Live Blogging Wednesday Night's NASCAR Doubleheader on SPEED

This should be a blast. First of all the Whelen Modifieds are the quickest things the Bristol Motor Speedway has ever seen. Mike Joy and Dick Berggren will call the action at 7PM for this race special.

The race was actually run at 6PM, so please let us all enjoy it as it unfolds on TV. This is a very different style of racing than most NASCAR fans have seen, so hopefully we can enjoy it as it happens on SPEED.

Krista Voda is up next with The Setup. This pre-race show for the Camping World Truck Series will focus on Ron Hornaday. One other story Voda will be reporting is an update on racing veteran Johnny Benson, injured in a Supermodified wreck a while back. Benson is in Bristol and will appear on the show.

Rick Allen, Phil Parsons and Michael Waltrip are next with the CWTS race. This trio has learned to work well together, especially when Waltrip leaves his sponsor-driven agenda back in his motorcoach. Allen can certainly crank up the excitement and this racetrack is the perfect place for that.

The truck field is sometimes a bit thin, but this week all different kinds of drivers have entered for the Wednesday race. It should be a very different challenge for Hornaday once the green flag falls.

This post will serve to host your comments on the NASCAR doubleheader tonight on SPEED. To add your TV-related comment, just click on the comments button below. This is a family-friendly website, please keep that in mind when posting. Thanks for taking the time to stop by The Daly Planet.

Hey all, what an action packed day!

WickedJ said...

Mike Joy! Dr Dick! I've died and gone to broadcasting heaven

WickedJ said...

bending the rules to let some big names in, thats something a local promoter would do..good on NASCAR

Daly Planet Editor said...

hey, no spoilers here on the Mods please!

WickedJ said...

What spoilers? Mike Joy just said it on TV

Vicky D said...

Go Teddy!

The Loose Wheel said...

WHOOOOOO!!!!!! NO RAIN!!

WickedJ said...

Wow..3 G's...can you tell Mike Joy loves him some short track modified racing?

The Loose Wheel said...

whats the use of talking about a doubleheader without a spoiler or two? lol

Daly Planet Editor said...

This race is TD, started at 6PM and is almost over in real life.

Just trying to keep the spoilers away.

Patrick said...

Really cool that we're seeing this as the opening act to the trucks. And really cool that JD has open this up for us!
Wicked fast!

The Loose Wheel said...

oh, that sucks its on TD

WickedJ said...

Mike Joy said 39 cars showed for 36 spots but qualifying got rained out so NASCAR granted an exception and let all 39 cars start

Daly Planet Editor said...

That was great, wish we had seen some wideshots on the start.

What is up with all these tight shots this season? Like a plague!

The Loose Wheel said...

I heard 40 were there

Patrick said...

We can talk about the action as its broadcast, though. Right?

So much for the big 4-peat promotion!

Daly Planet Editor said...

SPEED was trying to get this race on TV with very little funding so they chose this route. I appreciate that it made TV at all.

These guys don't drive tow trucks, don't pimp anyone's car and don't chase stolen autos so it is amazing it made it through to TV.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Patrick...absolutely! What we like to do here is watch TV!

Vicky D said...

And they showed the trucks lined up for the race later. Good calls by Mike Joy & Dick Berggren.

Patrick said...

That's what I thought. Sucks to be Newman about now. I expect a lot of simple explanations since most viewers haven't seen this type of racer.

WickedJ said...

TD or not, its on TV...and so far its good racing

Daly Planet Editor said...

Man, that is one in-car camera I love!

J_Fellenbaum said...

I'm not gonna complain much about the broadcast at all....Cool enough that they are on TV at all. Don't know how they'll race at Bristol..but they'll be fast!

Go Donny Lia!

The Loose Wheel said...

Like I said JD, done properly its a BEAUTIFUL tool.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Faster than trucks, Nationwide or Cup.

Anonymous said...

After watching this for a few laps 2 things come to mind. Why can't we get to see more of this & incredible with no "bells, whistles or rodents" we get racing. Hint hint 4 letters

Patrick said...

For some perspective, fastest qualifier in the trucks was 122.217 mph. The were showing the leaders speed at 119, which was as fast as 20th.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Hope NASCAR shifts more regional racing to the same weekends and tracks as the big three. I know its a logistics hassle, but that is the right thing to do.

The Loose Wheel said...

