing at all. While I'd like to see the format used in more races, I'll enjoy it while we have it.
@red - Gilliland is also listed as "out" as per the ticker.
Boy, Kenny Wallace sure uses some "blue" language on Twitter.
BTW, does anyone know how to respond to specific Tweets? I would love to send a Tweet to KW or Wendy Venturini, asking them questions.
When they showed and talked about Regan Smith, I noticed some blue reflective flames on the car, really nice touch for the night race. I'm sure those are "ghost" flames that didn't show up in daylight.
MV: where are you getting info on "out" cars? radio?
Poor David he was staying with the pack even though he was 4 laps down. Only thing that will save this for me is if JJ wins.
Just got home and started watching the broadcast. Think the guys are doing a good job but I'm in information overload on the tv screen.
@darbar - just put the @ in front of their twitter name exactly like it shows in the post. No space like this @darbar
It just keeps getting better and better, glad the race itself is fun to watch or I go to bed
MV i saw it on day practice too for regan. thought the car was blue, but someone informed me those were ghost flames on a black car done in blue. looks sharp.
Jojaye don't they have to follow you on Twitter for that to work
Just thought I would poke my head in and say how much I like watching this race.
If all the races were done like this Nascar would pick up a bunch of new fans and get back a lot of past fans.
Now back to the race.
Thanks Jojaye
dar, just put your cursor on the right side of the message and two icons will appear. One is to delete and one is to respond.
Click on the respond and the address of the person will appear uptop in the type box.
You can also just manually type the address with a @ in front of it and then send.
Let me know if that works for you.
I told KW to give his wife the phone. He is just getting himself into it deeper...lol.
@darbar--just start a new tweet with the @ and then their twitter name (i.e. @Kenny_Wallace), or just hit the reply arrow on any of their tweets and it'll open a new reply window (or if you're tweeting from the twitter homepage it'll take you to the response box).
Also you have to be unprotected in order for them to get it. If you're protected and they're not following you then they won't get the tweet.
Newrace - I know to send a direct message they have to follow. I doubt that many "important" people follow me - yet I have gotten responses that way.
@red - Saw Gilliland as "out" on the TNT ticker, I'm just watching on TV and looking at Live Leaderboard on NASCAR.com
@David - Normally the #78 is flat black, I didn't notice what the car looked like during the practice sessions, but those flames look good under the lights.
Thanks for stopping by Charlie!
By coincidence, I believe this has timed about right for TNT when it comes time for a local break. They've all occurred under caution, if I'm not mistaken.
@ JD, I'm slowly learning to tweet. Did you get my response? Didn't mean to hijack the thread just now.
Did I tell you guys, I LOVE this race and coverage?
Ever seen Wally's tank? Hilarious.
@MV: thanks. i use the fox leaderboard and they just give laps down. i generally don't follow the ticker on the tv at all.
Tires seem to be downplayed. Track isn't rubbering in and 20 laps seem to be the magic number until they blow. Tire sets are running out.
Dot, I get tons of Tweets during a race, what is your Twitter name?
Mark Martin is back out on the track, he was listed as "off" on the ticker, but I thought that was in error. He's 81 laps down.
Hi ink,
I think you are right. Now that the rain is not coming, tires are going to be an issue.
wally says these new cars are like shoeboxes.
or "flying bricks."
then wally says: "you can bang then together."
did wally have a tough childhood with few toys and so resprted to banging shoeboxes together?
Did Hamlin advance his position under the yellow line?
that mystery word in my post was "resorted."
Ralph is funny, calls it "that double-file restart thing".
@red ---
I figured that out --- the "o" and the "p" are next to each other.
@ JD, Buffythecat. About 7:45/10:45. I just want to know if it worked. You're my test. XOXO
I bet that tire problem will not be mentioned from the booth with Goodyear running commercials
WWAAAIIITTT....did that Goodyear commercial say Dale Junior won at CHICAGO last year? i wasnt paying attention but i swear i heard Chicago
Thanks for the information, everyone. This blog is so great with nice people
@ dar, isn't it though? I love TDP.
wickedj: i thought i heard that as well.
