Live Blogging Sprint Cup Series From New Hampshire (ESPN - 1PM ET)

The Fords are nowhere in sight at New Hampshire. The Roush guys are scratching their heads as the other manufacturers dominate. The weather is good, the track is slick and tempers are hot. What a perfect recipe for a good NASCAR race.

Nicole Briscoe will open the TV day with Brad Daugherty and Rusty Wallace alongside from the ESPN Infield Pit Studio. Briscoe has been solid while directing traffic on the air, but Wallace is struggling without a viable partner for conversation in this setting. Daugherty is a NASCAR cheerleader this season and nothing more.

Allen Bestwick will call the race with Dale Jarrett and Andy Petree alongside. As fans saw with ESPN's Chicagoland coverage, Bestwick is sometimes limited in his ability to call the race by the pictures selected by ESPN. Perhaps today Bestwick will be able to look out the window instead of only at the TV screen.

On pit road are Jamie Little, Dave Burns, Vince Welch and Dr. Jerry Punch. In this New World Order of NASCAR where few cars experience mechanical troubles and passing is limited, the role of the pit reporter had been diminished significantly. It should be interesting to see if this tough and very flat track changes that for one race.

Tim Brewer is in the Tech Garage and is completely out of things to say. He almost seems resigned to his fate as he repeats the same basic points over and over again. Brewer has a lot more to offer, but the Tech Garage has lost its magic.

ESPN has a signature style of showing races called "hyper-tight." Once the start or a restart is over, the director immediately begins the process of tightening the camera views until they are tight shots of one or two cars. ESPN said this approach works better for HDTV viewers, unfortunately it misses most of the racing.

New Hampshire Motor Speedway is a pot that boils over about halfway through the race. Contact is going to happen, unless the field simply strings out and uses pit road for track position. In the Camping World Truck Series race on Saturday, only six trucks finished on the lead lap.

This post will serve to host your comments about the NASCAR on ESPN coverage of the Sprint Cup Series race from New Hampshire. To add your TV-related opinion, just click on the comments button below. Thanks for stopping by.

sheesh, well if they can't show us the race, they will show us the canned stuff.

Eagles now getting crushed by the giants.

Anonymous said...

Giants SCORE!

GinaV24 said...

finally going to nonstop commercials, this would be a good time to actually start showing the race.

Anonymous said...

The whole race coverage seems lost already. I've almost lost interest in watching the race with how confused the announcers are today.

Sally said...

Gina, you know hat all they show is he leader by himself when the ads are on!

Daly Planet Editor said...

Did you just see that video game ad?

GinaV24 said...

ah but we get the race in the LITTLE screen.

Buschseries61 said...

Some of Bestwick's scripted questions are ridiculous. I think ESPN has talked about the non-Chasers racing carefully against the Chasers for five years now. But we have no choice but to listen to Jarrett's long winded reponse.

Anonymous said...

This is one boring race. Can't pass on this track

GinaV24 said...

Sally that's true, so the little screen is fine in the world of espn

Anonymous said...

More action in the pits than on the track. There was a spin and I MISSED IT. Oh wait his teammate spun him.

GinaV24 said...

gee, for a minute there, I thought that was gordon and johnson.

Doing everything I could to stop? really?

Buschseries61 said...

And as usual, Jarrett gives his politically correct analysis of the wreck. Nobody's fault.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Bet Bestwick is out of his mind. DJ is now overshadowed by Andy who is honest in his response to issues.

Sally said...

By now, Carl should just have a sign posted in his rear window that says, "I didn't mean to hit you." He could use it frequently.

GinaV24 said...

yeah, DJ is too pc for my taste, too.

Anonymous said...

Am i seeing this right? They're showing more than 2 cars racing?

Anonymous said...

During commercials, could ESPN make the "LIVE" screen any smaller?

Oops, I shouldn't give them any ideas.....

I love this tweet from pete pistone

"Non stop coverage and races online - don't have much tolerance these days for #nascar television coverage complaining"

Jonathan said...

HEY EVERYONE!!! I love NH one of my favorite tracks look at this racing!!! LOVE IT

Espn in my mind doing a great job showing the great racing all around the track sat and actually watched the first 185 laps

Sally said...

He can say that because he doesn't watch the races on TV. Duh.

Anonymous said...

Pete is media. He will not ever criticize another media outlet.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Pete's paycheck has a NASCAR logo. Enough said.

Anonymous said...

Obviously Pete needs to join our support group because he's insane.

Buschseries61 said...

ESPN has shown more passes the last 10 laps than the previous 180.

Anonymous said...

They're showing more passing on the track because the 4PM games are on now.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Just imagine if ESPN had been using that aerial view on restarts and during segment.

Just imagine if they had run through the field every 30 minutes.

Just imagine if they used in-cars when the racing was single file and did not use them when cars were passing.

Just imagine....

Anonymous said...

Imagine.

It's The Age of Aquarius in Bristol, Connecticut.

Anonymous said...

