Live Blogging The Sprint Cup Series On TNT From Chicagoland

The final chapter in the six race story of NASCAR on TNT is about to play out. As you can see from the picture above, what TNT has brought to the past five races has simply been fun.

Marc Fein leads Kyle Petty and Larry McReynolds on the air at 6:30PM with the NASCAR on TNT Live show. Guests on the TNT infield stage will include Jeff Gordon and Carl Edwards. The outstanding Pride of NASCAR feature continues with a profile of Fred Lorenzen. TNT's commitment to spending the time and effort on producing these features has been welcome in the current NASCAR TV environment.

At long last, Ralph Sheheen will present his sneak peek inside the amazing car collection of veteran NASCAR owner Jack Roush. Many fans still do not know the extensive racing history of this man that includes NHRA and sports car racing championships.

The Countdown to Green show is up next, where Fein speaks with the TNT race analysts Wally Dallenbach and Petty. In this program, Marty Snider gets a tour of downtown Chicago from Kurt Busch, who knows the city very well. Also, the final edition of Wally's World airs featuring a review of this wide and fast racetrack.

Once 8PM rolls around, it will be Sheheen teaming up with Petty and Dallenbach to call the race. McReynolds stays in the infield to offer strategy advice. On pit road will be Lindsay Czarniak, Matt Yocum, Adam Alexander and Snider. This group has worked quite well together, including the versatile Czarniak who only appears on the NASCAR circuit for the six TNT events.

Green flag is at 8:15PM and look for NBC's Jimmy Fallon to be a part of the opening festivities. He has been touring the garages and talking on Twitter about the excitement of being at his first NASCAR race.

TNT has been welcomed by fans because of the relaxed style of coverage that has several features. Director Mike Wells keeps the cameras wide and always lets viewers keep a perspective of where a car is on the track. The caution flag pitstops are always followed with a clear view of the cars racing off pit road and a pop-up graphic that lets viewers know who came out where in the order.

Sheheen lets Petty and Dallenbach have the spotlight while the pit reporters offer information without hype or exaggeration. It is a combination of announcers that simply works on the air. This season will be remembered for Sheheen's willingness to step-in and take the play-by-play role when TNT and Bill Weber parted ways during the telecast schedule.

This post will serve to host your comments about the final Sprint Cup Series race on TNT for 2009. To add your TV-related opinion, just click on the comments button below. This is a family-friendly website, please keep that in mind when posting.

Thank you for taking time from your weekend to stop by The Daly Planet.

Bevo, yep, you're right on that one. That's what we call a "DUH".

Anonymous said...

TNT, aka The Kyle Bush Network.

You'd think that no one else was racing tonight.

Dot said...

Good cars getting ready to be lapped. I'm calling a caution anytime now.

The Loose Wheel said...

Due for a Scott Speed "duh" moment...

Bobby said...

Producer Barry Landis will definitely take the notes from these six races to Mike Joy for next season. Barry, Matt, and Larry will probably discuss that over dinner during the off-season. We also saw the "baptism by fire" of Ralph Sheheen and the world of motorsport is greater for such a lead.

The more "hardcore" race fan can be treated during the 12-race cable stretch versus the 24 Sprint Cup races on network television (13 Fox, 11 ESPN Broadcast).

Bill said...

Last year I looked forward to ESPN taking over. This year I'm dreading it.

darbar said...

Yeah, I see Jr is in 10th, but my comment was about the first pit stop for Jr. Last week, Jr came in to the pits in 12 and they got him out in 30th. That's pretty crappy.

Charlie said...

Another thing to remember with espn doing Nationwide in the fall is the College football. The Nationwide races sometimes get in the way.

TexasRaceLady said...

Is it my imagination, or are the commercials a bit quieter?

If TNT did something to quell the blast, my ears thank you.

darbar said...

Opps, white bread just got lapped.

Does anyone else think that Nascar's ban on testing has screwed with teams like Childres and the one car teams? I sure do. And I don't think this ban saved anyone much money.

red said...

there's that nice chicago sunset!

The Loose Wheel said...

Please make it back to Harvick. I think the 29 is a good story tonight.

Sophia said...

What happened to Kyle Petty.

quiet??

Newracefan said...

Dar it appears Larry Mac agrees with you about Jr pit crew. Guess he had gotten some spots back by the time I looked

Daly Planet Editor said...

