Live Blogging The All-Star Night From CMS (7PM - SPEED)

This is the only night where Sprint Cup Series cars race on SPEED. The network carried the Gatorade Duels in February, but the All-Star race is the big deal.

Since this is not on FOX, it will be Krista Voda hosting the telecast from the Hollywood Hotel with Jeff Hammond and Darrell Waltrip. Once things get underway, Waltrip will join Mike Joy and Larry McReynolds in the broadcast booth for the coverage.

One big challenge of the evening is keeping viewers informed of the format and the schedule of the various events. So many things are very different in this win or crash style of format.

Steve Byrnes, Matt Yocum and Dr. Dick Berggren are covering pit road and will have the tall task of trying to explain the wildly varied strategies that teams use in this event. Pit road has always been a very interesting place on this night.

Joy has been dealing with a very emotional Waltrip this season on TV. From his amazing outburst at Daytona during the final laps through his flip-flops on issues concerning race winners and strategy, Waltrip seems to be trying to please everyone. That just does not work on TV.

On this night, action happens quickly and there are usually several stories in progress at once. It will be tough to continue to use the very tight single and double car shots mixed with in-car cams that has become the NASCAR on FOX trademark.

Voda's star is on the rise with SPEED and FOX. Her performance tonight on a very big stage may go a long way toward determining what her future brings. The FOX head honcho David Hill is now also in charge at SPEED. It should be interesting to see if Voda eventually heads onto having a presence in other high-profile events on FOX.

This post will serve to host your comments on the All-Star coverage on SPEED. To add your TV-related comment, just click on the comments button below. This is a family-friendly website, please keep that in mind when posting. Thanks for dropping by.

I am not sure jokes about how filthy rich all these guys are is going to resonate with the NASCAR fan base, many of whom are struggling in this economy.

I'm bored with this race!! Maybe the Showdown was just too exciting, though it got single file strung out at the end.

Has CMS installed new lighted billboards, Speed, Zmax etc at the top of the stands or are they temporary to cover seating that is not being used?

I still use FFox but have MANY issues with it. IT's upgrades have been horrible & too much junk in the trunk for the program. It was much more problem free years ago. Some puter geeks like Chrome better but I can't take the spinning adds & harder to enlarge the fonts.

I've had horrible conflicts as have others with FFox upgrades & have turned off the updates ..when something gets messed up, do a restore to before the latest update!

Upgrades rarely mean improvements. How about showing more than two or three cars on the tv.

Need to get the rest of my dinner or something. We had Three ways for dinner.

Sophia,
Barry makes the calls, Artie gives the cameras operators their direction.
But--it's Barry that is ultimately responsible and then he will blame the bad stuff on everyone else.
I just had to listen to them cussin and fighting on the headset all the time.
Help me out on this JD. I didn't hang out in the truck as I was too busy with my own deal.

TVtrucker said...

Hey Anon, do they have the internet in S.C. yet?
Just kidding, I live there too.

Daly Planet Editor said...

It's a partnership, but clearly this is how FOX has chosen to cover the sport this season.

I did a mercy killing on the FOX race chat from Dover after not seeing or hearing anything on the entire field except the first four cars for over twenty laps.

They paid the money, they can cover it anyway they want. It does not mean fans will watch.

Andrew said...

RB's been working much better since switching to IE. (I'm in Tallahassee, and using Comcast.)

Anonymous said...

Darn dial up again

Sophia said...

I have Firefox and even with adblocker OFF I could not get RB to play. I switched to Chrome and it loaded right up no problem!! I find Chrome a great "back up"browser but still haven't figured out how to utilize it yet...hard to read the smaller text & tired of enlarging each page.

But RB working for me in Ohio

Jimbacca said...

Racebuddy works fine in chrome on my work laptop.

Coverage is all over. Which sponsifier car won?

Andrew said...

@JD - Just out of curiosity, are you planning to host a chat for the Indy 500? I ask because I have a feeling that the Coca-Cola 600 chat may suffer the same fate as Dover's.

Anonymous said...

