Live Blogging The Nationwide Series Race From Daytona on ESPN
This has all the potential to be a very special night for the NASCAR on ESPN team. NASCAR has added the new restart rules to the Nationwide Series and the field is full of cross-over Sprint Cup Series drivers.
Allen Bestwick is going to start the night with NASCAR Countdown at 7:30PM. Brad Daugherty and Dale Jarrett are alongside.
Update: TDP error. Rusty Wallace was not scheduled to be on this telecast.
Dr. Jerry Punch, Dale Jarrett and Andy Petree are going to call the event. Jamie Little, Shannon Spake, Mike Massaro and Dave Burns are on pit road.
If there was ever a night to get things right, this is it. The entire ESPN TV team is on-hand for this huge event. The weather has cleared and the Nationwide Series cars under the lights in Daytona should make great pictures.
Look for the triple-split issues that ESPN has been experiencing on pit road under caution. The race to the line in the pits may play a key role in letting teams get track position with tire and fuel choices.
Daytona has long caution laps, so TV commercials and replays should not be an issue. Bestwick and company have been good at resetting the scene for viewers during the event and the ESPN pit reporters have been getting better at offering information and not hype.
This post will serve to host your comments about the ESPN coverage of the Nationwide Series from Daytona. To add your TV-related comments, just click on the comments button below. This is a family-friendly website, please keep that in mind when posting.

«Oldest ‹Older 201 – 339 of 339Love to hear Brad yelling for McDowell.
Yeah, big thumbs down to the "Spotter's Chatter".
Poor Shetra doesn't get an interview oh yeah, he's not a cup driver.
This broadcast was all over the place....only would a NASCAR broadcast have to promote a hot dog eating broadcast. That full throttle thing does nothing for me.
A Bigger thumbs down to racing in a box - so we can see a CC staring into the distance
Ryan, love to see the 47 win, too. Like the owner and the driver.
Yeah, Jr. It's all about the fun. Probably why you're in 18th place in the Cup standings.
Would LOVE to see the McD win the race.
Lots of promos and charity ads tonight. Not just the on-track sponsorship that is slow.
I think there's a caution.
Debris.
@darbar - if you notice he gives bspn reporters nonanswers. Ever since Jamie stuck her face in his last year trying to get him to answer her.
so, would you guys agree that this has been a little rough and choppy tonight?
Why don't the pit reporters tell the driver what happened? They saw it, the driver rarely knows who got into who.
The 2nd half of this broadcast has been weird. When they went to Dale Jr's interview, I was under the impression that they had gone to green flag racing.
Then they had problems finding Michael Waltrip's car on pit road. Just a very strange broadcast.
they are giving us decent info, but there are way way to many commercials going on tonight
@ JD, you said it.
JD - Maybe ESPN needs Bill Weber in the booth tonight. Very choppy and hard to follow.
That had to be the most obnoxious music in that ad for Watkins Glen.
Hurt my ears.
At least, I'm assuming it was supposed to be music.
Rough? Choppy?? That's putting it mildly. I'd say more like being beaten with a 2x4.
JD
You KNOW what I think...but a few are saying same thing on Twitter. Especially one TS fan.
CHOPPY is being kind. Bipolar, schizophrenic, no clue WHERE the racin' is or let me correct myself, THEY do not CARE to "show us".
SHOW US the RACE. ESPN CLASSIC was great camera work.
today's? Stinks to high heavens.
Yes, JD, ESPN has square wheels on this bus tonight.
@JD you are very nice to state it that nicely!
Actually its a new low for bspn, & its not gonna get better. Words that come to mind, director is recently trained intern doing a research project. Hitting buttons randomly for no known reason. Occasionally gets lucky
DFR - it shouldn't be a big deal for any of these guys its basic short track "lower" tier racing.
JP is starting to repeat statistics.....a sign he's wearing down.
Why does it take SAFETY SO LONG to get there..in IRL there right away.
SCARY!!
CATTLE PROD, CATTLE PROD!!!!!
A civilian got to Kerry before the safety crew did.
How about resetting the field - oops more comm'ls.
TV was about 20 to 30 seconds behind MRN on letting us know that caution was occurring.