TRL, they fixed it.

darbar said...

Sophia, maybe a potty break?

Dot said...

Well, so much for my theory. It's another 11 cars on the lead lap.

Anonymous said...

Is anyone side by side? Besides marketing value of the area (all NASCAR thinks about) Why are we racing here?

Thanks for TNT for 6 enjoyable race broadcasts & lapping all their competition with Race Buddy and Wide Open Coverage.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Junior is one good pit stop from the top five. Jr. vs. Tony would be interesting for TV.

darbar said...

We need a caution to bunch these guys up. When the 5 is close to lapping the 10th place car, that's not good.

TexasRaceLady said...

JD, tell them thank you for me.

I was literally cringing and hitting the mute.

Anonymous said...

@kbaskins - The pizza recipe was awesome - very big hit here!

We got company so I won't post much, but had to let you all know - make that pizza & enjoy this race!

The Loose Wheel said...

dar, neither has going to this new car as Hermie claimed during RD. The car itself has gotten cheaper to produce, the real costs of the new car are the fact that you have to re-certify it if you receive any damage and have to repair the car which costs money to do and takes time.

Thats at least what a Yates employee was telling me last year.

I would like to see testing opened back up. Cap teams at 5 tests but let them choose where to go. And make it 5 tests for a NASCAR sanctioned track in either Cup, NW, CWTS, or CWE/W like the ban applies now except relax the restriction to testing 5 times at any tracks from the above list.

Maybe put Daytona pre-season testing back too. That messed with guys to start the year i thought.

Anonymous said...

Well lets hope Barry Landis does take his notes to Mike Joy, and that Mike has influence w/Fox. TNT just proves JD's point regarding Fox's Hollywood Hotel, and how it is irrelevant and a distraction.

darbar said...

OK, how does Tony not crack up during that Armour All commercial. If it were me, I'd be in hysterics, especially if some cute guy were kissing me all over. On second thought, I'd volunteer for a cute guy to do that.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Even Jeremy Mayfield could not make this one more exciting.

bevo said...

Speaking of sunsets, did anyone see how breathless New Yorkers were a week ago when *GASP* the sky turned orange when the sun started setting? Funny stuff but also really sad

The Loose Wheel said...

dang you dot!

bogus caution #2

Daly Planet Editor said...
Junior is one good pit stop from the top five. Jr. vs. Tony would be interesting for TV.

THAT would be great tv -- but not so great for my stress level at the end of a race. but i'd be more than willing to deal with that post-race if we can get the 14 and 88 going at it during the last laps!

darbar said...

Yeah !!!!! A caution !!! Thank you very much

The Loose Wheel said...

Boo on the yellow!

The Loose Wheel said...

#14 crew getting it done again tonight. Another huge gainer under caution

SallyB said...

Hey! Jr. actually gained a spot on pit road!

Charlie said...

no shot of the debris, or is this a Nascar debris to try and make the race more interesting for the fans.

Vicky D said...

yeah, needed that caution to close up the field. Thanks Nascar!

Dot said...

Still too late for MA. He was way loose. Hopefully he can make it up.

Daly Planet Editor said...

spring rubber on the backstretch...wow...real debris.

bevo said...

Fox isn't changing anything as long as Sir David "Tough" Hill is leading the troops

red said...

Daly Planet Editor said...
spring rubber on the backstretch...wow...real debris.

hmmmm. second spring rubber debris tonight. curious.

Daly Planet Editor said...

This is going to be a good restart.

The Loose Wheel said...

Charlie thats exactly what both cautions have been for so far. They said a spring rubber on the first but that was on the front straight and there were conflicting reports of turn 1 and turn 3 asto where it was. the rubber was on the frontstretch.

Can't say im a fan of manufactured "racing" and passing.

Sad that we have to resort to phantom cautions and double file restarts to get people excited. Ive actually really enjoyed the green flag runs tonight because its been fun watching Tony get through the field, Ive kept tabs on Harvick who has made a mini charge into the mid teens, Carl is making a march too.

And im saying this as a Shrub fan...so conventional wisdom would have me screaming for cautions...

Dot said...

Let's shoot Larry, SOS.

SallyB said...

Guess Larry Mac didn't get the memo about ditching the 'shootout style'.

darbar said...

