Live Blogging Indy 500 (12PM - ABC)

Every year we live blog the Indy 500 because there is simply nothing else like it. Over the past several years the event has seen its ups and downs, but this year the race has come roaring back into the global spotlight.

ABC goes on the air at 12PM ET with a fast-paced one hour pre-race show. Unlike NASCAR, this program is actively coordinated with IndyCar and contains several elements including live driver introductions.

Here is what ESPN put out to the media about the coverage:

Brent Musburger hosts the telecast, while Marty Reid will call the race with analysis by former IZOD IndyCar Series star Scott Goodyear and 1998 Indy 500 winner Eddie Cheever. Reporting from the pits will be Rick DeBruhl, Jamie Little, Dr. Jerry Punch and Vince Welch.

ESPN will use 59 cameras to televise the race fully in high definition, including a 360-degree rotating onboard camera mounted behind the driver on multiple cars. Unique views will be provided by Track Cam, a high definition camera running on a cable over pit road and the frontstretch that can move at more than 80 mph. All 33 cars will carry GPS boxes for the Sportvision RaceFX system to provide telemetry and pointers to help identify the cars for viewers. And ESPN will use a radio replay system that can record, playback and edit radios from any of the 33 drivers.

The one-hour pre-race show will include interviews with many of the 33 starting drivers as well as special features, including a look at the up-and-down past year of polesitter and defending race winner Helio Castroneves, from beating tax evasion charges to winning Indy to becoming a father. Ryan Hunter-Reay is featured in an ESPN Sports Science piece comparing driving an IndyCar to flying a fighter jet and drivers who have and have not won at Indy talk about the Blueprint for Success at the famous track. ABC Good Morning America host Robin Roberts, the pace car driver for the Indy 500, conducted a unique sit-down interview with Danica Patrick that will appear both on GMA and in the pre-race show and another feature looks back on ABC’s 46 years at Indy with on-camera interviews with some of the iconic announcers who were part of the history. The telecast also will include a Memorial Day tribute salute to veterans.

ESPN International’s networks and syndication of the Indy 500 will reach more than 252 million households. In addition, U.S. troops serving overseas and on Navy vessels around the world will watch via a broadcast agreement between ESPN and the American Forces Network, bringing the total to 213 countries and territories.

How about that for an attention-getter? ESPN's NASCAR team plays a prominent role in this special live event. Punch returning to Indy for the first time in many years is a great story. Marty Reid has also been putting in solid work on the NASCAR trail and he is tuned-up for this one.

Indy is a mix of strategy, luck and skill. Racing is done on the straightaways and simple mistakes can cause disaster in the corners. Translating this to TV has always been a challenge. Wideshots down the straights have served to be the most efficient camera angle for decades. Restarts in this series often tell the tale.

This post will serve to host your comments about the ABC coverage of the Indy 500. To add your comment, just click on the comments button below. This is a family-friendly website, please keep that in mind when posting. Thanks for taking the time to stop by The Daly Planet.

Well Andrew, that is a very good point. ;-)

Well the engine is a smaller cubic inch so their wide open is different than NASCAR's, you can run wide open but you need just about clean air and an ideal handle to do it. It's pretty on the edge to go wide open but yes I do believe they have a rev limiter, also the gear ratios help keep the speeds down

Anonymous said...

believe i have seen versus show the amount of ptp's left..

Anonymous said...

Unless I'm mistaken, these Honda engines are essentially the same naturally aspirated V8 engines that previously were called Chevrolet engines because they're the Ilmor Engineering product.

Ken-Michigan said...

as the great Ken Squier once said in respect to the fast speeds and dangerous nature of motorsports....

"There's always Tennis" !!

Dan Wheldon had the entire right side of the back stretch to get around Rahal.... Wheldon chose the grass !!

Anonymous said...

Shirley, you assume i don't know the issues behind the rule, trust me I do. I also realize that they have been able to race at Indy for years without the rule. Remember the days when the compeitors would police themselves, ibeleive one series just want back to that. What I i am saying is to let the drivers deal with each other, not some dude watching from the stands.

red said...

@john and shirley: irl cars are simply too aero reliant to permit the sort of blocking that's been getting blackflagged today. at these speeds, they don't have reaction time that, say, stock cars have. in addition, when an irl car gets squirrely, it often spins and nails a wall.

of course, irl is cracking down on it bigtime today, which is not what one usually sees at an irl race. and that, in turn, is confusing to racers so (coming fll circle) we're seeing more black falgs.

but racers at this level know how dangerous blocking is and know the penalty and they were "reminded" of it again today. so there is no excuse, especially since they've been calling it all race long.

Unknown said...

You would think they could get better audio coverage of the driver and pit. That audio is horrible, can barely understand what anyone said.

JS said...

I agree about the blocking penalties being stupid. I understand that there's the risk of the aero causing a wreck & the margin for error is much less in the IRL, but if you're leading on the last lap, about to get passed, are you supposed to just let second place go by? (And if you do block to defend the win, do you get a penalty & lose the race?)