TY Andrew--I missed his tweet went to go find it :)

No RaceBuddy probs here! TWC, W7, FF 3.6.3 several windows open, Twitter going plus streaming

Anonymous said...

it definitely feels like there aren't as many sold elements in this show.

Sally said...

Fox doesn't help themselves either. They hype these races up so much that it would be impossible to live up to expectations. Add the lusy camera work, and they aren't going to grab many 'new' fans. Heck, they're driving away most of us 'old' ones.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Anon 9:51PM, it's the SPEED cable TV ad rotation and not the FOX broadcast rotation.

Daly Planet Editor said...

It's fundamental. They just cannot stay wide to give us perspective. It's embarrassing.

We all saw the truck race. It makes a huge difference.

Anonymous said...

9:51 here again- Think that's why Mike Joy seems to be more on top of it? He can just deal with racing and not a different promo or something every 3 minutes?

Andrew said...

*sigh*

Mike Joy is done. This is a bog-standard FOX race now.

I think that I shall be watching only one race next week. And it's not the one being hosted by this crew.

Opened Race Buddy on the wife's new emachine netbook when the first segment started. I'm really impressed with the little computer, and I'm wireless.
I've not had one sputter since the races started.
Happy with Turner and emachine.
Not jumping for joy about the tv broadcast.
TOO MANY IN CAR CAMS!!!

TVtrucker said...

Wow, Barry almost missed the pit entry's.

Darcie said...

Sorry, but if this is going to be another JJ runaway, I'm going to watch something else. This domination is really getting old. Why can't the others keep up with the 48?

OSBORNK said...

So far, this race doesn't feel at all special. It looks and feels like a typical Fox disaster.

MikeC said...

By the time the checkered flag waves, DW should have who's going to be tough to beat down pat.

Anonymous said...

actually i thought they showed it well from the blimp... wide, and you saw what happened....

Darcie said...

BTW, Ms Go Daddy is losing her luster. She cried about how bad her car was for Indy qualifying and she's in something like 16th place in the IRL. Should be an interesting return to Nationwide. Maybe Scott Goodyear was right---you can't do both series and not have a negative effect on each of them.

TVtrucker said...

Darcie, two words is why.
Chad and creative engineering.
OK maybe three words.

Darcie said...

OsbornK, I agree with you. This race is absolutely nothing special. Same old, same old.

MikeC said...

This race always gets over-hyped. All we can hope for is the sparks fly during the final 10 lap segment.

longtimeracefan said...

Same sub-par race coverage from Fox, but all in all, a pretty good race.

Will try to ignore the coverage, and just focus on the racing.

The drivers are putting on a good show, but the Fox guys suck as usual.

Darcie said...

TVtrucker, by creative do you mean Cheatin' Chad??????

MikeC said...

They always tease us about how the drivers will let it all hang out and talk about how great the All-Star races have been....but the footage we see of the great All-Star races were those that were run some 20 or so years ago.

TVtrucker said...

Darcia, sure you can if you can drive.
Looking good ain't driving good.

Andrew said...

@Mike - I don't think it's the race that's overhyped, I think it's the track. Charlotte is the home track, but the Budweiser Shootout always produces more excitement than the All-Star Race.

TVtrucker said...

Darcia, it ain't cheating until you get caught.

Sally said...

I've had enough. I'm sure I can find something to do that will keep my attention. See ya later guys.

Will save my viewing for Indy 500. NASCAR ain't worth 600 miles of &^%$*#( camera work.

Though ABC camera work leaves something to be desired (WAY too much wife cam towards the end) Please show your SUPPORT for IRL and watch it. Many don't get Versus but all get ABC.

Course, years ago I forget who, but I hear Robin Miller say they either missed a major Indy pass for lead or crossing of finish line due to showing a wife on camera.

Still it's HISTORY & you can watch online if sitting outside on nice day :-D

Anonymous said...

Not gonna watch the 600 -Indy is it that day here & I'll do thumb calisthenics if the radio sounds good & leaderboards agree. The yopes ain't getting me to watch the snooze fest, not even on tape. I can get better coverage reading about it

Anonymous said...