Grrrrrr...
I believe that Goodyear commercial is a couple of years old. The same one they used the first year of WO in '07.
This is the point in the race the activity will pick up a ton. The point where cautions start to breed cautions.
Is Ralph ready to lose his voice?
@nrf--to DM you have to follow that person but if they're not following you then they can't respond. If you're protected then the only folks who will get your tweets are those who follow you. And they recently changed it to where you only see the @ of the folks you follow. So if JD sends a tweet to @joeblow and I'm not following joeblow I won't see it but if he sends one to @kylepetty and I follow Kyle then I'll see it. And you no longer see other folks tweets on other people's pages only what that person has sent.
@darbar--yup tons of nice folks here :)
That's what I love about these guys! They're chatting away and simultaneously react to the action on the track and give their commentary! No *crickets* here
Dot, I got it and sent you one back. Check the column on the right for your msgs.
This is really fun coverage.
6 cautions, 6 sets of tires. Now what happens after this? As Mike C says, cautions breed cautions.
Thanks, JD. Btc.
wickedj, red, that makes three of us that heard chicago
Are the lack of driver interviews being prompted by the shortage of pit reporters?
TNT- if you are watching . . . send Larry Mac to hang out by the infield care center.
we just drove to McDonalds drive thru for sundaes. Driving down the hill from the house can see for miles straight ahead..looked like LSD trip with all the fireworks! I can't believe folks set off such shows.
crazy really the risks..and expense. It's never been THIS nuts. above the trees a street or two over sounds like cannons or huge guns.
and a police station is down the hill and up the street..not doing a darn thing about it. We saw three police cars at the intersection and you can hear and see them all around.
guess they are more concerned about drunks then folks blowing themselves up.
MRN has a BOATLOAD of commercials in the 15 minutes or so we were gone...I see they've had to really load up commercials this year.
ESPN, are you watching???? This is how to show a race. Great coverage on pit road. I dread when ESPU--you stink, takes over.
@dot--I added you :)
MikeC: it cant be old because they said "Dale Earnhardt's Hendrick Motorsports team won at Chicago's LifeLock 400 last year"
@ Gymmie, thanks. Don't get too bored :).
Actually, I think Chicagoland and Michigan have the same race sponsor, but he won the MIS race.
I got you too Gymmie.
I also heard Chicago
Sophia, right now I'm piffed as heck. My neighbors are shooting off fireworks---the great big ones that the cities use for their displays---and my house filled with the smoke from all their stuff going off. I can't hear the TV because of the noise. We've been so dry for about 3 weeks, and I'm terrified that one of those things is going to hit my house and start it on fire. I wish the government would outlaw all fireworks for private individuals.

the script also says the win was on father's day so that clearly was NOT the chicago race but was last year at michigan.
Ryan!!!
thank you, wally, for HATING that "shoot-out style' crap! you are my hero.
Anybody got a DVR can re-watch that ad spot and tell us if we're going crazy or if they did say Junior won at Chicago last year
Missed this from Kyle on twitter earlier . . .
The Drivers names in "RED" mean they are "COKE FAMILY DRIVERS"... 14,16,29,31,11, you know who thy are... LOL
Is that a gentle jab at announcers who decide to explain the identity of the driver and team every time he mentions a number? Dr.?
Oh, I was wondering what was up with those 'peppermint candy' highlight... that's what it reminded me of.
Darbar
I HATE these fireworks too..if the smoke gets in your house, can't you call the police to complain..anonymously from cell phone..so many in all directions from us but so many trees have no idea what house..but it sounds even closer to you. :(
We heard a lot last night but the HUGE ones are tonight.
I love this coverage.
I also dread BSPNUstink
Is it my imagination or is Wally much more animated and informative tonight.
Those 3 guys are having fun.
Wake up, ESPN, this is how a race announcing should sound.
OK, I re-watched that spot with the guys in the blimp and they said Jr won last year on Father's Day, so that would be the Michigan race
Hey....Kyle Petty just answered my question! That was a first.
