Live Blogging Sprint Cup Series From Charlotte (ABC - 7PM ET)

Coverage switches from ESPN over to ABC for this night race. That means no RaceBuddy or Watch ESPN app as ABC is a broadcast network and has exclusive rights. There will be ESPN Nonstop commercials in the second half of the telecast.

Some ABC local stations might be showing local news during the pre-race show, but all will join for the race which has total national coverage live. Please let us know if any station does not join for the green flag.

Mike Massaro is handling the hosting duties for the Infield Pit Studio. Rusty Wallace and Brad Daugherty are the analysts. Tim Brewer is in the Tech Garage.

Rusty and Brad are once again going to be asked to talk about the Chase, but not neglect the race. It's a tough mix that ESPN has struggled with for years. The script this week may be Jimmie Johnson, but keep an eye on the topics featured in the pre-race. They often become the script for the race coverage.

Allen Bestwick, Dale Jarrett and Andy Petree have been on the air for three days now on ESPN working hard. We will see how much gas they have left in the tank for a couple of hours of night racing on the ABC side. The good side is they handled the practice and qualifying coverage, the downside is they have to be exhausted.

Jamie Little and Vince Welch are out in Las Vegas for the final IndyCar race of the season. Shannon Spake and Mike Massaro are working pit road for the race with Dr. Jerry Punch and Dave Burns. Pit road could be a lonely place if this becomes another gas mileage race or a hectic mess if incidents happen on the track.

ESPN has a great Nationwide Series race and a rough Cup telecast last week. Somehow, the Cup races seem to keep the tradition of "hper-tight" coverage rolling along. CMS has a ton of action on the tight two-groove track and it's easy for TV to miss a lot of it with the focus on only one or two cars at a time. Keep an eye out for how ESPN produces the actual racing.

The quad-splits for caution flag pitstops are still outstanding. The ESPN Nonstop makes a big difference. Having Allen Bestwick has made a huge difference and closed the information gap. Punch has been outstanding on pit road. Those are the good things.

The bad is that ESPN still tries to work back to the stories from the pre-race show. Rather than let the racing just happen, it's been about the topics selected in advance and then forced into the telecasts. That has alienated fans and TV viewers.

So, here we go. This post will serve to host your opinion about the ABC coverage of the Sprint Cup Series race from the Charlotte Motor Speedway. To add your comment, just click on the comments button below. Thanks!

Kevin Harvick is 12th Allen

Anonymous said...

Did I just hear AB say that Kevin Harvick was leading????

Anonymous said...

anybody going to martinsville

Anonymous said...

As I said earlier, AB comes across as this happy-go-lucky guy that doesn't let anything bother him or take anything too seriously. He needs to get his head in the game.

Daly Planet Editor said...

The leaders were just cycling through. He got it back together.

I think ESPN tired these guys out over the last three days. Just my opinion.

Charlie said...

They show you a pass in replay with 3 cars but only show you one or two cars live. Come on.

Need Tony to win tonight A driver that MIGHT tell the truth THIS IS BORING and I LOVE Racing!!!!

ChrisK said...

Hermie Sadler is like seven laps down. He's a rolling road block. They parked Andy Lally for this?

Anonymous said...

ohhhhh boy here comes jj ,have we seen this b4

Roland said...

PRN: "Lets pick up the battle for the lead, Jimmie Johnson stalking Matt Kenseth"

ESPN: cuts to commercial

Buschseries61 said...

Chris - Sadler = $. Lally parked last week with no sponsor. The $ tank is almost dry by October.

Anonymous said...

What's up with those ugly yellow walls? Is this Servicemaster Motor Speedway?

Anonymous said...

TRG is a "lean" team....their display car, a Ford, is really last year's Chevy with a decal on top. :)

Anonymous said...

Biffle gets the Lucky Dog for debris!!!!! You can't make this stuff up! Time's running out. Have to get Biffle back on the lead lap. Let's hear it for the WWE! Swing your chains and yell..."We're going racin' tonight!"

vettesnfrets said...

I'll tell ya if someone would dub the PRN/MRN audio over the tv race cast we would have a great race week in and out.

Anonymous said...

aj have a good run tonight

Anonymous said...

I am kind of sad to see racing represented this way. Does Brian France know or care what fans think of this sport?

Anonymous said...

What do the times on the pit split do if you don't see the whole pit stop?

Rambo M. said...

Anon @ 9:12:
Sprint's gimmick I presume. Not nearly as eye-catching as red and white, is it?

jerry said...