JD, that's what I saw most of the last segment. Static low angle shots, superwide shots showing the distance but I couldn't figure out what cars were in it because it was so far away and I'm watching on a 52" LCD. You can expect them to really create something out of nothing. Seems like no one is getting scoops on twitter tonight either (or aren't sharing them on here). Is it not possible that they are just showing us the race they are given like TVTrucker said?

TVtrucker said...

Sure JD, but there is nothing happening on the track. What do you all expect them to show in the pits? Hammond and his toys?
You cannot create the excitement on the track when there is none.

The Loose Wheel said...

This race is EXACTLY like last year, it ain't a race till this last segment anyways.

We'll see.

Darcie said...

I agree with others---I'll watch Indy and pass on the 600. If that race is going to be nothing but straight line racing with the 48 running away with it, why bother. And then you're going to have the crappy Fox coverage, and that spells BORING

slander q. libel said...

Wait... this was listed as a race? I thought it was "Yip-Yap TV" with close-up shots of cars on a track? That's what I tuned in for -- three mentally unbalanced bobble-heads jabbering randomly, about nothing in particular. Aside, of course, for those few moments of rare silence when, after waxing orgasmic about Kyle, Denny or , they are focused on replacing their super-absorbent booth-chair towels...

Charlie said...

Watching the aerial screen on RB is use for tight shots to and that is a shame. It would be great following 10 close cars in a wide shot.

MikeC said...

Going to listen to both the Indy 500 and the 600 next Sunday on the radio.....going to grill out and spend the day listening to 1100 miles of racing, as long as the weather is good in Indy, Charlotte and here at home.

TVtrucker said...

Some of you folks are coming down on our sport when it's the presenter that's the issue.

Vicky D said...

Lucky for us Speed didn't show the tech center describing a carberator change!

Jimbacca said...

It can't be both. It can't be the race and then the presenter. Either / or.

Anonymous said...

Tonight it is the race that is just plain boring. In every single shot they are strung out and single file through the entire field.

I've seen every all star race since 92 and this is by far the worst and it has nothing to do with the TV coverage for me.

MikeC said...

This 4 tire stop before they go green could go a long ways to determining things....time for the guys to bring it home.

Andrew said...

@TVTrucker - You're right that FOX is a large part of the problem. But I've been to the Coke 600 several times and it's just not a great race. The COT simply does not make for good racing on the 1.5-mile tracks. The All-Star Race's first three segments are the Coke 600 in microcosm, as nobody wants to risk tearing their cars to pieces.

TVtrucker said...

This next segment will be a thriller! Stay tuned race fans!

The Loose Wheel said...

exactly tv, this is par for this race anymore. nothing happens until the last segment.

Daly Planet Editor said...

TV trucker,

I could not disagree more. Cars running at speed at CMS are a spectacle. That is why fans attend and we watch.

NASCAR has a long history of having dominant cars, not passing on every lap.

The entire approach of blaming the lack of passing for bad TV is BS in my world.

These boys make hundreds of thousands of dollars a year and I want them to work as hard as the drivers.

Most of the stories the drivers are relating were never reported by FOX. No in-car radios. Horrible camera selection.

This has been the story of the FOX season. Let's blame NASCAR while we stay at the Ritz Carlton, play golf and book an early flight

The truck and NNS coverage has been blowing FOX out of the water with a much less racey product on the track.

Just like any other job, hard work has a reward. Just my opinion.

Anonymous said...

@TVtrucker - not coming down on our sport. Sick of this batch of presenters, lousy camera shots and their abuse of fans time & intelligence. We have been fans for 3+ decades, not gonna quit being a fan, just not watching slop. There is a difference

TVtrucker said...

Andrew, you are correct. The 600 is over-hyped to sell tickets and Bruton is the best at hype.
A real race is Daytona Talladega bristol, Darlington and?????
Fox has to deal with it and try to make a bore exciting.

Jimbacca said...