This has happened so many times before, it takes the safety crews too long to get there especially when a car is on fire.
You have to wonder what is wrong with Jerry? He is such a nice guy, but his deep sighs and his inability to generate even one iota of excitement during this race is just mind boggling.
That fire sure had my heart beating faster. And when he couldn't get out, oh, my goodness.
And we still don't know how Kerry got involved.
JD,
no doubt..this is really JP's time to shine, as well as the whole ESPN team.....they have laid an egg IMHO
So we are on to breaks from breaks.
Why return from the break just to show that instead of directing your attention has been put to crash clip show of the event to this point.
Does ESPN realize there was another yellow car in the wreck? Jeff Green got slammed into by Kerry Earnhardt but wasn't even shown or mentioned. Every driver has fans.
When the other guys in the booth are ignoring Punch, that's a really bad sign--but they must be, because more than once, they've repeated what he just said.
That whole "Full Throttle" concept has been stupid since the first time they used it. Stop looking for gimmicks and just cover the race!
Good interview with Ralph Sheheen over on NASCAR.com when you guys get a chance after the race. He is a great guy in real life.
That was Kerry's Crew Chief. He ran across the infield, swam across Lake Lloyd and arrived at the car. Then the safety crew showd up.
I can't say for sure but from the tracks I've been to, no 'civilian' should be able to get to a car. Probably a track worker (and I have no idea what training they have). Granted, people have been known to jump over fences...
this coverage stinks...check previous 220+ comments for reasons...ratings are gonna tank in a couple of weeks
Great point. DJ and Andy just talk among themselves once things get going.
@Dot
what do you mean a civilian got to Kerry first? what did you hear?
I missed it
ummm-why am I watching this again?? oh, actually I'm not, since the E bros are both out, but I am listening on MRN, so I know what is going on! Pitiful coverage from BSPN, imo. Gonna be a sad, sad fall....:(
Mike, the ultimate irony is that the TNT guys are using this race to rehearse for the Wide Open coverage tomorrow.
@Jimbacca ---
Maybe I'm just tired, but your sentence just doesn't make any sense.
@R_C Fan ---
I think you're right! ROTFL
J.D.,
Did you see the Topsy Turvy Tomato grower/vegetable slicer per-inquiry ad about a half-hour ago? If it was national it must mean the spots are going begging. In my local market, Comcast seems to have sold about half of its availabilities. They're filling the rest with spots with local merchants saying how well their Comcast ads help their business.
By the way, R.I.P. Billy Mays. Discovery has a tribute show on July 9. He was like a car wreck. I didn't want to look, but I had to. Love him or hate him, he was a real American original.
@Sophia: throughout Northern California, local municipalities cancelled their fireworks displays as they're having a hard time paying police, fire, EMT... Local animal shelter is about to cut its hours.
West Coast Kenny
Alameda, California
ok..just saw answers...
Are you serious? SOMEBODY SWAM across the lake that fast? you kiddin?
Could any of the reporters mention any driver not in the cup race? ( no)
Meanwhile, over on SPEED...the snow is piling up in Chicago and everyone might get killed towing cars....I love that show.
@ R_CF, too funny.
@ Anon 9:58, I just saw a guy w/o any uniform on. No clue who it was. Just a term.
RC..ok...i see your kidding by TRL comments :)
Fireworks started...closed the main sliding door...my little autistic cat is in living room thank goodness.
This race has NOT been enjoyable viewing.
that's the family opinion.
Kenn, there is a pic of Mays' funeral online. It is great! The pallbearers wore his blue shirt and khaki pants.
Remember, get your heart checked on your annual physical.
@JD, maybe I'll go watch that.
Snow might make me at least feel cooler.
We've had 100+ temps for the last forever.
Here in Tampa we are getting Brighthouse is great comm'ls & local merchant 30 sec spots.
dear mr. daly...i'm one of the brokest racing fans out there and i would pay to listen to kyle and the gang rehersing this race instead of what we are getting
Time to warm up the DVR for the ESPN broadcasts of the Cup. Then I can put it on the first fast forward, not have to listen to the bad broadcasters, and fast forward to the end, only stopping on interesting stuff.
