Live Blogging Sprint Cup Series From Daytona (12PM - FOX)

The NASCAR on FOX team comes out of the gate in 2011 trying to get different results from exactly the same personalities in front of and behind the cameras. It's going to be a tall task to get the momentum flowing in the right direction where NASCAR fans and TV are concerned.

As you can tell from the picture above, the theme of this one is going to be Dale Earnhardt Jr. trying to win the race on the 10th anniversary of his father's passing. Fans will once again hold up three fingers on lap 3 of the race. Keep an eye on how FOX handles this topic during the event.

Chris Myers is back in the Hollywood Hotel and it should be interesting to see if he continues the same act of being Mr. Confused. In fact, Myers is now in his second season of hosting Inside NASCAR on Showtime. Myers has a long history in TV as an informed and sophisticated on-air professional.

Darrell Waltrip and Jeff Hammond join Myers for the pre-race show. Hammond has been outstanding this season with focused TV comments and an informed presence. Waltrip has been overused by SPEED and the result has been a tired guy who is talking too much. A well-rested Waltrip is going to be needed for this race that promises to have a very different dynamic.

Mike Joy and Larry McReynolds join Waltrip in the booth for the race. This mix has been effective for many years, but Waltrip's non-stop chatter last year at this event set the tone for what was to be a rough season. If the producer allows Joy to take charge and direct traffic, things should be fine.

Steve Byrnes, Krista Voda, Matt Yocum and Dick Berggren are the top of the heap in terms of pit road reporters. A diverse group of professionals with other interests and TV projects, FOX has failed to effectively use their talents for several seasons. Hopefully, a new focus on information will allow them more air time.

There is no RaceBuddy for the FOX races this season. That means during TV commercials fans have nowhere to continue watching the race. NASCAR.com has a live leaderboard but no free scanners. Basically, FOX and the radio are the only two information sources for the event.

FOX has not embraced social media and there is no focused location for tweets or Facebook conversation with fans during the telecast. Darrell Waltrip has an active Twitter account, so it should be interesting to see if he will be interacting with fans from the TV booth during the race.

The network has FLIR technology, new in-car camera angles and a race where two cars can pull away from the pack. It's an interesting combination of elements where making TV is concerned. FOX has a long history of overusing in-car angles, trying to build drama and focusing on the winner instead of all the finishers.

There are four years left in the current TV contract. In reality, FOX may well have only four more cracks at covering the Daytona 500. After last season's pothole issues and the erosion of TV viewers, the pressure is on to deliver a memorable and informative telecast.

We will use this post to host your comments on the TV coverage of the Daytona 500 on FOX. To add your opinion, just click on the comments button below. This is a family-friendly website, please keep that in mind when posting. Thank you for taking the time to stop by The Daly Planet for the fifth season.

A well rested DW talks too much. If Fox wanted to improve the broadcast, they'd keep him, Larry Mac, Myers, and Hammond quiet and let Mike Joy do most of the talking.

racingfool said...

Thanks goodness for good ole broadcast. I have some "rabbit ears" hung out the door and wired into my 54 inch TV. The picture is incredible.
Some people do not realize you can do this. I had a younger friend over the other night and she never figured it out. LOL
I wish all the races were on Fox.
Then everyone could watch.
JD, and Planeteers. Let go Daytona racing. Yea!!!!!

Jonathan said...

racing fool I agree! Well everyone its just about time..... Just about time for the biggest event of the year DAYTONA! YESSSSSS Have fun

terri said...

From what I've seen so far this week, I'm not optimistic about the booth for today's race.

Would love to see Mike Joy just once tell DW to "stick a sock in it." It would be worth getting fired for.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Beautiful weather, good crowd! Nice start.

Daly Planet Editor said...

This set is just for pre-race. Part of new attempt to get fans in the mix.

Anonymous said...

Was it me or were they booing the chuckleheads on-stage at the start there? lol

Robert Merrill said...

Some nice energy coming off of Chris Myers. I am liking it.

Roland said...

WOW what an opening. Love this they need to do an outdoor pre race every weel. You can feel the energy and excitement. Man I hope it lasts.

Daly Planet Editor said...

That is the alternate version of Chris Myers. No longer playing the fool.