Not the race, not the talent.
And not Artie.

The Loose Wheel said...

YEAH!!!!!! HELL YES!!!!! JGR!!!

I'm stoked now.

TVTrucker, lets get ready for a show!

Soloman said...

Hey all - been reading along with the commentary for a while now.

TVtrucker = thanks for bringing some sanity to this group. You've said it exactly right - JJ and Chad are simply a cut above. He's the best at his job, and like it or not, people - JJ can drive, as he proved when this race started and he tore through the field.

It's up to the rest of the field to figure out how to catch up - Seems Hamlin has done a decent job of it tonight - maybe he'll give JJ a run for his money.

Everyone who's complaining - I've been checking out the free Race Buddy, and it's the showing basically the same camera shots as Speed is offering. I'm not sure what you expect - when there was something interesting to offer, this crew certainly had it on the screen, but there's only so much they can do.

Plus - this is a race that's all about the winner and points don't matter, so I don't care what's going on in 15th place. They kept us up on Hamlin and Keslowski climbing through the field when that was happening.

TVtrucker said...

And I forgot about the real gopher that digs down in hole.
David Hill------

The Loose Wheel said...

TV, I think that is what JD is saying. The network's presentation of the race is the problem, NOT the race itself, not the cars, not the drivers

The Loose Wheel said...

I concur, hope no one skipped this segment. This race is always a snooze until the last few laps. Very few exceptions. The only part of last year everyone remembers is the final segment.

Bummer for Mark there. good angles capturing it, BAD analysis

Daly Planet Editor said...

Lots of folks been here talking about NASCAR TV. Everyone has an opinion. That is all you need to remember.

Just because you and I happened to work in TV, our opinions are not more valuable than anyone else.

That's all. OK?

Andrew said...

And that is the story of Mark's season so far, captured in one restart.

I think he must have gotten an advance on this year's luck for last year's season.

longtimeracefan said...

If the Fox coverage is not up to whatever subjective standards that fit a particuliar perspective, as has been driven into the ground hard by TDP majority the past few months, so be it.

This is a good (show), regardless of the presentation.

They're too busy twisting themselves around trying to keep from blaming any of their favorite (Toyota) drivers -- same as always.

This is what Kyle and JG asked about in the driver's meeting.

They wanted to know if the leader or the flagman was going to restart.

Guess we got our answer.

The Loose Wheel said...

Coaching up Denny to where starter has dropped the flag.

Long night, hope this holds together to the end. DW has been all over the board on his strategies, lines, etc.

Anonymous said...

the real problem with the 600, is that it is 600 miles, there won't be racing until the last 100 miles..they need to either shorten the races or some sort of incentive to want to be racing the whole race.

Daly Planet Editor said...

slander,

Could you believe DW on that? He just could not bring himself to sort it out. That was just weird.

Anonymous said...

Wow! JD not sure what Trucker said to set you off, but whoa buddy we all know the work you put into this and appreciate it, But I think he has had some pretty good points and he has every right to disagree with you and express it even on your blog if you are gonna open the blog up for opinions.

Thanks to both of you and keep on expressing!

slander q. libel said...

There's nothing wrong with "the show" when "the show" means the race. When "the show" means whatever random thoughts pop up in the booth monkeys' heads, then there is a problem with "the show."

Daly Planet Editor said...

If the Indy guys put on a good show, the 600 is going to be rough.

The Loose Wheel said...

JD, I saw it as everyone trying to gun the start, Joey got in the grass then skated up. Saying the 1 or the 48 or whoever hit Mark and all that was overkill. Joey was racing for a million bucks and made a mistake.

my 2 cents on it

Jimbacca said...

Racebuddy is sponsored by BK today isnt it?

Some of the opinions tonight are interesting
One post .. .It's not the truck is the racing. How can the truck show something that isn't there... Next post same person the truck is making the racing look bad.

The booth analysis is wow tonight. You are a looking at replays like the rest of us and not getting it right. 10 replays later you get closer to the right answer. When there is action it takes them a while to get it right.
