Live Blogging Nationwide Series From Richmond (SPEED - 7:30PM)

Here we go! Big night for SPEED as the network produces the Nationwide Series race from Richmond International Raceway.

It will be Rick Allen calling the action with Darrell and Michael Waltrip in the TV booth. Krista Voda, Ray Dunlap and Hermie Sadler are the pit road reporters.

ESPN is involved in NFL Draft coverage and ESPN and ABC are also booked. NASCAR brokered a deal to get the race over to SPEED, knowing that network was already very familiar to NASCAR fans.

The telecast promises to be very different from the ESPN presentations. SPEED will focus on the race, as opposed to the Sprint Cup Series emphasis that has been an ESPN pattern.

The evening will also have a live and free RaceBuddy over at NASCAR.com and many of the SPEED personalities will be tweeting all night long during the race. Twitter has proven to be a great outlet for live updates on NASCAR news.

This post will serve to host your comments on this Nationwide special. To add your TV-related opinion, just click on the comments button below. This is a family-friendly website, please keep that in mind when posting. Thanks to everyone for dropping by The Daly Planet.

Hi everyone! Here we go and it should be exciting to see what is different on this telecast from the ESPN coverage.

Even though I won't be listening to the audio, I kexpect video will be substantially better ...hey, what a great start - aerial shot to open and close pre-race

Happy Race Evening Planeteers <3

Hope Rick gets to talk tonight :(

Debby said...

One good thing, we don't have to change the channel to find the race!! Hope the Waltrip bros get a sore throat early!! LOL!! Get Krista up in the booth.

Anonymous said...

i think the coverage will be great, but i'm sorry one waltrip per broadcast is plenty.

glenc1 said...

I'm gonna at least give it a few minutes.

Geez...for a ten year old, that was something...

w17scott said...

per usual RIR race ...great anthem and well-timed flyover ...did you keep your flyover right on cue, JD?

Vicky D said...

That anthem was beautiful what a nice young lady!

Daly Planet Editor said...

Sign that young lady up right away!

Roadgeek Adam said...

Nice to hear some interest in the non-Cup drivers (thankful there is only 4 of them of 41 drivers.)

I'll, as usual, pull for the 37 non-Cup drivers in the race. How about Kenny Wallace starting 7th and Nemechek 13th. We're seeing some experience in the field today.

Anonymous said...

Love Krista setting us up :)

SonicAD said...

Man, this is weird.

Roadgeek Adam said...

Let's also not forget as Krista just said today would've been Dale Earnhardt's 60th Birthday. (I remembered that at about 10 am this morning.)

Daly Planet Editor said...

No Cup guy worship! I like it.

PammH said...

I just want to say hi, but I won't be here hardly at all. Can't keep up w/RB & twitter hardly. Barney Hall is my announcer of choice tonite, btw.

Roadgeek Adam said...

Love the Kenny Wallace clips!

Anonymous said...

Thanks for the pic of the ol' 88. My favorite era of cars!

Can't watch so keep me up to date

GO SPEED! Show NASCAR what they're missing!

JS said...

This broadcast is already vastly better than the typical ESPN broadcast.

I'd pay more to watch Nationwide on Speed (when I do watch Nationwide).

Ok, what's going on here? Last night The Annoying one was tolerable, and tonight the Waltards are actually (gasp) less-than-obnoxious.

Frankly, I'm scared...

Anonymous said...

JD, I keep getting an error when I try to post. I'll find a way! Too much waltrip.

Jonathan said...

digging this so far!

w17scott said...

actually showing racing on an actual broadcast ...how 'bout that?

Anonymous said...

Count on Speed to give us great pictures!

Sally

glenc1 said...

Sally, I had a time of it yesterday. Took me an hour. Kept asking me to sign in to the blogger, and when I did, kept getting an error message. At least you can do anon, wouldn't work for me.

Jonathan said...

I feel The Nationwide Series would be better off right here on SPEED!

Roadgeek Adam said...

Love the coverage of Kenny Wallace. What a night for the experienced Wallace!

Daly Planet Editor said...

Jonathan,

If ESPN would just do the Cup Series when the change comes in July, then SPEED could do the rest of the NNS races and it would not screw up ESPN's college football Saturdays.

Makes sense to me!

Mary said...

ESPN is so stiff and starchy that's one of their (many) problems

Jonathan said...

Yes makes the most sense to me as well. But I dont see ESPN doing that... But you never know I never thought tonight would happen (on SPEED) so who knows.

Anonymous said...

WOW! This is more like it!

Daly Planet Editor said...

Think SPEED and NASCAR execs have to like what they are seeing so far.

CRZ said...

No mention of the start and parks, though.

Come to think of it, I don't remember anybody mentioning that they didn't even field a full 43 tonight...

Anonymous said...

