Live Blogging Sprint Cup Series in Pocono (12PM ET TNT)

Here we go with the first of six Sprint Cup Series races on TNT, but the story of Sunday is not the TV network, it is the weather.

Thunderstorms are expected in the area all afternoon and the teams are ready for a very long afternoon. TNT is perhaps the network that may have the toughest time filling a rain delay. They have no other NASCAR programming and if lightning shuts the TV compound down, it may be movie time for NASCAR fans.

It will be Lindsay Czarniak hosting the telecasts from the infield stage with Larry McReynolds. Joining that duo for the pre-race show will be Kyle Petty. McReynolds has the same cutaway car back for this season.

It will be Adam Alexander, Petty and Wally Dallenbach Jr. in the TV booth. This trio worked a session of practice on Saturday and sounded quite good. This is the first time calling play-by-play for Alexander and TNT really took a leap of faith on his selection.

TNT will return the online RaceBuddy application. Jim Noble, veteran PRN reporter, will be the dedicated online pit reporter working only for RaceBuddy users. There will be multiple cameras and online Twitter and social media feeds as well as live chat.

Kyle Petty has lead the way in social media interaction with fans and Adam Alexander told me this week he expects Petty to handle the live tweets in the TV booth. It should be interesting to see how year number two of this direct fan interaction works.

TNT has a history of showing NASCAR in a very different way than FOX. While FOX concentrates on one or two cars and the announcers talk about the video, TNT uses wideshots and follows the racing on the track all the time. Last season, this "old school" approach worked very well for the network.

TNT is integrated with the NASCAR.com website. Each race morning, a member of the TV team will host a live chat with fans. For post-race, the TNT gang will use NASCAR.com for live video coverage and reports.

This post will serve to host your comments and questions about the TNT coverage. To add your comment, just click on the comments button below. This is a family-friendly website, please keep that in mind when posting. Thank you for taking the time to stop by The Daly Planet.

random observation..no sprint commercials or promos today....such a relief

Jonathan said...

lol red! So true yet unreal cant still think thats a joke!

Anonymous said...

is kyle petty twittering like he was last year?

Sally said...

@Anon 5:09..as opposed to the useless babbling that was virtually non stop from DW and Larry Mac? Get real.

Jonathan said...

cant belive it**

The Loose Wheel said...

I think the reporting on S&P is a PXP decision rather than a network one. Reid calls them out, AB not so much, Welch, Alexander, Allen and Joy don't either.

Weber called them out last year too.

Richard in N.C. said...

Really enjoy the RaceBuddy pictures and coverage.

Daly Planet Editor said...

You guys watching RaceBuddy? Have you found it fun or boring today?

Vicky D said...

Me thinks we need another caution to bunch up the field!

The Loose Wheel said...

They are missing the first round of green flag stops

Sally said...

If nothing else, RB is great for watching during commercials. Our very on 'side-by-side'.

The Loose Wheel said...

No caution! Either someone wrecks or blows up, no more phantom cautions!

Daly Planet Editor said...

Well, they have chosen Phil despite his 2 car start and park team, but it must be awkward for him to talk to other Cup folks.

They do not regard him and his operation with the best of opinions. I know all the issues attached, but it's different from Rusty or Brad.

His impact in this race has been minimal, but if one of his assigned cars wins, it might get interesting.

Like the green flag pitstop coverage.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Have you seen the rear bumper cam from Havick on RaceBuddy? Wow.

Anonymous said...

just checked out kyle's twitter last one was 27 may, has he given it up? thought that was one of the cool things last year, had a direct line to the booth..

Vicky D said...

Green flag pit stops were covered great. This track sure has stretched out the cars though. My guy is back some.

red said...

RB is giving me a whole new set of choices and i find i'm using it more than the tv (altho' both are now back under my control.)

* i like the resets being done during commercials by lindsay as well as the pit reports from jim n
* really liking the speed shot from the track camera
* battle cam finds the bets racing and shows it to me
* i rebooted & restored leaderboard: would like to have the lap times & seconds behind as well but i'll take what i have
* flag stand interesting but not really needed. could get a diffrent (non in-car cam!) shot instead (altho' it's fun to watch the camera guy get the shot!)

the camera angles have been magnificent -- altho i'm puzzled as to why we'er been shown the bottom of the helicopter a few times so far!

hope those impressions provide some solid feedback to the RB gang!

