Live Blogging The Sprint Cup Series From Bristol, TN (ESPN - 6:30PM ET)

The track is very happy that the Saturday night race is a sellout. One hundred and sixty thousand NASCAR fans are going to be making some noise as the Sprint Cup Series action unfolds.

ESPN has a one-hour pre-race version of NASCAR Countdown scheduled at 6:30PM. Allen Bestwick will be in the Infield Pit Studio with Rusty Wallace and Brad Daugherty. These programs have proven to be hit-or-miss this season. Bestwick has the goods to define priorities and host good conversations, but often the production team has other ideas.

This week, the drivers were asked by the speedway to pick a song that will be used during driver intros. Click here to see the full list courtesy of our friend and veteran reporter Dustin Long. Unfortunately, ESPN will not be able to show this because the network has to pay rights fees every time popular music is used on national TV.

Once the action gets underway it will be Jerry Punch calling the play-by-play. Friday night was rough for Punch who struggled with everything from accidents to updating teams outside the top five. This event is extremely fast-paced and the challenge for the on-air TV team never ends. Even under caution, there is a lot of information that fans are looking forward to having updated.

Dale Jarrett and Andy Petree will once again be alongside of Punch. These two have been polite and enjoyable, but tonight face a new challenge. Once Punch fades, it will be Jarrett who slides over into calling the race while Petree will provide the strategy updates.

It is impossible to insert Tim Brewer from the Tech Garage full-screen under green flag racing because the laps are so quick. Look for ESPN to present Brewer in a two video box effect. Hopefully, he will be put in the smaller size box so fans can continue to enjoy the action while Brewer talks tech.

The aerial views and high camera shots of this track at night are spectacular. On Friday night, ESPN chose to bypass the opportunity to use this video as bumpers into and out of commercial break. Perhaps, seeing as this event is a sellout, TV viewers will get to see one of the most unique sports venues in the nation tonight for more than just a couple of seconds.

The excessive use of in-car cameras live during the race ruined the Friday night Nationwide Series telecast. Bristol is so steeply banked and the laps are so fast that live in-cars just jar the TV viewer and completely lose any perspective that had been established. Where the in-cars have a value is on replays, especially with the use of the audio recorded during incidents. See if there is a shift tonight.

"Headlights, not tailpipes" was the motto used by the TV networks that have telecast racing from BMS over the years. The ultimate challenge is to continue to cut cameras and stay ahead of the action. TV viewers should be seeing the front of the cars coming at them, not the rear ends of the cars racing away.

There is no doubt that tempers may be tight tonight, especially with drivers who are forced out of the race due to incidents on the track. The ESPN pit reporting team of Jamie Little, Shannon Spake, Vince Welch and Dave Burns will be right in the middle of the action.

There is tremendous potential tonight for an outstanding TV broadcast. The fans, the track and the teams are all in place. It would be a great time for ESPN to deliver a telecast that could set the network up for the Chase for the Championship to come.

This post will serve to host your comments on the ESPN Sprint Cup Series telecast from Bristol, TN. To add your TV-related opinion, just click on the comments button below. This is a family-friendly website, please keep that in mind when posting.

Thanks for taking time out of your Saturday night to join us at The Daly Planet.

ITS BRISTOL BABY!!!! I HOPE ESPN HAS A GREAT BROADCAST TONIGHT! NO RAIN, AND A MOMENTUM IN THE RATINGS MEANS BIG THINGS HOPEFULLY. WE SHALL SEE, HOPE EVERYONE ENJOYS THE RACE TONIGHT THIS SHOULD BE LOTS OF FUN!!!! WOOOOO

GO JR 88 ALL THE WAY!

Daly Planet Editor said...

Jonathan, lower case type please. Hopefully, it will be a TV race to remember.

TexasRaceLady said...

Please, Jonathan, you're shouting.

hotaru-raganbaby_6 said...

Jonathan must be really excited!

Hoping for a NW/Cup sweep from David! :)

David said...

Not liking this background opening intro music. A nice montage of Bristol memories would have been a great start IMO.

Im off to a great start LOL.

Haus14 said...

I think Jonathan just thought he was Kenny Wallace.

Charlie said...

I will be watching the Packers and recording this race.
I wonder if any of the pit crew will ask Gordon about his back.

kbaskins said...

@ hotaru

I'd rather it be Carl, but I'll settle for anyone from RFR. :-)

WEAK! No heels and she didn't even make it up a single groove!

Krista is putting all these girls to shame

Haus14 said...

Wow, Jamie said the same thing she said last night. Sounds like this is going to be a humdinger.

David said...

Since we are rooting for guys

Terry!!!!! But since they will probably hit the trailer by lap 100, Shrubby or Smoke would be great!

Dave in OKC said...

I hope Rusty shared some of his 5-Hour Energy with Dr. Punch.

David said...

Dave, I read that about DOQ, either Danny has something lined up or something is being left out. Sucks because they are what, 18th in points? Take the Cup guys out and they are 12th or so.