Hey JD thank Kyle for us, we all know that was your Twitter. Not sure I buy it but.....
JD, looks like KP read your tweet...Pretty lame answer IMO.
@ JD, what'd he say?
wow! great exchange between kyle and ralph that started with "have i ever cuseed you in my career?" and ended up with "keep it up, ralph, and you'll find yourself back down there!"
as we've noted before: it's like watching the race with your buddies. and i like it.
@JD--w00t! Kyle answered your question :)
@anon 10:36--he probably received a bunch of tweets on it.
Sophia, I live on four acres in a small subdivision in a more rural area, but they're shooting the fireworks off on the edge of my property, but still on theirs. By the time the sheriff gets here, it'll be over and done with. We're pretty far from a sheriff's office living in the boonies.
That was wild, not only did he answer my question about driver interviews on the air but he actually sent me a Twitter message back....wow.
I'm surprised someone (not from TNT, but from Goodyear) didn't proof that Goodyear commercial, before releasing it for air. The confusion must've been from both Michigan and Chicago's races are sponsored by LifeLock.

it's a new world in nascar tv, isn't it?
I thought it was a lame answer too as I heard Jr interviewed on MRN soon after the wreck.
methinks TNT is short on pit reporters or something.
Still, this camera work beats ESPN to heck.
AND these guys ARE FUN TO LISTEN TO and have chemistry.
Can't fake that..either it's there or it's not. Heck I even enjoyed them with Weber but they have really loosened up with Ralph. Good deal.:)
Has Montoya really gotten his stuff together or what?
Dot I'm also following you on twiter but I don't know how to post a personal answer (yet!)
This is unexpected. I thought there would be packs of cars running together at this stage in the race. More spread out than I was thinking.
Hey, they are keeping the sound from the cars under the commercial break!! Awesome!
@ Vickym=, I saw that. Thanks. I answered you. Look for that arrow thingy.
FYI, my Twitter name is darcin. I don't have much interesting to say, but you can follow me.
Gymmie
Twitter also changed the look completely of the people following you and I can NOT get used to it..more busy or something.
removing the a replies bothered many of us..but I guess for the folks who chat too much, they changed it for all. If somebody tweets 100 times a day I UNFOLLOW. some Tweet way too many times a day.
Kyle Busch talking about shifter issues? he trying to do a fake out..he is always adding about drama problems and then does fine.
@ dar, aka darcie?
is this s debris caution? i think i missed the reason for the flag . . .
Gymmie
I meant when you click on the who's following you page...text is light gray and hard for my old lady eyes to read!!
B/c in my area we are getting regular commercials too.
There's been no announcement yet on tv on cause of caution
was there anyone who pitted later than these guys and had fresher tires..if so this yellow garbage flag is a rip off for them
@ Gymmie, "Kyle Busch talking about shifter issues? he trying to do a fake out..he is always adding about drama problems and then does fine."
You got that right.
What is the caution for?
Sorry, it's darcin. My bad.
Dot, arrow thingy is not a Twitter term! :)
Caution is for debris. This might set up for a great finish.
@ rich, drama. Only as TNT knows it. Really, it's from NASCAR.
Where did they get tires?
Boy, great in-car audio--now we have even more confirmation that Nascar and WWE are related.
Boy, Jr's pit crew needs to take lessons from Stewart's. Seven for seven on leaving the pit first? That's awsome.
I'm predicting we'll see some hairy restarts from here on out.
@ JD, I know.
gotcha ... drama
@darbar: they are excellent tonight and it also helps to have that first pit stall.
nascar was too scared a tire would blow, but too worried about image to say that's why they threw the flag, this is laughable
Im watching Tony Stewart on HotPass and a lap before this yellow his spotter said NASCAR was looking for debris in turn 2, Tony came back and said theres nothing there..then came the yellow lol
Also, hes starting on the inside
Someone please explain to me this whole Toyota Drivers Update? Why do they get an update, or have I missed the Ford Driver's Updates or the Chevy Driver's Updates?