Patrick on new tires they are WAYYY faster than the Cup cars. Tons of testing here to slow them down. They tested wayyy under Newman's Cup track record

Patrick said...

and qualifying at a track like this can be 5 mph faster than a clean run by the leader in actual race conditions.

glenc1 said...

they look good at Bristol, wow. Cast of thousands, lol....but they're smart enough to be flexible....wow, we can see the cars in packs! I'm loving Dr Dick & Mike...and Dillner is in his element.

Patrick said...

David,
I should have emphasized the new tires in qualifying versus these guys on used and in traffic. I wasn't trying to imply that anyone else was faster. I was amazed how fast they were 15-20 (maybe more)laps into a run.

The Loose Wheel said...

Yeah, your 2nd post indicated that. Its all good.

These are interesting. Wish they would get the Loudon race on TV too!

This is a series thats had a rough year with the economy and a reduced schedule so hopefully a race like this will be a shot in the arm for them

Anonymous said...

So I doubt we could get Mike & Dr Dick to stay for the trucks & MW to take a nap tonight?

Anonymous said...

man Mike Joy is just great. having a blast listening to him. I feel like all my problems are solved.

The Loose Wheel said...

good use of split and replay. best of both worlds

The Loose Wheel said...

is that a cooler in the 17? lol

Charlie said...

You really wouldn't know there is over 30 cars on this small track.

Patrick said...

What are their speeds as they approach lap 75? That would be telling as to how fast they are really going.
p.s., top qualifier in trucks 122, fastest DNQ 116. Huge disparity.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Listening to Mike really puts something we have been struggling with recently in a pretty good perspective.....

Patrick said...

JD,
That would be known as "passion"

The Loose Wheel said...

the issue we have griped about with a certain 4 letter network?

Anonymous said...

very simple broadcast too.

Newracefan said...

Can someone who knows explain. Do the cars get their positions back after pitting? I am assuming yes or Dilner wouldn't be getting an interview. I'm having fun by the way, never saw a modified race before.

Steve L. said...

Man, so good to hear Mike's voice on here. Dr. Dick too!
Pictures are good too. I love this!

The Loose Wheel said...

I like a bumper cam that gives you perspective

Daly Planet Editor said...

In the old days, when you showed tailpipes it meant the director was lazy and let the cars go past.

You always wanted to be ahead of the laps and never let the rear ends of the car be shown.

You can see this director is just a beat late so far.

WickedJ said...

Anyone know what the weather is doing at the track right now?

Anonymous said...

This is just good racing being simply shown. No nonsense. Awesome.

Vicky D said...

JD, is this a points race for the modifieds?

Karen said...

I've never seen the modifieds race either. Pretty darn cool. Who's in the booth with Mike and Dr. Dirt?

The Loose Wheel said...

yeah its a point race. think they have an 18 race schedule this year

Charlie said...

My quick weather thing says - Cloudy, 75°

The Loose Wheel said...

Karen, Geoff Bodine

Patrick said...

Geoff Bodine was in the booth earlier. Haven't heard him in last few minutes.

glenc1 said...

I swear that one of the networks did a feature on Bowman Gray a few years ago...talking about how successful they were amongst so many short tracks that went under. Anyone remember who made that?

Daly Planet Editor said...

The one and only Geoffrey Bodine. You may remember him flipping his truck down the Daytona dogleg.

The Loose Wheel said...

I actually thought ESPN might have done that piece on Bowman-Gray. Can you believe Cup cars raced at BG?!

WickedJ said...

JD -Scariest wreck..since Craven at 'Dega in the 90s

Patrick said...

I know Ted Christopher attempted to qualify for the Cup race in New Hampshire earlier this year, but someone else should've given him a ride in the NW race that same weekend. Will he be in a truck when they go back to NH?

glenc1 said...

the one thing they can't recreate is the noise. Mods are SO loud...I'm not a fan of 'crank it up', but I wonder if you could even come close.

Patrick said...

I don't recognize that tone Dr. Dirt is using there. I think they used to call that "excitement"?

Patrick said...

Now Joy getting into the fray with some genuine excitement. Lovin' this!

WickedJ said...

I got a dollar says this is the best racing of the week

The Loose Wheel said...

Man, a nice zoom out would be nice. Need a wideshot for some perspective.

Maybe the stands are ugly and they aren't wanting to show it?