I can't JD because I need more time in our support group to get to that point to be able to imagine/picture that happening.

Buschseries61 said...

lol Jamie got confused on who she was covering.

Becky [@hightechredneck] said...

Is the "up to speed" stuff supposed to be a random set of drivers? How about doing them in order and not skipping any? Or am I expecting too much again?

Anonymous said...

OMG Chad and Jimmie arguing over the radio.

Jimm57 said...

Is everything Mikey does shameless? Napa, Arons? etc?

jerry said...

Pete has a right to his opinion.

KoHoSo said...

Imagine?

Imagine there's no Brewer
It's easy if you try
No Wallace in the studio
Saying that hot rod can fly
Imagine all the people
Watching a good race

Imagine there's good camera work
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to miss or be confused about
And no "If the race ended now" too
Imagine all the people
Watching a race in peace

You may say that I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join The Daly Planet
And the world will be as one

Imagine no DW
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or Digger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people
Loving NASCAR all over the world

You may say that I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join The Daly Planet
And the world will live as one

If ESPN has no more scruples than to edit a radio transmission what would stop them from fabricating a radio transmission?

Daly Planet Editor said...

At NH the pot usually boils toward the end. Lots of times it gets ugly.

Just what NASCAR likes...

Anonymous said...

Exactly KoHoSo!

Sally said...

BRAVO! That took some talent KOHOSO!

KudzuCarl said...

KoHoSo -- beautiful!

Anonymous said...

OT in the Detroit/MN game!

Buschseries61 said...

LMAO KoHoSo! That's great!

KoHoSo said...

Sally...nah, just a lifetime wasted on listening to Tom Lehrer, Allan Sherman, and Weird Al Yankovic records. ;-)

KudzuCarl said...

Another set of commercials?? Matched up with a tight in-car shot of a driver?

Anonymous said...

I hope Espn has learned not to put Jamie in Victory Lane with a mic. We shall see.....

PammH said...

I'm sorry to complain, but WTH is the point of showing a split screen & the Nascar side is an IN-CAR shot???? Sorry Pete-don't agree w/you at all!

Sally said...

KoHoSo...you have excellent taset...and learned well. Thanks for that...made me grin.

Anonymous said...

Heck with Nascar this Detroit game is in OT.

Sally said...

Hey, Junior drove by Kyle...again! And I didn't see it...again. guess that proves there is passing in races that we never see.

Anonymous said...

How can Nascar compete against the NFL. Lions in OT, Bills knock off the Pats and that's just the 1PM games.

Daly Planet Editor said...

They have to make these races an all out effort. Insert excitement and let Allen call the action like the radio guys.

Use the right pictures and follow the right stories. NASCAR has been on TV for decades.

Anonymous said...

I love listening to MRN radio. They are so exciting to listen to on the radio. What you hear on the radio is NOTHING like what TV is showing.

KoHoSo said...

Anonymous 4:25...while the NFL will be king of the sports landscape for the foreseeable future, NASCAR could do better by putting a more exciting product on the track and making sure their television partners show it in a proper manner.

Unfortunately, for reasons we already covered earlier in today's comments, I don't see that happening until at least 2014.

Buschseries61 said...

Man, the director is not working with Bestwick. Sounds like he wanted to hold the shot to see the distance from Kahne to Gordon. But the camera stayed with Kahne.

Roadgeek Adam said...

Damn it Jeff....

Sorry for my quietness, I've got a hoarse voice from congestion and trying to rest my brain.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Busch, you can hear the frustration from Bestwick.

GinaV24 said...

OK, it's nice that they are showing one car at a time during the commercials but I still need to mute the TV.

I've come to realize that I don't watch ads on TV any more. If I record something I FF'd thrugh them, if I watch it live, I change the channel or go do something else.

GinaV24 said...

5X had better watch out. Logano doesn't have much to lose.

Daly Planet Editor said...

I hope business picks up a bit. This is rough.

GinaV24 said...

are they kidding? another commercial? even in side by side mode, it's still overload.

back to the GB game

Anonymous said...

This race has been a yawner. Somehow, my recollection is that this was a more exciting race???

GinaV24 said...

Anon 4:03 and comments like that from pistol pete are why I don't read anything he writes.

He's been branded by NASCAR and had imbibed so much kool aid his eyes are purple.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Clint has a little history at this track...

Jimm57 said...

almost 4 laps and another commercial break?

GinaV24 said...

and I'm sure Bowyer would like a win as he's leaving RCR. Always good to take into a new job.

Adam, sorry that you aren't feeling well. Lots of that going around - all the wet NJ weather!

Jonathan, how are you doing? Did you get back to see the race in Chi on Monday?

GinaV24 said...

Ha, they are trying to promo the nationwide series as if there are angry young men instead of a bunch of cup drivers taking over every week.

terri said...

Did they ever explain how Clint got to the front?

GinaV24 said...

crap, Gustafson thinks the 24 is short on fuel again! dammit.

