Live Blogging The Nationwide Series From Kansas (ESPN2 - 3PM)

Here we go with another college football Saturday. On ESPN2, Iowa is playing Arkansas State and the game started at noon ET. NASCAR Countdown is scheduled for 3PM and the Nationwide Series race itself is at 3:30PM.

Allen Bestwick is poised to kick off the coverage with Rusty Wallace and Brad Daugherty alongside. This trio is reliable, dependable and excitable. As you can see from the picture above, Tony Eury Sr. is back in the Keselowski pit this week after getting injured in a Charlotte area auto accident recently. Good news.

Marty Reid is back and perhaps this week Dale Jarrett will be back on his game and give fans a feeling for what he can really do on TV. Andy Petree is always solid, but Jarrett is the star of this show and he needs to shine.

This is going to be a race filled with great stories due to a wide variety of circumstances. Sprint Cup Series veterans are mixed with rookies out to make a name for themselves and several Nationwide regulars just trying to hold on for the rest of the season.

The ESPN pit reporting corps of Jamie Little, Shannon Spake, Vince Welch and Dave Burns will be covering the live action. They may have to hustle as this big and fast track is known for producing a lot of incidents, especially with the scenario building for this race.

The ESPN production team is not slaved to a Chase format for these events and normally does not use all the bells and whistles available to them. Several Nationwide Series races produced by the team this season have simply been fun to watch. Hopefully, Kansas will join that list.

The battle for ESPN this season on shared weekends it that the Nationwide race becomes suddenly a bother. In fact, this series often produces much better racing than the its Sprint Cup big brother. Translating that to TV by giving it the same level of attention as the Sunday event is the challenge.

This post will update in the comments section the transition between the college football game and the NASCAR telecast. ESPN has a bad habit of waiting until the last minute to inform viewers of what is happening. The best guess is that ESPN Classic will once again get a visit from Allen Bestwick and company.

To join our discussion, just click on the comments button below. This is a family-friendly website, please keep that in mind when posting. Thanks for taking the time to stop by.

JD...why can't they publish what they think? Much of the media spends a LOT of time telling the fans how stupid we are to hate the 'chase', so why can't they call ESPN out for producing race 'coverage' that is almost guaranteed to drive viewers away? Another dictate from Baby Brian?

red said...

hey jd? apropos of absolutely nothing but i've been meaning to ask: did you catch the cocktail party physics column wherein dr diandra leslie-pelecky (of stock car science) recounts the physics involved in "nascar driver vs wiley coyote: a real-life seriously inelastic collison"? she discusses what happened when colin braun hit a coyote at toyota arizona proving grounds while testing at 190 mph.

note of caution: the bottom photo is VERY graphic -- but the science is fascinating!

The Loose Wheel said...

Dot, true but remember last year?

Forced to go which caused him to miss out on his F1 test with Toyota...

Dot said...

@ red, I saw that picture a few months ago with the coyote. Someone made a joke about it being Digger.

The Loose Wheel said...

Red, Brad Coleman, not Colin Braun.

rofl Boyd! I get some great email.

How tired do you think the sponsors in the Nationwide Series are of being treated like this down the stretch on TV?

This whole thing of jumping around from tight shot to tight shot without any perspective is brutal.

Sally said...

Can you imagine Vile Kyle in F1? They thought JPM was a wild man!

boyd said...

Anyone else think this is humorous? Lots of alcohol ads, and Beam and JD pulling out of racing.

Sally said...

JD. Maybe you can share some of that mail with us sometime...anonymously, of course, so no one loses their hard card.

The Loose Wheel said...

I see RCR took note from JRM of how to promo your sponsor on the roof of the car

Dot said...

@ David. Yeah. You'd think Weed wouldn't want to be in the top 5 again in case another opportunity presented itself.

No offense to you when I refer to Kyle as Weed. ;)

Becky said...

One thing I don't understand is how they can't have the ticker on screen when they have other graphics on screen or when doing in-car. Are they limited to only a single graphic on screen at a time?

Daly Planet Editor said...

Sally,

1 - They need credentials to continue to get into races and the infield media centers.

2 - Their publishers are often in cooperation on advertising and marketing with NASCAR.

3 - Rocking the media boat would almost gaurentee no appearance on NASCAR Now or any future with ESPN. Seen any of the "outspoken" ESPN reporters or writers talk about these issues?

Got to love real life.

red said...

thanks, david: second time i've made that same mistake. don't know why i can't keep it straight!