Daly Planet Editor said...

glen, the Mods were so loud the reporters were freaking out.

These guys really haul the mail. How can a short Mod race with Mike Joy be more exciting than Cup stars at Watkins Glen with JP?

Amazing.

Patrick said...

Really good use of the double screen. Showing two battles concurrently.

Newracefan said...

This a huge reminder of why I love Mike Joy

Daly Planet Editor said...

Remember when Lia won that truck race by knocking everyone out of the way? Now you know where he learned that!

The Loose Wheel said...

LOL, JD that was a fun race to watch though. Not like Starr didn't knock guys out of the way to get up to the lead himself anyways...

Kinda thought Lia got a raw deal in Trucks

Vicky D said...

JD - don't remind us of Lia knocking our David Starr out of the way to win that truck race!

Daly Planet Editor said...

Well, now we know who payed the bill for this one!

Anonymous said...

One good thing about tape delayed races - skip over the delay for rain!

Patrick said...

Great pics at the finish. Stationary view of the start/finish line while everyone crosses. See, ESPN? It won't take but a few seconds to show the entire finish.

Patrick said...

and the drop-down graphic is tons better than flying heads.

glenc1 said...

I hadn't thought about the noise at Bristol, being in the bowl. Must be deafening...

glad they were able to bring Bodine in for a bit.

David, didn't SPEED used to show the Loudon mod race? Maybe I'm thinking of the old BGNN. I just remember them miking Jeff Fuller on a restart....

Anonymous said...

@Patrick - yup to what you said & the PxP guy was fully involved, excited & we got a top 10 finish drop down! What a good warm up for trucks!
I would definately watch Mods if they are on again !

The Loose Wheel said...

glen, they might have before. Havent recalled seeing one in a really long time though. These types of broadcasts would be huge for this series though. maybe do 4 or 5 races even on tape delay would help a ton I think

Daly Planet Editor said...

wow, Maynard Troyer. Haven't thought of that name in forever!

Dave in OKC said...

The old TNN used to carry the BGNN races at New Hampshire. I remember the 1998 race very well - Ricky Craven, then recovering from injury (and '91 Champion), was in the booth doing color.

Happy to see a Mod race on TV. Wish we could see more of this.

TexasRaceLady said...

Fantastic mod race. Loved hearing the passion in the voices of Mike Joy and Dr. Dirt.

As wickedj said -- I've died and gone to broadcast heaven.

WickedJ said...

Does Rick have a mullet?

Newracefan said...

Wick- was thinking the same thing. Yeah Schrader!!!!!!!!!!!!

Patrick said...

I realize that its gotta be easier to broadcast on tape delay, but there are just some fundamentals that our current Cup & NW broadcaster could learn from. It's only a one hour course. We saw the racing, the battles, limited in-car cameras, no pre-produced BS (except to fill the rain delay which was concise and relevant), no made-up story lines and a full finishing order across the line with a drop down list that we can read. Good job Speed. I would bet that Mike and Dick would love to call this action for their entire schedule (or at least the part that's after the Fox half).

Anonymous said...

Well, the Modified race was fantastic as expected. That series has the best racing, but little $. Mike Joy was refreshing to listen to, a play-by-play announcer that called the action & sounded excited! A+++++ With the double video boxes showing 2 battles at the same time & watching every car cross the finish line with the drop-down results. If Speed could do this with a minimal budget, why can't the 'worldwide leader' do it?

Great job Speed!

Anonymous said...

Joy lost during last laps..thought12 to go when only 2 remained!!!

Daly Planet Editor said...

You guys know Schrader is in the truck race tonight right?

Does anyone read my columns! hehe..

Dave in OKC said...

Watching the last ten laps of the Modified race, my main thoight was "This is how a race is SUPPOSED to be broadcast."

glenc1 said...

Troyer Machine is still around. I grew up nearby.

There's a free admission dirt mod race at Black Rock on friday...very tempting...Dilner ran a dirt mod there a few years back in a car wayyyyyyyyyy too small for him, thought it was very sporting of him.

The Loose Wheel said...

There were spotty moments, Joy not knowing what happened on the restart until after the Dillner report and replay was a tough spot but all-in-all it was a genuine broadcast which makes mistakes easier to swallow.

Awesome piece on Rick Ren!!!! ESPN take note!

An Amy East spotting, can I say I miss her? lol

WickedJ said...

i thought King won 10 in a row...

