Live Blogging Sprint Cup Series From Richmond (FOX - 7PM ET)

It's a very different weekend at Richmond International Raceway. Other than Marty Smith and Shannon Spake on-site for NASCAR Now, there is no ESPN presence at the track. SPEED handled the Nationwide Series race Friday night and FOX will produce the Sprint Cup Series race tonight.

Darrell Waltrip is a busy man. He is clearly the personality that both SPEED and FOX want on as many NASCAR shows as possible. This has pushed Jeff Hammond and Larry McReynolds toward the back burner.

Waltrip once again will be the star as he kicks-off the pre-race show with Chris Myers and Hammond from the outdoor infield stage. Hammond and Myers then move inside the Hollywood Hotel for the rest of the event.

Waltrip heads upstairs for the race telecast with Mike Joy and Larry McReynolds. Richmond needs the excitement that we used to see from Joy, not the current level of information being offered between Waltrip outbursts of emotion. Friday night, SPEED's Rick Allen kept a tight leash on Waltrip for the truck series race and it worked out quite well.

There are lots of stories tonight including Denny Hamlin racing at his home track and Kyle Busch continuing to grow-up before our eyes. The reality is that the stage is set for Dale Earnhardt Jr. to continue his resurgence at a track where he has a history of success. An Earnhardt win would a huge shot in the arm for the sport.

FOX has choices tonight on how to present the race. Last night, SPEED used wideshots to show groups of cars racing and keep the TV viewers in the loop of who was where and how they got there. This season FOX has been enamored of in-car cameras and "hyper-tight" coverage. On a short track, it could be a disaster.

Tonight will also shine the spotlight on the pit reporters. Steve Byrnes, Krista Voda, Matt Yocum and Dick Berggren are the best in the business. FOX has allowed them to fade as the race telecast rolls on and Waltrip takes over. With all the different fuel and tire strategies we will see tonight, it will be important to make all four pit reporters an integral part of the telecast.

Richmond under the lights is exactly what NASCAR needs to shake the "lovebug" racing out of the minds of the fans. The Nationwide race featured two-wide racing and fantastic restarts. While the Cup drivers are concerned about tire wear, the story of the race may be fuel if long green flag runs are the order of the day.

This post will serve to host your comments on the NASCAR on FOX coverage of the Sprint Cup Series race from Richmond, VA. To add your TV-related comment, just click on the comments button below. This is a family-friendly website, please keep that in mind when posting. Thank you for taking the time to stop by The Daly Planet.

Going to be an interesting night in Richmond. Look for a points shake-up.

Happy Race Evening Planeteers :) <3

I've been enjoying the Rodney Atkins concert! So glad they streamed it ;). We even got to meet Matthew very nice young man.

I think NASCAR.com is coming around a bit.

Race Day has been an ordeal. Two hours is way too long. Should be half hour show leading into the Fox pre race coverage. There are a lot of top teams that didn't qualify well. An early big wreck could really shake things up. We will see.

Anonymous said...

Yes sir! They've been doing quite a few fun things lately! Almost getting with the times. Still some work to do but if they'll catch up with technology & get someone who has a clue in website design they could be something else!

Anonymous said...

If Fox calls the studio Hollywood Hotel, is the booth "The Hillbilly Hotel"?

Daly Planet Editor said...

RaceDay was tagged the Super WalMart of NASCAR TV.

Eventually there is something for everyone, but you have to wade through a ton of crapola to get to it.

I think Kyle Petty thinks John Roberts is a knucklehead.

Sally said...

I love that Kyle won't put up with that phoney "Kyle Busch has won a zillion Nascar races" stuff. He only counts his Cup wins. Good for him!

Anonymous said...

I love how everyone has NASCAR on FOX signs and FOX Sports signs. Everyone behind the stage was not there 30 minutes ago when SPEED's RaceDay checked in with the FOX guys.

Roland said...

Strong opening on the pre race. Crowd going wild. Then DW opens his mouth and kills the momentum

Hey, I can post as myself tonight! Yay.

Yes it really is I don't know why the shows have gone downhill :(. Back in 2K3 it was all Must See TV even when it was on FSN & they did it at 8 am regardless of race time & not always having drivers available to interview. JR, Waid, Mr. Winston were all awesome!

It's become a FF & then stop when a good segment is on :( if I do watch it live (which is generally only if a night race, it's not a wake up & watch anymore) I half pay attention until something catches my ear or I see a heads up on Twitter.