Someone please 'splain the wave around car and why they can't pit? I don't get it.

Daly Planet Editor said...

bevo,

Check your watch on that one...you heard it here.

TexasRaceLady said...

@dar, the way I understand it, not getting to pit is the penalty you pay for getting your lap back via the wave-around.

Vicky D said...

If Jerry Punch were doing the race, he would tell us the sun is setting in the west - no kidding, Jerry. Pretty sunset I'm waiting for them to show us the moon.

Daly Planet Editor said...

and Junior gets two spots....

The Loose Wheel said...

In an effort to avoid those dreaded lapped cars staying out and having the leaders start behind them, NASCAR now allows cars that stay out to pass the pace car and get a free lap back, however it is under the stipulation that they can not pit under caution as that would give them an advantage. Seeing as they weren't the lucky dog car and would get lucky dog treatment. They can put as soon as the green flag comes out but do not on a track this small as it would be a waste to stay out and get a lap back under caution just to lose it as soon as the green flag comes out.

So they will hope for a quick caution so that they can pit under caution yet still get their lap back.

Wow JG and Carl.

Guess that answers who was mad at who with Denny and Carl.

darbar said...

Did you not love the excitement in their voices on the 24 and 99? Now that's what I like to hear.

Sophia said...

There they go..whoas! LOL

you can tell these guys do NOT take the excitement..been a tough race to cover so they have just shut up and let us see the pictures. :)

Sophia said...

typo

meant they do not FAKE the excitement.

Dot said...

@ JD 9:42, what do you know?

darbar said...

Thanks for the info on wave by cars.

Daly Planet Editor said...

that spring rubber came from Kyle Busch's car. He cannot buy a break tonight.

TexasRaceLady said...

I LOVE the excitement in the booth.

The "whoa" makes sure I'm paying attention.

bevo said...

@JD- Do I have to make a human sacrifice for that to happen? I'll do it if that's what it takes! :)

red said...

skinner, bliss, nemechek down mucho laps. has the booth mentioned it and i missed it?

The Loose Wheel said...

i think that was a break for him actually JD. probably would have lost another lap soon without the caution

Daly Planet Editor said...

Sgt. Schultz: I know nothing!

Daly Planet Editor said...

Couple of cautions and not under the lights. Business will pick up.

The Loose Wheel said...

No red. havent heard a word. they are all out though.

Daly Planet Editor said...

oops...now under the lights.

Did I mention I hate my laptop?

The Loose Wheel said...

Man, no love for Menard or Harvick tonight. 11th and 14th right now.

Especially since Jayski reported Menard might get the booth this seems like a convenient time to have a good run.

red said...

Daly Planet Editor said...
Sgt. Schultz: I know nothing!

jd, in my experience? your "don't know" has proven more accuarte than most of the nascar-related speculation we're subjected to on a weekly basis!

TexasRaceLady said...

@David, from your mouth to Larry's ears!

The Loose Wheel said...

Thank you Larry.

Any reason why through the field cuts off at 10 now? I hate to throw this out there but it almost feels like a script tonight. They have found their 7-9 guys and just stuck with them all night long.

Kahne and AJ are impressing me tonight given the Dodge/RPM situation right now

Sophia said...

Gorgeous sunsets on Race Buddy again..how do I make a scene saved as picture? anybody know

The Loose Wheel said...

shift + print screen is a screen capture, if you have a paint program you can crop from there

The Loose Wheel said...

getting ready for a battle for 3rd. Tony steadily running down Kahne

Daly Planet Editor said...

They are looking for a theme right now and can't find it.

Sophia said...

too late I missed it..lights gone

Dot said...

Weird that Reed got screwed, yet others will stay out forever. Hmmm.

Can't believe how bad the Kenseth and Biff are running.

Better coverage, still bad racing.

bevo said...

I seem to recall that in this kind of situation (most of the top ten the same) last year TNT would start their rundown with the next group of 10 or 15. Am I remembering correctly?

Sophia said...

David, thanks anyway :)

The Loose Wheel said...

"The Hendrick Winds blow through Chicago, Roush continues to struggle."

My theme.

Biff and Kenseth are horrid. Ragan and Jamie mediocre, Carl below his standards. 5, 48, 14, 39 and 88 looking good.

Daly Planet Editor said...