(course, the first time was on the bus on the way home from dover and adult beverages were involved so that might explain some of it!)

the science of our sport is so freaking amazing!

The Loose Wheel said...

Oh none taken. I am used to it by now.

He is going to win the championship so he will be prepared =)

Hopefully another opportunity presents itself down the road though because I was awfully interested to see how up to speed he would be.

I like the no pit call right now. Won't pay off in the short run but its an extra set of tires late... May decide it.

The Loose Wheel said...

JD you think with the new SPEED show, someone might speak out since they would have an alternative to go on rather than NN?

PammH said...

I'm liking a few shots at the moment. The countdown is getting on my nerves tho.

boyd said...

Was that a brief blimp shot of the cars racing UNDER THE GRANDSTAND ROOF?

The Loose Wheel said...

HAHA, JD did you see Moody's site today? Reutimann and Sadler attacked him, spoofed the Mayfield story too.

Amusing stuff.

Karen said...

red, I, for one, would love to hear about your experience in Dover and if you DVR'd the race and watched what we had to watch. Even if you didn't tape, still want to know about your view of everything that happened. Don't know exactly how you'd do that on JD's blog. Just wondering out loud.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Here ya go:

Ryan McGee: If we ever catch Bin Laden we should make him watch that Virginia-UNC game.

Charlie said...

Watching this is like watching practice when a group of cars get together on Speed.

Dot said...

Speaking of tickers. How is it BSPN can run the bottom one during commls but, can't run the driver one during off track shots. Such as CC interviews, etc.

Dot said...

@ JD, didn't Ryan mean any race on BSPN?

boyd said...

@Dot
Geneva convention rules says they can't tortue in that way.

PammH said...

@Dot, I think that's what JD is saying. Ryan can't say that about his bosses..sad.

Dot said...

@ boyd, funny.

Oh, horrors. Weed hasn't won in nine races. How has life gone on?

Charlie said...

Watching the Fox ticker and the cars in 10th on back have been having a battle.

Newracefan said...

Karen I was a Dover and DVR'd the race. I found that I was filling in the blanks a lot from what I knew being at the race. Only thing the DVR was good for; closer view of the wrecks and pit stops and interviews that included pictures. Otherwise total waste of time. The biggest difference the Lagano wreck MRN was screaming and I almost missed the wreck when I watched the race on TV. Talk about night and day. I understand that the TV can not aways follow my drivers so being at the race is the only way to see how all of them were racing but I saw way more racing at the track than I saw on TV and I can only look one place at a time unlike the ESPN multiple cameras.

boyd said...

Weed's got talent, but I hate seeing him run away and hide in Trucks and NNS.
Not my driver.

The debris was the way this race has strung out.

Dot said...

@PammH, Yes it is sad when one can't speak the truth.

The Loose Wheel said...

I LOVE those Penske Truck Rental colors. Something about that yellow and blue just looks so awesome in my opinion.

Sally said...

Ah, the advantage of being at the race live. You can actually watch a driver moving up, working traffic, passing cars, you know, the continuity of the racing?

Dot said...

When I hear wedge adjustment it makes me think about getting underwear out of ......

Sally said...

Dot! You have to stop doing that! It is the EXACT term I use when, well, you know.

boyd said...

@Dot
@sally
now I have to clean Pepsi off my lap top.

Charlie said...

When I am at a race I just watch my driver and listen to that driver on the scanner.

Sally said...

Sorry Boyd. It's just that I've been using that 'Nascarism' for many years, and it tickles me to hear it from someone else. Now I know I'm not the only twisted one around here!

Dot said...

@ Sally, that's why I like this site and the Planeteers. Like I said before, we're a funny bunch.

Charlie said...

They said the name Kenny Wallace. I don't believe it.

boyd said...

@Dot,
Between this and twitter it's the only way to find out what's happening at the 'race'.

Dot said...

@ boyd, true statement. I missed a few races while at the pool. Got a nice recap via TDP and Twitter.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Wonder if Marty Reid is missing the NHRA right about now?

Vicky D said...

Dot - good one! I wish we could see a little more of the track.

Vicky D said...

Dot - good one! I wish we could see a little more of the track.

Sophia said...

ok are there fewer Tweeting about NASCAR than usual? either that or my Twitter is acting funky...not seeing many sports update at all...odd

Usually bunch of guys Tweeting...unless that's only on CUP racing.

boyd said...

Texted a friend at the track. He said that it's been a fairly entertaining race. I told him it looked boring.
He asked what race I was watching and I told him on ESPN..his replay was 'turn on your radio'.

boyd said...

oops "reply"

The Loose Wheel said...

dont really like the stationary camera when doing speeds at the line. wish they'd focus on a battle instead of kyle also.

