Live Blogging Wednesday Night's NASCAR Doubleheader on SPEED

This should be a blast. First of all the Whelen Modifieds are the quickest things the Bristol Motor Speedway has ever seen. Mike Joy and Dick Berggren will call the action at 7PM for this race special.

The race was actually run at 6PM, so please let us all enjoy it as it unfolds on TV. This is a very different style of racing than most NASCAR fans have seen, so hopefully we can enjoy it as it happens on SPEED.

Krista Voda is up next with The Setup. This pre-race show for the Camping World Truck Series will focus on Ron Hornaday. One other story Voda will be reporting is an update on racing veteran Johnny Benson, injured in a Supermodified wreck a while back. Benson is in Bristol and will appear on the show.

Rick Allen, Phil Parsons and Michael Waltrip are next with the CWTS race. This trio has learned to work well together, especially when Waltrip leaves his sponsor-driven agenda back in his motorcoach. Allen can certainly crank up the excitement and this racetrack is the perfect place for that.

The truck field is sometimes a bit thin, but this week all different kinds of drivers have entered for the Wednesday race. It should be a very different challenge for Hornaday once the green flag falls.

This post will serve to host your comments on the NASCAR doubleheader tonight on SPEED. To add your TV-related comment, just click on the comments button below. This is a family-friendly website, please keep that in mind when posting. Thanks for taking the time to stop by The Daly Planet.

red, we are going to drag you into the 1990's kicking and screaming.

TV recording device mandatory for all NASCAR fans.

Man, this is some good racing.

OK, you guys want the bad news right now or should I wait until the end of the race???

red said...

anon@9:39: because speed is committed to covering the race as it happens, not as they discussed it in meetings earlier in the week.

makes a huge difference: allowing the race to unfold versus trying to jam the race into a preconceived storyline.

Patrick said...

did my smart ass comment make them change their mind about repeating NN or is soccer going to run long?

Newracefan said...

JD Bad news give it to us now so we can enjoy Kyle getting passed by Crafton later

TexasRaceLady said...

Spit it out, JD>

Vicky D said...

JD - just tell us the good news. Thanks.

Patrick said...

as for the bad news? go for it, jd. i'll go get myself a cold glass of . . . water if it's really bad.

The Loose Wheel said...

friday might be a wash.

JD, no recording device here. I try not to miss much. Dont consider missing NN a crime though. Its not RPM, nothing will ever be that must-see ever again IMO

Vicky D said...

Jerry Punch got a promotion to PXP man for the truck races?

Daly Planet Editor said...

And the bad news is.....

NO MARTY REID IN BRISTOL!

Jerry Punch doubleheader!!!

Patrick said...

nicole lengthened her skirt?

The Loose Wheel said...

Joy.

Patrick, dont joke about the Nicole thing. I may not watch much NASCAR on ESPN away from race coverage but still!

OMG, NO! Rodent!

red said...

oh dear god in heaven! that's beyond bad! that's . . . that's . . . INHUMANE!

and now a digger sighting!

Vicky D said...

Well, I had the right person. This is terrible news how is Jerry going to keep up for 2 races at Bristol, especially.

PammH said...

Bad news now please! I'm almost past my bedtime as it is...ugh a Digger pitch on Speed.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Punch will also do Cup quals before he calls the N'wide race on Sat.

red said...

ok, so now that i'm finished pounding my head into the wall fo a few moments:

Newracefan said...

Great thanks JD I'll pick up some adult bev. on the way home Friday. We'll on the bright side I have plans Sat so much of my race watching will be FF anyway.

Well my TDP friends, You know what this means:

At my cue take your Red "JP Really Isn't THAT Bad" Pill, an extra dose will arrive in time for Saturday night.

TexasRaceLady said...

Oh, dang, JD. That IS bad news.

I'll hope to high heaven my radio station carries the race.

PammH said...

Awful news about JP! Soooo glad I have Sirius. And I'm out! Thanks for the great blogs for all the business of the day. Great day for Nascar, imo.

Sophia said...

JD

Some of us would like to know the NAMES of the peeps Directing the lousy camera work on ESPN? Now that's the worst news.

and why don't we know he/she/their names? We know the name of the FABULOUS Mike Wells? :)

Newracefan said...

David that pill is too big to swallow.

He'll be exhusted by the end of the cup race. JD was this always the plan or was there a change?

red said...

nrf: have a few for me. somehow, i don't think water is gonna cut it this weekend.