Patrick said...

Did I see a road course in Portland (2000) during that Rick Ren piece? I thought NASCAR was wanting to be in the NE. Why not there? I know there are mixed feelings about road courses, but if you're going to run them, I think you should have more than 2 to make better use of a single-purpose vehicle and then have 1 in the chase.
ducks and runs for cover.

The Loose Wheel said...

Patrick, yes the trucks did run at Portland. I think around 1999 or 2000 they had 3 or 4 road courses on the schedule.

It would make as much sense as running at the Glen at least.

Technically the car isn't supposed to be "specialty" but in this day and age with big budget race teams, they are and thats a great point.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Man, the trucks used to run wild places. Didn't they run Heartland Park in Topeka for a while?

I would love to see the run some shorter and smaller tracks.

The Loose Wheel said...

2 years JD. I was on race-reference a few weeks back looking at their mix when we were talking about getting them back to smaller racetracks. See the highlights from the late 90's though? the beating and banging of the small tracks with the occasional big track show made this series special.

Patrick said...

Maybe a road course in Portland is too close to the road course in Sonoma (even though they look quite different). In this economy, they won't find anyone willing to build a track and retrofitting stands/barriers could be a quick/easy entry point.

Anyway, back to tonight: Does anyone think Mikey in under-utilized? I think he is given way too much air time and sponsor-speaks beyond ridiculous. I can't quite put my finger on what is so annoying about him to me. He's not as goofy as Rutledge, but it's almost like he's trying to amuse his daughter that may be watching daddy on TV. Does that make sense?

Modman75 said...

As a born modified fan who worked as a crew chief on the Mod tour for 12+ years, this was AWESOME!! Issues kept me away from the track this weekend, but my heart was in the place that I always knew the mods belonged. It actually brought a tear to my eye to see the green flag fly @ Bristol over the cars that I love so much. The broadcast crew was great tonight. Dick and mike were great, and I know it was a dream come tryue for Bob to be working pit lane for a mod race from Bristol. I remember when Bob and his brother would troop over from Long Island to cover the tour for the station they were working for at the time. They were the only "news" people working to get modified highlights out there to the national outlets. Knowing how hard Bob worked, it is pretty cook to see him be a part of this.
If you think this race was good, you need to see these guys at a place they normally run. If they televised a race from Stafford or NHIS, you'd be standing and shouting in your living room.

Soory this is so long, but I'm just so happy about how today's race turned out.

Vicky D said...

Anon at 8:12 - yes I picked up on that too unless the video got messed up someway.

WickedJ said...

Aaaannd i lost SPEED, please tell me im not the only one

Daly Planet Editor said...

You know, Krista Voda is freaking fearless on TV!

The Loose Wheel said...

Still solid here. just saw JB's piece and interview

Modman75 said...

see, so excited I can't spell for Sh*t LOL

WickedJ said...

Thats odd, i lost SPEED but no other channels....

stupid directv

Vicky D said...

Not happy to see the interviews for the truck races and the second driver they interview is a cup driver.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Thanks for stopping by Modman. I was just thinking about sitting in at Stafford shooting the breeze with the guys after a race. That was a blast to watch.

Newracefan said...

According to Nascar trucks on Twitter Schrader to the back for missing the drivers meeting. Ahh Kenny your old enough to know better.

It was great to see JB anyone else having a problem getting use to the new glasses?

Anonymous said...

Talk about dancing backwards in high heels!
Now lets see Ray put on those heels & climb that track LOL

glenc1 said...

Modman, I wish there were more of you.

Okay, I don't want to hear another word about Manske's high heels, lol. I admire Krista's skill, she turned around & everything.

Nice piece & interview with Johnny.

WickedJ said...

stupid weather, no sooner do i complain does it start to storm

*shakes fist*

Anonymous said...

Wow - can't believe Krista made it up the track in those heels!!!

Patrick said...

You shouldn't apologize for being long Modman. That was a great comment. I am glad you shared that insight. Bob is quite the proponent for the mod series. His website isn't the best asthetically, but its full of short track news.

Anonymous said...

Modman - I used to go to the Pennsylvania 500 every year with my Dad. Last year we decided to stop going, it was way too expensive, pretty bad view & pretty bad racing. We went to watch the Mods at Riverhead instead. The racing & view of the track was fantastic. More racing, more excitement, 25% of the cost & travel. We can't wait for next year.

