Live Blogging The Sprint Cup Series From Charlotte (7PM - ABC)

This is one of the biggest races of the Chase. Lowe's Motor Speedway is the home track for almost every Sprint Cup Series team. It's a night race under the lights and in primetime on ABC.

Allen Bestwick starts the night with the NASCAR Countdown pre-race show at 7PM. He will be joined by Rusty Wallace and Brad Daugherty. Tim Brewer will be in the Tech Center. Handling the interviews are Jamie Little, Shannon Spake, Vince Welch and Dave Burns.

The pre-race show is thirty minutes and then the NASCAR on ESPN team takes the air. Jerry Punch, Dale Jarrett and Andy Petree will handle the live action.

Last night, ESPN started the night off with a great pre-race show for the Nationwide Series race. Bestwick handed the race off to announcer Marty Reid and the action began on a great note. The first thirty minutes consisted of wideshots of racing, aerial views of the speedway and interviews with drivers out of the race.

Then, ESPN turned the page and started down the road fans know all too well. Extremely tight shots of one or two cars. Recorded soundbites played back during the live race under the green flag. Bizarre oldies music blaring while the announcers threw to commercial. It was the same bad dream again for NASCAR fans.

Marty Reid and Dale Jarrett repeatedly told the producer and director that there was "three wide action further back in the pack." It did not matter. Stories like Mike Bliss and Dave Blaney carving their way through the field were poorly covered.

It was all Sprint Cup drivers all the time. It has been that way since Daytona with the exception of the short-track race this summer from Indy.

On this Saturday night it should be interesting to see if ESPN learns from the Friday night struggles or just repeats the same TV production pattern. One thing is for sure, we will all learn the answer to that together.

I have just about had it with this race coverage. Plenty of other stuff to do, all of it more fun. Night gang.

42 is interesting to listen to during this...some real chatter on his channel..

Amol said...

More JPM on scanner: "If I hit the fence can I fix it?" Spotter back to him: "No, that might knock it down onto the tire."

rich said...

JPM about to go a lap down from fender damage

Charlie said...

JPM just asked if he should brush the wall with the right rear to help make that fender better.
They said no, it make push in so much it cuts a tire.

Sally said...

Thanks rich.

The Loose Wheel said...

lol JPM's radio is funny. but they are the slowest thing out there. telling juan when they pit they will fix it better than new

Hope Jr doesn't fall out of the top 35 in points.

@Sally, you're welcome

Sophia said...

BSPN mentions Vickers but not hitting the 55 jackman?

R U KIDDING ME? time to turn on PRN again I guess

Amol said...

Just before Gordon passed JPM, this was JPM's spotter: "24 is in your mirror, he's the one that caused all of this."

Anonymous said...

Who told Jeff & Mark they could change the script on that last restart??

bevo said...

Just wondering - does NASCAR draw the short straw for director and producer assignments at ESPN?

Sally said...

I like the mentality of JPM, willing to scrape the wall to try and fix it! What happened to mikey?

Charlie said...

JPM is good on twitter to.

Anonymous said...

I guess Michael Waltrip is 3 laps down for an unscheduled pit stop. Anyone know?

Tripp said...

Time for Jacques Debris to make an appearance. JPM in the lucky dog spot.

Jonathan said...

Jr on jackstands wonderfull!!! Theres a lot of empty seats tonight that sucks. Go Kasey Kahne!!!!and JP

Amol said...

JPM now worried that he'll go 2 laps down, was told that he'll go 3 laps down if they pit and that they need a caution. JPM replies later to tell his crew to tell him when he's 10 seconds from going another lap down.

J_Fellenbaum said...

Sally, his jackman got hit on pitroad, so he had to wait for him to get back up and finish the stop..we don't know how injured he is from ESPN, but Mikey had to wait on his injured member and lost a lap, plus he had just went a lap down before his stop

Patrick said...

Junior's on his way back to the track after transmission replaced.

Sally said...

If problems continue for the #42 and #5, Nascar will have a runaway for tne title very soon.

98 pit stop...good times.........

TexasRaceLady said...

Oh, Lord help me, a crew-cam during green flag racing.

They're playing with their toys again. Helmet cam for the pit stop for moving chicane Menard.

Newracefan said...

You a f,,,, kidding me full screen pit stop for the 98 during green flag. WTH

bevo said...

Must not make joke about Jr and a tranny... must not... :)

Beating A Dead Horse said...

Cool, cover a pitstop fullscreen under green, and it is not relevant to the race.

Anonymous said...

Helmet cam during green flag racing. Someone needs to take their toys so they are forced to cover the race.