I like that shot of all the cars coming off pit lane

Daly Planet Editor said...

This restart is going to be iteresting. Got to get it now.

jerry said...

Kind of hard to gauge what the fans think when a thousand different fans want a thousand different things.

Little side-drafting festival.

mark martins car is a spotters dream

Daly Planet Editor said...

Hope they follow up on this one. Hub issue for HMS?

Anonymous said...

why do these issues only happen to the 5 car? R & D for hendrick is a pretty tough job...

jerry said...

Nice job by Petree he was right there on the bearing explanation.

Roland said...

I think the debris was Brad Keselowski's golden horsehoe.

Anonymous said...

Interaction between Andy and Tim?

jimm57 said...

Seemed to me they were really racing very hard at that last restart. Position is everything before they get strung out and cant pass

Anonymous said...

lots of seats in 4

jimm57 said...

big section of 4 is family section, no alc allowed :-(

Anonymous said...

I understand about everybody wanting something different in racing. I will tell you this though, I had a nephew that raced in Nationwide series and met alot of different drivers. He was part of the 16yr old team at Daytona a few years ago. I got to meet Boris Said, Paul Newman and numerous others. Everything was not about a corporation. I know what makes the world go round but there should be some balance. By the way Go Tony!

Anonymous said...

Can you believe we're at the half way point??

ChrisK said...

Been having some intermittent problems with blogger. Page sometimes won't re-load. Anybody else?

jimm57 said...

I would'nt mind if Tony gets another win tonite

Daly Planet Editor said...

Chris, I promise we will not be using this next season. Sorry for the old technology, but the price is right and everyone can use it.

Anonymous said...

Chrisk Hit refresh alot!

Charlie said...

So guys why not talk about the race.

jerry said...

addington is a goob man to put up with that bs.

Roadgeek Adam said...

JD, then definitely you will be losing me. Sorry, but that really isn't fair. Not everyone likes it, much to your thought.

Anonymous said...

charlie ok kbusch is complainug about passing what happened to this track?

ChrisK said...

Have they even mentioned Marcos Ambrose, running fourth? I guess since he's not in the chase...

Anonymous said...

did anybody notice that BofA is sponsorinf this race

Becky [@hightechredneck] said...

This 'NASCAR Non-Stop" is useless when they only show one car at a time. Sheesh.

KudzuCarl said...

If Addington goes after the season, I hope he punches Kurt in the mouth on the way out the door. You know that he wants to.

Kiteman11 said...

The 21 car is there. Anybody?

Anonymous said...

"Objects in mirror..." I have a 40" HD TV...can't see that window!

Charlie said...

I met the guys in the booth. There is a race going on.

Anonymous said...

I like the split screen showing live racing. Will they cut to race if something happens?

Sally said...

Addington must be a masochist to crew chief for BOTH Busch brothers! He went from the frying pan....

Anonymous said...

5 laps covering KuBu. I guess it strung out that quick.

The racing box in the "nonstop" coverage should have some kind of title that says what position you are watching.

ChrisK said...

The side by side box is smaller than it was last week.

Anonymous said...

Would not mind at all if Steve Ad. has words with Kyle

Anonymous said...

What was that a thumbnail of in that small window?

Daly Planet Editor said...

Anon, if you want to take a moment and get a blue nick we can see which comments are from you.

Charlie said...

what car did the pop can come off of.

Anonymous said...

I think Dale Jr. had one thing right. These races need to be shortened. Go Tony!

Anonymous said...

Right there is the problem with coverage. Bayne passes Hamlin and they're telling a story and not calling the action.

Dennis said...

I heard what Kurt said but what did Addington say in reply?

Anonymous said...

Does anybody know when Hamlins contract is up? He seems to always have an excuse

jimm57 said...

Addington is denying the rumor according to Jayski's. Seasons not over ...yet

jerry said...

Four non chasers in the top ten, and I don't believe they've gotten four seconds of coverage.

ChrisK said...

And no mention of Ragan in sixth or Trevor Bayne running eighth. Also not in the chase. Looks like a typical chase broadcast.

Roadgeek Adam said...

This game is more of follow the leader. Hopefully Talladega and Martinsville, the last two races I'm waiting so much for, are impressive.

Anonymous said...

Charlie it was a blue Miller Lite, so the #2 of course.

There's more than one of us "anons" muhahahah

Oh, what happened to side by side? Only soemtimes?. WTH?

ChrisK said...