Am glad they did do speeds at the line =)

wow, ask and i shall receive

Daly Planet Editor said...

The producing and directing are horrible. There needs to be changes.

Marty is trying his best to keep things in order, but he is about at his wits end.

Sally said...

You have to wonder if the producer and director have ever just sat in the stands (you know, with the common folk) and acturally watched a Nascar race? Do they know what makes a race 'exciting'? Do they know how to make sense out of it for viewers? Do they even give a rip?

boyd said...

I'm about ready to throw in the towel today.
It's below average even for ESPN.

Erik said...

That was a good nap.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Erik, go back to sleep. Trust me.

TexasRaceLady said...

I feel like Tom Hanks on his island.

I haven't a clue as to what is going on.

Becky said...

Another (of the many) thing that's bugging me today: pit stops ... they show the 3 stacked on the left and then all of pit road on the right, but then they zoom in on Logano at the end. Excuse me but I'm trying to follow my driver (Keselowsi) out. Zooming in doesn't allow me to do that.

ESPN needs to get the baboons out of the control room and replace them with someone who knows how to cover a race.

Sophia said...

Erik

How YOU doin? You really should see somebody. you have a cough? chest pressure? Wheezing? discomfort?

The Loose Wheel said...

Full field rundown on MRN.

Barney Hall is the best!

boyd said...

@sophia
My head hurts from the wonderful ESPN coverage, what should I do?

Sophia said...

Sally your 5.26 post

No to all. :( I've not been paying attention to tv..just not worth it.

how ESPN is ALLOWED to do this after a few years...is astounding, ain't it?

I hear a noise......sounds of ratings plummeting.

PLUMMET MALL! :)

Sally said...

Amazing how that overhead shot let us see the trouble Logano had as it happened! HINT!

Vicky D said...

Maybe Erik is not physically sick, it could be just ESPN-itis!

red said...

@karen: no dvr so my dover experience is based on what i saw at the track compared to what you guys commented upon here.

#48 was the class of the field all day -- no other way to see it. he ran away with it, not b/c of the cot/clean air reality but b/c that car was so incredibly strong.

lots and lots of subtle racing happening all over the track but one had to actually watch the entire field to be able to see it b/c it often took 2-5 laps for the actual pass to get completed. watching the top 2 or 3 wouldn't show what i saw. side by side, random 3-wides, and some real bonzai passes, especially going into 2. and as much as he makes me crazy-nuts: young mr busch was pretty amazing once he got a lap down. not reckless, just aggressive.

that being said: the race is about 100 laps too long. cars just held position in that long green flag run: no one could pass, they all just rode.

drivers searched for the fastest line all day. lots of cars tried to rim for a few laps then swung back down; some ran low then moved up. there was a middle groove but it seemed to come and go for drivers all day.

the logano wreck scared the crap outta me. it was uglier than tv can even begin to describe. after he finally came down on his tires, the track was (relatively) silent until his net went down and then it was as if we all exhaled at the same time. it just went on for so long. i'm not unaccustomed to hearing wrecks happen but the "thuds" as his car hit the concrete then got airborne then "thud" again was significantly different than the usual squealing tires and metal on metal crunching. not a good sound in any way.

high point: meeting nrf! she even asked mike joy if he could take over for dr punch! his reply was along the lines of "fox and espn don't play well together!"

also great to talk with jeff gluck: he assures us that TDP is taken VERY seriously. and actually asked if the espn broadcasts are "really that bad?" needless to say, we assured him they were even worse than that. he's an all-around nice guy, by the way.

being at the track is always different than watching on tv, we all know that. but the difference was so very, very dramatic for me when reading planeteer comments that it seemed to support my contention that the racing isn't as bad as folks believe: it's the broadcasts that are so bad.

Dot said...

@ VickyD, you're killing me. Now we'll all be sick.

The Loose Wheel said...

The only bit of animation by ESPN was when Vickers went around, the rest of the battle they were like "Eh, this is good but whatever" While MRN calling the SAME battle was up on the wheel!

Daly Planet Editor said...

What is really strange is that the mistakes are just fundamental.

Almost like college kids are doing it for the first time.

Full screen on green flag pit stops missing racing and a caution.

Never resetting the field after caution flag pit stops at all.

Can't explain or show the wave around cars after an accident.

Blowing up the triple split in the pits and missing the race off pit road.