Really appreciate that Ralph continues to keep it light and smooth in the booth.

Dot said...

GF pit stops up next. Tech car too?

The Loose Wheel said...

JD, the other option is Chase contenders or pretenders. Biffle and Burton are doing terrible. Bowyer and Mark having good nights. Reutimann and Montoya are staying on the lead lap but not setting the world on fire.

The story about 12th is compelling, but probably wont be really discussed until 70 or so to go.

Sophia said...

Jeff_Glucks tweets have been hilarious about sharing scanner chatter...lots of frustrated drivers tonight. Jeff is thankful for Twitter..me too.

He has been entertaining to no end.

Yes, this coverage is ok but this track is the pits...no pun intended!

The Loose Wheel said...

great battle for 3rd

Sophia said...

Kyle Petty

Why aren't you TWEETING the last night?

PUHLENTY of time..unless the guys are playing Hangman in the booth.

;-o

Daly Planet Editor said...

Nice job on pit stops. Sounds like these guys have been together for years. Not just six races.

Charlie said...

ok Nascar to make this all interesting throw the yellow now.

darbar said...

Dot, being from Wisconsin, Kenseth is my guy. These tracks are supposed to be his forte, but for some reason, they've not been doing good. I'm seeing Matt dropping out of the Chase unless they get their act together.

Daly Planet Editor said...

I am very surprised Montoya is not up front tonight.

darbar said...

Shrub can't do anything tonight. Now dropping a cylinder?

The Loose Wheel said...

Wow. Kyle is ultra frustrated. Well if they blow it up thats a legit caution. Haha love Kyle being straight up about putting you in Shrub's shoes.

Dot said...

@ dar, that's my point. These are the kind of tracks he should run well at.

What a big baby Weed is. Purposely ruin the engine since he can't win or run well.

SallyB said...

You know Kyle...if he can't win, he doesn't want to be on the track. Blow up the motor and he's out of our misery!

bevo said...

Great job getting the engine sound coming out of the pits on Kyle!

Vicky D said...

Sarcasm on - We feel really sorry for those drivers having a tough time tonight! Sarcasm off

Jack from PA said...

That's a little disrespectful to his team, don't you think?

Just gives us another reason to not like him...

Sophia said...

Hey Dot, check your Twitter DM's.

Tried to clarify. No easy feat in 140 characters.

See if you see what I am saying.

darbar said...

Jack, that's the Shrub. He doesn't care about anyone but himself. To hell with his team. He's thrown them under the bus enough times.

bevo said...

Man I wish TNT was with us for the rest of the season. That analysis of Kyle's engine was fanatastic

Sophia said...

Kyle lost a cylinder before and run a race hasn't he? He is always making excuses during the race...I think he is making up stuff as usual.

or maybe he lost a gear before...I am sure somebody will correct me here..you savvy tech heads :)

The Loose Wheel said...

Jack, I don't think so because I dont think Kyle did anything that any other driver having that kind of night has done before.

KP spoke from an honest driver's perspective. But as the saying goes, they usually grenade when you got a great car, not when its horrible so with his luck Kyle will make it to the end.

red said...

"you're supposed to do more than just shrug your shoulders, you know!"
too funny.

Sophia said...

Shrugged his shoulders in answer...Wally busted by Ralph, lol

The Loose Wheel said...

LOL KP and Wally!

Anonymous said...

I don't believe the explanation Kyle P is giving about KyBu blowing up the engine BEFORE he hit pit road. Someone's trying to cover for KuBu.

The Loose Wheel said...

Shoot. Whisps of smoke out of the 29

Daly Planet Editor said...

Just got told Larry Mac does not stay on the infield stage but goes into the TNT truck. Hmmm...

Jack from PA said...

I don't know. It just seems like a d*** move to all the employees who put their hearts and souls into preparing a car that someone is just going to try and blow up just so he can get out and pout til Indy.

But KP said it himself, so I'll take his word for it.

Priceless with Ralph/Wally!

darbar said...

Shrub complained all this week about Toyota falling behind all the other teams. He wants answers from Toyota why their engines aren't performing.

The Loose Wheel said...

I buy KP's version. I dont think they would be too thrilled if Kyle was just trying to kill it for no reason, if it was down a cylinder its already a lost engine and the night is bad enough. Caution.

Jack from PA said...