Daly Planet Editor said...

Twitter peeps are upset because Lindsay slouches in her chair.

Take all kinds!

Vicky D said...

Red, I'm like you I wish RB leaderboard would show time behind but I am seeing a whole lot more of the racing. I'm waiting for Nascar to throw another debris caution. I do like RB a lot.

Daly Planet Editor said...

I miss the muliple audio scanner feeds, but fans complained because their driver was not among them.

I don't miss the live chat, but prefer the social media type chat they now have running.

Pretty great right now.

Anonymous said...

This is not Phil's first rodeo with Turner.

I discovered the other day some tape of 1986 Winston Western 500 at Riverside. The two-man booth was Ken Squier and Phil Parsons on TBS Sports.

red said...

ok, a negative: don't bother with the "live points" stuff during a race b/c it's irrelevant. if someone really cares, nascar.com has this useless piece of information on their home page during the race.

red said...

OMG. We could be talking about the race or the season, but Alexander, Petty and Dallenbach just spent five minutes repeating context-free cliches and platitudes about the importance of "momentum." Is this a half-assed lecture on sports psychology or a failure of a nascar telecast?

Lou said...

JD asked, "You guys watching RaceBuddy? Have you found it fun or boring today?"

Lovin it and want more of it.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Richard, good suggestions. NASCAR.com also added a live leaderboard on the homepage.

Any other suggestions are welcome, those guys read this on Monday.

I will have a "Your Turn" post up for comments with this is over.

The Loose Wheel said...

Red I don't mind seeing points as they run, the Chase does make it more irrelevant though. I am bothered they feel the need to talk about it though. Just show it on the screen, just because it's there you don't HAVE to talk about it.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Platitudes....we don't get that too much around here.

Anonymous said...

Well, one good thing....we don't have to put up with the Bill Webber Marty Snyder spats anymore.

Vicky D said...

Good point Anon at 5:31 PM

bevo said...

@JD- that would be one of them thar $5 words :)

Daly Planet Editor said...

When the media released the story about Weber working as a magician, that really put the whammy on him coming back to NASCAR TV.

Just tooooooo weird.

The Loose Wheel said...

That is a shame. I really liked Weber with ESPN back in the day. He was a great pit reporter, so so play by play.

Vicky D said...

Liked Larry Mac's engine show!

Richard in N.C. said...

I'm really enjoying Jim Noble. I find N.com's Leaderboard far, far superior to FOX Sports' one.

Anonymous said...

Just checking my twitter lists, realized Lindsay sent out a message about an hour ago.

Anonymous said...

Best coverage of the year. but this has to be the worst race of the year. hate that tnt gets the crappy races. espn should get em.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Each of the three TV packages has a "hook."

FOX gets Daytona and then just rides out the string.

TNT gets Daytona on July 4th holiday and 5 crappy races.

ESPN gets the Chase, but has to show the seven races before it.

NASCAR cut up the pie and turned over a billion dollars in rights fees.

Not bad for a day's work.

MikeC said...

An indication of a bad race is when MRN doesn't use their turn announcers as much. This has been one of those races. At the same time, I don't want them throwing a yellow to try and make a bad race a good race.

The Loose Wheel said...

Caution for debris

Anonymous said...

there ya go mike "debries"

Anonymous said...

I have been a Nascar fan for 30 years, but this race is like watching paint dry...I feel for the announcers. I was just going to write...time for a debris caution...when it comes out.

The Loose Wheel said...

JD, that is true and what irks me the most about the television package. I gotta say i preferred what they used to do where no one had a chunk of the season consecutively because it kept all the networks honest. FOX just has no measuring stick, TNT has nothing to lose thus they are more aggressive, and ESPN says "your stuck with us the rest of the season"

Over this package, TNT has been the most consistent because they are the most willing to try new things, learn from FOX's mistakes and let the rough side ride.

Jonathan said...

Theres your debrie everyone. is everyone happy that they showed it

Richard in N.C. said...

