Live Blogging Sprint Cup Series From Pocono (ESPN - 12PM)

Rain is an issue as ESPN heads into another Sprint Cup Series telecast. Nicole Briscoe will host from the Infield Pit Studio. Brad Daugherty and Rusty Wallace will be alongside.

Allen Bestwick will call the race with Dale Jarrett and Andy Petree from the TV booth. Tim Brewer is in the Tech Garage. Dave Burns, Jamie Little, Vince Welch and Dr. Jerry Punch are the pit reporters.

Bestwick made a big difference in the last telecast. Information gaps were gone, the commentary was smooth and all things were put into a veteran's perspective. It was like having a good referee in a basketball game. You never knew he was there.

ESPN's issues continue to be what battles to highlight, easing back on the promotion of other events and figuring out how to handle the finish. Those topics may have been discussed in meetings this week.

This post will serve to host your comments on the ESPN coverage of the Sprint Cup Series race from Pocono Raceway. To add your TV-related comment, just click on the comments button below.

one way the potential rain helps the race: they RACE all day after the halfway mark.

Ken-Michigan said...

VERY surprised the rain is holding off !

But hope it does !

JJ made a little Chad, like a Flat Stanley and carried him around and posed him. Posted pics on Twitter, was hilarious.

Charlie said...

The mini chad on twitter was really funny.

KudzuCarl said...

They have a mini-Cheatin' Chad standup at the local Lowes. I wanted to tear his head off the other day but my son talked me out of it.

Jonathan said...

ok im back, was outside getting a tan having a few buds have to say wow MRN knows how to call a race, even Pocono that was awsome hearing JR battle it out on the radio they sure have passion when they call a race.

Ken-Michigan said...

Glad to see ESPN show the radar a couple times today when weather is a potential issue.

Always thought when precip is possible it should be presented as part of the story.

Bestwick is by far the best in the business keeping viewers up to date on many stories / issues.

48's a.....{commercial}

GinaV24 said...

kudzu, it's gotten better as the race has gone on, camera work was pitiful at the beginning.

what the heck was that? the cut to commercial in mid sentence?

10 away from pit stops according to the 24 with rain coming.

Ken-Michigan said...

Missing pass / battle for the lead while they play promos.....WOW

Caution for rain

JM

GinaV24 said...

rain!

GinaV24 said...

cars coming down pit road.

GinaV24 said...

so not going to listen to them talk to chaddie again.

Anonymous said...

The ONLY thing worse than a race at Pocono is a rain delay at Pocono. Im gunna give up

JM

Roland, I agree on what would happen with the weather if the Fox Trio was there. Darrell admitted earlier in the year the crew carries tablets to the booth and I wonder if Larry puts a link to the radar for the local track on his tablet so he can watch the radar on his computer or if Barry Landis sets up a radar screen as an option on the Fox monitors.

Larry wrote in his book he was burned at the 1992 Southern 500 by someone misreading the radar -- maybe that influences his style of reading radar.

Ken-Michigan said...

Come back for the finish - between 5 and 6pm.

Roadgeek Adam said...

Well at least we made it 123 laps rather than 0.

Daly Planet Editor said...

ESPN scheduled until 5PM, window open until 7PM. No lights at Pocono, 90 min minimum to dry track.

Charlie said...

The weather channel graphic I have shows more behind this one cell.

James said...

You have to give AB credit, second week, not so great a track, but he keeps you in the game with updates at the breaks, shows the leader when they come back, it a whole lot better IMO. The best part is he can ask a question so that the analyst can expand on it, not like Marty who is too stupid to look out the window to see the race.

Roland said...

If Joey wins, which it looks like he will, No one can give him any crap about this one. He lucked into his first win. Today he started on pole, led the most laps i think, has been top 5 all day. and drove his butt off on 2 tires to stay ahead when the rains came. Job well done. Lets hope Nascar doesnt keep us around till 7 only to call it. Lets call it now and be done with it. Im gonna go watch the end of the Braves game.

Jonathan said...

I love how Brad calls the wild card spots the "lucky spots" I use to like Brad but I agree with the rest of you he needs to go or change he sounds like a teenager

Jonsthan said...

there not lucky spots these guys are going it at 110% for those last 2 spots in the Chase its not luck that will get you there not with this new points system..

GinaV24 said...

OK, I'll go get something done - listening to rusty and brad for a rain delay is NOT my idea of fun.

saltsburgtrojanfan said...

Remember 1991 JD. Both races were plagued by rain, one was shortened by rain. The race that was shortened by rain had the drivers actually go out on the track after they dried the track. And just over a half a lap before they were originally going to get the green flag, it started to rain again and they stopped the race. Rusty Wallace won that rain shortened race.