What a freaking difference.

Anonymous said...

Sure hope we don't see the Noah's Ark 500 today - everyone running 2x2 like the truck and nationwide races. Boring boring boring racing except for the last couple laps

Daly Planet Editor said...

Well, it will absolutely be team play because of the new pavement. The difference is that 43 cars have never tried it.

Robert Merrill said...

No kidding JD. I am loving this. I am actually looking forward to the rest of the prerace show. Usually I dread prerace shows because they lack excitement, but this has a fantastic energy level. I am really enjoying this.

William said...

Looking forward to the race. Am trying to use my iPad to listen to the track pass scanners on NASCAR.com. The page loads and can select the officials but don't think anything is being broadcasted. Has anyone been able to use an iPad on. Lol on the TMZ

GinaV24 said...

4 more years! When Fox first came on in 2001, it was fun and fresh. 10 years later, I feel like I've seen this act too many times.

It they will let Mike Joy call the race AND the person calling the shots in the camera truck does their job right, that's pretty much what I need for a race broadcast.

I don't need a lot of talking from DW or the others. Just show me the race and for heaven's sakes how about a little professionalism -- no cheerleading, no shilling.

racingfool said...

The reason that they moved outside for the Pre-race is so Hammond could work on his tan in the Florida sun.
They ran out of spray in the make-up trailer.

Jonathan said...

I like what there doing with the pre race in w the fans! This tmz thing is different lol if done right like this is its entertaining. Now Pizzi or whatever thats stupid!! Hope we dont see him today. But I like how there not in the hollywood hotel

Daly Planet Editor said...

DW as Harvey Levin! That was funny.

Palmetto said...

Historically I haven't watched pre-race shows. I had the Speed guys on in the background while I worked in the garage this morning. It was pleasant enough, for the amount of attention I gave it.

I have avoided the "Hollywood Hotel" like a pit road speeding penalty. I'll let the Planeteer's comments today tell me if I should continue to do so.

hey gang! trying something new this daytona 500: going to the daytona party without my laptop! not sure how i'll feel at the end of the day but i'm going to try & not give in and borrow my host's laptop!

will check in on everyone after the race, late tonight.

race hard, be safe and have fun, guys!

Daly Planet Editor said...

When is the last time we had a pre-race show in the Cup Series that was hitting on all cylinders?

Ben Florance said...

As long as there are no Pizzi sighting I'll be happy

Hard week for Chris Myers. Our hearts all go out to him today.
He's doing a great job, upbeat considering he had to bury his Dad Thursday.
So sad.

Isn't it fun to see just how TV can totally change?

That always amazes me!

Robert Merrill said...

Racingfool, I had no idea that Chris Myers' dad had passed. That's terrible.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Three songs from Brad P. coming up next on FOX after the break.

Good choice of artists.

Anonymous said...

Drivers are so much more accessible before a huge event than any other sport

racingfool said...

This outside show is amazing!
They finally came up with something exciting.
Compare to the endless drawling on and on inside the Hollywood Hotel this stands out.
Drivers arms reach away, fans, great backdrop.
Great idea. I wonder who came up with it?

Roland said...

Gotta get rid of that gopher!

racingfool said...

Great song and he even got the name of the town right.
It's Daytona Beach. The track is Daytona.
Good job Brad!!!!!!

Daly Planet Editor said...

Fox Sports has a new president, Erik Shanks who said he wanted to freshen up some of the existing programming.

They certainly have so far.

racingfool said...

First 30 minutes and Fox is letting the TV viewers get the feel of the excitement level create at Daytona. Nice Fox! It's about time.

Anonymous said...

All the gushing praise is nice, but is nobody going to comment how strange the ending was to the Kurt Busch interview? Looked like they dumped out of a tape piece right in the middle of it.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Really? I did not see that. Too much coffee already!

racingfool said...

If Erik Shanks is the new decision maker. What's up with David Hill?
Is he in a hole somewhere looking for Digger? Wow that was a flop as big as "new Coke"

Bill said...

Don'tcha just love the ginormous Chevy bowtie and the Pizza Hut logos? NOT.

Ken-Michigan said...

It's a good start.

NASCAR making a noticeable move more towards the country music fan.