One of the real gripes I had with Bill Webber was that the Pocono and Sonoma races are some of the ones I enjoy watching the most.

Anonymous said...

they throw this debris to try to make an exciting ending because now they will have to stop again, most likely under green with 10 laps to go, pure manipulation

Anonymous said...

BTW, just prepped my DVR to record AB's roundtable tommorrow.
Dustin Long, Jeff Gluck, and Jenna Fryer.....should be a good one.

Lou said...

hope we get an update on the 42

The Loose Wheel said...

Montoya feels like he lost front brakes.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Yep, just depends on what the producer picks to let them talk about.

I gave them some topics, none are going to make the cut! LOL!

The Loose Wheel said...

42 crew was checking their rotors, JPM reported he got a massive wheel shake on pit road and felt like the front brakes were gone and he only had rears. Crew added tape and checked the brakes, found nothing abnormal.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Harvick is the in-car and team scanner on RaceBuddy. This is going to get fun.

Jonathan said...

can you change audio for the differnt camera shots JD? didnt know you could hear the scanner??

Daly Planet Editor said...

Jon, last season they tried a limited team scanner with a couple of teams. It was meant to let folks who had not heard live scanner to go and get Trackpass and Raceview.

This season, they dropped it and the only scanner is the team radio from the in-car.

The Loose Wheel said...

you can only hear the scanner when your on the onboard feed.

Montoya going to play the fuel mileage game, going to come in with the lap down cars, try to stretch it. They are warning him to be careful because if they are out front on old tires they are going to get wrecked. Juan doesn't seem to care at this point.

18: 11 laps short

Richard in N.C. said...

Checking about debris is not rocket science. I saw a truck pull out and go down the front stretch after the pace car picked up the field, but I could not see where the truck stopped. I presume if you can follow NASCAR control then you can hear where they have told the truck to go to pick up the debris.

In the highly unlikely event that a Parsons car was to actually try to run an entire race, I wonder how a crew chief would respond late in a race to Parsons' asking about late race strategy?

Ann_Ominous said...

Camera work is great, but the booth leaves some to be desired. Not really much in the way of play by play, just Wally and Kyle rambling. But, this is a race without much racing. NASCAR needs to toss out the gear rule and whatever else so that they can go back to shifting. Racing has sucked since they stoped the shifting.

Anonymous said...

Why dont we write unique rules for some tracks to spice up the action. This is hardly watchable.

The Loose Wheel said...

42 is going to play fuel mileage game, coming back with 1 to go to top off

" And he SET on the pole "
Let's see Did TNT give us one

ALL QUIET .. EXCEPT FOR THE
sounds of the engines ????
Of course not.

Daly Planet Editor said...

TNT is one for two on debris this season. Batting .500!

Vicky D said...

Big storm is here and we lost satellite. Only watching RB, blog & twitter. Was it another debris caution?

Richard in N.C. said...

I happen to enjoy watching the Pocono races, but the best idea I've seen regarding Pocono races was Bob Pockrass' idea last year to put a road course in the infield.

Looks like Conway is extending his run. (The devil made me say that.)

Anonymous said...

Phil Parson's start and park operation is a lot like BP. Evil on one hand, but simply taking advantage of the rules on the other.

MikeC said...

I get the sense they're holding off on the restart of this to set up a situation to see who can make it on fuel and who can't.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Anyone smell a green/white/checkered?

red said...

hmmm. had to shut down RB: despite multiple attempts tp re-boot, it kept freezing. coincidentally (or not), my airport connection kept dropping out here at home so i've decided to shut down RB for this last few laps.

The Loose Wheel said...

Dave Rogers: "You have to save fuel, save save save"

Anonymous said...

Please, please get rid of Larry Mac!!! I just got back to the race and he was who I heard. I had TOO MUCH of him on fox, now your asking me to put of with him again. Whoever made that decision should be fired!

is about to get crazy here

ok, that wedding commercial was funny!!! Boyer as a bridesmaid lol!!

glenc1 said...

would it kill them to do an update on the 1 and whatever make the 6 go up the track like that? I suppose they'll get to it *eventually*....

Daly Planet Editor said...

Little to tight on the leaders for me, let's see how they bring this home visually.

This is crunch time for this crew.