WickedJ said...

long prayer is long

The Loose Wheel said...

great post modman. Like I said, Id LOVE to see the mods on tv for NHIS. You hear so many guys talk about how great a race that is to watch yet no one has picked it up for TV. If only...

Im used to seeing JB in glasses ever since I started watching. It was when he had the lasik that it threw me off.

Anonymous said...

I forgot about Hermie!!!! The pride of Emporia Virginia!

Newracefan said...

Don't think I've ever seen Hermie look so serious.

Dave in OKC said...

I barely recognized Hermie.

Modman75 said...

Tell ya what... any person who has ever got excited watching a cup race @ Bristol would lose their minds watching a mod race from Riverhead. Riverhead makes Bristol look like a superspeedway... a place where you put nerf bars on the right side that stick out a little further so you can bounce it off the fence coming off turn 4.

Would love to see these guys get even a little more TV time.

Again, GREAT job to Speed w/ the broadcast!

Daly Planet Editor said...

Don't forget about Max Papis in the Geico special.

glenc1 said...

I'm with you on JB....he looked funny to me without the glasses.
.
That may have been the longest invocation I've ever heard. Good, but long, lol

PammH said...

Nice anthem. Sound problems on TV. I switched to Sirius. Did they last? Great to see Hermie & his little girl-also JB! And Krista is just the bestest ever!!!

red said...

hey gang! had to miss the mods but refused to miss the trucks at bristol!

modman: what a terrific, heartfelt post and what a true pleasure to read. your passion for your cars comes thru strong and clear!

voda in heels walking up the banking was astounding! it takes a very special woman to be willing to look like a total fool if she had fallen! i dare any guy to try that maneuver!

Dave in OKC said...

Given the depth of the field tonight, will we see fewer S&Ps than usual?

glenc1 said...

funny thing...I heard a helicopter at the Glen a few weeks ago, and looked up. I said to my friend, 'that's the money we could be saving by using Geico'. It was a banner with the dollar bills & the eyes. Their ads may be annoying but they're memorable.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Pretty good article on Krista a while back in Skin Diving Magazine or something like that.

She is a real athlete and got into diving a while back. Pretty good person all the way around.

Batchief, did you hear that? I need some credit!

Patrick said...

Lemmy?

Vicky D said...

There were even 3 trucks that didn't make the race tonight. Johnny looked a little washed out I thought.

Modman75 said...

Thanks for your nice words. The guys you saw on TV tonight are just as passionate about that series as I am. 99.9% of the guys there tonight are there on their own dime. All used vacation time and most payed their own way down their from the Northeast. The car owners in tha series can't afford salaries so it is a love of that series that keeps it running each week. Guys like Bob Dilner, Mike Joy and Dick Bergren all have done the same and understand this dedication and did a great job in showcasing this series.

Sophia said...

wah! Totally forgot about the early race. Would've LOVED Mike Joy and Dr. Dick's voices in the booth..but dinner got delayed..computers off and I plumb forgot

see, JD had the details but....short term memory and other distractions.

I'm just HAPPY to read HAPPY comments...how pitiful is that to type after the &^%$^#& BSPN junk.

Thundering here and muggy as all get out...can't imagine living in New Orleans where its muggy like this and worse all the time. Hope it's ok in Bristol

Patrick said...

Speaking of 'paying their own way', there was a good interview with Brian Keselowski on Pit Pass USA this week.

Charlie said...

Why do they play that guitar riff in the back ground.

Anonymous said...

Somebody should just name Mike Joy as the voice for Nascar Sprint Cup---you want the package--you get Mike Joy---Fox/TNT/ESPN....What a difference in energy...

Patrick said...

Anon @ 8:46

You just did and I second that nomination.

Anonymous said...

what is that background music?

weird

Newracefan said...

I'm in too, I was thinking it earlier but we all know how ESPN is, plus the guy might want some time off. Mike Joy is the man!

Sophia said...

SPEED so needs to LOSE that horrible guitar screeching. please

Daly Planet Editor said...

Gee, nice replay effect there SPEED. Are we going to see that all night?

Daly Planet Editor said...

Still freaky to see two grooves at Bristol running at speed on TV.

Vicky D said...

Good looking stickers on Hermie's truck!

Patrick said...

8 laps, 4 miles and #47-Edwards already parking. Ticker didn't even go by twice.