Why can't the telecast show us every driver in the top 10 and not just those in the chase. I wonder if Nascar thought of this when they came up with that?

Anonymous said...

Sorry missed a few minutes has Tony pitted yet?

Sorry missed a few minutes has Tony pitted yet?

Buschseries61 said...

I walked out of the room for 10 minutes. JJ Yeley?

Charlie said...

I believe Nascar figured people would switch to one of the drivers in the chase as their driver.
Little do they know.

Buschseries61 said...

lol Anon 945's and I had the same idea. Gotta move around to stay awake.

Roadgeek Adam said...

5th, 6th and 7th are 3 of the first time winners. Allmendinger, the one who should join them is 12th, sigh

Daly Planet Editor said...

More I see Nonstop the smaller the live box gets.

jimm57 said...

You re probably right Charlie. They do it in other games, but this is a whole different sport and 43 teams all at once. I'll NEVER cheer for the 48, other than a bronx cheer!!!

Anonymous said...

Please dont let Kyle B this one Nascar needs a something new to happen

Charlie said...

Taking in account the side by side commercial, look how many laps we have seen the 18 in a tight shot.

Becky [@hightechredneck] said...

I don't understand why they can't have the interval behind the leader on the ticker at all times.

Oh wait ... it came back. But still ... it should always be up there in my opinion, except under caution.

Anonymous said...

I think Charlie is right the box side by side gets smaller and smaller

tle said...

I cant believe the whole commercial break was the 18 car in side by side, and when they come back its still the 18 car?

Roland said...

Just saw on the bottom ticker where the who was wrongfully convicted and spent 26 years in jail before being exonerated won his first professional fight, at age 52. I tip my cap.

Anonymous said...

Kyle B Kyle B are you kidding me? Do they get paid by his team?

Sophia said...

WOW ! WTH this pic in a pic as AB sells some smart phone junk. geez. What terrible camera work.

why am I surprise.

Then next week, I used to love Dega and now it's synchonizedswimming in pairs!

Would like some wide shots.

Broken record

lather, rinse ,repeat

Roland said...

the *boxer* who spent 26 years in jail

Buschseries61 said...

It's a shame that Tommy Baldwin's team has a sponsor and runs the distance every week, yet they get the same amount of tv coverage as Robby Gordon.

jerry said...

Is Wallace drunk?

Anonymous said...

Roland, Jeremy Mayfield JOKE!

KoHoSo said...

All that time just spent on Biffle and no comment on how he's rallying with an obviously ill-handling car.

Well, at least AB admitted there's not really any passing.

Back to Maryland vs. Clemson.

ChrisK said...

Why in the world would they go to Rusty for a technical explanation? Is Brewer on a break?

Charlie said...

The pit reporter did some investigating about the hub and she said it was a broken part.

Roadgeek Adam said...

No mention that Jeff Gordon is actually up to 19th, highest he's been all day

Anonymous said...

Mark Martin broke problems? same thing with the whole team?

Anonymous said...

Bayne/Kahne?Hamlin are in the top 10,but aren't getting much attention. Instead,we get #48 talk.

Ben in N.C. said...

Who looked puffy at the press conference?

RWar24 said...

All the pit reporters seem to be really off their game tonight. Not sure why.. But there's a lot of fumbling/stumbling when they've been reporting.

Anonymous said...

It is my belief the tv crew thought Johnson would dominate this race.It turns out that some of the other teams showed up and they dont know what to do.

ChrisK said...

Most of the time when they re-play some radio traffic from a driver I can't hear it because the car noise is so loud. Don't they listen to their own audio once in a while?

Daly Planet Editor said...

This is a great example of a TV network unable to change how they shoot an event.

You have to search back every lap for the best racing, regardless of the driver's name or position.

Just not happening tonight.

Roadgeek Adam said...

It's 10:00, do you know where your cautions are?

Anonymous said...

cautions coming soon DEBRIS

Anonymous said...

I agree JD.

Sophia said...

OMG! My house mate is watching movies in his room & letting me have 52 in tv. Can NOT believe how TINY the race is in the side by side. On normal sized or SD tvs must be a joke.

Geez. Now we have split screen with LOTS of wasted space.

Anonymous said...

Sophia...is that Sobieski kicking in? :)

Anonymous said...

There was a Chase race a few years ago, where all week and the day of the race, the media had all but engraved a driver's name on the trophy. That driver had a terrible day. Yet they kept talking him up and showed all these taped segments. It was utterly ridiculous. They just can't react to what's happening.