GinaV24 said...

I don't even want to watch racing if it is all going to come down to fuel mileage. That's NOT racing.

AncientRacer said...

I did not get to see Monday's race so until today I did not have a real idea about how E$PN intended to handle the "NASCAR Non-Stop" stuff Until today. They did a LOT of promoting it and so far the promotion and the reality seems to remind me of an old rule I have viv a vis movies: "Any movie with too many big name stars is more than likely than not to be a dog."

So far the "Non-stop" thing seems to be living up to that as there seem to be MORE commercials while I squint at the little box with the race in it.

Or maybe I am imagininging it because I am old and crabby natured. :)

KoHoSo said...

I'll be interested to see the commercial breakdown on this race. It sure seems like ESPN is using their version of side-by-side to cram in more ads.

Buschseries61 said...

Mark Martin tire down! NASCAR Nonstop has been very useful today.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Hi AR, that live TV box is pretty small!

Anonymous said...

There are some real surprises in the top twelve (Biffle,Hamlin, Reagan, etc), but you'd never know it watching television.

w17scott said...

Andy has been eating DJ's lunch for some time now ...so safe to say, "DJ is out to lunch" ...starting to sound like he's all hat, no cattle

Jimm57 said...

love watching the 48 slide & spin!

Buschseries61 said...

Wow! Jimmie Johnson!

GinaV24 said...

Anon 4:51 that's because all the chasers are saving fuel - I think

Anonymous said...

DJ=vanilla

Darcie said...

Without getting graphic, what did Kurt say that he had to apologize for???

Anonymous said...

Just my opinion, but the first two races of the Chase have been a total joke.

GinaV24 said...

Good for Kyle, not taking anything from weasley

GinaV24 said...

Anon, I haven't seen anything funny about the 2 races so far at all. Downright awful

Buschseries61 said...

@ Darcie - I believe it had something to do with his pre-race issues. He wasn't in the mood for an interview and let that reporter know with his words. That's what I read.

GinaV24 said...

geez, DJ "drivers doing their best". Gag me with a spoon.

Sally said...

Jumior is up to 16th. He should have plenty of gas, right?

Anonymous said...

The booth just doesn't tell us how the lap times stack up. Espn is consistently lousy in this regard. This has just been terrible TV coverage.

Sophia said...

AR

it is a small racing box on the side by sides. I tried it on 10 in tv in kitchen...racing looks like a postage stamp!! :)

I've very old eyes for my age (I could never use a smart phone as the fonts are just too small)

Just turned on race after Reds win and I see way too many SPLIT SCREENS...sheesh....between that and the zoom we are "seeing nothing but chaos"

Shame...been reading on twitter though what's going on.

Debby said...

DJ was my driver, but he needs to "wake up" in the booth! In fact, all of them need to wake up!

Anonymous said...

I still believe Nascrap dictates the content for the booth. ie-if the booth gave lap times, Nascrap will lose $ from their online apps
It is all about the $$ not the quality of the broadcast for the fans

Daly Planet Editor said...

Well, at least the Smoke story is a good one!

If you are leaving before the post-race, give us a race TV wrap-up comment on the new post now up.

Jimm57 said...

Another snotty ending w/regard to camera shots

What a mess. Was everybody asleep?

Buschseries61 said...

They held the shot a little longer than Chicagoland.

Roadgeek Adam said...

Well Jeff gets 4th, a solid finish, picked up most laps led.

ChrisK said...

Another ridiculous race. Football is looking better and better.

GinaV24 said...

well, good for Tony, maybe he's figured out the 10 race strategy necessary.

Wish that gustafson had his act together on the fuel. Gordon had the car, just not the fuel.

Terrible coverage by ESPN.

I'll be at Dover next week so hopefully it will be a decent race - a real one not a fuel mileage one.

Anonymous said...

debby,
i agree. seems he retired and checked out!

Anonymous said...

This is exactly why I don't like the Chase format. For 26 races, Stewart stinks up the place. The Chase starts and Tony wins two races. I'm ambivalent on Stewart---not my favorite, not on my poop list.

AncientRacer said...

Yes, the Smoke story is a good one.

Gina. I was glad Weasley had a "problem" there, and glad #24 did so well. Just a little miscue on the gas calculations prior to the last stop. He had it until then

Sophia. On The kitchen TV I could not SEE the box!

GinaV24 said...

Adam, that moved the 24 to 5th in points which I guess is why AG was being careful Good job there.

GinaV24 said...

Ancient, yes, I was cheering for your boy in that case!

I'm happy that Jeff finished this week, I spent the entire week last week moping.

Michael Stoffel said...

What's the dead weight comment from Tony mean? Who'd he let go?

Daly Planet Editor said...

I am sure the media will ask about his dead weight comment.

Media center is live at NASCAR.com and "Victory Lane" is on SPEED when ESPN is over...

Daly Planet Editor said...

Going to move comments up to the new post.

Thanks for hanging with us today for a very loooooong race day.