I remember about 10-12 years ago, when they left the country crowd and tried the rock / alternative route.

It's a great day for a race !!

Vince said...

Snow, sleet & freezing rain in my part on Michigan today. It just started with the snow & sleet. Possible wide spread power outages. Hope the power don't go out during the race!

I think these prerace shows on Fox are too long. 30 min would have been plenty. I'm not a country fan so the concert is a waste of time for me. Wish they'd interview more drivers instead of the concert. Do a Wendy V. walk down the grid.

Well, lets hope for a great race today and that DW looses his voice 5 min into the broadcast!

Bill said...

Oh, and as racingfool said earlier, if you have a newer TV that can pickup digital signals, I think the over the air broadcast quality is superior to what I'm getting on Directv.

Vicky D said...

Brad was a good choice for pre-race entertainment. I liked all songs.

Daly Planet Editor said...

David Hill is now in charge of SPEED and is responsible for all the changes going on at that network from Steve Byrnes hosting Race Hub to creating the SPEED Center and updating all motorsports highlights on the weekend.

Hill brought Patti Wheeler in to run the programming and production departments.

racingfool said...

Bill, it not only a great clear picture. It's cheaper too. FREE!
I watch everything else I need on streaming. Hulu, Netflick, networks, and more.
I cannot wait for TNT and race buddy.
When will NASCAR GET IT.

PammH said...

Me too Vince. Supposed to hit late this afternoon. Stay safe. Liking the pre-race so far.

Sophia said...

JD thanks for the blog during races again. Happy 500 Everybody. Last year I was listening to Mardi Gras music & was happy for the choice since the pothole issue.

Personally some of the country songs were VERY depressing to me (for reasons I shall not explain) but coulda picked something happier unless they were about Dale Sr & I missed it.

I am so sorry Chris had to bury his father yesterday :-( I had no idea. heartbreak time no matter the reason, no matter the age. Condolences to he & his family.

re: Any applau---er gripes on the camera work. Will wait to add those two pennies :-D

NTG_2011 said...

Lots of praise for changes made, but big picture is we had to rely on web streams just to see the Nationwide & Camping World series this weekend. Being far out of market doesn't help, so we'll take advantage of a rare local radio broadcast with the ads muted on the television. Hope the OTA digital signal holds out during a tsnownami..

Daly Planet Editor said...

It was a shame that the parties in the deal could not agree on offering a streaming feed, even for a small fee.

Just got to get the message to those who cannot get to a TV.

Vince said...

Great tribute to Dale. I sure miss that guy. #3 forever........

racingfool said...

So sad right now.

OSBORNK said...

The "Country Music" is fine with me but it seems odd to have it if they want to attract the 18-34 year old demographic. I don't think many of that age group are attracted to the modern version of "Country Music".

AncientRacer said...

As an on scene reporter today I want to welcome myself and all you to 2011!

Three observations and a prediction:

The crowds are today and have been throughout the 4 days I have been here the largest and happiest I have seen in 3 or 4 years. Thatr is nice to see.

The most honored man I have seen has been Ken Schrader. Everywhere he goes he gives the "three" and people applaud and cheer him. When he did well at Volusia Motorsports park Thurday the crowd went nuts cheering him. Has to make him feel good.

The despised Digger Van is the most lonely souvenir trailer in the place and Friday night there was a "Digger only" camp. Bring a Digger or some other stuffed rodent, drop it in the campfire and get a free beverage of your choice. The event was well attended.

And today Jeff Gordon will win. Jeff has been everywhere and I can tell you he is super pumped.

Have fun Planeteers!

Daly Planet Editor said...

I have a feeling that chasing that demo is on the back burner.

racingfool said...

Wow, I'll bet this is really hard for Chris doing this piece.
He's pro and it shows considering what he went through this week.

inkthatpaints said...

Why is Fox playing a football theme for a Nascar race?

Vince said...

Thanks PammH. You stay safe too. It has already started snowing hard here in southwest MI.

I like the new Chris Myers. Too bad it took so long for us to see the real guy.

MikeC said...

I believe we'll continue to see this energy and the fast pace to the Fox pre-race shows. Outside of this race and Talladega, Fox's pre-race shows this season are only going to be 30 minutes long this year, unlike the hour long they used to be. Hopefully the shorter pre-race shows means they've trimmed the fat from them, so to speak.