That rain shortened race in 91 was a welcome relief for that area that had not seen significant rainfall in a long time, Bob Jenkins said he heard that the most recent significant rainfall was at the june race.

So Pocono has had a long history of rain delays and shortenings.

GinaV24 said...

SBTF, cool story, I'd never heard that, but it does always seem to rain at Pocono.

Anonymous said...

OH! Rusty kissing "Mr. Hendrick's bottom! The crew changes have worked? Sure Rust bucket! Sure!

He's makin me sick

JM

GinaV24 said...

now it's storming here in NJ. gonna get out.

Roadgeek Adam said...

Its always the August race that seems to be a rain magnet. Remember it rained while cleaning up the Busch/Sadler wreck last year. Rusty Wallace's questionable finish in 1993, etc.

Daly Planet Editor said...

NASCAR hanging tough, don't look for a decision for an hour or so.

Roadgeek Adam said...

Gina: I've got nothing yet here in Jersey, Still sunny. I am going out for photography though

Jonathan said...

Pocono is 50/50 with rain but you have to say we have been blessed with beautiful weather this year

but i do feel bad for the fans Jr was a coming and they were loving every secound of it.

do you think we will get this in???

oldnewenglander said...

"Don't Stop Believin'" is playing in the background of Bob Osborne and Carl Edwards.

I guess they are close enough to Jersey for Journey songs.

Charlie said...

This rain delay at least gives Espn a chance to run the commercials they missed during pre-race.

GinaV24 said...

Adam, hope you get some good pics. It sounds like it's off to the west of me.

GinaV24 said...

I guess I should be happy that NASCAR isn't quick to make a decision to call the race, but having sat through various rain delays AND track drying, it is one heck of a bore!

they just put up an announcement on ABC about the storm for burlington, mercer with a high wind warning. I just went up and battened down the hatches. Might be a bumpy night.

Anonymous said...

About 4 hours, 15 minutes of daylight remaining ... anyone up for NASCAR on ESPN Classic? Doubt they'd bump Yankees vs Red Sox.

GinaV24 said...

Harvick, gotta put 10 weeks together. And that in a nutshell is why I hate the chase.

Roadgeek Adam said...

Gina: Am not particularly far, I live in the northern ends of Middlesex County, probably answer why its still dry.

Jonathan said...

im thinking we will get this race in

Jonathan said...

Gina hope you will be ok but you seem to be ready

GinaV24 said...

Adam, you might catch the storm if it moves your way, apparently it is stretching from Tullytown to Trenton.

I am happy as long as the power stays on!

GinaV24 said...

well, I got booted off internet there for a few minutes when the power blinked. Had to restart everything!

Oh well, at least it's back up. Whats the estimated time to restart the race?

GinaV24 said...

thanks, jonathan, it's moving off now and the sun just came out. It was fine except for the one "blink" when the power went down. Now if no trees or cars running into poles impact things, I'm good for this round.

I'm pretty good at this storm prep thing these days. had a lot of practice.

GinaV24 said...

AJ apparently has issues with being short. Wow, how exciting.

jerry said...

Uh oh Versus didn't show the whole field at the line. Go get'em.

Charlie said...

I wonder what the meeting in LA is all about for the Fox people.

Roadgeek Adam said...

Drivers going to their cars in a few minutes.

Becky [@hightechredneck] said...

Has MRN come back yet? The online stream I use hasn't come back yet. Wondering if I need to find another.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Charlie, what meeting are you talking about?

GinaV24 said...

I haven't heard the trackpass scanners come up yet either.

GinaV24 said...

scanners just came back up, MRN should be back online, too.

Anonymous said...

Raceview scanners working the last few minutes, not a lot of talking going on.

Becky [@hightechredneck] said...

I was listening to the officials on the scanners during the delay. Got Dale Jr & Truex back. But my online stream for MRN is still playing music. Guess I need to search for another.

Charlie said...

Jeff Hammond on twitter about an hour ago said - I LA for Nascar meeting about 2012. I figure it should read - In LA for Nascar meeting about 2012. DW is there to.

Charlie said...

Hammond said he was playing golf with Fox people and DW.

jerry said...

Editor,

DW tweeted several times this weekend that the FOX group is meeting in LA in preparation for 2012.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Got ya, annual meeting for FOX (not SPEED) team.

Daly Planet Editor said...

ESPN already into SportsCenter, now face with going into 7PM Baseball Tonight.

This is going to be fun.

Ken-Michigan said...

Very interesting...

even if it goes all green, 75 minutes of racing.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Buddies as sportsgrid.com have a recap of the ESPN glitches from the pre-race up.

Daly Planet Editor said...

oops....at SportsGrid.com

GinaV24 said...