Man, that 07 sure was involved in a lot of incidents tonight.
give the Dr. 1/2 for calling it a "Shootout"......total is at 8....
Is JP even in the booth tonight?? I haven't heard a word from him. Only DJ and Andy are talking .
Mike, I feel your pain.
Andy Petree & Dale Jarrett have taken over play by play for the rest of the race. Jerry's job is to call out numbers and read promos.
Andy and DJ are doing the PxP!
Makiki
Honolulu
Tonights "coverage has made the decision for us - we are renewing Pit Command so we can get MRN when the local sports channels don't come in w/ clear signal. We will not endure this garbage coverage of a sport we love.
Like to see a replay of Edwards vs. Vickers and the yellow line.
I have a 42" LCD flat screen and with all the graphics ESPN has up it's reduced it to a 13" ? Talk about going cross eyed.
DJP treated that caution like it was for debris.......must be past his bedtime......
Where's Doc? Oh yes, there he is but it's 7 laps to go.
@R_C - yup they really know how to hog up the screen on HD don't they?
J.D.,
I had a silent heart attack in late September 2004 and quad bypass and a valve repair on Nov. 2. (I didn't have any drastic symptoms except for some shortness of breath.) I should have died. I was the same age as Billy.
WCK
I have no clue what is going on. Punch is done for the night. Silence...silence...and more silence.
Let's not red flag this.
These guys have TOO MANY HOOKUPS!! cant they go wireless.
These fires are scary!!!!!
6 laps to go...big wreck...we hear andy say "crash" then crickets..at least one of the three is actually looking at the track
It seemed to take forever for the fire crew to get there.
Can't go wireless Sophia--wifi is too touchy. They have the "air conditioning" hose, their seat belts, their radios and God knows what else. But why so many fires tonight?
I don't get TSN2, so I can't watch the race. The radio guys are making it sound very very very exciting.
Hopefully this TSN2 issue will be solved for me next month. I love plate racing, and I'm cranky that I can't watch the race. Love the radio guys, though.
--KarenB
Wow, 2 big car fires tonight. That's bad hope everyone is ok.
OMG, what a horrible fire!!! Glad driver seems ok!
Car catches on fire and JP offers nothing, but the monotone about 45 seconds later, "that's Kertus Davis....his dad, Johnny Davis, owns the car".
It's too bad because it sounded like JP was really into it at the beginning of the race....but he's used all of his material up and has no more to offer.
Kenny
Glad you are still here.
EVERYBODY ask your doctor for a stress echo test. If you have crappy insurance, make up a symptom to check out. you walk on treadmill and they do echocardiogram at same time.
A PLAIN treadmill test is USELESS!
Billy Mays commercials were annoying but I saw him speak off camera and he seemed a quiet, nice man. R.I.P. billy
JD I saw your pic of him on Twitter and RT'd it
"Late Race Shootout" by AB......up too 8 1/2
This Just in....
JP last words were: "3 donuts and coffee,Oh and use half-n-half please. Ok, where was I.."
WCK, glad you're still here.
Heart attacks aren't like what they show on TV/movies.
One more time for DFR SOS.
The way I look at it is this: When that car suddenly caught on fire, what were the emotions of everyone here? I can't believe JP is the only one that didn't share those same emotions.
54 degrees here. Time to turn the heat on and get the chill out of the house. Upper Peninsula of Michigan here.
I meant to addd plain treadmill test useless in MANY CASES and women are more complicated and can shoot out unusual wave patterns..hormones and stuff throw boomerangs in. low estrogen can mimic heart problems..tachycardia, fatigue, etc
TRL, Nascar's rescue people are sorely lacking, especially when compared to how they handle things with the IRL. I've been to many CART/Indy Car races over the years, and the one thing that has always impressed me is their quickness in responding to wrecks--they have their own traveling medical teams/trucks for the IRL, something Nascar refuses to do, so they have to rely on locals to handle the emergencies. In a sport that has so many more resources, and a whole lot more money than the IRL, Nascar is way behind the safety curve.
