In-Progress From Bristol: Sprint Cup Series Race on ESPN

Things are getting serious this time of the year for both the teams and the TV networks. The ESPN coverage is on the verge of shifting over to the ABC Broadcast Network for The Chase and Saturday night in Bristol should be a good test of the TV crew.

Allen Bestwick will host the hour-long NASCAR Countdown show at 7PM from ESPN's Infield Pit Studio. He will be joined by Rusty Wallace and Brad Daugherty. This newly-paved track has resulted in some very different racing and that should be the main topic of conversation.

It will be Dr. Jerry Punch calling the play-by-play action from the announce booth in the race tower with Dale Jarrett and Andy Petree alongside for analysis. Down on pit road will be Dave Burns, Shannon Spake, Jamie Little and Mike Massaro.

This crew is coming off a Nationwide race that was so fast and so furious that no one really got a handle on the action until it was almost over. Incidents were missed in commercial, the championship fight took precedence over the racing action and the lack of frequent caution periods made the commercials seem incredibly intrusive. Basically, it was a tough night for the TV gang.

It should be interesting to see if ESPN stripped-down the broadcast to deal with the sixteen second laps and the two-wide racing under green that will probably dominate the night. Almost all the production elements from the SportsCenter updates to the Tech Center explanations and the replaying of the driver audio simply did not fit into the tight time constraints that this race mandates.

ESPN tried to force pre-recorded "soundbites" with the drivers into the telecast. Also, pre-produced "bumpers" of drivers walking-up and looking into the camera before commercial break were used while the race was under green. The results were disastrous. Lap-after-lap of green flag racing was missed.

Sometimes, the network would return from commercial, do a recap of what was missed and then go right back to another commercial break. As a viewer, it was maddening.

On Wednesday night, SPEED aired the Craftsman Truck Series race from this very track. The action was intense and the racing was outstanding. Viewers saw SPEED take a stripped-down approach that put the focus of the telecast on the track and nowhere else. Pit reporters were heard and not seen, all the teams were covered and the commercials were inserted right after a pass was completed. It worked.

There are a lot of forces at work on the ESPN coverage that makes shrinking the telecast very hard. ESPN has ten announcers, a Tech Center, an Infield Pit Studio, SportsCenter updates, a bottom line constant sports crawl and a lot of promos to do.

Even the short Nationwide Series race was so fast that it ended almost forty-five minutes early. If the Sprint Cup Series decides to run side-by-side and fight it out in the pits for position, it could be one of the shortest races in Bristol history.

I was just thinking about that one. Why would you play Bowyer back if you knew he was wrong and he did not know it?

What did that do except embarrass Waltrip for the moment?

Anonymous said...

ESPN is doing a great job tonight. Everyone is on their game even Doc and Shannon now she's loosened up. I am so happy with the effort they have put in. See guys? It doesn't take that much to please us old fans.

Anonymous said...

After hearing what Bowyer said about NAPA, I know for sure I'm never buying Cheerios again!

What a baby.

But seriously, why would ESPN even consider playing that audio?

bevo said...

I have no problem at all with the Bowyer audio. Gives some color to the race.

Matt said...

I understand that it may have been a little pot-stirring on ESPN's part.. but the drivers and teams are aware that whatever they say can be replayed at anytime.

i agree. when it's pretty clear what happened AND the driver who cause it has owned up (after a fashion), can't undersatnd why we need to make bowyer look like a jerk.

Vicky D said...

Thanks AP for the update on free pass. I had Nascar Live Leaderboard but it kept on locking up so I have Fox we'll see how that goes. I don't think ESPN should have played Bowyer's radio remarks. Bet MW will have a comment on that one on Monday.

Anonymous said...

Thank you for the infield care center updates espn.

For those who thought Denny threw his team under the bus, they sure were quiet about Casey Mears doing the same to his spotter. Hmmmm

Anonymous said...

AP and DJ are stepping up on the pxp pretty good. DJ may be a natural someday.

bevo said...

Hate to be the one to break the news but everyone out there on the track doesn't love everyone else. Time was the drivers didn't hide their opinions for fear of sponsors and fans.

Jessica said...

tony just said f that primadona fer...wonder if espn will play that?

Haus14 said...

yep - tony didn't sound too happy with JG

sure sounded to me as if the spotter erroneously cleared mears.

plus, hamlin's done it repeatedly over the past two years: mears hasn't. and hamlin's comments came after he exited the car after the race, not while still on the track.

those are the aspects that made the difference for me.

WOW! Another Dave Blaney mention. ARe you kidding me?

Is somebody reading this blog??

:)

Last week, I thought Blaney's wreck a mirage...a Phantom driver..and a couple of mentions tonight. Zowee.

I hope Clint B gets a blown motor.

MEOW HISS!!?? PPhhtt

Nice to see better coverage after being in the sewer last night.