Newracefan said...

Hey JD Twitter is saying that NN at the Whitehouse will reair at 1am

Patrick said...

#121-Tucker & #08-Miller parking, too.

red said...

hey jd? if 2 lanes are good at bristol, are THREE great? amazing to see this!

J_Fellenbaum said...

And Norm, he's going to get parked for going to slow...

The Loose Wheel said...

This was the whole idea behind redoing Bristol.

Found it interesting to hear Biffle say on his radio show that he hates this "New" Bristol.

Remember the Nationwide race here 2 years ago before the tapered spacer? One of the BEST NW races ive EVER seen at BMS

TexasRaceLady said...

I'm liking the broadcast. For some reason, Mikey doesn't seem to be so "over-the-top" --- but then, it's early.

red said...

hey, synchronized wrecking trucks!

@david: i have enjoyed the "new" bristol immensely but have felt as if i'm in the (very small) minority. the racing seems to have improved and i don't miss all the bristol wrecks one bit!

Daly Planet Editor said...

Checking on that now NRF. Andy Hall from ESPN told me no earlier in the day.

Respectfully, I had suggested they make room for it....imagine that.

Patrick said...

I'm with Red. I like the multiple grooves and side-by-side racing.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Can I ask a question? Did I miss the replay of the crash?

The Loose Wheel said...

Im with ya red. Asked the question on SIRIUS alot Dave Moody always says he prefers this version too because thats all the old Bristol was, run up on a guy, follow him for 100 laps, hope he bobbles or knock him out of the way to pass. Love the side by side, just wished NASCAR didnt neuter the trucks and NW cars for fear they would be faster than the Cup cars. Unrestricted, this race would be even better IMO.

red said...

is there some rule that all commercial bumpers for nascar have to use music? granted, i have become a master at hitting the mute button!

(by the way, you should have seen the close-captioned typist try desperately to spell "keselowski": took 4 attempts and still got it wrong by typing a double "K" at the start!)

The Loose Wheel said...

Yeah JD. they showed a replay

Daly Planet Editor said...

red, that is so not true. Up to the TV network. Why use music when Cup cars only race 38 times a season and the race is under green?

ESPN is just getting plain old weird these days.

batchief said...

I hear you John and credit is given. State qualifier in track and volleyball. In gymnastics from age 3 to 10.

The Loose Wheel said...

i was always a fan of the old espn bumper music...that and the original nascar on fox theme. aside from that, i agree with everyone else. take the bumper music out in a field and show it some mercy...

Daly Planet Editor said...

Thanks David, must have been a quick one. I only walked to the fridge. Love being on a diet! Ugh.

Daly Planet Editor said...

batchief, not to mention a very good family tree!

Anonymous said...

The Mystic Missile! Nice work by Bob and Joan and the gang.

JD - Its amazing how much people who weren't students of racing in New England love these cars so much the moment they see them.

I hadn't actually looked at the season schedule until tonight, but, and maybe this is the economy - 14 races, 7 at Thompson and Stafford Springs.

So good that they got it on TV. According to Nascar.com, the Sept. race at Loudon will be aired on a month tape delay on SPPED.

The Loose Wheel said...

Yup, only one angle of it.

Im making attempts at a diet...not making a world of progress thus far, got stuck at -8

batchief said...

I have heard that!!

Daly Planet Editor said...

Love that nickname! Hope things can get turned around for the series. I know it is tough right now.

Patrick said...

Which marketing agency was thinkin' with their dipstick when they came up with that concept?

red said...

@jd: thanks, i thought you'd told us earlier it was up to the network but i couldn't remember. it's just so freakin' annoying to have to listen to someone's idea of what "represents" nascar in terms of music! here's an idea: let's allow the cars/trucks to provide the soundtrack instead!

(to be fair, i have the same complaint when it happens on baseball and football broadcasts.)

i don't understand why it's neccesary. what's wrong with letting the announcer's voice be what takes us to commercial?

PammH said...

Exciting race being called on Sirius! How about for y'all??

TexasRaceLady said...

red said "i don't understand why it's neccesary. what's wrong with letting the announcer's voice be what takes us to commercial?"

What? And not have buttons to push and switches to switch? How dare you suggest such a thing. ;-)

red said...

whoops: missed that toss to the pits!

i obviously missed it but how did brian scott break his wrist?

hey! that's the same flag person that i've watched at dover. guess i didn't think the flag offical travelled with the series. . .