Sophia said...

ok turned off PRN until later (MRN is my pref)

When did Rusty get so loud/fast/animated. It's like he's trying to talk more than Kenny? Maybe I forgot this or is he just hyped up on coffee tonight? I know he loves Bristol.

Dave in OKC said...

David, I hope DOQ has something up his sleeve.

My final NNS comment - The Kimberly Clark sponsorship is leaving the 27 at the end of the year and moving to Marcos Ambrose's Cup ride.

David said...

Sophia, thats Rusty. Always has been. LOVES to talk.

David said...

Saw that too Dave. I find it interesting. Hate that Baker-Curb now has to find a sponsor. This group was talking about 4 cars last year before Daytona, now struggling to finance a single car. Always thought highly of that organization back from the BrewCo days. Shame to see them lose the sponsor, but good for Marcos

hotaru-raganbaby_6 said...

Yeah, but I'm supportive of my David 'baby' :D

Just remembered 'bout the Jaguars game and if my allergies start bothering me, I may have to take meds (that make me DROWZY, hence I miss the race).

Hey, the last two times I did that, Carl Edwards won. Let's hope it's David! :)

Allergies and Bristol races (both of them)- they go together for me.

Daly Planet Editor said...

This prerace show has the feel of NASCAR Now. Lots of pre-production and packaged pieces.

PammH said...

And I remember JD, you mentioned last nite's was so good. I missed it too-darn.

David said...

You think Jack feels a little insulted to hear Mark talk about Rick's #5 team like that. Even when he was at Ginn and DEI he sounded tons happier than he did over at Roush.

I know they act civilized when cameras are on but me thinks hard feelings still lie...

David said...

RD may have a couple clowns shouting their opinions as facts, but at least they have a solid balance between interviews and pre-produced pieces. ESPN does a good job with these, but I hope this isn't the bulk of their pre-race. Off the cuff interviews are invaluable to me.

MtnVwJay said...

Link to song list not working on your website

glenc1 said...

David, as a fan of drivers from Roush long gone, I have to believe Jack is hurt by Mark's comments. Yes, Jack has feelings, lol. He expressed disappointment after Jeff Burton left, so I know he has it in him. Perhaps he & Mark have a relationship where they've talked it all out. For Mark's part; he's admitted he's changed his attitude, maybe it was Rick who helped change it. But Mark used to talk about Jimmy Fennig like he was the greatest in history. And then he talked about Pat Tryson the same way. And now it's Alan G....so maybe that's just Mark.

David said...

Link works for me.

LOL @ Scott Wimmer's choice! Knight Rider theme! HAHAHA, good to see MMM back at the track.

David said...

Glen, I guess that extra year Jack got out of Mark, and seeing Mark was visibly unhappy with it, set the tone for me. He did run a NW car for them the next year and I'm positive they have to still be close friends since Mark built that organization on his back for close to a decade. Jack has feelings I totally believe that! LOL, just ask him about Toyota!

Walter said...

Mr Editor -
JP again? Oooooh ...I think I'll channel Hal Hamrick, Bill Fleming and Chris Economaki (remember them?) ...no MRN, so it will be up to PRN to chase the racing action and I expect they'll do a credible job

Daly Planet Editor said...

Think I have seen this feature before....

Daly Planet Editor said...

Jay, I sent you a new link. Check your email.

Anonymous said...

which is worse prn or espn? ughhh!!!

Daly Planet Editor said...

The short 30 min pre-race show really worked last night. Rusty, Brad and AB got the TV viewers fired up...and then came Punch and company.

PammH said...

Wow! Sounds like driver intros were pretty good! (reading on Twitter) Too bad we missed them..:(

Dave in OKC said...

Not that they'll be there longer than 3 or 4 laps, but would it hurt to mention Scott Speed and Dave Blaney starting in Row 2?

Glenn said...

Well I couldn't take it anymore, made the switch to PRN.
They have had good discussions, a LOT of great driver comments, even let us hear Mikey introduce himself. "As good as I once was"
What they're broadcasting is what makes me want to be there.
Fun and they are getting the action as it's happening. I just hope it continues through the broadcast.

Vicky D said...

We still like Brad D a lot his enthusiasm is terrific. This pre-race show is repeating segments from the previous week on NN. AB is setting up the race pretty good but Rusty's volume needs to go down a notch or two!

Sophia said...

anon

I forgot how annoying PRN is until I tried their pre race. Some guy on there has the most annoying voice and thinks he is a comedian.

PRN= the ESPN of NASCAR RADIO :(

MRN guys rule!

David said...

Wow, Will Power and Nelson Philippe hurt today in practice

Sophia said...

re: PRN I turned them off long ago when they appeared to be taking PHONE CALLS???

so between phone, and this blog, brownies and tv...PRN is muted again until I get annoyed with TV. within few laps of camera work after GF I can GUARANTEE!!

Dang Will Power broke two vertabraes (didn't hear which ones!) and Nelson concussion. Need to find link.