Only if it will cause him headaches, but after timmys remarks I hope they don't poke the bear with a sharp stick. It would be ugly

Matt said...

I agree sophia.. I'm loving all of these Blaney shoutouts.

With the 20 and 24.. I don't see what the 24 did wrong? Looks like Tony is just being Tony.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Now all we need is a Schrader update.

Anonymous said...

I don't care what Bowyer says about Michael Waltrip. I'd honestly agree.

But, he brought a sponsor into the mix - and the sponsors pay the bills.

ESPN was shortsighted enough to play the audio - sponsor and all.

ESPN has to be smart enough to realize the sponsors grease the pole of this whole crazy thing.

I've heard much worse from drivers about other drivers - but ESPN was extremely unprofessional to play that clip with a negative sponsor mention - especially given the current state of the sport.

Vicky D said...

I guess after last week's misstep with Blaney after his big wreck, ESPN is making up for it tonight. It's nice to see Dave having a good race.

Anonymous said...

Its Bristol, after they get in & fire up the cars they all hate & curse each other cuz its Bristol.

The first time Denny threw someone under the bus he was pilloried on tv & boards.

Sophia said...

I thought everybody loved everybody on the track. You just told me the NASCAR version of No Santa Claus :-)

or was it No Sanity Claus..whatever. (Sorry. very old Marx Bros movie line !)

Still, it's one thing to say something on your radio for sure...but Clint is getting to be a jerk sometimes...

I'd rather hear the stuff like Stewart's comments but I did not catch what "fer" meant?

P.S. Robin Miller SAYS we need more HATE in auto racing, lol

Anonymous said...

anon 10:00

I totally agree. I'm a MW fan but he is not the best driver. But with the state of sponsorship you can not do stuff like that!

Anonymous said...

I'm noticing the studio, especially Bestwick, has been chiming in a lot more than usual tonight. Wonder if that was the plan coming in.

TexasRaceLady said...

What happened to the lousy ESPeeN I watched last night?

While not the greatest, it is far and away above what I was expecting.

Can't believe they went to the infield care center and did interviews.

Don't know if I can stand all the improvement.

Nan S said...

I honestly believe that people at ESPN are reading this blog. As pointed out, they covered the care center after the wreck and they just mentioned Almirola and McMurray, who, God Help Us, are not "bubble boys" or Chase contenders.

Daly Planet Editor said...

TRL,

I would have loved to be in the ESPN pre-race meeting after that effort last night.

Tonight, no Tim Brewer and pit reporters that were off-camera under green flag racing.

Bestwick and company heard but not seen while racing was going-on and the SC updates inserted under caution for the most part.

Nice rally for the TV guys so far.

Sophia-

One of the problems with racing these days is too much buddy-buddy stuff on the track. Guys like Cale, Buddy and the Allison's say it started with all the drivers staying together in the coach area for the weekend.

Funny that people wax poetic about the 79 Daytona race but get upset about a driver saying another is an idiot

Sophia said...

Just to clarify along with others...Drivers can say whatever they want but INDEED, it was the SPONSOR MENTION that was totally classless....and not necessary.

Nan.
YIKES. thanks for explanation.

I CAN"T BELIEVE IT..Blaney wrecked?Q Talking about the hard hit tonight...sheesh...this totally STINKS.

This just can not be the same director or producer or whoever runs things cuz this is not your average ESPN broadcast!

Almost like someone took off the handcuffs?

TexasRaceLady said...

haus, there is a pedrestrian tunnel at Bristol now --- they put it in last year when they did the rebuild.

Daly Planet Editor said...

karen,

ESPN cranks out hundreds of promos spots every month. They contain two audio channels.

One has the natural sound, which is all the sound effects without the final voice track. This is so changes can be made or portions of the promo used again.

The second channel has the full mix, which is the final audio program mix you hear at home.

Once in a while, the channels get swapped or the nat sound gets striped on both channels. That is supposed to be caught in the QC (Quality Control) by the engineer on duty.

I would hope the ESPN Master Control is pulling the spot and finding the right master copy as we speak.

@sophia--sorry for the late response. I picked up one of my grocery bags wrong earlier and my back is making me pay for it so I've been laying down. This is why I'll be glad when I can get a lap top :). I have a wireless keyboard and mouse but can't read the screen even if it is a 20" monitor from the couch. It's funny that the tv guys haven't really mentioned Newman or Stewart in quite a while. There goes KB by Paul Menard again so if there's another yellow, then the #15 gets the free pass. All Jr's hard work for naught.

They have been putting it on the DVR because NASCAR has no one on scene to coordinate the TV feed.

It just shows up when the drivers are ready. ESPNEWS has a format, and they told me that they try to get it live when they can but if they are in a story or commercial they just put it to the DVR and play it back ASAP.