Andrew said...

Good grief, does anyone know what Dario was saying there?

Anonymous said...

Just looking into the engines . . . I totally forgot the fact that Roger Penske bought the special projects unit of Ilmor a few years ago.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Nice interview from Vitor. Stand up guy.

Charlie said...

I don't usually watch Indy car and was wondering if this is considered a well done broadcast?

I don't think it is that great but I have little to compare to except Nascar and that is a whole different race.

bevo said...

Just go to YouTube and search "IRL crashes" and "CART crashes" to understand why you don't block or make contact with an open-wheel car.

Anonymous said...

I imagine that the only person who would get a black flag for a blocking penalty and lose the race would be Scott Goodyear.

Andrew said...

Better job on the pit stops.

Not too impressed with this booth. Marty Reid is good as always, but neither of these other two are doing much for me.

red said...

i'm kinda amazed with how "frank and forthright" the guys are being today in post-wreck interviews. and i do not miss the sponsor recitation moment at all.

i'm also noticing the PxP work.

oh no! an in-car driver interview attempt w/TK! please do NOT let that be the kiss of death for him!

bevo said...

@JD- Agree about Meira, wish the guy had some luck. I don't think there's anyone who doesn't like him.

stand up guy?

Well, that's just cruel. He's standing because he wrecked his car.
I know, I know. bad yuk-yuk.

Cheever should just bite his tongue about Sheckter

Don said...

The Move Over flag has been a fixture in auto racing for decades. If a backmarker is holding up someone much faster, then they need to move over. If someone is about to get lapped, they are obviously not running fast enough. Forcing someone into the grass just to pass you is stupid.

The Loose Wheel said...

Brent talking out of his you know what again...

Ken-Michigan said...

When are these networks going to stop trying this "in car communication" ??

Sure, its cool when it works... but year after year, time after time, wires get crossed and it doesnt work.

I know it works sometimes, but if you are going to make it part of the telecast.... it better work 90% of the time.

red said...

i'm also noticing (oh shut up, brent!) that no one in the booth is pontificating about how he would be running the track or what a racer should be doing or what a racer is thinking right now . . .

"right behind him, another car!" what? seriously? how about identifying WHO that "other car" was?

Andrew said...

*sigh*

In-car cameras? Haven't they learned anything from NASCAR about how that just doesn't work on passes?

Anonymous said...

you know there are some also runs doing well when the annoners cant even put a name to the cars when they are passing someone. LOL

Daly Planet Editor said...

Folks saying great things about the IndyCar.com multiple camera feeds.

They are free to view!

Anonymous said...

I can see a real close finish with the headline: "Tony Kanaan Wins By A Nose!" :)

Don said...

That Indy Lights replay in side-by-side was confusing. I knew what it was, but a casual viewer would be confronted by similar looking cars driven by names they hadn't heard before.

Correct me if I'm wrong...

Who gets the victory lane interview ??? Punch or Welch ?

So, I have RaceDay in P-i-P, and when I swapped during commercial, there was a P-i-P-i-P that I couldn't even read the text. 32"

Daly Planet Editor said...

They are thin on pit road for sure.

Anonymous said...

Yes the Indycar site is awesome. Real time leaderboards, various incars you can follow and you can even do a "compete" view where you pick 2 drivers and compare them side by side. And if they both have an incar camera you can see that from there too <3

Anonymous said...

Dario's comments sure sounds like those from a guy who is just playing with the field. did I mention that I can't stand stupid announcer that talk out of there arses like DW and CHEEVER!!!!

bevo said...

JD - Saw your bro Thursday, blue and white pants. Played great and crowd was loving it.

The pink is for Colonial's breast cancer awareness this weekend re: Amy Mickelson. Phil didn't cooperate though :)

Daly Planet Editor said...

Cheever is like DW. He has some many conflicting agendas he winds-up sounding like a fool.

Anonymous said...

HOLY CRAP, THEY BROKE OUT OF COMMERCIAL FOR A CRASH!!!!

Fox is soooo screwed tongiht....

Patrick said...

Did he apologize for interrupting commercials? Seriously?

By the way 8-Viso is OUT, too (Handling). Don't know why they wouldn't mention that at the same time.

Daly Planet Editor said...

That is why they do the side-by-side, they break out all the time when something happens.

It really keeps viewers watching the commercials rather than channel surfing with the remote.

Anonymous said...

OMG did he really apoligize for it??? I was is such shock when it came back on that I didnt hear what he said.

to funny but just GREAT to see it is possible to break out of commercials. I started to wonder if airplanes would have to crash into buildings during a race for that to happen

Dannyboy said...

Cheever is like DW. He has some many conflicting agendas he winds-up sounding like a fool.

Eddie sounded like a fool when he was a driver; he's always had only one agenda: appearing smarter than everyone else.

Don said...

The possibility of the last place car winning the race is amazing, but these days it would even more astounding if the race winner wasn't Penske/Ganassi. Go Tony!