Have they already had the driver intros with the music? We just turned the pre-race show and just see the 3 guys here.

Nelson Phillipe broken left foot and W Power lower back broken.

SCARY wrecks in OW this season. :(

wickedj said...

i think i see Mikey Waltrips daughter in the back

Also, the huge flag is AWESOME, they do it at Norwalk (aka Summit Raceway Park) when i go for Night Under Fire and it takes up both lanes and probably 1/4 of the track

Steve L. said...

Man, so much reading to catch up on everything going on today!
Blogs, twitter, on and on. I'm missing the actual tv coverage..
Whew!

wickedj said...

@david: Dont forget "Local singing sensations"

PammH said...

Great overhead shots of the track during the anthem!!

TexasRaceLady said...

Kbaskins,

I'll second that statement. Makes you wonder why "professionals" can't sing it if the kids can.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Now, that was an anthem!

Anonymous said...

I know they're just kids, but that rendition of the National Anthem is just horrible.

Vicky D said...

Wickedj - yeah those "local singing sensations" are always terrible.

Sophia said...

Well this is JUST a quibble but PLEASE keep the camera on the jets a bit longer! I love it and would rather see another second of that then Tony getting in his car..or anybody else. Military deserves another second dontcha think?

The rest of the night. well, we KNOW how that's gonna go. Just read your shampoo bottles. Lather. Rinse. Repeat. :)

They're trying to set a karaoke world record at Bristol. That's why they're singing in the background.

ESPN shows none of them. BOOOOO

Daly Planet Editor said...

ASCAR and BMI, the music unions, charge high fees for use of current popular music on TV.

If it plays in the background while something else is going on, no problem. If it is played while the driver intros are happening, you can count on big bucks being charged to ESPN.

Nice idea by the track, I think it will be on youtube shortly.

Commercial lap 22? Any takers?

David said...

Haus14 said...

JD, is that so they control how and when their songs are used? It seems to me that the publicity would help sell songs...especially now that you can purchase songs individually on itunes.

Vicky D said...

Looks like Blaney is getting ready to park it.

Dot said...

@ SalB, my thoughts too.

Daly Planet Editor said...

None of the ESPN guys would touch the start and park issue with Blaney.

Weak....

SalB said...

Again with the in car!? JD, are they doing it just to spite us, or are they really that stupid?

wickedj said...

Steve: lap 13 :P

Vicky D said...

JD - these guys didn't learn their lesson from last night - they still aren't looking out the window.

red said...

and there's our first "sailing into the corner" cliche, following the #20 wall hit.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Haus, it is a multi-billion dollar business. No chance of just getting an exception for a one time NASCAR race.

You may remember it cost ESPN and TNT hundreds of thousands of dollars to get theme songs for their NASCAR coverage.

The music unions are rough.

Vicky, so far in car cams, missing the action and Punch already lost.

Blaney and several other start and park cars qualified up front. They are an issue and ESPN was in silence...afraid to talk about the real issue.

Just because they talk about someone, do they have to have a close up of that car? We don't need to see close shots while mentioning them!

Apparently, passes will only be shown from in car cameras. Or, maybe 50% of the race, judging from the first 30 laps.

red said...

steve l: if you're referring to that extended discussion of the #24 car, it may have been b/c we were using the #99 "aflac in-car camera" as noted on the bottom left of the screen.

darbar said...

Hi Everyone. Well, the comment by Edwards just backs up what I've been complaining about all season. He's said in pre-race he's not going to be able to race hard so as not to mess up his quest for the Chase. I'm tired of hearing guys like Hammond and Larry Mac say that the fans are wrong about their comments that drivers don't race hard and race to win--that they only points race. Montoya is another prime example. He's totally admitted that he's finally learned how to race in Nascar, which is to take your time, don't be aggressive and then just race hard enough for points.

So this is why, Planeteers, that ratings are down and behinds are not in the seats. Why spend good time to see guys points race and why spend good money for tickets for boring racing?

wickedj said...

JD - how come we dont have the brake cam anymore? that was cool

Sophia said...

blaney hits Logano and Blaney out and Joey 13 laps down? wow

Like I was saying, this is the new Bristol and I think talking about the old days is off base.

If you want some ticker, just jump over to ESPN2.

@wickedj: thanks. i've taken to watching the leaderboard on nascar.com for lap times as well as standings.

dr punch seems lost: reciting car numbers and driver names and giving us historical tidbits as to who's won this race when. not so much PxP, tho'.

The director is having a tough night. No rhythm, lots of tailpipes. Late on the cutting.

Remember how the Mods were always coming AT you on weds?

Yes Jerry, you already told us Mark Martin last won here 11 years ago. The downward spiral has begun. He is running out of stats to call & half my car number bingo board is filled.

ESPN does the ticker at intervals and ESPN2 does it during the whole thing.

@JD--some of my Tweeter buddies are screaming for RaceBuddy :(