In Des Moines, IA, KDSM (my local FOX station) is off the air. Can't get it on DISH or via antenna. DISH reports the channel is having problems.

Anonymous said...

Anyone heard the latest on Trevor Bayne?

Kyle said...

I wish I could watch...KDSM, FOX 17 from Des Moines is currently not working on Dish Network. They have a message and some horrible music saying they know about the problem and working on having it fixed...Hopefully it comes back in time for green flag.

glenc1 said...

they just said Trevor's hoping to be released tomorrow from Mayo. Was having double vision. Tricky things, insect bites.

Charlie said...

So why is there just Fox signs behind the guys being waved by the fans.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Pretty interesting that Tony finally talked about his Jessica Zemken relationship on TV.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Charlie, how weird was that?

Roland said...

JD, Does nascar.com offer a free leaderboard for the Cup races?

Daly Planet Editor said...

Should be right on the front page!

glenc1 said...

I came upon a blog accidentally a few months ago...mostly female Stewart fans going on about Jessica. Wow...talk about having the claws out...yeeouch...! But it's not like he talks about them a lot, and to talk to DW...well, it's not like they've always been bestest pals.

Charlie said...

Wonder how much you get paid to hold up a sign. The more air time the higher the pay?

Ginny said...

Des Moines FOX is not on DirecTV either. Annoying music with a message they know about the problem and NO NEED TO CALL US. I'd be happy to see anyone on the screen right now, even KyleB.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Darrell Waltrip trying to pump Talladega, a race that featured absolutely no racing at all...just two-car drafting and trying to avoid the other two-car drafting teams.

Come on DW, get real!

Daly Planet Editor said...

Ginny, being told that station is off the air for a while.

Charlie said...

Hope the race isn't as scripted as the fans behind the pre-race show were.

I can certainly understand Kyle Petty's loyalty to his father's 200 wins, but Richard's 200 wins weren't all on tracks you'd recognize today. At the time this issue was being discussed and debated, another Nascar site had a long, detailed article about those 200 wins. They would occaisonally run 2-3 times a week on the Grand National circuit with wins at Savannah,Georgia(?) being counted in the 200. There were other obscure tracks this very old man never heard of, so Kyle Petty's tirade was not totally fair. Personally, I hate comparisons from one era to another in any sport. This isn't the first time Kyle Petty and John Roberts were at loggerheads.

glenc1 said...

JD, that was weird. I was thinking, why the heck is he talking about 'dega two weeks later?

This Fruit of the Loom ad is getting a whole lotta air play.

Daly Planet Editor said...

From Nate Ryan of USA Today after Waltrip talked about crew chief swap for JGR being "possible."

Ryan: As a national media outlet, if you talk about rumors that are KNOWN to be patently false, you increase their "truthiness."

Weird word, but I get his point.

@ Anon @ 7:29. If Fox and other media want to give Kyle's 'stats' with credit for every Nascar race he's won, that's fine. Then they also need to do it with EVERY driver wh has EVER won in any other Nascar series. That would puff up several other drivers stats, too.

Kinda like watching an arcade game with some little kid changing the pictures.

This is the FOX team. Last night the SPEED truck team produced the NNS race. Different producers and directors.

FOX is always terrible at the beginning of a race. It's presented like they don't know what to cover. So they just hop from car to car randomly.

Thursdays k & n pro series race was just wow unreal how they showed all the battles! Tonight back to the same old fox why dosent anything change? WHY thats my only question WHY WHY WHY WHY??????????????????????????

FOX WHY

Anonymous said...

Kempner's Mise en scène leaves a lot on the table with respect to live sports television. And you know it is deliberate. In fact, I don't believe many cinematic techniques have a place in covering live sports. But we are going to get it anyway. Oh well. Off to channel 795 and HotPass. As Good As It Gets.

Sally said...

Once again, whoever is unexpectedly running up front, DW liked their chances before the race. Even if he never mentioned it before.

Daly Planet Editor said...

This approach grinds fans right into the ground. Gives no perspective on what is actually going on in the race. Just picks and chooses cars to update and then moves on.

Pretty lousy, especially on a short track where wideshots make it very exciting to see all the racing going on.

terri said...

Well, the stands aren't full, but neither are they empty. Pretty good, considering.

But FOX, oh, FOX. Why? Why can't you learn anything over the years?

If I hadn't been to Richmond about 20 times, I'd have no clue what was going on. Wish I was there tonight, as I'd see a better race.