Heck, the Nascar Ladies Auxiliary wanted to donate a traveling medical truck for Nascar's use, and Helton and company refused it. Go figure.
maybe its just me but it seems like every word out of JP sounds like he's reading it off a teleprompter and doesn't know what emotion to project until a half second after its out of his mouth. when he says anything at all..seems all he really knows how to do is ask basic questions instead of providing play by play..so painful to listen to and then a director just playing with all the camera buttons...its like espn and fox are in a contest to see who can kill nascar fastest
Sophia, the nuclear infusion combined with the treadmill --- you glow in the dark. hehehe
Can someone translate what Kerry just said?
Kerry next for drug testing. Inhaling fumes. Glad he's OK.
Whoops! Wrong Kerry Earnhardt replay
OKL, last shot at getting some excitement into the telecast.
JP is on 7 sec. delay.
does Punch even know the rules??
JD - Does Punch even know where he is???
Could they not have done a split screen with the wreck and the leaders.
There's only 1 attempt at GWC...don't they know that?
But JP again couldn't get excited, it was as if his mind was thinking...."There's a caution out....it was only for the win....no big deal.....can I go home now?"
Remember, these guys didn't know the rules on the yellow line at Dega last year. So no surprise that they didn't immediately declare Clint the winner.
You can tell that the radio guys work for the France family. They never refer to the track as "Daytona". It's always "The World Center of Racing". Makes me giggle.
--KarenB
Thanks all for caring. My BP was 121/78 and my cardiologist said I was one of his success stories (I dropped 40 lbs since the surgery). Beef and pork are a monthly treat and no ice cream or cookies in the house. (SIGH!) Sometimes I wonder if it's worth it. Then I go support Marcos Ambrose and buy a box of Little Debbie brownies. (Just one a week.)
Life is reasonably good, although it would be better if TNT had all the races and Jr. won one once in a while. (I thought I'd bring it back to NASCAR TV, J.D.!)
WCK
was that a GWC? I never heard them announce that. Either way, what a pathetic race broadcast on sooo many levels.
So, if you were to give a letter grade to ESPN tonight on one of the biggest Nationwide race telecasts of the year, what would it be?
It was a GWC and there's only 1 attempt at a green flag finish. Yet the caution came out and the reaction from them was, "The caution is out. This might end the race".
D+
I could have called things better from home than Jerry did at the track!
In fact, I did!
i would give them a z- if only cause i can't think of anything lower
Short post race. SC coming up.
the crappiest camera work EVER...just when one was enjoying seeing the pack SWITCH in car cam..then another in car or bumper cam.
hope all the drivers are ok...
now that major fireworks are over and my scaredy boy is asleep on the Master chair (wooden chair with Master's degree logo from my room mates U on it but I digress) surburbanites are shooting off firecrackers.
but it sounded like thunder the finale and that usually sends Oscar under bed/sofa. :)
I really hate to lay onto the JP stuff but he is way too tired.
all the time.
As a former teacher, Dr Jerry would get an F, the other two would get a C and the program director would get a F minus, if that's a possible grade. The overall grade would be a D minus
ESPN grade for tonight = D+
Andy and DJ saved it from becoming a complete failure.
Something tells me someone in NASCAR control heard their call of the finish and someone stepped over during the commercial break to explain things to them about the GWC rules.
A solid D.
C-
The on-board shots and bumper cams lost all perspective. Tight shots showing only 5 cars in a pack of 25. Dr. Punch ran out of gas. At this time of the season, ESPN should be 2 steps ahead from Feb. Instead they are 3 steps behind.
JD
My Grade F! with GREAT CAMERA work I can forgive a lot of other stuff as you have seen by my posts on Mike Wells races
NW is going to COT next year Kyle said? THAT STINKS, too.
F MINUS
Wreck at the end. One car gets crushed into a cube against the wall.
Jerry?
"The driver is out of the car."
Really, Jerry? Who is it?
He doesn't say because he clearly doesn't know who it is.
Pathetic.
They started out good. The first 30 to 40 laps, I would say A-....but it just went downhill after that. So, overall, i'd give it a flat C.
Let me add, to be fair and balanced.....thumbs up to Shrub for being grateful on a 2nd place finish.
See, I told you. Now on to Tennis hilites on SC.