JD, your troll has come to pay us all a visit at the restart of the race.

PammH said...

you know how you could follow along on twitter during the race? not anymore for me....new twitter is incredibly slow on my computer..:(

Daly Planet Editor said...

Just a child (teen) with nothing better to do. Hope he is getting a lesson in racing with all your comments.

CRZ said...

Dale Jr. lost like 10 spots on that pit stop. That would have been good for somebody to mention.

Anonymous said...

A bunch of baseball fans in the north-east are about to start making some phone calls depending on how long this race goes.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Just tweeted with the SportsCenter guys. In the studio with the lights off. Crew and anchors watching the race.

Jonathan said...

woohoo this is fun now....

Anonymous said...

Surely you know by now that tv tells you nothing. Only with Twitter do you have a clue of what is going on.

LS

GinaV24 said...

CRZ, I was surprised they didn't mention Jr's pit stop either.

Anonymous said...

I haven't been watchinng the all day and just caught the restart. Is there a new fence next to the trees? I remeber they used to blow around...don't remember the fence.

Jonathan said...

Anon yes after a wreck last year w Kasey Kahne going up and over the wall they put up it up all the way around the track

Daly Planet Editor said...

Little late in the telecast for soundbites.

Daly Planet Editor said...

NASCAR said they would not return without a new fence.

After the ARCA crash, I bet we see even more changes. Car went over inside barrier.

GinaV24 said...

well, there are lots of places they need to install fences. Seems like wrecks at Pocono are always big and ugly.

glenc1 said...

I'm surprised that they didn't ask them to put a fence in years ago considering the animal problems. Hard for a deer to jump a catch fence.

Anonymous said...

At what lap was the last commercial break? Seems like its been some time...

bozo said...

Pretty ironic that adam scott may win this golf tournament with williams on the bag

Anonymous said...

If NASCAR does not stop these long single file runs with no passing, it want matter what network is carrying it. Nobody will be watching. LS

bozo said...

do you think nascar will make iowa put safer barriers on the inside wall after yesterdays wreck?

Daly Planet Editor said...

Yes, I think Iowa will make changes.

GinaV24 said...

glen, that's true, but the daggone groundhogs get underneath.

Bill said...

Amazing how long it's been since a commercial.

Buschseries61 said...

I came home & was surprised to see the race was STILL on.

Have to give Pocono credit, the spread out racing is helping me get to sleep.

Jonathan said...

hmm didnt see the Arca race or Truck race to early for me on a Sunday lol but I feel they need to make the walls higher! JD this talk reminds me that the brickyard dosent have safer barriers I got to go on the track right after the pit out and there was only a solid concrete wall no safer barrier why is this???? They reach fast speeds at INDY.. Every track should have safer barriers no questions asked I dont care how safe you think it is

Anonymous said...

Pocono needs to be shortened up.350 Miles is a good start.

Anonymous said...

Thanks on the fence, guess I missed it (or the race) in June. I remember Sadlers wreck and then saw him take it bad later in Dover. Seems a lot of fixing is needed there at pocono.

Charlie said...

@bozo Adam Scott won the golf match with Steve Williams as his caddie.
(Steve Williams use to be Tiger Woods caddie.)
Steve Williams races Saloon and Super Saloon class cars in New Zealand when he is not doing golf.

Anonymous said...

maybe ESPN will go side-by-side with the race and Baseball Tonight.

Jonathan said...

Anon Baseball tonight is an hour away 30 laps at Pocono dosent take an hour

Daly Planet Editor said...

Going to be interesting for sure in about 45 minutes.

Buschseries61 said...

Jon - Indy does have safer barriers. We have to remember how expensive they are and, in reality, can't cover every wall on the track. These cars always find the worst possible area to hit anyway, there will always be a chance at injury. As long as barriers are placed in the areas most vulnerable for danger, I don't see a major issue.

Ken-Michigan said...

I really enjoy the more frequent use of splits screens since ESPN started Cup coverage.

The split screen would be very useful in the closing laps for those viewers who wonder where their driver finishes the race & follow other battles coming to the flag.

Karen said...

Pamm H, JD, Anyone,

What's the difference in the old twitter vs. the new twitter? Sorry OT, but curious.

GinaV24 said...

Wow, who knew the troll doesn't know how to spell "idiot"?

PammH said...

Karen-it's reallllllly slow is the most noticable thing. It looks different also.

Anonymous said...

JD- tarp off in Boston. Sox's taking BP Game is on for 8pm. They are taping the show open. Hope rain is done in PA.

Mike P.

GinaV24 said...

I can't say I particularly like the "new" twitter. It does run much slower and I have high speed internet so there's no reason for it. Also if I have 2 many windows open it will massively bog down the rest of my computer.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Man, think the troll will ever get a girlfriend? That boy needs some perspective....and a life.