I have to admit, I've had the volume turned down for the pre race show and the race so far. You know, its peaceful to watch the race that way. I watch the cars and the tracker at the top of the screen. Its so much less annoying then listening to Kenny Wallace like I mistakenly did for last night's Late Model Race. Its good to see some non-Cup drivers doing well.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Rick and I argued about that. He feels he does not have to mention them, the fans can see the ticker.

Not my idea of being open and honest, but he says "the show" comes first.

So we agree to disagree.

glenc1 said...

showing the track in normal fashion...showing cars from the front....

Anonymous said...

They showed the first caution!

Roadgeek Adam said...

123 laps without a caution, yikes. At least these mega differences are erased.

w17scott said...

giving SPEED audio a try ...Rick Allen does seem to be handling things well ...guess DW is hung up on twittering, since he seems to be quiet for a time ...admiring hustle of backstretch camera operator on RaceBuddy ...NW regulars acquitting themselves well so far

Sophia said...

WoW! Have the tv on mute & listening to the Reds game on radio.

FABULOUS VISUALS on Speed...open wide camera work. If it was like this for CUP & ALL the races, I'd still be watching! :)

Just the few minutes I've turned the tv on and I'm afraid to say it...ok..they just went to Ricky Stenhouse Jr bumper car...but hopefully it's not been broken up like FOX does!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Don't watch ESPN either though.

SPEED needs to be on more basic channels though..around here you MUST have TW Variety tier to get speed & the big trees to the south & west/nasty weather make satellite impossible.

Listening to the Reds cross promote the Zoo & Cleopatra...sigh..somebody stop the insanity ;)

p.s. NOW they are promoting SPARTA, lol :)

Wait - RaceBuddy's on Fox Sports site?

Roadgeek Adam said...

NASCAR.com right now.

RaceBuddy is over at NASCAR.com and is a joint effort of SPEED, Turner and NASCAR.

Roland said...

Well my MRN stream kicked the bucket. Had it and Racebuddy plugged into the ol' surround sound with the TV on mute but the WiFi cant handle both so I'm gonna give the booth a chance, cause to me 2 Waltrips are better than 1 Marty Reid. Even with it muted Its still better than espn. Theres been zero cutaways to Tim Brewer no distracting ticker on the bottom of the screen, less commercials and better timing of when the breaks happen, wider camera shots. This is how this series should be presented. This is how ALL races should be done. Speed is taking Espn to school. I think the ratings will be lower than espn but thats just because Speed is available in fewer homes. If it wasn't for that, I think nascar would take a harder look at more NW races on Speed.

Charlie said...

I can hook up and run RaceBuddy but I have a low end computer so the video runs then pauses.
A bit to hard to watch.

glenc1 said...

DW has Aric back in Texas again. Reminds me of Spencer trying to say "Gilliland".

slander..too funny.

15 Laps to go.

w17scott said...

Mr Editor -
What a hoot that youtube video was ...so they really did say all those things we thought we heard ...Waltrips are a bit restrained tonight, aren't they ...Rick Allen doing well managing the booth ...how do you manage to run out of gas on a short track????
Walter

w17scott said...

Rick reached down deep in the wayback machine to bring up that "action track" comment ...Paul Sawyer made that comment when he announced plans for the new track configuration

w17scott said...

wow ...a double Amarillo ...out of the mouths of babes, eh?

Daly Planet Editor said...

Yes, they did Walter. It's been five years of fun.

Charlie said...

That was a mess of an end. Who was where and why?

Daly Planet Editor said...

Well, that worked out pretty darn good.

Few in-car cams, Waltrips behaved and we got some racing in for once.

Anonymous said...

Hopefully the Cup race will be as interesting!

Roadgeek Adam said...

The coverage was fantastic, the result, not fantastic. We go another race. Ya know, it might help to have more stand-alones to kill some of this problem.

Anonymous said...

Speed did a great job. No Rusty was a real bonus and Waltrips did fine. More Nationwide on Speed. No NASCAR on ESPN

adamtw1010 said...

This was the best race I've seen in broadcasting in as long as I can remember. SPEED has set a new standard for excellent NASCAR broadcasting tonight. Two memorable things for me were the lack of commercials and the update on Scott Wimmer after his problem. That would not have happened on ESPN. Learned some new names from the Nationwide Series tonight.

CRZ said...

Congratulations to Danica Patrick on her SPEED-reported third place finish!

Roland said...

SPEED's coverage was FANTASTIC! AMAZING! SPECTACULAR! I wasn't inundated with commercials, tight shots, and in-car cameras, and neither Waltrip spoke a lot! Rick Allen did a GREAT GREAT job on the Lap-by-Lap!

WHY OH WHY can't FOX do the exact same thing tomorrow night?!

Despite the long long green runs, they kept the race exciting! That was BY FAR the best NASCAR telecast I've seen in YEARS, and it puts ESPN to shame, in my opinion.

Great job to the SPEED production team, the pit reporters, the Waltrips, and especially Rick Allen!