Anonymous said...

Is there a chance this could be another fuel mileage race have not been keeping up with pit stops

Anonymous said...

Man,Bestwick really sounds off his game.

Anonymous said...

thought so

Roland said...

Hardcore bummer for Trevor Bayne

Anonymous said...

Trevor was having a great race

deircr3 said...

This is the 3rd best race of the season. Go Kyle.

Sophia said...

Anon

Yes, been busy tweeting some locals i know & have met. Multi tasking..thus I don't get so annoyed at the broadcast...but seriously. the wasted space in modern TV amazes.

Why not just a split screen like they do on talk shows if somebody is on removed? Why all this gauzy, cloudy, blue junk?

It's a Boondoggle this widescreen digital tv stuff.

Anonymous said...

Even though I dont like Kyle Really like his crew chief

Anonymous said...

Kyle better hope he stays away from some drivers. Due pay back from several he shoved out of the way coming through from the back.

ChrisK said...

JD did you see this tweet from Eddie Gossage?

"Visited with ESPN prez George Bodenheimer, VP John Wildhack and had brunch w/ the SportsCenter crew today in Charlotte. They love NASCAR."

Sophia said...

All the races turning into fuel mileage does not endear me to the sport...imagine folks brand new to the sport.

Anonymous said...

Most he shoved have nothing to lose.

jimm57 said...

What happened to the side by side boxes? Full screen commercials?

And is anybodys signal breaking up & stuttering every so often, or is it just my wonderful Time Warner?

Daly Planet Editor said...

Chris, they took a huge group there and had some talent assigned to each pit box of key teams.

Very interesting we never saw any of them on TV tonight.

Roland said...

@Anon at 10:07 Dave Rogers is a great crew chief. He could turn Kevin Conway into a winner. Dave owned the Nationwide series for a couple years. Won with every driver he had.

Anonymous said...

I dont mind fuel mileage if it is competitive race. This is kind of a joke. Hope it gets better

Charlie said...

Charter cable ok here.

Anonymous said...

This is the playoffs. More basic info. If you're a new veiwer, just hang around and learn. I feel stupid listening to that.

Anonymous said...

Kyle on breaks at the start Give me a break!

The Loose Wheel said...

Roland, don't forget Rogers had to earn it after the failures with Jason Leffler after his first shot in Cup. Would love to see Ratcliff get a shot too.

Anonymous said...

Ratcliff deserves it

jerry said...

Why do I follow mulhearn?

Anonymous said...

Stupid question Can drivers of other teams speak with each other during the race?

CRZ said...

Am I right in thinking that ABC is NOT broadcasting with the letterbox flag enabled, as ESPN has been doing? They seem to be keeping all the graphics in the "safe" area tonight (look at that bottom ticker) and it would also explain the usage of triple pit instead of the quad we've been getting on ESPN.

Roland said...

A rising (Ford) tide lifts all ships. JJ Yeley is having an excellent run tonight.

Anonymous said...

Earnhardts pit crew screws him every race.

jimm57 said...

that side by side box is set up for folks who dont have a wide screen TV. Its keeping the pic's within the SD 3x4 frame. sux for us widescreeners. huge waste of real estate

sbaker17 said...

When I look at the 14 car I keep thinking "Mobil Economy Run."
Should be the series sponsor

ChrisK said...

Back at the beginning of the chase, I measured the box on the non-stop screen on my TV and it was 8 3/4 X 5. Tonight it is 7 X 3 3/4 without the title at the top.

Must be because BofA is sponsoring it. :)

Anonymous said...

That's an animated GIF in that small icon, isn't it?

Buschseries61 said...

Whoever wins this championship can credit pit road and luck.

The Loose Wheel said...

Yes drivers can talk to each other as long as they have that driver's frequency programmed in their radio, it is more typical at Daytona and Talladega though. Only teammates will talk to each other most anywhere else

Roland said...

I feel bad for supercross fans tonight. Their going to have their version of the all star race, the Monster Energy Cup, telecast interupted by NASCAR Victory Lane. Oh well, we used to be moved to other networks because of womens tennis and America's Funniest Home Videos.

Charlie said...

You were right JD. The box is smaller Chris K. measured it.

Anonymous said...

Thanks LOOSEWHEEL

Anonymous said...

anon 10:16...not a stupid question....if they have the radio programmed to reach them they can talk (as they do now with the tandem cars at 'dega & Daytona). But mostly, they ask their spotter to talk to the other spotter & relay a message.

jimm57 said...

we interupt the racing for more commercials.