TexasRaceLady said...

Speaking on commercials --- as much as I love the Atlanta ad about the lights coming on ---

I was at Atlanta one November when the race finished at midnigt -- under the lights!

Patrick said...

Only 3 S&Ps tonight? Must be a new record low for the year.

red said...

@pammmm: i'm a happy camper with this broadcast so far! coupla minor moments but overall, a solid job for me to this point.

Anonymous said...

back in the day the announcers would talk into a commercial.

If you listen on a scanner at track to production freq (Not sure if this applies to ESPN) the producer counts down to commercial.

The Loose Wheel said...

Brian broke his wrist at Michigan I think...

Been in a cast for a few months now

Patrick said...

Mikey to Macey. See? I told you she was his audience.

PammH said...

ty, red!! I can't handle Mikey, so I'm thrilled to hear u guys are hearing a good race! I'm loving Ray's segment rite now, btw!

red said...

aaarrrggh!! why it is that nascar announcers simply CANNOT get kez's name pronounced correctly? seriously, this is becoming epidemic!

Daly Planet Editor said...

The whole idea is that under yellow, fun music can be used that has some sort of connection to the race.

Under green, the idea is to push the natural sound once the announcers end so fans at home get the roar of the engines into commercial.

I still think that makes a lot of sense....

TexasRaceLady said...

Pamm, Mikey is really good tonight.

Not hogging TV time or talking over the others.

Daly Planet Editor said...

red...they said Brad! :)

The Loose Wheel said...

red, maybe the version you got is wrong....

=p

id imagine if they can get collin's last name right they can get brad's. unless brad doesnt care, then why should we?

=)

Patrick said...

Did they say how 'the kez' went from top 10 to the 20s?

Daly Planet Editor said...

Yea! ESPN2 has added a reair of the NASCAR Now White House one hour special tonight at 1AM ET/10PM PT.

That was nice of them, good move.

Patrick - 'Kez' had an electrical problem.

red said...

@david; actually, i was using the pronounciation that kez's "boss" used . . . and i should have known better! it was a planeteer that corrected me and i've been noticing that several of the guys are getting it right. but not all and certainly not one of the n'wide booth guys in particular!

but it bugs me b/c it's one of those "unforced errors" that speaks to attention to detail -- or lack of it.

kez has been around for a while and in my world (where in-car cams are STILL banned!) it's rude to mispronounce somone's name when you really should know better.

Yea! ESPN2 has added a reair of the NASCAR Now White House one hour special tonight at 1AM ET/10PM PT.

That was nice of them, good move.

not to look a gift horse in the mouth, jd, but the reason some of us missed it in the first place is work and that'll be the same reason i'll miss that 1AM re-air. certainly wish it could be at a more realistic time.

yeah, i know: you have 3 letters for me: dvr.
sigh

@david: pronounciation = kes-LOW-ski. as brad says: "the middle 'e' is silent!"

The Loose Wheel said...

hrm. I fail at life then.

Vicky D said...

Red, I heard Brad on one of the shows explaining the pronunciation of his name - silent "e". I went through a lot of my life with a name that people couldn't pronounce when they read it or couldn't spell when I said it.

The Loose Wheel said...

J-White drivin for all he's worth

red said...

@david: hardly. the point is: now that you know, you have to promise to pronounce it correctly. only if you don't do that part will i consider it a fail!

(kinda like . . oh . . . a certain wallace brother.)

WOW, bold move there!

Crafton is coming...

I wish they mention what trucks need to pit before the end of the race. Three wide!

Newracefan said...

I just remembered this was the cup/NW race where the pit reporters basically disappered because of the noise. Hope they fixed that problem (I bet Dr. Dirt and JP for that matter can give them some places to hide so we can hear them or just ask Ray and Adam since they obviously know)

Patrick said...

Vicky,

Same here. I'd say czech the spelling.

red said...

man, i hope it doesn't rain and turn this track green again before the rest of the racing this weekend! this is great stuff.

The Loose Wheel said...

Red, even if it does, it rubbered in fast. It was good by the end of the Modified race =)

why is it that SPEED has no problem keeping track of 36 trucks with two pit reporters while ESPN cannot keep track of 43 NW cars with 4 pit reporters.

How refreshing to actually hear pit reporters give a report.