Just remember, the leader with 10 laps to go is almost never the winner.

it's called "respect for the viewer/fan," something nascar lacks.

Had to take a break, cuz dad stopped by, who knows nothing about motorsports.

I thought getting comments from fans that know what they are talking about was rough.

My 90 year old father even realized what was being 'said on TV' was not what he saw.

Bummer for @NicoleMBriscoe & Ryan. Need to let her know on twitter.

Shirley Buttacavoli said...

Oh yeah, thanks Michael for reminding me about Push To Pass.

I really don't like graphics and all that stuff during a race, but some kind of 'graphic' would be nice so we see when Marco uses his 10+ PTP.

you knwo what would be cool, have Monaco in the morning, Indy 500 during the day, then the NHRA at ZMax doing the four wide drag racing. Come up with some unique format for them that lets everyone run 4 to 5 times then a couple 2 out of three 4 wide passes for the trophy. Then have Marty pull the double annoucing! If you realy want to spice it up, throw in a indoor supercross event at Texas or Vegas. Run the first half of the drags to set the finals, then supercross, then the drag finals.

that would be MUCH better thanhe NASCAR snoosefest coming tonight

I think I would enjoy that more than the 600 these days.

Don said...

How many portraits does the Borg-Warner Trophy have room for? I know it's big, but I'm surprised it hasn't been filled yet.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Dannyboy, why do you think SPEEE2 is coming along as an online channel of international and sports car racing?

Because FOX has deeeeep pockets and Jim does not.

Dannyboy said...

All they email you is IZOD series stuff.

They always do that for safety. You cannot pass until the start line, but they are told it's a green earlier than NASCAR.

can you say guy out front stays there

I really don't want to see Franchitti win. Why?

As I said earlier, I'm really dreading the obligatory Ashley Judd interview of poetic drama.

"I'm just SO THRILLED about the amazing efforts of the team today...Dario is WONDERFUL...and it was just a beautiful, enthralling effort by the team." as she wraps herself in the Scottish flag.

DW will be sure to tell us that Dario's NASCAR experience is what gave him the edge to win the 500.

But this was not really THAT weird a finish IMO, having watched since the 60s.

Now time for a break & to re-group for the 600. L8R G8Rs

Very uneven telecast today. Nice wide shots coming at us and great replays. Just doesn't work with ESPN doing a couple of races and Versus doing the rest.

Pit reporters were fine and play-by-play was solid. I like Goodyear as an analyst but could do without Cheever.

red said...

anon@4:29: actually, some of us have commented on her 5th place finsih as "attrition" over on twitter.

just sayin' . . .

Andrew said...

This broadcast was rather choppy.

Marty Reid seemed lost without AB and DJ. There were many points where you could tell he was expecting Cheever or Goodyear to chime in like those two do, but they either didn't speak or said something odd. And Marty himself made several mistakes.

Dr. Punch was fantastic, as usual. And he seems to be rubbing off on Jamie Little and Vince Welch.

The camera work seemed to be half-and-half. Sometimes there were fantastic shots, and action caught quite clearly on camera. Other times, we were treated to single-car shots and in-car cameras for passes.

Side-by-side is nice to have. And they broke out of commercial for an accident. (But apologized for it. Um!?) But later, they didn't break out of it. Do they only break out if a star crashes?

We got a rundown of almost everyone on the lead lap, which was very nice. Yes, it came after halfway, and yes, I'd love more of them, but it's still more than FOX has done in awhile.

IndyCar.com's coverage was excellent. RaceBuddy has more cameras, but IndyCar has the radio broadcast for free, plus a much larger screen for the camera. And RaceBuddy is only available for eight races. It's too bad that NASCAR's gotten themselves into such a hole with internet coverage.

Jerry's medical insight was great in the legend race at Bristol this year after Charlie Glotzbach & Larry Pearson were in their vicious wreck late in the going.

Absolute WORST racing coverage I have ever witnessed... I most certainly did NOT tune in to watch 59.99 minutes of commercials for every hour of the race, nor did I tune in to have the commercials being used to over-ride and upstage the race...

VERY Disappointing...

Unknown said...

Is anyone else thoroughly disgusted with how ABC Sports thoroughly commercialized the event? The volume of commercials (their lovely "Side-by-Side" split screen commercial/race coverage, that they cut away to like it was this wonderful, thoughtful feature of the race) nearly exceeded the volume of actual live race coverage, and that "coverage" had so little thoughtful, intelligent race commentary. I wasn't a NASCAR fan until I began watching FOX's coverage, and it is thorough, intelligent, and very light on commercials. Indy needs help, they lost this long-time fan due to ABC's exploitation of the event.

Anonymous said...

holy crap, the above two posts are obvious shills for Fox, most likely work there. Indy was very good, not perfect but so much better than a Fox nascare race it isn't even funny. I don't think I can watch the 600 as I don't want to be that upset and depressed at the crap fox calls race coverage