Newracefan said...

Note to self- bring home the radio you took to work for those Monday Rainouts!

Daly Planet Editor said...

No need for names, Sophia. Just employees being told what do to.

Very different working for ESPN fulltime than freelancing six races for TNT.

TexasRaceLady said...

I'm definitely going to add adult beverage to my Saturday grocery trip.

Newracefan said...

Red if my Saturday plans run they way I think it won't be a problem

Karen said...

Red said ...

(by the way, you should have seen the close-captioned typist try desperately to spell "keselowski": took 4 attempts and still got it wrong by typing a double "K" at the start!)

Red, did you know that court reporters do closed captioning? No typist could keep up with anyone talking real time.

Sophia said...

been too busy to watch this race...too many distractions, phone calls and editing stuff. Stands look mostly empty...hope the camera work has been ok.

I also love the new Bristol. My opinion of the place was how Kenny Schrader described it years ago on Monday night BEFORE the change. "It's a great event, but a horrible race."

Now the racing is better and long time fans hate it. Go figure.

time for an ESPN Friday night NW drinking game

Daly Planet Editor said...

The way it was scheduled. I was hoping for a change. Once he is done with quals and the Nationwide race, Sunday should be charming....

Daly Planet Editor said...

I kind of like that truck series flagman/person/woman. Anyone know anything about her? She just jumps right in there.

Whew, that yellow and black cosmic flash after the replay is getting to me.

Newracefan said...

JD I thought it was a Saturday night race, am I confused

red said...

@karen: wow, i did not know that but it makes a ton of sense.

(great shot of that official not hearing the wreck over the wall behind him. i believe he is the epitome of the word "stoic" right there -- or his ear protection is really, really good!)

Sophia said...

Only thing about radio this weekend...Isn't this a PRN race?

what a difference between MRN guys and PRN. Love the MRN guys...PRN..not so much. Hopefully more info than the tv though..but those great voices on MRN, I could listen to them everynight.

Patrick said...

Lots of trucks still running, no matter how many laps down. When's the last time that happened? Did they mention the 'Onion' is back?

The Loose Wheel said...

Sophia, old time fans aint alone. Biffle does too. Says the race isn't as tough as it used to be which I can agree with to an extent. However Kenny S was right. It was a great "show" but the race was eh.

Then again I'm STILL bitter about 1999. Ugh, AND Chocolate Meyers had the nerve to say DW caused that melee too

Anonymous said...

Fri night NW race

The Loose Wheel said...

JD, I believe her name is Kim Lopez. Her and another girl alternate up there if my memory serves me correctly. SPEED did a piece on her a couple season's ago I think too.

Dave in OKC said...

Will you all be live blogging the Saturday Night Drinking Game from Bristol? :-)

Patrick said...

Wow! Really missed that restart. by 2 laps.

Anonymous said...

Sophia radio is somewhat simple

all ISC tracks == MRN radio
Bruton Smith tracks - anything with SPEEDWAY in name plus Sonoma = PRN

only wildcards are Pocono, Dover and Indy.

WickedJ said...

ok Kyle has it won, and sadly theres nothin on tv

Patrick said...

Not looking too good for gramps' 6-peat.

red said...

jd: as i say, i've seen her at the dover truck races but she doesn't handle cup there. don't know anything about her but i like watching her set-up and then work the race. i generally sit behind her (but up much higher) when i get a chance.

does one google "flag person nascar truck racing" and hope for a hit?

hey! there's a GREAT explanation of a broken valve stem: good close-up, solid info. wonder if tech center guys from espn are watching to see how it should be done?

WickedJ said...

JD - http://www.truckseries.com/cgi-script/NCTS_07/articles/000126/012647.htm

Vicky D said...

Why can't they change the location of the valve stem or make it shorter.

Sophia said...

Max Papis 32 laps down.

.did he wreck or have engine problem? Bummer..he is such a nice guy and he and his wife FUN to follow on Twitter.

Think Kryle could come in second again....and be happy about it. Just sayin'

Daly Planet Editor said...

NRF, sorry...too much typing. I meant he does Cup quals on Fri before the N'wide race and then comes back on Sat for the big Cup race.

If you remember, this is what happened last season...and it was baaaaad.

Daly Planet Editor said...

This was a good show, even MW did a solid job.

Patrick said...

