Live Blogging The Sprint Cup Series From Charlotte (7PM - ABC)

This is one of the biggest races of the Chase. Lowe's Motor Speedway is the home track for almost every Sprint Cup Series team. It's a night race under the lights and in primetime on ABC.

Allen Bestwick starts the night with the NASCAR Countdown pre-race show at 7PM. He will be joined by Rusty Wallace and Brad Daugherty. Tim Brewer will be in the Tech Center. Handling the interviews are Jamie Little, Shannon Spake, Vince Welch and Dave Burns.

The pre-race show is thirty minutes and then the NASCAR on ESPN team takes the air. Jerry Punch, Dale Jarrett and Andy Petree will handle the live action.

Last night, ESPN started the night off with a great pre-race show for the Nationwide Series race. Bestwick handed the race off to announcer Marty Reid and the action began on a great note. The first thirty minutes consisted of wideshots of racing, aerial views of the speedway and interviews with drivers out of the race.

Then, ESPN turned the page and started down the road fans know all too well. Extremely tight shots of one or two cars. Recorded soundbites played back during the live race under the green flag. Bizarre oldies music blaring while the announcers threw to commercial. It was the same bad dream again for NASCAR fans.

Marty Reid and Dale Jarrett repeatedly told the producer and director that there was "three wide action further back in the pack." It did not matter. Stories like Mike Bliss and Dave Blaney carving their way through the field were poorly covered.

It was all Sprint Cup drivers all the time. It has been that way since Daytona with the exception of the short-track race this summer from Indy.

On this Saturday night it should be interesting to see if ESPN learns from the Friday night struggles or just repeats the same TV production pattern. One thing is for sure, we will all learn the answer to that together.

ok, decided to make an attempt to watch coverage with open mind. But it is so painful to know how much we miss during a caution that is happening and no update from the booth when they come back from break. i just think if a small mention to update is given to fans it would be a big help in this abc coverage

bevo said...

Wow! A radar!

Anonymous said...

I forgot about the race and I missed the first 13 laps. Duh! Jerry Punch sounds extremely monotone as usual.

Rain..again?

Sophia said...

I can't get anyting on Nascar.com to load...tried 2 browsers. oh well :(

Jonathan thats what Ive been talking about - I believe its the track PA when PRN (or MRN in other tracks) in in a break but this guy is annoying.

Daly Planet Editor said...

I hope you guys brought coffee, it is going to be a very long night.

Triple splits???

Vicky D said...

Raindrops keep fallin' on my head. When JPM's audio is quiet, we can hear the radio broadcast and they are fantastic.

jonathan said...

sally speaking of that, I was thinking since Nascar did everything right w the Nationwide COT that they didnt do w the COT in Sprint Cup why dosent Nascar swap cars next year. No Bumpstops, No wing we get a racing spoiler, better all around and from what the racers who raced this new car they love it compared to the cot. and Mustang, wouldnt that bring back alot of fans if we get the muscle cars in sprint cup. dosent make sense to me

Tripp said...

Just checked the Intellicast radar and this shouldn't last long. There's another cell behind this one and a third that's dissipating a bit farther out. They're all small and should be gone within 15 minutes or so.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Brad K. speeding, see if they mention it.

Hey, any start and park cars tonight? Where is MV or buschseries61?

Patrick said...

Good lawd. I'm having some serious laptop speed issues. I think I'll take this rain caution as an opportunity to restart. Been having resource problems since last week's MS (XP)update.

Steve L. said...

Maybe the rain will help keep them bunched up for the evening to help the racing.
Just like all the other COT races, they'll get in line until the last 20 laps and then the rcing will be good to the end.

Dot said...

@ bevo, I'm on my over. Not too spicy please.

Anonymous said...

Jonathan - $$$. In this economy, Cup teams do not want to build new cars. Where would the old COT cars go?

I do agree the new Nationwide COT looks and sounds much better than the Cup COT. We can only dream...

Daly Planet Editor said...

jonathan, I will keep TDP readers up to date on the Danica story.

I believe the N'wide COT and the high profile races have her attention and the Go Daddy money.

Regardless of personal feelings or doubts about her racing ability, her presence might really help the series.

The sponsor count on the N'wide and Truck side is at critical mass right now.

Anonymous said...

If the race ended now I could be asleep by 11PM Eastern

Sally said...

They won't swap the COT's because that means that nascar would have to admit they made a huge mistake with the car to begin with. The classic case of an elephant being a mouse designed by committee.

Lou said...

for once a song to break that applies. who will stop the rain, by ccr. thanks abc

I had to get a new laptop several months ago but lucked out and got an XP AND a matte screen. I really fought going to Vista

(I need to take pic of old laptop..held together with C Clamp and ductape from broken hinge..and has no fan as motherboard was bad for two years -need to keep freezer brick under it. Takes 3-19 attempts to hook up to Internet...long story) Looks hillbilly but ONCE it's on, still works like a dream for most things I needed a laptop for.

My room mate has the new VISTA & shiny reflective screen. Tough on the eyes and Vista is slow..but he uses FFox.

Beating A Dead Horse said...

One camera on one car and one pit crew makes for a Heluva Good HD video portrait, but is no good for telling the story of the race. We do want to tell the story of the race, don't we guys?

Sally said...

Wait 10 - 15 minutes and they might mention problems on pit road...or injuries.

The Loose Wheel said...

Mears made up a TON of ground on that round of stops

Why can't they show the pit stops in split screen? We don't need to see them one at a time. If something happens, they can rerun it. They have no problem doing that for cautions.

@sally... NASCAR has been all about the "show" for at least a decade now. It's not unique to them. Regional series often concentrate on that too. It can work... sometimes.

Dot said...

Is this the caution where the 55 jackman gets hurt?

Beating A Dead Horse said...

Hotpass is using some Sprint video tonight. Nice.

The Loose Wheel said...

Sally, that makes me sad hearing that comment. The sport wasnt founded for the fans, it was founded for the racers to have a safer sanctioned orderly place to race without getting in trouble with the law or with outlaw races. Then the $$ rolled in and the entertainment became more valued then the race.

I can sit there and watch laptimes all day and find it fascinating. That last run before stops watching JPM just slice into Denny's lead was impressive. Then watching Denny walk away after stops was fun too. Kahne was turning the fastest laps on that last run, Denny 2nd fastest on track. Shockingly Allmendinger had some fast laps too.

Kyle spinning out is a shocker, ran out of talent I guess.

Bent that splitter pretty bad its going to kill them. Wonder if ABC will discuss that?

Daly Planet Editor said...

Bevo, I could not believe they blew not only the caution flag pitstops but the green flag as well.

It just boggles the mind how SPEED, TNT and Fox can get the fundamentals right but a huge media company like ESPN is so far off the track....

--KarenB

Sally said...

@ Tripp...it's always been about the show, but such obvious manipulation is the new 'standard'. Things like the top 35 rule, the lucky dog and now the 'wave around' are all ways to make 'the show' better.

J_Fellenbaum said...

Why does ESPN setup the triple Spilt screen for Caution, and then cut away to full screen of 48 team finishing their stop, even though they were part of the triple pit screens?

Makes no FREAKIN sense? Just stay in the triple pits until they are all moving and then go to the end pit road shot w/ the position gained/lost graphic.