Didnt we just see some about 3 min ago?

RWar24 said...

Nascar non-stop is pointless. If you can't give the fans a bigger box of live action, then just forget it. It's almost insulting.

jerry said...

Never thought I would hear big and rich o a ESPN broadcast /sarcasm

Anonymous said...

There are no dominate cars anymore.Circumstances win the race.Johnson's team learned how to cheat the timing markers on pit road, among other things. There is almost no racing AT ALL for so long, the end of the race, that i'm amazed anybody tunes in.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Roland, no Victory Lane tonight for that reason. Tomorrow at 8PM!

Anonymous said...

The only reason I ask about team to other team contact during the race is that I have been to a couple of Daytona 24 hour races and 1 formula race and they were very protective about their info

Buschseries61 said...

I feel sorry for Allen Bestwick. He has to carry the booth, infield studio, director, and the lack of racing.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Busch, he must want to leap out the freaking window.

The truck is just lame tonight. No clue to actually what is going on.

Becky [@hightechredneck] said...

How can ESPN/ABC get away with talking to crew chiefs during green flag racing? That seems awfully rude to me. Let the guys concentrate and do their jobs. Leave 'em alone.

Anonymous said...

I cannot wait to hear Sirius radio tomorrow morning what a great race blah blah blah by the way first time on this site great job! Daly Planet Editor Really enjoying it

KoHoSo said...

Buschseries61...

I agree completely with your comment about AB. This is such a bad race, not even Gus Johnson could make it exciting.

jimm57 said...

Hating all the commercials

really overboard tonite

Roadgeek Adam said...

I would love a caution in about 15 laps to scrunch up this shrimpy field, have pit stops occur and pretend fuel strategy doesn't exist.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Even if the racing up front is not awesome, TV has a job to go and find the stories. Same issue as last year.

It's like ESPN wants it delivered to them on a silver platter.

Use the cameras and show us the racing.

jerry said...

They've only been talking to crew chiefs for thirty something years.

I think the whole booth has been solid tonight espicallly Petree.

The pit lane guys have been solid.

The rest not so much.

Anonymous said...

Dont Laugh Bring on Danica!

Roland said...

JD, Reason I bring it up is I saw on the Speed ticker during Raceday that an abbreviated version of Victory Lane will air after the ABC coverage goes off. Full version tomorow at 9.

sbaker17 said...

Daly Planet Editor said...

Even if the racing up front is not awesome, TV has a job to go and find the stories. Same issue as last year.

If one is given lemons, one must make lemonade

Roadgeek Adam said...

And for the 2nd time tonight, car issues interrupt pit stops

Anonymous said...

A real question I get very confused about drivers in pit road then a caution comes out? any easy explanation?

ChrisK said...

With the wave around and so few cars on the lead lap, it doesn't matter as much anymore if a yellow interrupts the pit stop sequence.

Sally said...

Wow. Have a lot of fans left the race early, or were they that empty at the start?

Roadgeek Adam said...

Chris, I disagree, considering it's benefited those such as Jeff Gordon to get up a bit further than before.

Buschseries61 said...

I have no idea how that #24 team managed to get up to 8th. My only guess is they actually had some luck and caught the cautions/pit stops at the right time

Anonymous said...

I believe that andy petree could carry the booth without any trouble.

Roland said...

We get nonstop for cautions but not under green. I understand the full screen breaks are for local ads, but still.

Charlie said...

There is racing on the track. If you have cars a lap down they get passed and sometimes that pass is interesting.

Anonymous said...

Does anybody know why Kyle didnt take an interview last night ego?

The Loose Wheel said...

No easy explanation for a caution during green flag stops. Depends where your at when the caution comes out, depends where the leader is at when you exit pit road, depends if the cars that lap you stop or do not, etc. It can get awfully complicated

The Loose Wheel said...

Kyle was probably upset after last night. I am really REALLY not a fan of the tapered spacer and that really showed when Carl broke his momentum in 1-2 last night.

My guess anyways was how upset he was for running 2nd

Anonymous said...

These are the circumstances I spoke of earlier that determine the outcome.

Roland said...

I would hate to be that camera guy on top of the platform above turn 3 between the billboards. I mentioned it last night that not having a catchfence there is unsafe.

There's a lot for Bestwick to update after commercial.

jerry said...

No way Hendick and Gibbs were gonna sign off on that. Now he's "hoping" for 40k.