If that's true about the 29 that goes along with his luck all year. Never seen anyone with as much bad luck as Harvick's had this year since Dale Jarrett in 2004.

SallyB said...

Poor Shrub. The teams lets him down, the pit crew lets him down, Toyota lets him down...good thing he' never done anything stupid himself to keep falling in the points, isn't it?

Charlie said...

So Dot, JD when is the next caution?

Jack from PA said...

Another fuel mileage race??? If so, at least it'll create some drama in an otherwise snoozer of a race.

Dot said...

I think Marcos is the LD. I was just going to say we needed one.

Charlie said...

guess I was late on that post

The Loose Wheel said...

Jack from their radio it sounds like the QP got knocked in some. Explains why they lost so much ground there.

Well, manufactured excitement here....no fuel mileage race, green light to start taking people out has been activated...

Vicky D said...

Maybe Carl threw some duck feathers out of his car to cause the caution for debris . . . . .

TexasRaceLady said...

Jacques Debris has made another appearance.

Dot said...

Man. Wrong MWR driver. Dang it.

darbar said...

Kenny Wallace's latest Tweet: "Hold on Now!!...I Thought Kyle Busch was the Greatest driver of All time..You Mean His Car Has to Handle...He Just Can't make it GO..????"

Now that's funny.

Unknown said...

this is not a race, it is a farce. three debris cautions???

Jack from PA said...

I think with the double file restarts this won't go green til the end. I'm sensing a yellow-filled finish, but that's just me. Seems this happens a lot in races that have really no racing or yellows til the end.

Dot said...

Laps were slow on RB. That's where I was when the mystery caution came out.

Jack from PA said...

KP said an ice pack was the caution via Twitter?

The Loose Wheel said...

like i said jack, the light to start taking people out has been turned on lol

The Loose Wheel said...

WOW! 14 came back in, missing lugs

Sophia said...

Sally

Yes, poor shrub is ALWAYS so Mr. POSITIVITY and upbeat. ALWAYS shows Gratitude. Shame he's having bad night.

insert sarcasm :)

Daly Planet Editor said...

That was funny last night when the caution came out and someone said it was because Tim Brewer threw his water bottle out of the ESPN cutaway car.

Dot said...

Per KP, ice pack thrown on track. Guessing from stands (my thought).

darbar said...

Wow, bad pit stop for Tony. First one in a very long time.

Jack from PA said...

David, I hear you there.

I don't like to say this because he is having such a great run and I want to see underdogs run well, but Paul Menard's 7th. Just a thought.

The Loose Wheel said...

jack, i called it the first time. those whisps...motor. harvick is FUMING! said 3 weeks in a row motor has gone soft

Dot said...

And Sam got the call.

Vicky D said...

So much smoke!

Ken said...

I have never watched a more boring or phony race in my life!

The Loose Wheel said...

not good for my fantasy team. good thing i got the 48, 9 and 83 too

bevo said...

Hornish's net isn't down yet lets not yuck it up

SallyB said...

I thought they were going to change that opening in inside walls at tracks after JG hit so badly.

Sophia said...

Dang 77 full of smoke?

Looks like he's fogging for mosquitoes!

Kenny Wallace another one funny on Twitter tonight!

darbar said...

Can anyone see Harvick in a Stewart Haas car next season? I think he's getting tired of RCR.

Jack from PA said...

Let me say this... with the wide camera angle down the backstretch we were able to see that accident as it happened. With ESPN we would've seen Sam hit the inside wall, about 5 seconds after it started. Just another thing I'm going to miss from TNT.

red said...

ok, big exhale for hornish finally getting out of that car.

The Loose Wheel said...

dar thats been the talk. though there was talk of kurt being out of the 2 and maybe harvick going there. now they are talking brad k in the 12 so its gonna be a silly next couple months. vickers still isnt resigned either.

Wow, whats the deal on the 77?

bevo said...

@darbar- bet you dollars to donuts that Harvick is the 3rd car at SHR next year

darbar said...

But Ken, the guys on Trackside will call you out on that. When you listen to them, they're always dissing those who've been saying that the races are boring. They're drinking the Kool Aid provided by Nascar. What these guys don't seem to get is that we want to see great racing up front for the entire race, not just the last 10 laps.

red said...