Let's hope last week's NW race prepped DJ to step in when JP falters.

red said...

thanks, wickedj and david, for the info. now i can put the name with the professional!

The Loose Wheel said...

Vicky, your limited by the design of the engine plus NASCAR limits what you can do. Plus a shorter valve stem leads to other issues, namely less performance because your trying to get as much air/fuel mixture into the cylinder to make as much power as possible. Shorter valve stem would mean to compensate they would have to have more duration on the camshaft which would reduce durability.

red said...

ok, gang, i'm out! see everyone later this week.

jd: thanks for the warning!

The Loose Wheel said...

Valve stem is actually a pretty rare failure.

Sophia said...

That was a good explanation and camera work and lighting about the valve stem.

kb...sigh

carpetbagger

:)

Vicky D said...

Boy that guy looks really excited . . . .

The Loose Wheel said...

missed the valve stem piece, had to put my dinner plate away. =\

Sophia said...

David

Didn't RCR have some valve stem issues a couple years back? or somebody..forget the details but it was kinda controversial IIRC

Vicky D said...

David - was it a salad for dinner?

Daly Planet Editor said...

Plenty of time for post race.

MikeC said...

Was about to say that....what are they going to do to kill an hour? The broadcast window goes to 11p.m.

The Loose Wheel said...

Some teams might have, don't recall the RCR one offhand. If they had one it was more than likely an issue with the supplier than a design issue. I remember when they first ran the R07 at Talladega in the fall race in 2007 that they had an issue where the pistons were getting turned sideways in the cylinder bore leading to catastrophic failure.

Id have to see the replay of their explanation on SPEED to really remark on what they were saying though. More often then not when a part "just fails" its a valve spring or something along those lines.

The Loose Wheel said...

Negative Vicky. Ribs lol. Not made very well either =\

Anonymous said...

OK -I just finished watching the race - no need to do anything but sit in recliner. Then I SAW the Bad News!!!

I hope MRN carries it because I will not listen (or attempt to watch) AnyThing with Doc doing PxP, so I guess my plans have changed.

What is espn thinking????

Vicky D said...

Our David had a solid top 10 hopefully they'll have a nice interview.

Anonymous said...

OK - I'm gonna watch TV from recliner - good nite all maybe catcha in afternoon.

Sean said...

Good interview by Kyle, solid broadcast overall

Anonymous said...

Solid doubleheader by Speed tonight. They set the bar very high for ESPN to meet, possibly too high.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Have a good night everyone, see you on Friday night for the Nationwide Series race on ESPN2.

Thanks for stopping by on this midweek live blog.

SonicAD said...

Can't imagine SPEED will stick with post-race all to 11, they'll probably go to Back in the Day or something at 10:30.

Sophia said...

Touch of Gray...Guys most of us LOVE Gray hair or the salt and pepper look. Stop worrying about that stuff.
My PSA for the day.

Nice to see the truck guys get post race love on the tv!

The Loose Wheel said...

Thank God Im a youngin Sophia =p

Just turned 22 the other day, plus I have light hair....so dont gotta worry about either for awhile. Just keeping it =\

enjoying the extended post-race.

-taps screen- is this thing on ESPN!?

Patrick said...

Sophia,

I'll take gray. As long as there is quantity. of course, I'm almost twice ^

Sophia said...

David

WOW, you are still a puppy. I have socks older than you!
Speed finally left the air...if they said bye I missed it. Oh well..they gave about 30 minutes so that was great.

Thanks for the midweek blog JD.

Anonymous said...

I like that SPEED joined the regularly scheduled program already in progress. Wasn't the regularly scheduled program at 10:30 truck race coverage. But it's good to see the Inside the All-Star Race again and not something else.

Sophia said...

@Patrick

You're almost twice WHAT...your comment cut off, lol.

What IS this show SPEED joined in progress. I don't recognize it? and a kitten keeps walking across my keyboard and jumping on and off the bed. so I might have missed something...I miss these kind of shows whatever it is.

SPEED used to have stuff like this during THE WEEK! :)

Sophia said...

SPEED had truck race until 11pm pn digital guide.

Oh inside the headsets. Tht's why this is good. not seen that

Patrick said...

message didn't cut off. the "^" was pointing to the pup.

G'night.

Patrick said...

g'nite sophia. will see y'all friday. probably not sat (heading to sugarland for mom's b-day).

The Loose Wheel said...