I am not a fan of Adam's dry commentary right now. Rick Allen would be losing a lung.

The Loose Wheel said...

At least there was really debris there. Sucks for Hornish, Montoya and Kurt though

OSBORNK said...

Showed the debris. About time.

Bucky Butler said...

Local MRN affiliate just bailed out of the 24 hours of Pocono with 30 to go. Unbelievable.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Have not heard a lot of AC/DC theme music going into commercial at all.

Anonymous said...

Bad weekend for the pit reporters turned PxP men.

Anonymous said...

That's all fox had to do - show the debris. How hard was that?

MikeC said...

I have to say that Adam's energy has stayed strong. That's what I was concerned with...if he'd be sighing and so forth. By now Jerry Punch would be spent.

Also, thank you TNT for showing who's in the top 5 when going to commercial.

More than a little rough right now. Come on guys.

Time for Adam to take control. Not happening. Come on.

Sophia said...

STOP THE IN CAR CAMS!

SHOW us the race, PLEASE. RBuddy coming in handy...now

Sophia said...

I think the FOX suits just took over the truck :(

Sophia said...

Did Mike Wells leave the booth for dinner? What happened to the wide car shots? :(

Daly Planet Editor said...

Here is some post-race stuff.

Rick Allen and Krista Voda on The Speed Report at 7PM. Update on Simona D. and the IndyCar fire.

Jimmy Spencer with Herminator and Johnny TV at 8PM on Victory Lane.

Robin Miller subs as host on Wind Tunnel. He had Tony Kanaan in the studio as a guest.

The TNT guys are doing an extended post-race live on NASCAR.com once they are off the air.

Whew, enough of that!

Richard in N.C. said...

I love the R-Buddy overheads.

Anonymous said...

Knock on wood, but it sure is nice not having commercials interupt the ending.

Anonymous said...

Put you on the spot here JD.
Adam Alexander or Vince Welch, who do you think had the better go of it this weekend?

bevo said...

I really like Adam but man he has got to work on this play-by-play thing.

Just goes to show why Ken Squire insisted that his guys have experience being track announcers.

Daly Planet Editor said...

That's easy, Rick Allen!

Sally said...

Disappointing that TNT has decided to keep the camera on the leader running way out front. Deja vue.

Anonymous said...

Very diplomatic, JD.

glenc1 said...

bevo...I think they said Adam *was* a track announcer, didn't they?

Daly Planet Editor said...

Who called it? Come on....

The Loose Wheel said...

Joey ALMOST caught it!!!!

longtimeracefan said...

Logano needs to get in Harvick's face after the race for that bonehead move.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Harvick stayed high and just took him out.

Sally said...

That's racin.

Anonymous said...

no way they don't use all 3 GWC's today, and probalby end under yellow for the 3rd.

The Loose Wheel said...

Eh, racing wreck right there....Looked like both guys wanted the same spot and Joey drove it real deep in then stopped.

bevo said...

@glen- He was? My bad then. Sorry.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Going to be interesting to see how TNT covers post-race now...

Richard in N.C. said...

OK, R-Buddy failing = no replay, unless its going on as I comment.

Bucky Butler said...

G-W-C is bush league. This race should be over.

Sophia said...

server crashed with RB..froze up earlier. WAH

MikeC said...

I'd like to have seen how close Hamlin was to taking the white. Reminds me of the race when Gordon was close to taking the white and didn't win.

glenc1 said...

bevo, had to look it up to be sure, but yes...Tristate speedway in Indiana. That said, it's been a while. That's why I would cut him some slack...he can get better, though 6 races isn't going to be easy. And again, this was a slow race & he's still probably working things out with his cohorts.

Charlie said...

3 to 4 wide behind leader and they don't show it.

Sophia said...

WTF?????????

Anonymous said...

Nascar gets the wreck they live for.

OSBORNK said...

Look what happens when they don't call a caution when they should have.

Anonymous said...

What happened there? And what kind of a catch fence is that?

Bucky Butler said...

This rule is going to get someone killed.

MikeC said...

TNT messed up that finish. No drop down or anything to show how they crossed the line.

Daly Planet Editor said...

The legacy of the green/white/checkered.

The Loose Wheel said...