They were just terrible tonight. Spent more time watching Lance Armstrong's greatest hits on VS. Engaged announcers and real competition, LOL...
And Charlie from the UP--have a pasty for me! I miss Houghton!
Ok...reading others I must be more reasonable.
F PLUS
Had this been a SHORT TRACK. i woulda given it a D.
but to SCREW UP DAYTONA????????
I think one big thing to remember is ESPN is weeks away from taking over both series for the rest of the season.
Someone at ESPN has to have the discussion about moving Jerry out of the booth.
This was brutal.
Have a great night, see you all tomorrow for Cup action!!
JD
Over 10 drivers were in accidents the last 10 laps, uninterviewed. But lets go to SportsCenter that will be replayed 12 times tonight & tomorrow! The last 17 races of Sprint Cup look very bleak
Grade for racing coverage...D. JP just HAS to go!! Sorry..
Ditto, Mike C. KyB did a much better interview than usual. Maybe he heard what Rusty said about him last week.
JD, I just went to my Twitter site and read your comment about trying to find a pulse for ESPN's race coverage. I nearly shot diet Coke out of my nose. Too Funny
I'm so dreading ESPN's turn in the Cup series. I mean really dreading it.
Let us not FORGET the CAMERA DIRECTOR needs to take lessons from Mike wells.
WIDE SHOTS for most of the race should be a RULE.
look at the old ESPN CLASSIC races. Fab!! no graphics clutter or excess in car cams. GREAT FLUIDITY to the racin.
to go from WIDE SHOTS sound/look to in car shot/diff engine, to bumper cam, to wide shot, to in car cam....
??
ESPN's poor coverage is part of a NASCAR plot to drive fans back to the racetrack.
Either that, or ESPN's just bad.
Hehe...if only that conspiracy theory was working.
F is the best I can do. This was awful. Imagine them doing this to MLB, NFL, Tennis, MLS, or tour de lance. No it was a solid F.
@Anon 1043 - LOL! You are giving NASCAR far too much credit for the ability to have coherent thoughts, form them into a plan & then put it in action. ( see the cot & drug testing plan)
Think about what genius we are dealing with here. Wile E. Coyote is a Rhodes scholar compared to the NASCAR bunch!
@ Jo, you're killing me.
jo
nice to see somebody else thinks this was a true F broadcast (oh the jokes one could make with that statement!!)
I'll have to give a D --- and that's being generous.
I'm absolutely dreading the date ESPN takes over.
These guys have TOO MANY HOOKUPS!! cant they go wireless.
No. RF signals are far too unreliable for that.
And anyway don't you think that if it were workable, they'd have done it already?
@Sophia - (Jo smiles sweetly) "F" is for France -right?
@Dot Thanks - You did well tonight yourself!
@ Jo, Thanks. I'm tellin ya. If not for you guys and TDP what would we do?
Our only hope is that JP loses his mind at some hotel......
I have lost my mind.....I give this telecast an "F"....the Doctor was out, the cameras were on the bumpers too much, and the "choreography" was terrible between the booth and truck....You would really think that the 4 letter would put their best foot forward for this race, but they totally tripped on themselves, and the sad thing is, they don't care......Count me as a fan that tunes in to football during the fall because of the 4 letter's inept ability to call a race......It is truly sad what has become of the TV aspect of this sport.......It could be so great, but instead it is just not worth watching, or at least listening to.......
Good Night and hope for better from Wide Open tomorrow
Did anyone notice the phrase wordsmith Ken Squire used when he talked to Brian France last night? He asked him if Bill France Sr and Jr would be "shocked" if they saw what changes he made to NASCAR. Not pleased, not happy with but shocked the changes. I thought that was a curious choice of verbage.
Frank in Sebring
Jojaye
Why yes, France WAS the word!!
Of course i am with the rest of you DREADING FULL TIME BSPN nonsense with the race coverage.
If NASCAR does not step in to have a meeting to make things better on the tube, ratings will plummet into no mans land. IMAGINE what this will do by 2012 when the contract ends.
@ Frank, now that you mention it. They would be shocked. If one could harness the energy of them spinning in their graves, it could power the entire US.