Jumping between tight shots and losing any perspective on the racing or the field.

It is mind-numbingly bad today.

Is that a word?

The Loose Wheel said...

Awesome stuff red, great to have ya back

Erik said...

JD,
I just browsed through the comments. Counting sheep would appear to be more exciting option.

Sophia,
Symptoms have dulled now that i'm on the meds. Just feel drained now more than anything.

Sally said...

So....Brian did last week essentially what Cousin Carl just did to Vickers. Is anyone going to say that Carl is too aggressive?

Daly Planet Editor said...

I have that pic with Mike Joy. You guys looked great. That is real social networking!

Sally said...

I meant BRAD did what Carl just did to Brian Vickers. Getting sleepy....

boyd said...

@JD
I LOVE nascar, but ESPN has nearly made me turn off the TV and give up today.
Do the A teams get football games now?

Dot said...

Wow, up close pit stop by an Odd Wad team.

There is just no rhyme or reason to this broadcast.

@jd: "It is mind-numbingly bad today. Is that a word?"

it is now, jd, it is now.

Putting on my other hat:

The current flu is a three day deal but is rather mild.

If you don't get meds in the first 24, it just has to run its course.

Swine is targeting youngsters, pregnant women and those with existing medical conditions.

Wash hands, especially after supermarkets, gas pumps, eating out, etc...

Hey, it's flu season!

Daly Planet Editor said...

Look how fast they zoom in and lose the perspective. Wow...awful.

Sophia said...

ESPN's race coverage is like "Ground hog Day" or "A Day at the Races" to mention two movie titles..only minus the HUMOR.

Lather, rinse, repeat

ESPN is churning out garbage by the race. It seems deliberate. No one but us seems to care, either, and that is what makes it so intolerable. I have given up hope that ESPN will ever improve in the least. No matter what happens in the booth, the disconnect between the booth and the production truck is miles wide and has been from the start of the contract. Oh, well.

I found I can not access the race online...two sites are not working...one is playing football or something..and the other music.

Dot said...

@ David, no. I honestly don't know.

Daly Planet Editor said...

David, is it the inhaled dose?

red said...

@jd: " Daly Planet Editor said...

absolutely true, jd! i met folks i've only "talked with" on other sites as well. in fact, gluck mentioned that he used to read that site regularly b/c he was able to get info FROM FANS that he didn't get any other way. pretty interesting.

i also liked that gluck sets up "tweet-ups" when he's at a track. it's a great way to make the connection between the fans and a media guy. we had great conversation about a whole bunch of topics and i enjoyed being treated as an intelligent fan by someone in the media!

it would be interesting to see if reporting would change if more media folk ventured out of the media center and the garage area and actually talked to fans before the race.

(plus, gluck has a neat sense of humor and somehow was able to keep track of the several conversations that were happening all at the same time!)

@ David, I misunderstood your reply to me. I got it now.

Thanks for telling me it's Brian Scott. I got his autograph last week. He signed my Albertson's reward card.

The Loose Wheel said...

NRF, that would be nice but I have no control over any of that. They are saying 4 locations are doing the shipping but for right now I imagine the big chains are probably going to get it first before it filters down.

Karen said...

It would be really nice to see more of the young kids get some good opportunities. And ESPN finally notices that Brad K is slowly catching Kyle. We know more than they do! Or, we are willing to share the knowlege.

The Loose Wheel said...

Brad and Kyle are just matching laps. No time without a caution.

Karen said...

Dot said...

And Annett got the call.

Sally said...

Ah. The caution that closes up the field for the final run.

The Loose Wheel said...

MRN calling it back a bit further, Annett got loose chasing Brendan, ran up the track then off his left rear.

Bummer for Annett really hoped he'd get a good finish today =(

@jd: no doubt folks are paying attention but . . . actually getting out there, walking the fan areas and talking with fans about topics sure would give even more insight, doncha think?

and honestly? isn't there some amount of time before the drivers meeting when folks could venture out?

don't get me wrong: i appreciate all the info they bring us and the work they do, both as individuals and as a group. but it was interesting to listen to other fans answer the questions, add my thoughts, bounce it all around.

just seems like a way to get fresh views on the sport.

The Loose Wheel said...

Or, just Pops.

Sally said...

I'm really tired of the "Joey Roll" business. If he's too scared to get back in a race car after that, then he shouldn't be driving a race car. Like he's the only driver who ever had a bad crash and raced the next week? Have they not watched any of the racing for the past 50 years?

Sorry for the double post.

The Loose Wheel said...