Sally said...

Thanks guys. If it weren't for you, I would have no idea what was happening in this race. Didn't realize Mikey had to wait for the poor jackman! Still no mention of it from the booth.

Haus14 said...

pure foolishness...we see the stinkin' tire change every single race...and every single time it is during green flag racing...does ESPN have something against showing green flag racing? they seem to try their best to do everything in their power to show everything but the race...and here we go with more green flag commercials.

Karen said...

At least helmet cam not a ham like last night's guy.

Newracefan said...

That was impressive, JPM!

Amol said...

JPM just before his spin: "I'm going to start running the bottom, I don't care if I wreck"

Daly Planet Editor said...

Lost laps regardless. That's why Juablo didn't come in earlier.

Need a caution? Be the caution.

Anonymous said...

Jerry Punch - He would not get the lucky dog because he is not the first car a lap down, not because he brought out the caution.

Tripp said...

I'm generally not smart enough to second guess a Cup crew chief, but JPM's just lost the race for him by leaving him out there that long in a wounded race car.

bevo said...

Good Lord!

Anonymous said...

Triple pits fail. Missed the battle off pit road and a lead change.

Anonymous said...

why didnt JPM just pit after spin?

The Loose Wheel said...

tripp, they were going to lose a ton more laps by pitting. they are only 2 down now, green flag stop plus repairs is 5 laps easy.

brian pattie said screw the 24 and company, they &&&&ed it up for them anyways

bevo said...

@Tripp- Try the championship. He can kiss it goodbye now.

Amol said...

JPM didn't pit when he spun on pit road because his team was telling him to just go through on pit road to stay in front of the leader. NASCAR didn't see it that way, and told him to slow down to get behind the pace car.

Sally said...

He didn't clear the commitment cone during his spin? Bad call by Brian Pattie to leave him out. that's a shame.

Anonymous said...

Anon @ 9:35 - JPM was trying to beat the leader to the line to stay just 1 lap down. JPM didn't make it in time.

The Loose Wheel said...

the montoya penalties mean nothing, they fell 2 laps down since they couldnt maintain caution speed when the caution came out. end of longest line, 2 laps down. tehey can get it back.

Tripp said...

@david... That's why I said I'm not smarter than they are. But, a quick stop for some bearer bond and new Mr. Feelgoods could have made him faster for all those laps.

@bevo... probably right.

red said...

hey gang! i've read thru the comments while half-watching/listening to the race on tv and i have to say this:
i have NO freakin' idea what is going on.
none whatsoever.

it simply can't be this difficult to broadcast a race. it just can't be.

MikeC said...

Sheesh....do they have to compare everything in NASCAR to a football game?

Sally said...

A fired up JPM could be lots of fun to watch. Gordon may want to watch his rearview.

Patrick said...

MikeC
yes. Jr is down by 4 TDs.

Anonymous said...

so basically JPM should have pitted when he spun - been at end of longest line and two laps down - not much different

they messed up

Anonymous said...

Welcome back Red :)

The Loose Wheel said...

tripp, it wouldnt have held up. they needed to put a whole new right rear on it which they did. tape would have cost them time and did zero to help the handling.

pattie did the right thing, juan got frustrated and spun out. he was panicking and made a mistake. i back brian pattie 100% here

JPM's team not going to fix the fender that fell off, trying to get a wave-around to get back to 1 lap down, and then fight for the lucky dog. JPM isn't really buying it on the radio.

The Loose Wheel said...

Pattie tells Juan stay out and get the wave around. Juan asks without a QP?! Pattie says right rear tire was going flat and there were multiple issues that run. They did straighten the original before putting the new piece on so they have sold Juan on staying out to wave around for only being a lap down.

This is going to be interesting.

Still no word if they have the stuff to fabricate a new RR QP or not

It's like the gopher cam. Some producer somewhere who knows nothing about racing decides that it gives a 'unique' perspective of racing. Too ignorant to realize it is guaranteed to piss off race fans because, like most of the ;perspective' shots, it totally ignores the racing. Focusing on the trivial is their strong point.

#1 The angle of the camera is off. Should be tilted down a bit further so you see what the tire carrier is actually looking at, not 5 inches above that.

#2 It should be on a jack man, or changer, so you see some action.
Possibly on a catch can man, but only show it if hes doing a adjustment.

@sally... Sort of. I'll skip the spots but I'm doing other stuff online or working. I'll look up when I hear something interesting. If I don't hear something interesting in 5 or 10 laps I'll fast forward 50 laps. That's my ADD.