Guys from turn 1 back around there is NO catch fence

Daly Planet Editor said...

Looked like the old Darrell Waltrip and Davey Allison accident.

Anonymous said...

Agreed, that is the legacy...until a driver gets seriously injured or worse. Safety? We dont need no stinkin" safety-- just better ratings.

Anonymous said...

TNT failing to update if Gordon's out yet, RB cameras pulled

Anonymous said...

This is why you don't race back to the line and the field is frozen at the moment of caution.

Also, is there ,much of a catch fence by that shrubbery? Almost looks like years ago at Thompson, CT, when a car jumped the wall and left the track.

Daly Planet Editor said...

They sure got spooked at the end.

Charlie said...

Did they wait to throw the caution until the 11 crossed the line. If so not to safe there.

No drop down for the finish.

Chadderbox said...

Did Joey's dad motion for him to go at Harvick......or go to the hauler?

Bucky Butler said...

Believe it or not, I think the trees helped keep the 9 from exiting the track.

Sophia said...

I never realized there was no FENCE amidst the evergreens...figured they had overgrown SOME sort of fence.

Scary & sickening...hope all are ok. Nice to see Kasehy walk out of that hard bang up.

Daly Planet Editor said...

TNT really whiffed at the finish line. That was simply not good.

Chadderbox said...

What about Gordon????

Nothing on him yet!

Sophia said...

probably no drop down due to wreck..and takes a while to sort out that mess of an order...will cut TNT slack for that.

For the most part MUCH IMPROVED CAMERA WORK! but almost blew it on the in car/bumper cam last 20 laps...perhaps Mike Wells left for a smoke or a cupcake or something :)

Daly Planet Editor said...

All drivers out of the cars and at the infield medical center.

Bucky Butler said...

Kasey caught the top of the wall. I thought the rear may have brushed the trees but he wasn't far enough up the wall.

I wish the pit reporter could've caught up with J-Lo as he ran to the garage. It would've tested TNT's dump button, I believe.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Sophia, it's all computer driven and automatically updates. They just got flustered.

OSBORNK said...

How could they have a drop down when it finished under caution and the field was frozen. The cars crossed the line but not in the order of the official finish.

Anonymous said...

Gave up on TNT. Switched to Sirius on my AV receiver.
Trying to get word on the Biff and Mark Martin.
BTW, checked out ESPN2's NHRA coverage......another rain delay.

Jonathan said...

HEck yes great comment by Joey! CLASSIC with the wife and the fire suit lol haha

Bucky Butler said...

"His wife wear's the fire suit in the family." CLASSIC!

Daly Planet Editor said...

Nice comment from Logano on TV about Harvick. Pretty funny.

MikeC said...

Yeah, you've got to have some sort of a drop-down, even with the wreck. Even if it just shows the top 5 finishers. It's not the first time there's been a last lap crash. They got caught up in the crash and sort of forgot about the other cars that were finishing.

Charlie said...

Lets get the ratings up. Reporter trying to get things going when there wasn't much there to start with.

The Loose Wheel said...

Joey Logano dig son!!!!

that was AWESOME

Anonymous said...

Wonder how long before DeLana responds on Twitter?

Jonathan said...

good Harvick think he owns the place, hes always been an a jerk heck even to his own crew. Good that was probably the best Nascar post race interview i've ever seen and Harvick deserves all of it! Even the guys in the booth brought it back up awsome

glenc1 said...

btw....unless I missed it, they never did follow up on the 1. That's just poor.

MikeC said...

There's no one better at comeback one-liners than Harvick.....can't wait to hear what he says in response.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Before you head out, scoot back to the TDP main page and leave us a race wrap-up comment on the "Your Turn" post.

Anonymous said...

Yeah, the first thing I did was check Delanna's twitter, nothing yet.

Bucky Butler said...

No mention from anyone, including Kasey. How does Allmendinger get away blocking his teammate back in the pack like that? Unreal.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Couple of issues. Bad finish coverage and no graphics. Bad pit reporters post-race. Marty Snider's rap is that he always asks one too many cute questions.

When it hits the fan, I don't care how nice a guy he is...having a Cup owner doing post-race interviews is just plain wrong.