Sally, i have no issue with him being scared. That is natural. Too scared to get back in the car? He even said after that wreck he has MORE confidence to get back in the car because of how safe they are. I imagine rolling down the banking at Dover anyone would get scared in that moment.

red said...

i really am not looking forward to seeing that wreck all day tomorrow. those of you who watch pre-race: best of luck b/c i suspect it'll rival the chase as "the" topic.

To expand on your comment David. How do drivers get back in the car? Some years ago I was rearended (only minor damage) and was scared to drive for two weeks afterwards.

I can't blame them for being apprehensive.

PammH said...

Lots of post-race interviews-that's the only good news.

Nice of Marty to try and make it sound more exciting than it was. Did they just skip over the radio transmission of the 18 car saying something sucks? They were too busy figuring out what stupid obvious post race questions they were going to ask.

Wow, what a battle for 12th thanks for that guys. How many times did Marty talk about Wallace being 5th in points and how many times did he say if the race ended now? I will never understand their insistence of focusing on what ifs. I don't care about the points as of right now, tell me at the end of the race the only time it matters.

I can't wait for tomorrow! Any takers on how many times between the pre-race and the race we will see the flip from LAST WEEK and what a traumatic week it has caused Joey to have?

Dot I've been rear-ended several times. Red lights train crossings you know places I'm supposed to be stopped. I finally stopped looking in the mirrow every time I stopped and got hit again when BIG pickup truck though the light was going to change.

Thanks again for hanging with us even through a dreary broadcast of what looked to be a fun race and certainly was exciting on the radio.

There will be a new post up later and we will live blog the Cup race on Sunday as well.

The post for naming Jeremy Mayfield's possible new reality TV series will remain open all day.

See ya folks!

Dot, these guys are all unreal. Guys like Tony Stewart amaze me. Remember Talladega a few years ago when he was sliding on his roof down the start finish line? He said he keyed the radio up because he wanted the crew to hear but forgot the antenna was on the roof and got ground off pretty much the second he went on his lid. Tony is a guy that shows no fear and to me that is simply amazing.

Joey getting scared in that moment the car is rolling, totally understandable since that was the first time he went off his wheels, but I love how he has handled it since. Shows he is the real deal and isn't scared to get back in.

Just have to trust your car, team and equipment that if something does happen, that you'll be okay.

If you race scared though, like Sally said: You got no business being out there.

Noticed Justin Allgaier moved up to 5th place in the point standings knocking Steven Wallace to 6th place and watching the championship banquet on TV. The #66 will be on a mission the last few races.

@ NorCalFan, yeah, Mission Impossible.

@ David 6:36, that's what happened to Ricky Hendrick after he hit the wall at LVMS.

I just marvel how it affects some drivers and not others.

I was out for most of the afternoon & recorded the race on the DVR. After 75 laps I could not take anymore. I really don't think ESPN cares anymore. Again football goes over. Tight shots everywhere, Tim Brewer showing the viewers how to put tape on a car, video packages, overkill of old radio communications & single car/crew cheif split screen. The finish was a disaster. Showing Joey Logano & Kyle Busch cross the line, then cut to Carl Edwards battle, show a few more cars, then off to the celebrating crew. It is the same garbage every week.

Shannon won worst pit reporter of the day. In the first 100 laps of the race, she was supposed to be covering Joey Logano's pit stop, but instead admitted she was looking at worn out tires & had 0 to report.

Brad D made me laugh when he talked about drving on worn tires. What racing experience do you have, exactly? None. Why are you even here explaining things you have not experienced?

we left to get a quick bite to eat at Bob Evans before the RACE ENDED!& no did not tape the end since

a. I hadn't been paying attention
b. Things have not change but WORSENED on ESPN

I really don't care anymore. Room mate couldn't believe it! :-)

NASCAR doesn't care.

Brian France is happy so. . .

Sorry, I'm a dollar late and a few hours short of joining y'all. Had stuff to do and just finished watching the race on my Tivo. Really bad job today by ESPN. Glad I could fast forward through parts. Looks like a long day tomorrow with the Cup race.

Have to share a computer with my niece, and both of us are on Twitter and Facebook, so I can't take the time to read all the posts. It was cloudy, windy and very, very cold at KS. No sunburn, just windburn this time. I hope you didn't suffer thru too much with the TV. The race was really fun; I mostly listened to Little Gator's scanner (he's back in 5th in the standings!) with some MRN thrown in. There is supposed to be more sun and less wind tomorrow. Again, you have my sympathies for the ESPN broadcast.