@vicky--if you're on the Twitter home page go to the right of the message and you'll see a Star to favorite it and under there will be an arrow to reply, click on the arrow and it'll take you to the reply box or do in the reply box @ and the user name all together. If you're using a stand alone application then it varies but it's all the same to reply. Just look for the arrow.
@ dar, it's only Gibbs. They never mention MWR.
Why the heck is JJ pushing the Shrub? That sucks
Thanks all for info on twitter. Boring updates coming . . . . .
Dot, on this last update, they talked about all the Toyota drivers.
I think its safe to safe my fantasy team this week is pretty much toast...unless Smoke wins
GWC maybe, they are going to have to blow off the track, the 82 dumped debris everywhere
they hesitated to throw the caution, but throw one with no debris, this is amazing..
@ dar, figures. The one time I missed it. The past has only shown Gibbs.
So, we know 18 and 11 will stay together..i ASSUME 14 and 48 will work together...and a wildcard in 5th with Kenseth
wickedj-
But in the double file restarts - SHOOTOUT style, the 11 and the 18 are in different lanes
that FAKE PHANTOM caution ticked me off and indeed is a joke.
#NASCARFAIL
oops..that only works on Twitter
Anon - Ah yes, i will dawn my dunce cap now
J.D.,
I love those great overheads, particularly when the camera drifts back to show the gap to the second pack. It's the embodiment of the old Chinese proverb: "A picture is worth ten thousand words." *
West Coast Kenny Fong
Alameda, California
*commonly misquoted as "A picture is worth a thousand words." "Ten thousand" was considered to be synonymous with "infinite" in the old days before technology because it was such a fantastically large amount.
Ok so we're back to what i said a moment ago :P
Now the 11 and 18 are together . . .
Only 7 minutes left in the broadcast window
Oh Crap. Anybody but the Shrub.
*throws the TV*
NOOOO not kyle
HOLY CARP...repeat of Talladega
YAYAYAYAYAAYAYAYAYAYAAYAY!!!!!!!!!!
Holy Crap !!!!! Can you believe that?
We might have some really hurt guys out there
Missed it....
ah man, i hope they're all ok. while in understand the cheering, i don't agree with it at all.
Holy sh.....
OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WOO HOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
did Tony win!!
YESSS Tony wins, Shrubby not
Um....who won?
Bob Pockrass called that one on Twitter
bobpockrassThis should be a pretty exciting final four laps. Just hope that all cars stay on the ground
Kyle had it coming, just like K. Petty said. Boy that was a nasty hit from Kasey
expensive race for TNT lol
YES!!!!!!!!! Tony....
hope EVERYBODY is ok but it's about TIME Kyle got payback....
I hope we hear everybody is ok...
OH MAN!! That camera got broken!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
nascar has to lay down some rules on blocking, tony had no option
whoa nellie! what a finish!
Worst thing is no post-race or VL
whooo!
I too hope everyone is OK. Blame it on Weed.
What a finish.
part of this is caused by restrictor plates, this is why earnhardt said this isn't racing
see, the emotion these guys show when there's a finish like that is what a race fan wants to hear.
now, all i'd like is a recap that let's us know everyone is ok physically and to hear from tony.
So, I wonder if Kyle is already on his helicopter?
Well, Nascar got what they always want--setting up phony racing to cause crowd pleasing wrecks....kind of like bringing a metal chair into the wrestling ring. Except someone can get really hurt in Nascar.
Watching it live, I thought Tony might have overdrove it, wasn't until we got replays that I saw Kyle make the second move.
HOLY SMOKES!! 18 car is torn up!! Glad Kyle is ok and walked away..hope everybody else is too
Oh yeah, Marcos 6th.
Marcos 6 and JPM 8
@Anon - 100% agreed, NASCAR set this up with Tony and Regan at 'Dega and Brad pretty much highlighted the flaws of this new rule of blocking
That horrible glitter has to go.