Anonymous said...

LOL CRZ! I know I'm all she can finish 3rd in a race where she's not even in but isn't even in the country the race is being ran in :p

glenc1 said...

w17...they were actually still calling it the action track around 2000, not sure I'd call it the *way* back...but it made me smile & think fondly on the Sawyers. Never should have sold out,sigh...

PattiChris said...

Race coverage was excellent. Rick calling the race was perfect and shock of all shocks, the Waltrips were a great team. Please let ESPN know this is how you cover a NASCAR race.

@planetstardom said...

All Nascar TV content should be on @SPEED... plain and simple. I know dollars have to make sense but its such better viewing.

Imagine... SPEED, a Motorsports / Racing exclusive network treating and presenting their race program like a sport. What a novel idea.

I feel like an idiot sometimes watching Nascar on FOX and ESPN, with their comedy-heavy content and constant need for feel-good / TV sexy storylines. Chris Myers makes me want to kick a hole in my TV.

Bravo SPEED!

Daly Planet Editor said...

What an interesting night! See you guys tomorrow for Sprint Cup Series action from Richmond!

Thanks for stopping by!

It's just mind-boggling that FOX and SPEED are sister-networks and they can produce two completely different forms of race coverage!

I would much rather see Krista Voda host a 30-minute pre-race on FOX, similar to how Bill Weber used to host the DiscoverCard Countdown to Green on NBC ... just pit reporters interviewing drivers and real features about drivers and teams. 30 minutes, that's it.

I love Mike Joy on the lap-by-lap, but it's like he's given up on trying to control Waltrip. How Rick Allen could call that race with BOTH Waltrips up there and maintain such control is beyond me, but Mike Joy needs to do that with Darrell for tomorrow night.

I wish tonight's SPEED production team would produce all of the FOX races instead of using the good ol' "stick and ball" guys. Considering that SPEED is "The Motorsports Authority," their people should be producing the races.

w17scott said...

@glenc1 -
nostaglic indeed ...saw my first race in 1960 when it was still harness racing track ...btw, got rained out on Sunday ...again in mid-week when they did try to run it under the horse racing lights ...finished few days later ...remember Nelson Stacy or Rex White seemed to win every race for several years ...Cotton Owens won that first race I saw when it was finally completed

Anonymous said...

That was actually the worst coverage of the race EVER, and the fact that they cant get the finish right is inexcusable. This site would have killed ESPN for that.

The fact that this site worships Rick Allen a Stick & Ball guy until 7 years ago is a testament to what happens if the Talent actually communicates with the bloggers. Thats all, Be Fair.

Robert Castle said...

It's very funny how JD applauds Speed's broadcast before it even happens (even with the trucks) and everyone loves that broadcast afterwards.

JD bashes ESPN every chance he gets and what a surprise, every hates the ESPN broadcasts.

I think Speed sucks, Rick Allen is horrible, so is Waltrip, Dunlap, and basically the entire crew. I don't much like ESPN's announcers but they sure broadcast a better race. Maybe since JD considers himself a big bad media member, he can show a little unbiased writing in the future and i think we'll see different attitudes about the broadcast

Daly Planet Editor said...

Hey Anon and "Robert,"

Nice try guys. This telecast danced circles around the crap put out by FOX and ESPN this season...period.

I have gone at it with Rick over his truck series issues and even kicked him out of my live chat!

SPEED used to be horrible with no NASCAR shows, bad new series and awful programming.

Now, they do one good NNS telecast and your on me for loving them? Come back tomorrow after the FOX race if you think this is a worship-fest.

Once again, nice try...no sale!

JD

It would be interesting if this site actually did techical analysis of the coverage. Actual timed On Boards vs Fox. Time Spent on NNS Regulars vs ESPN

Glen, check out our friends over at cawsnjaws.com and also Jayksi. He lists the info shortly after the races.

Not going to happen here, just a little column once a day and some live blogs.

Judging from the comments, I missed a great broadcast. Several other messages boards I read also said SPEED did a great job. The trolls that believe the posters are brainwashed should take a look around the net.

Thank you SPEED!! Haven't enjoyed a NW or Cup race that much in a long time. The booth was great. Who would have thunk 2 Waltrips would be a good thing. The pics were terrific. Don't think I yelled at TV one time. Please SPEED find some way to get the contracts from ESPN & FOX when their time is up. Thanks again!!!

Hey JD,
First time posting.Figured what the hell I'd give it a shot so hear goes.I thought Speed did a good job. The Waltrips surprised for sure.Wide shots. Letting stories work themselves out.No Cup worship. All around good show.

Darn. I forgot all about the race and I was home at the time. I've been a fan for over 50 years and I forgot about the race...now I know how little I care for NASCAR any more. That's a revelation to me as lately I have followed the races on twitter, this blog and DVR.

I actually forgot! I guess that means I'm not a fan any more.