OSBORNK said...

Is anyone else sick of the JJ worship?

racingfool said...

Checked out the "free" stuff on Nascar dot com. It ain't free today. (unless you sign up with a credit card)

Daly Planet Editor said...

If you did not hear it earlier, the NFL changed the Super Bowl date to a week later.

In return, NASCAR has moved the Daytona 500 to one week later starting in 2012.

Sally said...

I'm really sick of having TV interview the same drivers over and over and over. I know there are more than 8 or 9 drivers there...with all the coverage they have, couldn't they interview someone new?

Does anyone else wonder if any of those other athletes had ever heard of JJ until they were asked to do that TV bit?

Bill said...

I hope this is not a thread hijack or anything, but after today, I will be forced to discontinue my Directv acct. I am long unemployed, and had to choose between internet and tv.

Well, I can't look for jobs on the tv, so it was a no-brainer which one to keep. I also have a pretty snappy internet connection (8mb/sec), and can watch streaming HD video pretty well. I know that I'll be able to watch Cup races OTA until mid May, but I love watching Nationwide races, and a truck race every now and then.

Can anyone tell me what my options are? Maybe a link or two?

racingfool said...

Chris is great and can actually pronounce words correctly.
Ain't that cool?
It pints a better picture.

Vicky D said...

Sally agree with you, where's Regan Smith, Mark Martin, David Ragan, Kasey Kahne, and others???? They show interviews of the same over and over.

racingfool said...

Bill, I've been doing the air waves and internet stream for a year now.
I do not miss a thing.
Except:
Nationwide on ESPN
Cup when ESPN takes over.
As far as other programing, there is very little that is not streamed a day or so late.
Like Idol, TNA Wrestling (yes I like it) and much more.
What is so cool is I have the option to watch when I want to online.
20 minutes to go to Kick off.
Oops I mean Green Flag. LOL

enough of the music, the self indulgent, UN-FUNNY attempts at humor>
Honestly, the stretch limo? The "talent" ideas meeting?

50 minutes into the pre race before they get into a decent piece?

Oh wait, another piece with animation! Trash talk piece for crissake.

THIS IS WHATS WRONG WITH NASCAR

Anonymous said...

I just watched a few minutes of the pre race coverage on both networks. It was all I could take. What, another "tribute" to Jimmie Johnson??? I heard Kenny Wallace's voice earlier and turned the TV off.DW just can't spew out the bs fast enough. He's not bad when he just calls the race, but no, he can't resist flapping his jaws. I hope this site is as interesting as it was during the NNS race. I'm not optimistic that today's race will be as good.

Anonymous said...

anyone remember when Phil & Benny Parsons dad died, and they both worked that weekend, saying he would be really mad if they didn't do their jobs. The show must go on, but still, Chris is being a real trooper.

ya know...lots of race fans are not country fans. The biggest sslections in the tailgate areas are usually classic or country rock. Big E himself said he mostly listened to that (and yes, I know Kix Brooks was a pal.) A lot of the drivers admit to being rap/hip-hop fans, although I personally can't stand it.

Newracefan said...

We'll I'm enjoying Fox for a change I like the new Chris Myers, hopefully they don't revert to type once back into the hotel. Have Pit command up and race scanner, incase JJ spotter is not the one talking. Haven't figured out how that's gonna work for us fans. Dalyplanet up and running beside Twitter so I'm all set

NTG_2011 said...

MRN has already talked to Bayne & Logano, now have Stewart. OTA signal is awful, they should be so lucky we bother to DVR. The D-team running the AM station isn't faring very well, production-wise, but at least that technology is weather-proof.

Anonymous said...

Finally a real Chris Meyers on the pre race. Now if he could just shut DW up for a few minutes it would be perfect. Love the tribute to Dale -

However, my husband hears the NFL music & hopes for a game. I wish Fox hadn't done that.

Thanks for the live blog again this year JD.I read it daily even tho' I don't comment alot

racingfool said...

Annon,

ancient I had race view a couple of years ago. You wind up watching the video and not the race. I have given it up. If I want to watch TV I will stat home

Hot Pass now has 5 in place of 29 for a four car Hendrick hot pass day.