Thanks to that bogus debris caution with 15 to go...
that little peice of glitter on his face is driving me nuts
We are so far behind watching the race on tivo but on RB nascar officials were physically putting KB in their truck. I can't wait to see what happened.
wow! smoke doubting himself? feeling guilty? hey smoke, there was no other course you could have taken. young mr busch tried it twice, you gave it to him once and kept your line the second time.
what's up with JJ not knowing where they are in the race..seems to happen to him a lot
LOL Carl "Ok, so, last lap.."
Jimmie looks like he had two black eyes on my high def TV
J.D. you have to tell the press guys to cover this nascar manipulation, someone has to have the guts to take them on and point out how ridiculous this has become...
Can anyone tell if he hit the wall or SAFER barrier?
did jimmie have a bruised right eye or was that something else, like helmet squoosh?
@Vicky- he has to go to the care center
Glad to hear Tony say he didn't like winning like that but hey, how often has KYLE wrecked in the truck series to race!! Karma is a biootch!
IS EVERYBODY OK THO?? hope so
I hated that last FAKE CAUTION to bunch up the cars though..might've been a different outcome if NASCAR left cars the way they were running.
kyle hit the wall. no SAFER there.
@red
it looked like a bruise to me too.
Anon: If you dont know the press, with very few exceptions, is in bed with Nascar, where have you been....
I hope they talk to Kasey Kane about his running into the 18 car.
WOO HOO!!! What a race!! Congrad Tony!!
Great broadcast! I really wish TNT could broadcast the rest of the races. ESPU really has their work cut out for them.
Ironically the movie on after this is Payback.
ppl will complain about that debris caution, but had it been those 4 cars by themselves for the finish people would gripe then too.
cept me. those were the 4 best cars, fortunately they faught it out for themselves but jeez. thats plate racing for you.
Kyle has to go to the Infield Medical Center. It's mandatory.
Listening to Ralph - can you imagine how this would sound if JP was calling it
Ralph says KB has "declined to comment on the finish"
OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I did not know Kyle got him from Kasey AND the second car.
WOW...and Kyle walked away thanks to the safety measures.
Still..I am blaming the fake "caution" that even drivers questioned, you know? Cars were spread out.
Kyle declined comment?? How about being a man and being GRATEFUL you WALKED AWAY.
we may not oike you Kyle but we don't want you hurt! Plus he drove earlier today and he's tired...
I am happy Tony won.
Guys, if Kyle did not double block we would have had a great race.
What happens...happens...ya know?
Why are you blaming that yellow? the running order didnt change because of that yellow..this wouldve happened regardless
To recap tonite, WO coverage was great. PxP team was super with great chemistry. Camera work and direction was super. Especially liked the vertical position crawl during comm spots. A little sloppy at the finish but there was a lot going on. Lack of pit reporters was annoying. Weber was not missed.
Wish that TNT could finish out the season.
wicked, no it wouldnt have. its not a given anyways. 10 lap tires vs 36 lap tires changes the way the race unfolds in regards to handling.
kyle did what he felt he had to do. its plate racing. this is what you get.
SPEED stuff is at regular time tomorrow. SPEED Report at 7PM, Victory Lane at 8 and Wind Tunnel at 9 with Dave Despain.
Have a great night and thanks so much for taking the time to stop by tonight!!
nascar didn't throw the yellow to group them up..they threw the yellow because they were afraid the tires could not make it.... that's the real story here..larry mac had it right..doesn't bode well for indy
jd, young mr busch's double block didn't ruin the race for me. it was a great race and a solid broadcast by tnt. neat that twitter has become part of how some of us experience the race broadcast.
but i sure would like a quick note to let us know that all drivers are ok after all that . . .
indy will be fine. they tested there twice with tires that could go 40-50 laps and more.
I am surprised there are not safer walls EVERYWHERE on these tracks...Kyle hit the concrete wall and walked away. amazing
Dear FOX, SPEED and ESPN..take note of this Wide Open coverage and how popular it is. if we the fans get double file restarts then we ALSO want side by side