20 car just lost a tire out of the pits during their pitstop: front changer had to get it before finishing the right front and moving around the car.

RB is wonderful!

Jack from PA said...

David, I'm assuming you're a Harvick fan. I'm just wondering what his status is with RCR? I thought 2010 is the last year of his contract. If I were him, I'd be looking elsewhere because even a CC change hasn't fixed anything. Of course, you can't just change bad luck, but still.

Sophia said...

INDEED I thought all those inside walls were supposed to be fixed. What if that had been a faster more vicious hit than what we saw?

NASCAR what's it take to PREVENT bad situations? Some are obvious..and safers need to be everywhere around the track. It was so dark at the one camera angle I could hardly see ...until they showed from other direction.

Vicky D said...

On RB it looks like something was going on with the #1 car can't quite tell what the problem is.

red said...

hey tnt? please make certain someone talks to ambrose when he's out of infield care. thanks.

darbar said...

Didn't hear the talk of Kurt leaving Penske. Personally, I think Stremme should be out. I think Brad K is hacked off about not getting a permanent job in Cup via Hendrick. Don't know if Jr has the money or sponsorship to put Brad in a Cup car.

Charlie said...

I predict that there will be a caution with 10 laps to go.

Jessica said...

Junior's PR guy tweets "Debris is having a rough night. Just brought out its third caution." now that's funny....

Sophia said...

Rats!!

The Loose Wheel said...

Dar, how do you "make" people race hard 50 laps into a 267 lap race? you cant "make" them race hard. Kyle does, and people put him in the dryer for it yet your asking for it out of everyone else?

Just saying.

As for Harvick, I follow everyone's status and Ive been keeping up because Ive seen how bad they are this year and RB has had harvick's radio quite a few times. From the way it sounds this is the final year of his contract with RCR, the sponsor might be going to the #5 next year anyways so it would be a good out for Kevin plus the non-perfromance as a whole of the team is a factor leaning to him leaving.

Menard jinxed. theres our scotty wrecking. Poor Burton.

Told you man, the light is ON!

red said...

thank you, tnt! it is always important to us to make certain that a driver is ok after a wreck.

guess you'll be catching up with this bunch next?!?

Dot said...

@ red, MA in the care center? What'd I miss?

The Loose Wheel said...

Dar it was reported on SIRIUS that Kahne and Kurt's agents might be trying to get them out of their contracts early. As for Brad, Penske is reporting to offer the ride. I think if sponsorship could be found he would go to a 3rd or 4th car at SHR.

Also, Penske is a Michigan guy, Brad is too. The marriage would work.

SallyB said...

Gotta love those splitters being so aptly named...they can flatteen a tire faster than debris!

The Loose Wheel said...

Dot, Marcos is still out on the track, i think red had a brainfart

SallyB said...

That should be 'flatten'. Guess the fingers are getting bored.

bevo said...

More great replays from TNT, folks in the truck doing good

Vicky D said...

I think Red meant Hornish and lucky they did talk to him and he's ok.

Jack from PA said...

@ David,

I heard of the Shell Pennzoil sponsorship going to the 5, just didn't know about Harvick's status. In his in-car from dodging the 98 the engine sounded pretty good. For his sake I'll keep my fingers crossed for these last few laps, he's had a rough year.

That's a shame for Burton in the points. Had nothing to do with that deal.

darbar said...

David, no one wants hard racing all the time, but this strung out straight line racing and half the cars one lap down before half the race is run is boring.

TexasRaceLady said...

Great camera work catching all the action.

The Loose Wheel said...

Splitter didnt cut the 98's tire down. The sideskirt did.

Dot said...

Thanks guys. I thought MA was still out there. Then I thought he was in that mess. Whew.

@ red, way to scare a woman. lol

Vicky D said...

Burton not a fan of the DFR SOS !

red said...

sorry for that ambrose/hornish mess: david is spot on when he calls it a brain fart! i was looking at lap times on the leaderboard and just didn't switch my brain as fast as my laptop!
i am SOOO sorry, dot!

Sophia said...

Are DFR REALLY the cause of the wrecks? Other drivers complaining of this??

Karen said...

Hornish should have put his window net down. Scared me he was going to suffocate in all that smoke.

MikeC said...

Loved Burton's reaction after he swallowed that sip of Coke Zero. LOL

SallyB said...