Karen said...

Pamm H,

Thanks. Was wondering about the format, font, etc. Guess I still have the old.

Jonathan said...

Busch I have a pic that shows there isnt any safer barrier at least where I was. look at the concrete wall and this is the front stretch

JD hope I can post this here a link to my facebook page w pics from Indy if not sorry just delete the post

Like to see this replay.

Bill said...

No commercial?

Bill said...

Great job, ESPN on catching that wreck.

GinaV24 said...

JD, I don't care if troll boy gets a boyfriend or a girlfriend as long as he learns to spell.

Anonymous said...

when was last commercials? approx?

Daly Planet Editor said...

Jon, it won't link on blogspot.

What Busch is trying to say is that NASCAR mandates the safety.

Many tracks are multi-purpose and often have barriers that move for different configurations.

Areas for SAFER are mandated by NASCAR's own track safety group.

Appreciate your passion for that.

Daly Planet Editor said...

ESPN only ran local commercials. No paid inventory has been run.

Very weird choice.

GinaV24 said...

wow, that was some replay. where were the spotters?

Anonymous said...

They covered the 4/42 wreck well. Nice camera shots explained what happened

JM

Anonymous said...

showed spotters talking too. Nice job guys!

JM

Bill said...

Oh great. WE'RE about ready to get a storm here. Prolly lose Directv in a few minutes.

Anonymous said...

I am about five minutes behind on DVR but long rain delay must have used up a lot of commercial spots.

GinaV24 said...

hmmm lots of empty seats showing in that shot!

Karen said...

Pamm H, I have high speed, too, but this laptop is bogging down a lot. So if the appearance is different, that's how I'd know if I had the new twitter.

OSBORNK said...

Sure looks lonely in most of the stands.

Charlie said...

I thought they said it is hard for the spotter to see that part of the track from there but not sure.

Daly Planet Editor said...

New Twitter has been killing my laptop today!

Actually had to use my Sprint phone!

Going to switch to Tweetdeck this week.

Karen said...

GinaV24, that post was for you.

Charlie said...

I use twitter a little bit and I never knew there was a new twitter.

Charlie said...

15 Laps to go.

Charlie said...

Why did they zoom in as we watched 4 wide go into the turn. Zoom out.

oldnewenglander said...

Any idea how ESPN plans to split crews next week? Just realized that they've been dropping the Loudon IndyCar race from the ESPN motorsports calendar all day, even though that race is on ABC.

GinaV24 said...

Karen, which one? the one where he talked about smoking pot? LOL, be still my heart.

Daly Planet Editor said...

I'll get that info on Monday when the crew sheets come out and will pass it along.

OSBORNK said...

I'm gad we are seeing cars other than the leader. Nice change.

GinaV24 said...

charlie, yeah, I know, it was a nice shot and then it was gone!

Anonymous said...

WOW...when was the last commercial break?

Daly Planet Editor said...

Wonder if they are having the same problem as the pre-race? Lots of dollars going away for ESPN in the last hour.

PammH said...

Karen-it looks different. It takes up the whole screen. You'll know when you're switched & they said everyone would be done within a wk.

GinaV24 said...

LOL, that's why I was enjoying the race so much. AB in the booth and no commercial interruptions!

Anonymous said...

This lack of commercials is just not right - actually its wonderful but Fox and TNT have commercials EVERY yellow flag - something wrong here.

rich said...

It has been amazing to see no commercials!

Charlie said...

ha ha @JM

GinaV24 said...

JM, I agree, the 2nd race was better. I still think this race is too long.

Bill said...

I lost my tv right as the 48/22 confrontation started. Any punches thrown?

rich said...

Wow, great shots of the finish. Maybe they do learn from their mistakes.

Charlie said...

No not much Bill as far as I saw it. I am sure you will see a replay a million times.

Daly Planet Editor said...

How about ESPN showing the leaders all racing off the final corner and across the line!! Nice job.

saltsburgtrojanfan said...

OK Why isn't Dr Punch interviewing the winner

Karen said...

Now that I'm a 48 fan after his twitter prowess, I hope JJ kicks Ku Busch's butt.

glenc1 said...

I foresee a crying towel in JJ's future....

Bill said...

Rats. I wanted to see Kurt do to Jimmie what Spencer did to him!

saltsburgtrojanfan said...

ESPN, Dr. Jerry Punch does the winner's interview from here on in.

OSBORNK said...

The second race today is my favorite race of the year so far. The right driver won and the late camera work was outstanding. ESPN showed the action on the track rather than just follow the leader and the confrontations on the track were shown. Great.