Great coverage thus far from FOX BUT DW is dragging it down for them.

DW needs a very small restrictor plate.

Anonymous said...

@Al - remember this is the new fuel E whatever. It gets less MPG -NASCAR is still mandating the old smaller fuel cell - so more fuel stops

Anonymous said...

...and 2 by 2 was supposed to be safer?

lacboi said...

This race just got boring

Dannyboy said...

LOVE the Crank it Up! FOX is the best! Nothng better than a small block wound up tite!

Daly Planet Editor said...

How many times is that for Mikey this weekend spinning folks? Whew.

Jimbacca said...

Too bad for Brian. Nice to see him up front with an antique setup instead of just starting and parking.

AncientRacer said...

Hooooo S###! I cant see who got into it, but it did make the I Pad heads here look up!

GinaV24 said...

well, that ends my interest in the 500. Glad that I didn't waste the $ to go and see it.

All 3 of the HMS cars in the same pile

GinaV24 said...

I'm guessing that no one should want Mikey to push them

Anonymous said...

Michael does to the field what Darrell does to the broadcast.

Anonymous said...

this racing is not safe and not all that much fun to watch

Anonymous said...

Hope Brian Keselowski can get another car

RWar24 said...

I hope Nascrap is happy..Completely stupid.

terri said...

Well, I hope Nascar is happy. Half the field in the garage. Next time, don't repave the track so well.

The first time fan would be saying WTH is this?

And DW not very chatty now that MW's team has caused the whole wreck.

God, what a mess.

Branden said...

I guess Waltrip is trying to wreck all the competition what a clown

GinaV24 said...

Anon 2:11 -- I agree with you. Not safer AND boring. what a great combo.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Reut just said it was his fault. You guys watching?

Anonymous said...

DW sounded dejected when he saw Michael didn't make it through the accident he caused. Nice of a driver to absolve his team owner of any wrong doing. Car ownership has its benefits.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Looks like only about 26 cars remaining. Bud Shootout Part 2!

AncientRacer said...

New slogan going up here: "Brian have at it!" (It is sarcasm)

I wouldn't blame the track, guys. I blame NASCAR for trying to micromanage what a car and driver does.

lacboi said...

Fox is slow on the draw today they have some rust to knock off.

GinaV24 said...

JD, yes, I heard the interview with Reut, but what's he gonna say after all? The 15 has been involved in multiple incidents since they started speedweeks, after a while, you just have to believe your eyes, not what someone says to be PC

MikeC said...

This isn't like Daytona 500s of recent years. Usually the first 150 laps have been rather tame lately. We're not even 100 miles into this one.

GinaV24 said...

26 cars left at lap 34! wow, what a letdown if I were a fan at the race.

Just a few thoughts

I really miss RaceBuddy

Since we got NFL music - why not ditch the rat & get the robot? Its sort of mechanical & will fit in better, right?

This "racing" is not good - real race fans do not like watching wrecks - we want to see racing.

I Really Miss RaceBuddy!

bozo said...

not sure it was mikey's fault..you heard kyle say on the first one that he trailed brake because he saw cars in front and had no where to go and when he did hit the brake it got him out of control.. ruet said he had to back down due to what was in front of him and didn't tell mike on the radio

Sally said...

So, Jeff is saying that basically, drivers should just cruise for most of the race. great.

Tracy D said...

Good interview with Jeff Gordon in the garage.

Anonymous said...

Dear Jeff Gordon,

This is a race. Fans pay to see drivers race 3 wide and not ride around until the last 10 laps.

From,

Concerned fan

Hey everyone! Great coverage I like it so far! Great all around

looks like there will be some major changes before July race. This "dance partner" racing does not work with 43 cars on track.

Sally said...

Obviously the theme song for Dega and daytona has to be 'The Pusher'.

Tracy D said...

Steve Wallace going 200mph behind you, what can go wrong? I'm quoting someone else, can't remember who, LOL.

AncientRacer said...

Now look at me. I'm doing it too. I'm at the race but on the Planet. And where is Gordon He still in? I have predicted him to win. I have his and not KYBu's hat on.