It looked like the 98 got loose just before the contact with the 88. Wonder if the tire was already going flat?

darbar said...

Burton is such a nice guy and good racer, but he's had crap for luck all season. Sounds like he doesn't like double file restarts. Some guys seem to really like and some don't.

Jack from PA said...

Man if there's ever a "Mayor of NASCAR" position available, Jeff Burton would get my vote.

Ken said...

We get racing like this and they wonder why attendance and TV ratings are down?

The Loose Wheel said...

Jack, it may sound okay, but the valve spring may be soft. watch from the rear bumper in the center of the turn, you can see the car burning oil. he said the motor is soft and you can see him getting pulled all the way down the straights now.

Dar, its the product of putting such a "dirty" aero car on the track. I wish we would dump the splitter and wing entirely because the wing gives the car TOO much stability, so you cant solo spin unless a tire goes down or your INSANE loose, and the splitter just adds to the front downforce which means aero push behind anyone. thats why its so single file and strung out all race. There is great racing through the field I just dont know why the camera cant bother to spend 20 laps outside of the top 10 to show it all. they maybe go back there for a lap or two at a time but thats the difference from the old ESPN package to the packages we get now. Back then they would find racing and stay with it regardless the position, now they seem to be committed to showing the top 10 if they can even manufacture the slightest reason to do so.

Dot said...

It's cool red. I still love you, :)

red said...

thanks, dot! i was feeling sheepishly guilty, scaring you like that!

The Loose Wheel said...

29 reporting flat rf

The Loose Wheel said...

ok jack, im guessing they may have had a loose plug wire on the 29 as he looks up to speed now and there is no smoke. no tire issue, 29 leaking power steering fluid though

darbar said...

David I totally agree with you. That splitter has to go or at least give the teams the ability to "mess" with both the splitter and wing. But Nascar is so darned touchy with "don't mess with the COT" that no one is able to do anything for better handling.

bevo said...

Amazing Burton's status as elder statesman now. I was listening on the scanner at his first win at Texas years ago and he spent half the time talking about the women in the infield showing their appreciation for the drivers during the race :)

MikeC said...

TNT is doing what ESPN should've been doing last night. Yes, Chicagoland can get strung out, but if you keep going back, you'll eventually find a battle for position.

If Kahne gets out of his contract a year early, where would he go? Maybe he'll go to SHR because Tony is one of his best friends.

Remember the whole idea of the COT (safety too) was to take the races out of the hands of the aero guys and make the drivers actually drive

WHOO HOO!!! MA the LD.

Word in the garage is Childress won't return Harvick's phone calls and the 29 sponsor won't be returning to RCR next year. Entire RCR team not performing well this season supposedly due to Childress focusing his attention on his grandson's racing, winery, hunting, etc. while the cup team gets what's left.

The writing is on the wall for Harvick and Mears isn't safe either.

TNT sure is cursed with five out of six most boring races of the year. Still their announcers make lemonade out of lemons.

bevo, needless to say the guys at nascar were wrong. they figured if they made the car dirty enough aero wouldnt matter. fact is that it matters even more now.

Dot said...

@ bevo, I remember that too. Looked good on paper I guess.

Dot, one guess about Jr. The guy cannot drive the COT. He just can't find a comfortable way to adjust the handling. Plus, everything for Jr has to be "fun". Even his cousin, Tony Eury Jr said the exact thing in a USA Today article yesterday. He said "they need to find a way to make the car fun".

The Loose Wheel said...

NorCal. Im not surprised. RC said it before though, when Dale passed he wanted to just quit right there. I think that sentiment lingers still.

There is a whole new crop of drivers on the horizon. And they are as young as possible. Many with very familiar last names.

RB showing hood up on the 29 on pitroad . . .

The races over the summer months have historically been some of the most boring ones (Pocono, Michigan, Chicago, Indy)

The COT proves the old adage...and elephant is a mouse designed by committee.

Everything I know of Jr he CANT get comfortable driving a loose car. With this car you have to get it really loose to get it to handle in traffic, Jr isnt comfy with that concept so it gets tight and they wind up running that top "go no where" lane on many of these tracks or they lose track position and can't figure out why they dont go forward at times.

The car has to be insane free to handle in traffic. I bet if they got Jr to the point with his car as is he would be shocked how much better it is.
